At what point would you say CG robots became properly watchable? In b4 never.
Never.
Always have been.
>>23029265Time period isn't really the issue. There's some stuff from the 90s that still looks decent-ish and stuff from today that looks like shit
>>23029265transformers prime was peak. not mecha per se, but same animation principles should be applied.
>>23029265In videogames. They can make it work in a way anime studios can't and I'm not sure why.
>>23029314I'm really sorry about your mom dropping you as a baby, but please don't post stupid shit like that ever again.
>>23029285This. It will always be inferior.
>>23029318Issue is really a problem with japanese studios, I wonder why they seem to have an issue with CGI.
>2024 AOTY is CGI mechacgihaterbros... we lost...
>>23029333Talents and resources, no different from 2D animation. Doesn't help that the modern anime industry prioritizes quantity first and foremost, resources from investors get spread out thinner and thinner. The Nips never have problem with making CGI animations, their high-budget shits like the Final Fantasy stuff not only look good they revolutionize the field.
>>23029345Well I think the issue has always been the anime studio part. No doubt is Square gave enough of a shit to give Front Mission to their animation team they would make something pretty good.
>>23029319doubling down, this was incredible stuff.
>>23029265Macross Zero was jank, but then Frontier was peak. I don't know what changed
I thought The Origin/Doan's was watchable and bordering on good.
>>23029265It's never been good but it's the unfortunate future and reality we've been locked into. The death of hand painted to the death of animation itself.
>>23029481Zero had some pretty janky CGI in the first two episodes, but the final dogfight between the UN's Skull Squadron and the Anti-UN's Schwalbe Team that took up the majority of the last episode rivaled that of Frontier's second movie. You could clearly tell the OVA was Kawamori and the gang experimenting with how Macross would go and they already perfected it by Episode 4, with Episode 5 being basically their final thesis on how good Macross could look in 3D (although the fifth episode was released two years after first, so they had a lot of time to improve.)Seriously. I'm still struggling with the fact that 2004 anime CGI could look this good. Is it better than 2D animation? Debatable. In my opinion, it isn't, but it is really fucking close, and CGI has cemented itself on Macross as an animation medium that it would feel even more bizarre if they switched back to 2D VF's.
>>23031367Also, Kawamori *really* should bring this first-person perspective shot back. It's criminal he didn't for both Frontier and Delta. Then again, there wouldn't be any cockpit to look at since they gave the VF's in that show those panoramic Gundam cockpits from Zeta.
Now.
>>23031380No. That one was dogshit - just MS IGLOO 3, except MS IGLOO 1 and 2s CGI was good enough to be watchable.
Beast Wars (nananaaaaa)!
>>23031380It was a nice peak into the future live action movie.
>>23031380That face is just ewww
I thought Origin looked great.
>>23031367>>23031376damn, zero looked that good at the time it released? maybe a rewatch is long overdue then
>>23031396
Igloo was great, but I'm willing to accept that it was carried by the concept. Who wouldnt want to watch a show about a group of nerds testing zeon's buget tech? That said, I'd take well made cg if its used to increase the scale of battles and avoid copy pasted shooting and death scenes like seed and wing infamously spammed.
>>23031383Hate this
>>23032742monkey alien greeble
>>23032742That face is eww too, maybe it works with the rest of the universe maybe not, but EX definitely looks of compared to the rest of UC. It looks like it belongs to G gundam neo America
zoids were jank but cool yukikaze and gits sac cgi was cool too its really the issue of budget, talent and time. entertainment industry right now has lacks all of that
