>>22938893The "tails" are counterweights (pretty sure there's some antigravity involved), most of the joints are some sort of recoil dampener, The shields are used for bracing, and even the air blowback from the shot is redirected kn a way that helps manage the recoil. There's pretty detailed design notes on the thing, can't get them right bow since GEARS online seems to be down though. Also, IIRC the only times we see them firing their cannons they're in space, which probably helps

>>22939073Speaking of crossfire, I've been replaying it lately and holy fuck is the very hard campaign for Zeon the most punishing shit ever. You don't get a unit with decent aim until after the mission you really need it and have to slum it up with a zaku cannon until then(really nicely modeled btw. 08th MS team version's cannon on a traditional zaku cannon body. Quite striking). Every suit worth a damn costs a bajillion credits despite their stats being hyper specialized or otherwise all over the place. The earliest decently balanced suit you get statwise is the dom cannon more than halfway through the campaign. Even then you're slumming it up with no main weapon until you get a weapon upgrade at which point you get a fucking 105 mm ng (the shit zaku 1s start out with). Basically your actual top end suit is the gelgoog in December which costs an arm and a leg and all your suits after that are meme garbage like xamel and hildolfr. Meanwhile the feddy MS line is stacked with crazy good generalist suits like the various gundams & well stat'd and beam armed gms while also having more competent specialists like gm striker and gm sniper. It's honestly not even fair. This shit came out before missing link and code fairy so you don't get any of the good generalist zeon suits like efreet. It's fucking pain.
