It may be looked down upon as a gaijin's first Gundam show but seriously, it's not that bad. A perfectly enjoyable 90s anime. I'd even say it may be among the best of non-Tomino Gundam shows.
Better than Seed and X for sure.
>>22930604It has a lot of great moments. Cool suits, neat setting, fun characters. It's only crime is being retarded as hell but in the goofy way. Compared to how retarded as hell ends up looking most of these days I'd say Wing got off really lucky.
Honestly am loving Wing. Probably my favorite AU so far (Wing, SEED, 00). All I ever heard about Wing was Heero memes and Toonami nostalgia. There's not that much discussion about the actual plot or settings and what I've heard people say is that its messy and people only like it for nostalgia but there's some really cool stuff here. The pacing can be very fast at times and it can seem like characters are just randomly changing motivations but I like how they portray the war in this series. The colonies haphazardly begin Operation Meteor barely knowing of each others plans, the Gundams begin wrecking Earth Alliance, OZ, which was once a military group of the Earth Alliance, takes advantage of the Gundams to coup the Earth Alliance and begin incorporating the Colonies through the use of propaganda. The Gundam boys reach Space but the Colonies have abandoned them and they end up being supported by the space forces of the former Earth Alliance, while OZ takes over the colonies. OZ is fractured into 2 while all this is happening as Treize resigns and inadvertently creates his own faction of OZ. All of this while the threat of the Mobile Dolls grows in the background and you hear characters constantly remarking on how they cheapen war and turn it into a game. The way random one off soldier characters are portrayed is really cool with characters like Walker (gives Zechs the Tallgeese and does his best to fight the Gundams knowing he'll lose), Otto (sacrifices himself to pilot the Tallgeese on a suicide mission for Zechs's sake). I started feeling for this random grandpa that was just introduced like 5 minutes ago in this episode once he started talking about how OZ will destroy the colony with Barge and how other colonies must learn of what it means to arm themselves.
It's the worst 90s Gundam in a landslide and there are so many better 90s anime you should watch instead.
>>22933947yeah i really feel like no one has kinda done the dirty on Wing. the most obvious point is, it largely focuses on drone warfare. sure stuff like 00 goes into it, but Wing was the first gundam show to really conceptualize how awful drone warfare would be (and is today). in fact, treize's quote about how war is ugly when fought with drones because there is no human spirit on display. so since the war is ugly and sad, God will no longer even care to watch and give the victor his touch. it's a really, really badass quote that sums of a plot that's really unique to Wing; human vs machine. there's also the zero system and it's human/computer interface. of course cyber newtypes were a thing in OG gundam, but i feel Wing did a good job of really showing just about any person would experience things like thru a force machine interface feeding their brain way too much quantum data about possible futures. we all watched it as kids, but it's actually got an incredibly deep story.
>>22930604I'm glad that this my first, unlike all these zoomers that grew up on IBO, Buildslop, and Bamco-approved versions of UC and CE
>>22933947>>22934279the truth is that the anons that shit on it do it just because Wing is one of the only series without a super duper special kind of people, so they can't self insert their fat ass on the new-type/coordinator/whatever characters. That and there is no magic. Similar at how Star Wars fans got butthurt when Lucas introduced midiclorians and made the force something more phisical and less new wave voodo shit.
>>22934367Nah.
>>22934367>without a super duper special kind of peopleheero's an untalkative walking blank canvas, it's easy as fuck to project onto him as the MC>no magicthe fuck you smoking? heero's a literal fucking golden boy, his name is a play on "the one" or "the first", he's special (needs) as fuck
>>22934393>heero's an untalkative walking blank canvas, it's easy as fuck to project onto him as the MCyeah, but he is a regular autist, not a super duper special kind. So they feel less inclined to self insert into him.>the fuck you smoking? heero's a literal fucking golden boy, his name is a play on "the one" or "the first", he's special (needs) as fuckNo magic! No refunds!
>>22934401>yeah, but he is a regular autist, not a super duper special kind. So they feel less inclined to self insert into him. He's a 15-year-old superspy who looks like a model, a woman he threatens to murder wants to jump on his dick, and he tears down armies by himself. Heero's like if James Bond was more ridiculous.
>>22934410>a woman he threatens to murder wants to jump on his dickTeenage girls making extremely poor romantic decisions is actually the most realistic part of Wing.
>>22934421crazy girls need love too
>>22934393Reminder that the Gundams in Wing are more or less 17 meters tall. Hero therefore generally falls from a height of 7-8 meters considering the height of the cockpit. Fucking super human.
>>22934422>gigantic megamelonsbut hwhy
>>22934463don't forget this either, he's launched a distance of 10 to 15 metres in order to be clear of the crater, plus the ~10 meter drop to the ground.
>>22934291lol, 20 years ago, people like (You) were making these posts about Wing
>>22934466When I was a kid I always wanted to buy a wing gundam model kit and blow it up with fireworks.
One of my favorite scene is in EW, the big bad isn't killed by any important character. He is killed by a random grunt wanting to honor Treize
>>22934466Given how easily they reconstructed it, what was the point of this scene? Really... I also find the direction of the entire scene hilarious as they tries to make a dumb suicide look like something epic.
>>22934562at the time no other gundam stories had something like that happen so it was basically a big dramatic cliffhanger of a scene only 10 episodes into a year-long series. the director basically said "suicide is interesting" and seemingly decided to do it because it was gonna be attention-grabbing.https://www-gundam--w-jp.translate.goog/special/taidan.html?_x_tr_sch=http&_x_tr_sl=ja&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=ENand then well, you couldn't kill the main character off early like that so timeskip a month to let him heal from his injuries, and then the mid-season wing zero upgrade wasn't ready yet either so the wing gundam gets rebuilt (and then abandoned for a while..)
>>22934562It wasn't the result, it was the display of willingness to die for the mission, complete opposite of most Gundam protags who are not soldiers at all. Child soldiers at that.
>>22930604bad direction of action (watch the episode with them stealing rockets to escape from Earth, mechs arr outside the base, but there is nobody inside, just so they could put Gundams in the rockets)main characters are so OP the middle is all about taking Gundams away from them and putting Treize in his mansion so no side would win why should I care about MCs who just pop up to the existence 5 minutes before the first episode and have no backstory, excluding the blonde boy. And no, I shouldn't need to read additional manga to have that covered
>>22934594Shouldn't only the Gundam scientist have access to Gundamium? I guess OZ magically had some?
>>22934687The Alliance controlled the colonies, you think they didn't take over any Gundanium refining facilities?
>>22934687>>22934691They also never bothered to make a Gundanium mobile suit before the actual gundams
>>22934622Yeah, Heero was fucked up at first and that scene work for him, but that should have been placed later and the Wing Gundam destroyed for good. Revealing the repaired wing shortly after was a bit cheap
>>22934702They should have had at least a few episodes of the aftermath, instead of skipping straight to Heero waking up.
>>22934464why not
I dunno, I saw it again recently and it's honestly pretty rough. So much time is spent on the politics of the setting, but it doesn't paint a particularly interesting setting. You essentially learn that the boys have no real agency despite the power of their robots and are just completing menial small scale tasks for the doctors at a scale that could never realistically put a dent in Oz's world wide occupancy, given their current pace and Oz's size. You quite literally see Oz grow faatsr than the boys can act. Even killing Trieze really wouldn't have helped their goals. So instead of the narrative finding a way for the doctors to actually fight back against Oz... They just come up with White Fang, a new smaller villain at a scale the characters can actually conceivably do something about. And the show just kind of ends with that, even though though it doesn't really acknowledge the fate of the original conflict the whole setting was written around. The pacing is a serious slog and it doesn't really feel like anything is moving forward in any particular direction until White Fang shows up, and they aren't even particularly interesting villains. More like a convenient platform for Zechs to act out with.
>>22934466When Dr. J said that he surrenders but will not give up the Gundam, was he trying to tell Heero to run away or kill himself?
>>22935014He totally expected him to kill himself, that probably rehersed this shit.
>>22934562Even as a teenager I thought >"Uh... Was that supposed to be cool?"It's made worse cause Sandrock's self destruct was a more effective at destroying itself AND actually served as a meaningful sacrifice.
>>22934410still just human, not one with special powers.
>>22930604It had amazing villains let down by bland/shit heroes. Also the pacing and buildup is kind of a mess, so it has a lot of cool scenes that would be amazing on paper, but in context they don't feel earned because they weren't given the proper room to breathe. So it ultimately is a very flashy show, but with little emotional weight behind it, decent but not amazing.
>>22935019I think the writer's intention was a mix of feelings. You are supposed to think it's kind of cool that he was willing to go that far with no hesitation and for Zechs, it's a big wakeup call to see a pilot so young with such determination considering how afraid he was of piloting the Tallgeese when he first got it. But also, the previous Heero suicide attempts (bomb, parachute) were portrayed as this cool, tactical move but after this one actually (mostly) goes through and you see Heero's lifeless body, I don't think you were supposed to see it as cool anymore. For all the bravado and dramatic framing of the self destruction earlier, once you see his body, he's just this lifeless corpse lying in a pool of his own blood.
>>22934463Didnt he fall off a skyscraper and land on a beach and not get hurt.
>>22934466Is there an MC that hates his Gundam as much as Heero? The dude abandons it multiple times and eventually just fucking leaves it for Wing Zero.
Even if there wasn't a single other good thing in the show (which isn't true, it's very enjoyable) Duo is pure kino.
>>22930604Heero was my favorite autist until Setsuna came along and I liked Zechs too but overall I didn't much care about any of the other characters or the story. The action was mediocre too with lots of stock footage. The gundam designs were pretty much ass to me aside from the Epyon which is sexy as fuck. It has a certain 90s charm to it but I consider it a pretty weak show, even by lowly mecha standards.
>>22937129It's very based that the Gundams are just tools and not special MC specific machines. They swap pilots for the machines as needed and Heero's more than willing to abandon and destroy his Gundam if it becomes a liability.
>>22937045He parachuted, but botched it and rolled most of the way, so not a straight fall
>>22934594The art direction in Wing is so bland.
>>22937695He rolled down hard enough to break his leg (or did he dislocate it?) but we later seem him pop the bone back together with his bare hands.
The ~10 episodes when they get out to the colonies I actually really like but the rest of the show feels like its spinning its wheels a lot
I havent watched this since it originally aired, had alot going on back then irl so i missed bits and pieces and never really got around to sitting down and rewatching it. I do remember liking it hope itll hold up.I should do that some time.
>>22934279Trieze one of the best gundam antagonists... the good war hallows any cause. Wufei vs Trieze rivalry also great
>>22934702>>22934713It took four episodes to have Heero wake up again and the same four to find out Zechs was secretly repairing Wing. You all have shit memories
I would like to see a Gundam WIng with the original writer being able to flesh out all his ideas and what it would have become. It had a lot of anti united states militerial complex ideas that when I watched it as a kid flew over my head.Shame the show was in production hell and turned into a mess with recap episodes and nothing happening during the middle of it. The only saving grace being the designs and bl baiting.
>>22939380I love her
Im convinced that the majority of Wing hate is americans trying to distance themselves from association with childhood>>22939380relena little headspin in the ED triggers primal part of the brain
>>22939386You think you want this but you don't. The OG writer wrote Frozen Teardrop and it's complete dogshit. Like all the worst parts of Wing multiplied a thousandfold.
>>22939380I aint ashamed to admit i prefered the toonami ed.
>>22939800Pretty sure what anon is referring to is Masashi Ikeda, the original director of the series (until he was fired after episode 26). Afterwards the lead writer Katsuyuki Sumisawa, which you're referring to basically had complete narrative control of the series since then.
>>22940073What did Shinji Takamatsu contribute?
>>22940621Outside of storyboarding a few episodes like 34, we can only speculate. But Sunrise probably let him direct X as a reward since he was never properly credited here.
>>22930604It's better than G-Bitch
>>22930604I appreciate it for being the West's introduction to Koh Ohtani. Slow down the battle themes and they sound like they're from Shadow of the Colossus despite being a completely different genre.
>>22938110>had alot going on back then irl so i missed bits and pieces and never really got around to sitting down and rewatching itMe too, mostly soccer practice.
>>22939386>It had a lot of anti united states militerial complex ideas that when I watched it as a kid flew over my head.I feel like most of those got through. I suppose that they could have been sharper in their critique, but it's hard to read OZ as anything but Strangereal NATO, and everything that that implies by analogy.
>>22935014He was telling Heero to self destruct through whether he knew Heero would do it while fucking standing on it is unknown. Zechs shows with the Tallgeese it's perfectly possible to self destruct after bailing out so the Wing boys insisting they had to do it and die with their suits is just autism on their part.
>>22930604Wing is only good if you shut your brain off and enjoy it ironically. It's one big unintentional shitpost.
>>22934367>the truth is that the anons that shit on it do it just because Wing is one of the only series without a super duper special kind of peopleLiterally no one thinks this, retard. And you're fucking retarded if you think Wing doesn't have super special people. The protagonists are 5 snowflake, scrawny teenagers with terminator tier performance, piloting the strongest weapons in the world. Gtfo
>>22934291>Hating on IBOlet me guess, Final Fantasy 7 was your first final fantasy wasn’t it?
>>22941572>>22935014Yeah, at least some of the Doctors knew some of their pilots would try to stay with the machine while it self-destructed. The one that designed Quatre's Sandrock specifically programmed a safety measure to have it allow Quatre to escape because he knew Quatre would be too emotional and maybe not get out unless the door was literally opened for him.
>>22941572To be fair to Duo, he was in space without a suit, he was fucked either way if Deathscythe's self-detonate actually worked.
>>22930604I tried to re-watch it a few years ago thinking it'd be fun. It was pretty dreadful.
