What exactly is the criteria to call something an "Evangelion ripoff"?
>>
>>23035412
feelings
>>
>>23035412
Slow
Moody
Navelgazing introspection
May or may not include themes about existentialism and human connections
Robots are not just standard man-made weapons and usually have a twist to them, being related to the enemy or something.
>>
>>23035412

Basically the criteria is to copy whatever eva copied.
>>
>>23035444

In all fairness i wouldnt call devilman an eva clone.
>>
>>23035412
Be a show made after 1995 and have robots in it,
bonus points if it features kaiju too.
>>
>>23035457
That should be Devilman Crybaby and not the earlier Devilman stuff.
>>
>>23035412
Being a retard mostly
>>
Schizophrenia and terminally shit taste.
There is not a single anime released after Eva that was actually influenced by Eva in any way.
>>
Basically every retard anime "reviewer" got it into their head that any show with mechs that's even a little slow or cerebral is an eva clone. Everyone. Like a whole subgenre of psychological or introspective shows is only because of Eva.
>>
>>23035412
As an Evangelion fan, I naturally believe a rip off includes anything older it pulled ideas from. It was the first TV show ever aired and Anno's production team were just that advanced.

Ironic shitposting is still shitposting.

Is there anything that would otherwise fit the stereotypes but actually came first? I could see people accusing time etranger if it didn't beat it to the punch.
>>
>>23035588
What else do you have to say as a evatard?
>>
>>23035690
By 10 years too
>>
>>23035491
No, no, Gasaraki definitely was.
>>
>>23036054
Perhaps in the broadest sense of "this kind of thing is popular" but that's hardly a finger to point at plagiarism.
>>
>>23036058
You didn't talk about ripoffs, you talked about influenced by. Although in general the late 90s and early 00s had a trend of psychological thriller-ish, slow-paced moody shows like Lain, Boogiepop Phantom, Texhnolyze, Argento Soma, Alien 9, Betterman, etc. and I wouldn't say all of them were directly inspired by Eva. It was more that Eva and specially EoE popularized the vibe.
>>
>>23035457
in all fairness at least one of those eva clones predates it.
>>
>>23036068
I do want to find out more about what things influenced that era, because eva doesn't feel like it's the sole cause of every anime of the time featuring dudes standing in empty dark rooms facing away from each other while traumadumping/alluding to mysterious happenings. I actually think that's more of an oishii thing.
>>
>>23035412
>What exactly is the criteria to call something an "Evangelion ripoff"
was watched after Eva by the person claiming it
>>
>>23036054
No it wasn't. Gasaraki has zero story elements or themes in common with Eva. If anything it is more influenced by VOTOMS but that was made by the same person anyway. If you actually watched shows instead of video essays on YouTube and the schizo ramblings of Yandev aka Evaxephon, then you'd know.

Rahxephon slander

>I do want to find out more about what things influenced that era
You should look into Japan's economic recession began in the 90s first. Massive economic changes have massive social and cultural effects.
>>

evangelion being the only show youve ever seen

Decades ago people thought RahXephon was an Evangelion wannabe because it tried to be 5deep6me.

>Dudes in empty dark rooms facing away from each other
A lot of that comes from old police dramas, which also have their root in a combination of French film noir of the post-war era and American 1970s gritty police films like Bullitt and Dirty Harry.

>>23035444
>sneaking the fate cunny manga in
Masterful bai-
>gundam victory
Absolutely true. Evangelion sucks balls and is entirely derivative of it.
>>
>>23035452
Which series did Eva copied it's catholic themes and psychological/thriller narrative?
>>
>>23035491
Gasaraki and Raxephon
>>
>>23036112
It does have very little in common story and theme-wise, but there are some similarities.
>glownigger-produced mecha using little-understood alien tissue samples
>the mecha carries a faustian bargain that overexerts the pilot's brain
>kuudere girl trapped by circumstance into piloting
>enigmatic glownigger leader actually had the mecha produced in order to transfigure humanity on an existential level
>sekai-kei ending in which the heroes reaffirm their values as being incompatible with the transformation of humanity that they fight to thwart
It's no ripoff, but undoubtedly takes some inspirations, you can't deny that.
>>
>>23049912
>catholic themes

Really, how so? Can't think of much that's similar other than Uso's woman troubles.
>>
>>23049918
They're certanly not protestant or orthosox themes i didn't see any mega churches in Eva nor megaloschema monks
>>
>>23035690
Zeorymer.

>>23049912

Wasnt most of that catholic/christian symbolism stuff added after its original broadcast on the home release versions?

>>kuudere girl trapped by circumstance into piloting
it's just fyana though
look on top of getter robo, devilman, ultraman and gundam do we have to call evangelion a votoms ripoff too
>>
>>23050008
No, they were there in the original broadcast.

I think the most essential attribute of an Evangelion ripoff is a Gendou: a commanding officer who lies to the mecha pilots about how dangerous piloting the mecha is, and the fact that their mecha are no different from the enemies they're fighting. Like Yuushiro's brothers in Gasaraki and Sylia in Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040.
