Why a lot of space colonies in Gundam using O'Neil Cylinder method instead of dome space colony on a planet?
>>22935920Controlled gravity, and no need to worry about wasting fuel on takeoff. There's a good reason you never hear zeeks complaining about weak bones.
>>22935920because it's closer3 days from earth to any lagrange pointvs3 to 9 months to the closest planet, depending on the orbit and the planet
>>22935920it's a helluva easier to live orbiting Earth than all the way on another planet
>>22935920You can't drop a planet.
>>22935920O'Neill Cylinders make for great mega nukes
>>22936756Not with that attitude
>>22936756
>>22936756Yes you can
>>22935920You'd think they would learn to stop when people keep dropping them.
>>22935920because The High Frontier is cool
>>22935920O'Neil Cylinders were conceptualized in 76. It was the cool new thing at the time and I imagine that Tomino thought it would be more distinct than ring/torus colonies or domes.
>>22943168And sadly tied to any Japanese sci fi forever.
>>22935920I think it's mostly about space mining and space industry. It's easier to move resource-ich asteroids to a space station than to slowly de-orbit it onto the moon or to break it up land it on Earth or any other planet. this is also true for the transport of building materials and the movement of goods to and from the colonies. Also, other planets or far away so you'd have long travel times trough empty nothingness instead of a busy Earth sphere.
>>22935920It's easier. Why go through the effort of colonizing a planet that has a different G than Earth, uninhabitable surface, and is in general not suitable for human habitation when you can build an O'Neil Cylinder that is perfectly suited for human habitation
>>22935926This. O'Neal space colonies are so effective at emulating life on Earth that many characters came to question why we were still living on Earth when we had the capacity to live just about anywhere we wanted. We could evacuate the planet and let nature heal all the climate change and destruction humanity has inflicted upon it in our tens of thousands of years on it, while still being right there above it in the heavens.
>>22935920If all space colonies hate Earth, why they all decide to live next to it when they could have chose Mars??
>>22945157this fucka acting like parking your ass 150 million miles away ain't no thing when he can't even move out of his momma's house
