Using the modern world as a paralogue, we could lose billions of people and see minimal change if those people were from the right parts of the world. People aren't necessarily of equal value to the machine and if you are only having the lowest class of of them being wiped out it's actually beneficial to those at the top unless they need them for some sort of social-political reason, which they don't when they can just point everyone left at zeon as the common enemy.
