New year, new how is your backlog/what are you watching thread. Happy New Year, /m/achines.
>>23018129Currently Watching Jeeg 1975.
>>23018129Yesterday and today I started some first episodes.>Roze of The Recapture That sure was... An episode. Kind of amusing how quickly everything went up chaos, I guess Lelouch didn't think about what happened after he died. I wonder how long this is after Re;surrection.>ReideenNo idea why I never took this on before now since Raideen was one of the best anime of the 70s- Wait why is Production IG doing this and not Sunrise? Anywho it's basically GR: Giant Robo with a Raideen skin.>Demon Slayer Hashiro Training ArcThese new characters are so much better than blonde dumb dumb and boar boy, damn shame those guys are back.>Re:Zero season 3A while lot of nothing happens for four episodes worth of story which is movie length instead of being four episodes for no reason. Ugh.>Danmachi season 5Another barely anything happens first episode (four for five, only Reideen does anything), taking bets on how many episodes have an actual dungeon.>Shangri-La Frontier season 2It was entertaining which is more than I can say for most of these.>MemoriesFirst of three shorts, how the hell is anything decaying in space? And it's only been six decades, shouldn't there be more preservation? It's somewhat good but the heterosexist schmuck made things annoying.>Across The SpiderverseLike the first one it was mediocre as hell. This one didn't hurt my eyes as much though. And Miguel is in the right, Miles was acting like a brat.>Nosferatu The first half was awesome, but the second half forgot what the hell to do, too much sex junk, and the protagonists were just awful sex freaks. Silent version was better by a long shot. No idea why this got so much praise. I guess Red One ended up being the best live action movie of the year.
>>23018129I'm gonna start watching my first gundam series this january. One of my new year's resolutions.
>>23018811Don't bother. There's nothing good to be found in the whole franchise.
I've been watching Genesis Climber Mospeada and I didn't know the show would be so bleak, or at least it seems in my head.>Alien invasion but most of the horror is enacted on humans by other humans.>Cowardice being a prominent issue in most episodes.>Mint always wanting to "settle down" with a boyfriend, which could hint she was sexually abused and she is desperate to find validation in that role of a woman now that there's no innocence in these times of war.>Yellow pretending to be a woman because people would rather hand over soldiers to the Invit or kill them than fight.>Houquet getting humiliated by an opposite gang after they set her a trap. Probably gangraped, which made her leave town and be so jaded towards other people. It's been quite the show, in my opinion.
>>23018811I am doing the same anon have started today.
>>23018129>tfw met a fellow /m/an at New Year Eve's partWe talked about Gunpla and Getter Robo
Watching Scryed and Granbelm. My backlog is absolutely massive
Just finished Reideen after marathoning it yesterday and today. Holy shit this was awesome! It did a superb job at suspense, had plenty of action, decent pacing and characters, Keto was an amusing mascot, the lore references to the 70s series were nice, cool mecha, and one epic final battle. Was not expecting a giant sword (like 50+ kilometers long) in the moon! Reideen itself was also super yamky, like getting snacked from Earth to the Moon after blocking a planet busting laser levels of durable. Also someone on staff had a thing for helicopters, there's like five different types throughout the series. You anons are missing a real gem with this one!
>>23021386>TankyForgot to mention the only real issue with this was the music was stock and unfitting.
Just finished Votoms, what a ride. It wasn't as insane as "Chirico tells God to fuck off" that I vaguely remember reading, but it was still intense, the last few episodes. Definitely worth watching, real robots are fun too!
>>23022904> It wasn't as insane as "Chirico tells God to fuck off" that I vaguely remember readingI mean, that is exactly what happened though, more or less
>>23022930I thought it would be more supernatural than what we got, I thought it'd be a cosmic spirit with Chirico selected as the chosen one to answer God's question about whether humanity should be ruled, but this was with like, one glance at a spoiler and picrel and just expecting something else, while trying not to remember the spoilers too hard.
>>23023610kek, I'm glad someone saved those srw 30 images I madeWiseman was apparently making decisions that manipulated it such that Chirico survived, but it wasn't really clear how that occurred. And so there's probably at least some supernatural element to it, if you think about how it works in universe (since if you think about it in any other way it's just an explanation for his plot armor). Wiseman can't be simply just a machine if that's true; there were no traces of that machine throughout most of Chirico's journey
>>23023971Me too!Apparently he could implant some thoughts in people, like how he knew Fyana's name (so I guess that was her legal name pre-PS, instead of a name from his past that he gave her, or anything else?), so maybe with people less attuned to Wiseman, they'll just get little subconscious thoughts nudging them to do shit? Including getting distracted from when they're just about to land fatal shots on Chirico? I said we got something merely sci-fi instead of actually god-like, but that reminds me of the Clarke quote>Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magicinb4 who are you quoting>Wiseman can't be simply just a machineWe've seen him give psychic messages to people in his facility before, so there's definitely some invisible waves going on, although how that could travel to people multiple planets away, maybe through the power of super-science? Think you're supposed to to accept that Wiseman was once a person who's now a supercomputer, and that supercomputer can do pretty much whatever it wants. Like how for I Have No Mouth, we accept pretty quickly that AM can do whatever he wants, although that's a bit of an ironic statement for his case.
>>23023983>Apparently he could implant some thoughts in people, like how he knew Fyana's nameI don't think it went that far. Chirico still obviously had free will, ultimately, or else he couldn't have rejected and destroyed Wiseman. Fyana, I think, was just a name he came up with on the spot. So because of those limitations, Wiseman isn't a god per se but simply the closest thing to it. But his abilities were certainly powerful, just think of how unlikely it was for Chirico to survive and make it all the way to Wiseman in the final battle against that army of ATs
>>23024007Well not full-on mind-control, but Fyana's name is something specified as something put into his head.>Fyana, I think, was just a name he came up with on the spot. It's implied a bit past the halfway mark of the last episode.>orchestrated meeting her, and only Wiseman knows how Chirico knows her nameUnless he's bluffing hard, he can probably put some amount of thoughts into people's heads without them knowing it, either not willing or not powerful enough to have people be his slaves. That'd be how he guided Rochina and the general to him, at least.>Wiseman isn't a god per se but simply the closest thing to itClosest thing we've seen in this universe, yeah.>But his abilities were certainly powerful>just think of how unlikely it was for Chirico to survive and make it all the way to Wiseman in the final battle against that army of ATsSome of it was Chirico's skill but yeah, a lot of it was Wiseman teleporting shit out of/to nowhere.
Yesterday I watched Nanoha Reflection and Detonation. What am I seeing here? Unlike the five series these are decent: Better art and animation, reduced loli fan service (not zero, sadly), the characters are not annoying, and plenty of action. Unfortunately they aren't good; waaaaaay too much talking and slow pacing with the main villain being non-existent in the first movie. Also the first movie had a habit of being unable to go without talking for longer than fifteen seconds.Last night I watched Migration because critics kept saying "oh Illumination made a decent movie for once" and while I've only seen the Dispicable Me movies, Grinch, and Super Mario this is easily their worst, about on par with Bee Movie and the first Madagascar movie.Earlier I finished Memories, second episode was solid but short but the third didn't have much going for it outside of the art style and trying to do everything in one take.
>>23024038Apparently later stuff reveals Fyana's name was taken from the name of a girl from his village in his youth.
>>23026179
>>23026286SRW has nothing to do with Nanoha.
>>23026313Migration, Grinch and Bee Movie have nothing to do with mecha.
>>23026317And you posted an irrelevant spam image because why?
>>23026320I want to know if Duel has played any SRWs. He's posting irrelevant spam too, so it's fair game.
Just watched Onigamiden and it was quite bad. Aside from good animation and music it had sloppy writing, lackluster characters, obnoxiously slow pacing, and barely had any world building despite being a mythology heavy story. Wouldn't be surprised if Trigger staff were responsible for making this.
>>23026350No but they are in charge of the new Aquarion, which makes me quite excited maybe this time it'll be a good show.
>>23026365Satelight owns and makes Aquarion, not Trigger. Are you trolling?
>>23018129I've been watching some old Ultramen and Symphogear
I decided to go back and watch a lot of mecha shows I never got around to watching for some reason. Today I watched Gunbuster.I was not prepared for Gunbuster.
>>23026247Yeah, that sounds about right regarding the initial reveal, that the calling of the name was something subconscious. I was surprised they never met.>>23027667I still teared up during a rewatch. Should rewatch Diebuster as well, even if it's not necessary or as impactful, I think it's still a decent and welcome addition.
>>23019396It's a wacky cartoon, where the fuck are you getting rape from.
>>23027923Diebuster is trash.
>>23027667And today I watched Diebuster. Not anywhere near as good as Gunbuster, but still pretty fun in and of itself. It was definitely a different feeling show from Gunbuster though, I think the gravitas of the time dilations in Gunbuster hit far harder than any revelations here.
>>23018129Currently watching Transformers Car Robots.
I'm watching Raideen right now, and it's pretty cool. Jinguji is awesome, the Bluegar is awesome, and they've had some pretty cool plots (like the one where they defeat the monster with soundwaves). I'll probably watch Daltanious next. I made up a backstory based on what I've seen so far where the Demon Empire and the Mu were originally aliens of the same race, but the Demon Empire found a giant alien in space, formed a cult around it, and waged a holy battle against nonbelievers aided by advanced tech they were taught to build by the alien. At some point the good guys steal some of their technology and mass-produce Raideen, the war goes into space (with the alien as the Demon Empire's bioship sort of like Bionicle), and it ends on Earth with the mutual destruction of the Demon Empire and the Mu except for Sharkin's troop (which saved the giant alien's hand) and a single Raideen fighter that becomes the one Akira uses. >>23021386Is it worth watching if I enjoyed the original Raideen? Most anime from the 90s and 2000s and beyond tend to irritate me to no end for some reason. It sounds cool, but lately I've been rolling my eyes at that hot-blooded stuff that tries to look cool since it's not explained well and isn't that deep or engaging at the end of the day and then you realize it's just repackaged anime conventions and plot devices almost identical to what you'd find in a battle shonen because the writers were too lazy to come up with anything else. Does it have much fanservice?
>>23027940Robotech fans think mecha anime is serious war drama. It's how they hide their lolita fetish.
>>23030464It's worth watching although don't expect the music to be as good and the characters don't have a lot going for them. There's definitely a not-Sharkin but he looks like Heinel from Voltes V.
>>23030464>Does it have much fanservice?Forgot to answer this: No. Neither ecchi or homages (much) although the allusions are there if you only wnwjete to look.
