It's time once again, Discotek Day on January 20th.

I don't work for or am affiliated with Discotek. I know they make some pretty retarded ass decisions (looking at you Lovely Complex), but I still appreciate the work that they do. I just like making the threads because they put shit out that I enjoy.
>>
>>23028891
>Lovely Complex

Honestly, even disregarding the whole situation with JelloApocalypse, I cannot fathom the sort of person they were trying to sell this series to based on how they tried to promote the new dub.

With most of their other stuff they're fine with letting the material speak for itself, but this needed a cameo from some e-celeb?
>>

>>
>>23028820
>>23028792

>>
>>23028948
It's because Discotek wanted to do a dub, but had like no funds to do so, so they basically called a shitload of favors and got YouTubers and no-namers to do roles.
>>23028982
If you can prove it, I'll reveal some juicy secrets. That is if I am even working for them ;)
>>
>>23028534
Why does this board shill Discotek? Yeah they put out mecha lot of companies do but like still also most the stuff they put out isn't worth a damn anyways but guess it's good that they make the older releases cheaper and plus since when did we care about official releases this much? Why do they have do a retarded ass live stream anyways? What happened to just releasing a trailer with all the stuff coming soon or have a trailer for each show? What a waste of time I hate having to listen to those faggots talk through bunch of shit I don't care about just to get to something I do like damn just put out trailers like everyone else use to back in the day.
>>23029010
They didn't want to do a dub, the company they work with for dubs wanted to do a dub cause there was like fan on staff or something and then they hired the Jello guy and everything went to shit.
>>
>>23029012
>Why does this board shill Discotek?

>>
>>23029014
Well it is kinda sad fansubs died, I guess you got a point but still.
>>
>>23029012
>Why does this board shill one of the only companies that actual put out material that's relevant to the boards topic.

DRRRRRRrrrrrrrr gee I dunno. Moron. And even if they do, why do you fucking care?! Does the thought of having more stuff to watch upset you? Does the thought of people actually catering to niche audience strike you as a bad thing? Why the hell are anime fans the only fan dome that seems to resent actually having a hobby to support? Here's a fun tip. Anime is made to be shilled. What part GRAND SPONSURU NO CHRISTMASU does your retard ass not get. They're not pulling under handed tactics. They're not doing whatever bullshit the games industry is doing. They're selling niche blurays that you can choose to buy or wait to download. Either way stop being a petulant faggot fighting a pointless war on nobdy.
>>
>animeigo owned by MediaOCD
>Discotek I'm pretty sure owned by a larger company as well
Only independent anime company distributor left is Media Blasters.
(Well there's also that Ascendent Animation company that feels like a weird scam from the website and dubs like hentai and short anime https://www.ascendentanimation.com/)

And it's dumber to get this contentious over the fact that some people might look forward to, because in the past, chances are high there's going to be something good.

You act like they ran over your dog. Just because one shouldn't feel obligated to shill a company doesn't mean they also shouldn't be free to express interest. You're not some rebel shouting wake up to the masses. Get over yourself
>>
>>23029012
>Why does this board shill Discotek?

Mostly in the vain hope that they grab a hold of something people here actually want. Generally speaking, tokufags have had it pretty good with them for a couple of releases now.

I also like it when they do niche Japanese films, though Arrow Video is way better in this regard.
>>
>>23029012

Arrow Video is a lot better than Discotek lmao.
>>

We've had employees come in to defend their sometimes questionable decisions.

Their Teyandee and GaoGaiGar subs are shitty and they don't keep a tight enough leash on people they contract work out to. I'm not a Lovely Complex fan, but I feel bad for its fans.

After a very heated thread a year or two ago, one of the founders started tweeting that it'd be real stupid to advertise (aka shill) in a place like 4chan or something along those lines. You can probably find the screencaps if you dig the archive, the retard always follow the same thread format.
>>
>>23028542
These, and I'm always hoping for Ashita no Joe TV.

I think Mellowlink is still unlicensed, though there was some fan sub movement awhile back. Then whatever else random 80s garbage. I'm not a big enough toku fan to have a wishlist there, but I like seeing more come over.
>>
>>23029288
Apparently it's because Discotek is a small company, and a lot of studios don't like giving shit out.

Which is retarded when you compare Sentai Filmworks mecha stuff to Discotek. Like their Galient set looks beautiful, at least they could have asked for like one of the old Layzner paintings, but I assume they get the scraps. For fucks sake, the Godsigma box doesn't even have the Mecha.
>>
>>23029350
>Hoping for Ashita no Joe TV
I have bad news for you anon. Discotek has been trying to get it for years, but unfortunately Crunchyroll has been sitting on the license and not doing shit. Even with the recent release of the Ashita no Joe manga, it's still uncertain if CR will even follow through. Shame really.
>>
>>23029315
I just made the thread in the same vein as the others just cause lol. Would be funny if it was someone like Sevakis or that fat fuck Digimon dude posting the other ones tho.
>>
>>23029315
The tweet was "it's funny seeing these threads pop up on 4chan where people think they have info on what we're licensing".

I wish I had that info, though definitely some /m/ users have contact with Discotek (Weaboo Shogun for Metal Heroes most likely)
>>
>>23029010
Justin bruh, you need to keep better track of all the contractors you have doing work for you before you rack up more Ls.
>>
>>23029356
Marc? He should probably fact check his Digimon forum better and let the populace know that Joey guy he used to know was a Nanowrimo mod funneling kids to a diaper fetish site.

>>23029352
Yeah Justin likes to clown on things like the Dirty Pair Kickstarter and use them as proof for why Discotek will never do crowdfunding for dubs. They're a small humble boutique who can't afford such measures and Kickstarters are scams, so fans need to give up asking him.
>>
>>23029143
Unironically like the raw noisy DVD footage better.
>>
>>23029245
BLIND ITEM: Discotek doesn't always keep detailed records of who did what work on their subs. A recent issue will be coming up with one of their newer announced licenses.
>>
>>23029384
Justin bought out AnimEigo, and they've been able to do decent kickstarters for the most part.

>>

>>
>>23029400
It's a bit of a doozy. Not Hibari-kun but another 80s gag show.

>There were not one but two translators working on it: 1 was a dude who did all the groundwork and then 2 was a femoid who checked his subs and did further edits.
>1 wrote as if he was adapting the show for a dub and 2 sometimes reverted that or didn't overrule.
>Show was in limbo for about a year before the company put it on Crunchyroll and neither translator could get in touch about further projects or its status.
>Discotek handed further marketing of the license to another partner of theirs.
>The partner site used a kid's fanart for the show and didn't give proper episode descriptions for the longest time.
>Discotek only remembered femoid when it was time to press the discs.
>T1 will go without credit and T2 has been freaking out they'll eat all the blame or thanks for his work.

There are some more details like a potential T3 who thankfully didn't get to work on the title.
>>
>Dirty Pair Kickstarter
I wonder how many shows are in basically anime version of the Disney vault because of Sony buy out of Rightstuf and Funi? So many titles just being sat on.

>>
I can actually think of quite a few things I've been in desperate need of a medium rescue for a long time. Not all of it /m/ but a goodly amount. I swear some of this stuff never made it past DVD and even then it was a crummy VHS transfer.
>>
>>23029413
Some people like to be a little more candid on the Discords, but not Discotek's official one. Even then they like to be delicate about what they speak of, and people like Jello really made things like this a lot worse.

The Samurai Pizza Cats situation should have been fixed, but Discotek doesn't seem to like doing big edits like that unless they see some top priority to. The City Hunter subs have had some issue about them being "woke-ified" you could say, compared to older ones.
>>
It could happen. Seriously there's a LOT of OVAs that just get lost to time.
>>
>>23029422
You got companies that just don't take proper care of their masters or lose them to floods. Or you get those that just have them stashed away somewhere and collecting mold or degradation.
>>
>>23029420
Yeah that's what I was thinking, maybe it's a blessing people are as talkative as they are, otherwise we would never know how bad some shit truly could be.

>>
>>23029427
Just hoping that they won't be punished by Discotek, since they tried to leave out the title but some others have a way of connecting things back.

From what was said of the potential T3 that sounded most unholy too.
>A really smug poster in scanlation Discords that brags about being in a raceplay relationship. Is either pro or anti localization depending on those around her.
> Never completed any work given but expects companies like Discotek to bow down and hire her, hoped to throw out those two's work for 80s Show.
>Felt entitled to translate works by this very specific author as her God-given calling, as well as any by Go Nagai and Shotaro Ishinomori. Too bad other translators have beat her to that.
>Apparently knew one of the translators for 80s Show and liked to brag about the person being her friend to mooch off. Discarded them when others could get her manga she wanted, specifically ones about okama that could be rewritten into being about strong, independent sexy tgirls.
>Has bragged about wanting to translate Hibari-kun for Discotek. Will probably rewrite it horribly. Discotek should ignore her emails.
>>
>>23029420
I owned the ADV CH set and saw it on RetroCrush on Roku and compared the two for some reason Discotek shorten the subs and did some weird changes like change subs even though you hear them say the word in English and ADV wrote out the word you heard not different one like Discotek and they did random changes here and there but besides that it's the same.
>>
Also gleaned from tea about Discotek shenanigans is that they have a translator who likes to use machine translation programs, and people legit pay her to just put Animage or other magazine articles through DeepL. Probably, hopefully didn't use that for the subs she worked on but it paints a bad look.
>>
>>23029447
Is it true they changed "transvestites" to "LGBT"? Been wanting to buy it but that's been a common linguistic complaint people have been hollering about.

I don't like movie box sets. I don't always want all of them and that adds up the price. Plus with longer series if they did it all in one box you'd be waiting forever. And you'd still pay the same price in one lump sum.
>>
>>23029278
They fuck up some attack names, randomly start mispelling Tomoro at the end and a few other odd choices.
>>
Would just like to point out the news that Discotek releases are now going to be sold directly through the MediaOCD store. They have about a dozen new releases and pre-orders already up.

>>23029237
Cyborg 009 was an sd-bd of a digipaint show that shipped with a full essay on how bad the materials they had to work with were. It sucks that it flopped cause because I thought it was a decent release but 009 is just one of those anime series that just never seems to have any traction outside of Japan.
>>
>>23029833
IshimoriPro expects their god to be as big as Tezuka worldwide and takes it very personal if any of his titles don't do well by brand name alone. Some non-USA countries have done fine with some of his works, but one common issue is they won't let anyone license the Goranger gag manga because they think it'd hurt his image.

The Samurai Pizza Cats sub errors really, really irk the Discotek crew whenever they get brought up.

The official story from Justin S. is that it's Tatsunoko Pro's fault from the English localized sales scripts given and they wish fans would stop using that against them.

Going with episode 13 since it's the one with the transwoman villain, and probably what you're referring to anyway.

It's not as bad as that, but there is a clear softening of the language since the word Kaori use in this line is "okama." I'm not sure how it was done on the old ADV DVD, but presumably it's the same as the Mokkori release which translates it as "transvestite."

Pretty sure that okama as an umbrella term does cover men that just like dressing in women's clothing.

Not that you'd want to use it, since it's considered offensive now. Same with transvestite. Which goes back to my point, that they decided not to exchange a slur for another slur.

Not outright but Enoki is to blame, as they pulled the licenses to their works abruptly. Given the bad blood Discotek now has with them, don't expect them to pick up any of these:

https://enoki-films.co.jp/library.php
>>
>>23029436
>Just hoping that they won't be punished by Discotek
They had to be dragged kicking and screaming to do anything about Jello and Lovely Complex situation. After tons of gaslighting that the 'subs were totally accurate' and Mike Toole bragging about how well it was selling on Amazon, they said they would no longer work with Jello and offered a non apology. Said non apology was taken down in anticipation of a promised follow up that never happened. So I think Discotek won't do anything.

Interesting if true, because that's a rights issue clusterfuck and the fan rip of the 35mm hasn't updated since like last year.

>Good
Discotek if only for the sheer variety of content they pick up and being the only group willing to tackle subbing all of Symphogear
GKIDS is next since they mostly do movies and the like. The only sour spot was their Eva release and the whole "We're only including Fly Me To The Moon and the ADV dub on the super ultra $300 version" bullshit, but that's probably more on Khara than them.
Sentai's good but they license far too much seasonal garbage. Their classic /m/ releases are fine.
>Just Okay
AnimEigo's output is good and my names on a few of their products, but you can count the number of releases they've had on both hands.
Media Blasters is cool too but they've been pretty dead for like a decade.
I don't think I own a single Viz release since most of them are your average Shonen like Naruto and Bleach.
>Ascendent Animation
Literally who?
>Bad
Disney is here since it's Disney. Don't need any more reason than that.
Crunchyroll is here for several reasons, but most important of all is the Rightstuf buyout and how hard it's fucked over the market the last year and a half. Fuck em.
Even with all that, Aniplex is the worst of the bunch solely for trying to push Japanese Bluray prices in the US. $200 for Kill la Kill is insane, especially when it doesn't even come with episode 26.

Eva thing is because Japan told them to do that.

Discotek is fine but has minor issues, GKids is great for what they do, AnimEigo was just some guy hobby project for years and ok for that, Media Blasters was pretty great but sadly fallen and mainly just does hentai, Viz is fine but they tend just do big titles and their Sailor Moon release was a mess but they mostly fixed it with new Blu Rays however still using a rough master but Toei fault, Aniplex is apart of Sony and CR so it's all same bullshit mess, Sentai is fine and kinda acts how FUNi use to be when they were around but without the behind the scenes drama and annoying marketing. Disney Plus exist I guess but pretty bad and Ascendent Animation seems like a weird scam thing and full of rainbow people.

>still using a rough master but Toei fault
It's a 720 upscale for television broadcast. Toei still has never done proper remasters for any of their classic shows. Not even for fucking Dragon Ball or older One Piece.
>>
>>23032887
The dynamic pro shows from the 70s are beautifully remastered iirc
>>
>clue seven: A good clue, or just a chance to put on some good music?

Maybe both, or neither.

Cyborg 009 flopping really is a shame. It took YEARS to get it in a presentable state. All that work for very little payoff is very disappointing, especially for a series a lot of people considered lost for a long time.

Question for the thread, what's your holy grail release?
>>
>>23033728
Maybe they expected a show that was on Toonami to do better, but I don't think it was a big hit on there either. I loved the show as a kid and was pissed that it got moved to an early morning slot, but supposedly that happened because of poor ratings.
>>
>>23034072
Grail release? Space Battleship Yamato, followed closely by Dougram
>>
>>23034072
I'd like to get a lot of the other Leiji spinoffs done too. For completion.
>>
>>23034072
>what's your holy grail release?

Not /m/, but Tiger Mask.
>>
>>23034072
Chouseishin and Tomica Hero
>>
>>23034269
If Joe is impossible then yeah, Tiger Mask

Even better if they miraculously include the Italian dub. Il Tigre!

Add to that Legend of Lemnear, while not /m/ would bundle nicely as a double feature and is also in DIRE need of a rerelease. Satoshi Urashishara collection.

Genesis Survivor Gaiarth kick ass early 90s glam rock science fantasy OVA by the dudes who made Bubblegum Crisis. Leads even showed up in Scramble Wars.

Yeah that needs an update too. They've done fighting game anime in the past.

Betterman that wasnt a terrible quality squish and stretch job.
>>
>>23034472
Doesn't Sentai still have Betterman?
>>
>>23034486
Nope. A shit ton of Sentai's 'rescues' from Bandai after Bandai Entertainment USA shutteed never actually got touched or released; not even streaming either.

Its how DT was able stuff like S-cry-ed and Gainer.
>>
>>23034490
As an add-on to that post, here's the list/article for what Sentai grabbed after Bandai went tits up:

>Sacred Seven
>The Big O & The Big O II
>Argento Soma
>Betterman
>s-CRY-ed
>Z-Mind
>Zegapain
>The Girl Who Leapt Through Space
>Infinite Ryvius
>Kurokami The Animation
>Brain Powered
>Overman King Gainer

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2013-08-10/sentai-filmworks-adds-sacred-seven-big-o-kurokami-more

I think the only thing that came out was Big O.
>>
>>23034415
Eh, they typically don't bother with dubs that aren't in English. Otherwise there'd be Italian dubs on every Lupin III release.
