This little thing always intrigued me. Mashing a tank with a jet on top. I know it's because Gundam was the first to attempt these things on a 'real robot' basis and still had some super robot aesthetics, but is there any explanation in-universe for this design aside from 'lol Zeon liked it's wonder weapons'?

Zeon, being a space colony, had little experience with ground and atmospheric flight vehicles, and instead focused their development on mobile suits and ships to carry mobile suits, so their actual non space stuff ended up fucking terrible due to lack of experience and poor funding.

The first Gundam was not a real robot show. Tomino and the team embraced the wacky mecha designs of the 1970s that we all know.

(They look wacky to us the audience, but to the characters in the show treat these weapons and mecha seriously.)

Once the original Gundam was a success and the 1970s were over, then the Bandai teams tried to walk and retroactively change from wacky to real robot. It's like they were ashamed of the 1970s ironic themes and styles.

And it's why Bandai and Sunrise have been afraid to experiment and innovate since then. That's why they release a hundred GM and Zaku variants. But nothing else. They don't want to break the mold.

Meanwhile Tomino makes G-Reco, embraces experimentation, and come up with some crazy designs that are unique for G-Reco.

It's more likely that since Zeon also operates in space their designs rely more on raw thrust than actual aerodynamics. It would not surprise me if their Zeon Fighters have higher top speed and raw thrust than Federation planes. Just look at those engines.

Meanwhile, the Federation has to slap boosters on their Fighters to up their power.

Zeon likely had a very poor idea of what ground combat was like since they’re all uses to living in space colonies, this thing would likely be a lot more effective in a lighter atmosphere than that of Earth’s.
