Why did none of you nerds tell me how good SDF Macross was? This show met so much of my criteria for character drama and romance and love triangles, and yet none of that came up the dozens of times I asked for more anime soap like Star Vs or Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry!

Since they face many aliens who didn't know about it yet in the final war they use singing to confuse them. It's a "the less you explain the better" situation. The singer is an idol.DYRL - Same as in the series, although in the movie alien men and female are in an open war against each other. The singer is of course the same idol as in the series.Macross II - New aliens make their own "idols" for war to counterattack the singing strategy that humans developed. The singers are mostly the aliens, in fact the singer that saves the day is an alien turned good, so I wouldn't call her exactly an idol.Macross Plus - The singing is actually done by an AI. It has some kind of hypnotic effect together with holograms.Macross 7 - Singing becomes retarded and almost a magical power. New batch of aliens suck an energy called "spiritia" from humans and leave them in vegetative state. The singing from the MC can not only revive them, but also be used as energy in cannons, and finally turn good a being that you could call, by all intents and purposes, some kind of an evil god. The MC has a rock band, so it's not an idol.Macross Zero - The singer here is a priestess who sings. She's posessed by some being created by the protoculture and after saving the day takes off to space. So not an idol.So that means that before Frontier the only Macross series with an idol was the original one. They all have some sort of singer or thinga that makes music, that's for sure, but only in Macross it's an idol.Frontier and Zero went full idolshit, and I guess that won't change for a while. And the whole crap with singing affecting piloting is getting more and more retarded each new join.

I just started watching SDF Macross but I'm switchig between the Sub and Dub versions because the Dub just sounds better ( I think it was made in 2003?) Original sounds like it was recorded in a telephone booth. Will I miss anything watching the first macross dubbed?

Myung Fang is the idol behind Sharon Apple, who provides her personality and voice. Basara and Mylene are idols in all but name, as is Sara Nome. If you were actually trying to be fair to the other series, you could extend your cope to Delta by saying "um actually they aren't an idol group, they've been hired by a private military company to combat a threat so therefore they're actually a military unit". Every single series has a central character who functions as the idol, it takes different forms but it is essential to the identity of Macross. Frontier and Delta are logical extensions of that idea, evolving into two idols going down different paths but being connected by their relationship with the protagonist, and Delta explores a different genre with the idol group rather than just one or two individual idols. Furthermore, why does it matter? The franchise has always had an idol element to it, from the very beginning and up until today. Why are you so insecure that it affects your enjoyment of the show? I can only boil it down to the classic insincerity found in ironic weeb tourists who have flooded this site since 2016. If you don't like the music in Frontier and/or Delta then don't watch it and don't come into Macross threads to give your asinine complaints.
