At first, I hated what they'd done with the mecha, but I agree, its a radical change and being at least somewhat welcome to it is important. What sold me personally was the intro scenes that are floating about. I was honestly on the edge of my seat yelling and I haven't felt joy like that for a Gundam series honestly. There is an energy to this that is rare because there's a literal desert of good content in this day and age. The animation is modern in a way that its not over composited slop. I can bet that every episode will have stellar scenes because of how bankrolled it is.
