-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobilephotoresizer

-= BIOMECHA GROUPBUILD =-

Build a mecha/cyborg with a visibly biological component integrated into the machine. This can include:
>Mecha that naturally have some sort of organic component to them (Evangelions, Aura Battlers, etc)
>Mecha that have organic elements attached/fused to them, willingly or otherwise
>Cyborgs, androids, and human with mechanical attachments/enhancements (Robocop, Kamen Rider, mecha musume, etc)

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

Hello guys, I have a question. Why come turn a gundam did not get very many no grade model kits? It got 5 1/144s and one recolor, and 3 1/100s. I know it was commercial failure but X got twice the number of kits and it was commercial failure too:
>>

I feel like the best MS to paint with trans flag stripes would probably be a quebeley, they would fit in pretty well with the stock color scheme.

otoh the unicorn in unicorn mode would look pretty good with a set of rainbow stripes diagonally across its chest sash-style or something

I also like how even though it's the first time we're seeing Rose, Maxter, Dragon and Mandala available at the same time, they're deliberately spaced across several months so you're forced to pay the separate shipping cost each time.

Kits I want, not for those fucking prices though holy fuck man this retarded trade war needs to end.
>>
>>23476643
They probably cut a deal with fedex and get like a dollar out of it. This shit is deliberate.
>>
>>23476643
bandai has to pay more money on shipping (potentially) if you order multiple things and ship them at once. While they do offer a flat rate for shipping they're still paying for it somewhere and I think that's part of the reason why they took away conslidation.
>>
>>23476647
You know those kits retail for 6000 yen (pre-tax) right? Literally 40 bucks. Bandai is jewing us on the currency exchange rates by converting 6000 yen to $60. And they're paying like $3 on tariffs, which are calculated on the cost at port, and jacking up the price another $20. They're literally charging a 100% markup over their P-Bandai e-tailer price. I'm tired of foreign companies treating us like paypigs. The price should be like $45 after tariffs.
>>
>>23476665
>And they're paying like $3 on tariffs
This isn't true.
>I'm tired of foreign companies treating us like paypigs.
Huh wonder if something changed domestically that made them suddenly increase prices by 40% on Penis Bandai kits?
Obviously Bandai sucks for using this as an opportunity to overcharge, but you're a fucking idiot if you think they just woke up one day and decided to do this.

So, order from CHYNAH?
But for real though, how keen are the chinese with custom orders? Like /m/ could in theory pool together to meet the Minimum Order Qty and get some chinese factory to produce it for us. Shipping will obviously be a bitch since we're all scattered all over the world so logistics seems like the main challenge.
>>
>>23476678
the build on these is fine, but the kits are going to look like absolute ass unless you put serious work into them. the waterslide decals they come with are not going to make a good looking camo pattern and it's a better idea to paint it yourself.
>>
>>23476706
I see, thanks.
>>
>>23476671
>This isn't true.
Yeah it is. They're shipping to themselves. They can declare the value as nearly the same as the cost from the factory because they're their own buyers. Maybe a 10-20% markup over the value from the factory to account for the fact their US branch is doing distribution. I doubt it's more than 1/4th the MSRP. I'm being generous to say it's $3. Japan has a 15% tariff.
>but you're a fucking idiot if you think they just woke up one day and decided to do this.
Yea they did, actually. You're a drooling subhuman who doesn't understand how tariffs work. They're using this an excuse to completely rip people off.

Clearly not, since everything is going up in price. Did you really think entire countries were going to shrug their shoulders and accept losing an ungodly amount of money? The only people who actually have to deal with the ramifications of this are the common man, companies/countries don't care since not only are they not paying the tariffs if we're looking at pure profit margins, but in some cases they get to make even more. Plus all those tariff taxes are going straight into the pockets of the people on the top so they also don't give a fuck.

BNTCA does distribution directly ever since Bandai bought Bluefin some years ago. And it also controls the retailer, P-Bandai. And it controls the manufacturing, done directly in japan. They pretty much control the supply chain end to end, except for delivery to consumers. There aren't any unrelated US distributors CBP can compare against. They'd probably just ok a reasonable mark up over the factory price on which to apply a tariff, or if Bandai looks like they're doing something fishy, try to estimate it based on retail price.

I want one and the scale is the biggest draw. Bad inner-frame is inconsequential imo and lack of surface detail is fine since I've been wanting to get into custom scribing and pla-plating. The drawbacks don't seem like the worst thing but it's a bit absurd when it's listed for $170 CAD

Any reason the RG isn't an option if you're looking for 1/144 scale? The EG looks nicer but the joints in particular always go on EG kits. You'll also have to buy the funnels separately.

They seem pretty solid. I have one I've used for a HG and it's still standing without issue. I hear the Bandai versions of these break very easily but I'm not sure what the difference is. Either way, these stands are really built to support standing poses rather than flying poses.

Anon is honestly just seething over Epyon and nothing else. The X-1 RG is the same size as the HGUC X-1, which is right in line with the HGUC F91/V/V2. The Wing is also the same size as HGAC Wing. They just decided that Epyon wasn't just a little taller it was now a lot taller.

What's with this exaggeration on late UC's MS being fucking Scopedog sized? They are like 3 meters shorter than the early UC generation, which typically 18 meters tall. They are short, not microscopic. It is just those 18 meters tall robots already look small in 1/144 scale so late UC stuff feels underwhelming.

My shrunken head doll Victory.

They're ultimately just a head shorter, more or less. 2cm in 1/144, 3cm in 1/100. Not even since they're all varying fractional levels above 15m headheight (.2, .7) that take it down even more. That said, V shouldn't be taller than F91.

I don't recall widespread claims about improper scale outside of MG V2, which is absolutely too large. The Crossbones are the largest small-scale Gundams by almost a whole metre depending on which you compare against but that's kinda lost in most of the kits too. V and V2 are the tallest in basically every line, but it should really be X-1 > V2 > F91 = V. And all this ignores the v-fins.

Sometimes gunpla makes things out of scale, but i don't find Victory Ver Ka to be that offensive. The real elephant in the room would be Sazabi. It is actually only 1 meters taller than Nu, head height wise, the rest is due to its horns. But thanks to the weird Mandela Effect of Sazabi being a super huge behemoth, the modelkits always make it so much taller than Nu.

>Why does wing get a bad rap on here?
As someone who had no nostalgia for it and only watched it for the first time a couple years ago, I think literally the only reason people still like it is because of nostalgia. None of the main cast are remotely interesting enough to care about (Heero is just a walking meme autist, Wufei is decent, Duo at least is alright, Trowa fucking sucks, and I can't even remember the arab dude's name) but the villains (Treize and Zechs) are somehow really fucking good. Part of this is because Zechs is the most shameless Char clone ever, but he still works because Char works. Treize is actually really fucking cool and super unique to Wing, nothing but praise for him as a character but that makes it really fucking suck when he just leaves the story for like 10 episodes straight.
Endless Waltz is good though.
>>
>>23478903
It makes them look better next to each other.
>>
>>23478916
Wing is essentially The Room before The Room came into existence. Both the storyline and the way characters behave is so over the top and random. And i don't think it is overhated here, just divisive. Alot of anons are still talking about Dorothy and Relena fondly. In retrospect, Wing is a love story between Heero and Relena, you kinda feel invested into it and want to see it go somewhere. Whatever the space politic sludge Wing has is just the background and best ignored.

really depends on the part. gates on runners for plastic injection are way too small for resin casting so you're going to want to cut them out. a lot of parts you can probably just cast assembled, but it really depends on the part and what you want to do with it. like e.g. if you have a part that needs other parts to slot into it you might need to cast it with a rod in it so you can remove the rod to keep the hole (similar to injection slide moulding) or otherwise drill into the solid resin after casting. like for the parts in that wip pic, i had a lot of issues with tolerances and ended up just getting rid of all the pegs and supergluing part halves together. honestly you're just going to have to experiment and figure it out for yourself, if you can't rotate a 3d object in your minds eye you might have a bit of trouble and just need to trial and error it. recasting really isn't that simple to be honest
>>
>>23478933
also tip: if you go the casting resin route rather than polandanon's oyumaru putty route, instead of casting the resin with gravity get a syringe and inject the resin into the mould with force, you get much better results. don't forget your air holes either

>>
>>23479124
on 99% of kits it's just more efficient and it's blatantly obvious what parts are based on the manual and looking at them. i've never built the rg 2.0 but i've also never run into a kit where you can't just look at the manual and your pile of parts and see what's what. you don't have numbers/letters to work with when you're reassembling the kit after painting anyway so surely you already know this
>>
>>23479201
nah, the best way of taking models apart is ripping pieces off each other and break every piece
now you have battle damage
>>
>>23479201
This is a case where the Bandai official part separator is better. Things like the dspiae one will scratch or crack plastic because of a metal tip. The bandai one, which is like 7 bucks and readily available is just a small piece of blue plastic that will not damage a kit.
>>
>>23479190
never understood people that say this. bandai kits in particular have no issues being taken apart after assembly, some other company's kits (like koto and gsc) you might have to snip a few connection holes because their tolerances can be rather tight sometimes
>>
>>23479124
It's extremely efficient.
>>
>>23479251
then you dip each piece in a bottle of enamel paint of your choosing
>>
>>23479257
>bandai kits in particular have no issues being taken apart after assembly
A lot of the older kits, especially MG, had an obnoxious amount of smaller peg pieces to hold armor to the frame which could potentially break off. Then other parts would have those same small pegs but only one or two to hold a part like a gun barrel that should have been part of the mold
>>
>>23479201
I would rather not use this, try to get a plastic one since the metal scrapes the plastic if you slip.

Why come it seems like hajime katoki remakes other people’s designs more than he makes his own designs? First you had gundam wing endless waltz, then there was all the ver kas and linearts he does for model kits, then there was gundam unicorn, and recently he’s remaking Hathaway designs like this gustav karl. I thought some of his oc donut steels like tallgeese were pretty good and he could have just done his own thing instead of fixing other peoples shit.

have a weird question that’s not really on topic but I don’t know where else to ask. I’m trying to repair some headphones, and I’ve been trying to use Tamiya Extra Thin cement to weld some plastic together. It’s got gaps that need to be filled, though, so I was wondering if I could let it cure entirely and use the baking soda + superglue trick on top of that. But I’m dumb and I don’t know about chemical interactions, so I don’t want to fuck up.

Metal part separators mar up the parts. I've been using this thing for over 20 years. I have no idea who made it or where I even got it. The two flat ends on the bottom are like the guitar picks but stronger. The fork end is tapered goes around posts and slowly pulls them apart as you push it in so you don't break the pegs.

Barzam and Woundwort is not really floppy, it is just their legs have too much articulation due to transformation mechanics. Abit janky, but not offensive.
>>
>>23480138
Barzam II isn't really floppy nor is Barzam. Woundwort's torso connection isn't great though, neither are the arms. Funnily chink kits make for nicer builds of the Woundwort since they're often too tight to the point where some parts need a little sanding. Even with that though, the CSB weighs a ton if it's ever hefting it and you'll get a droop to one side eventually. The Woundwort legs are slightly fiddly but it's mostly just the little side bits that are easy to glue down. The inner structure is definitely way overcomplicated purely to replicate the transformation though and I wish they'd release a TR-6 with only the flip-up-shins feature of it. The Barzam II is very stable once you glue the thighs, making a purpose built thigh purely for the "plug another leg in" feature would be even nicer. Also a much more rigid torso, the stupid sliding lower center piece is annoying as shit.

>>

That's precisely the divide in the hobby though, some get a kit for what it represents and others as a canva

I also paint kits, and when I do they are color accurate. Someone who does a custom paint job is fine, but they are doing a worse job than the color guide followers are being color inaccurate is bad modeling. Its fine to do so if you enjoy it, but then you aren't modeling and are instead just making 3D art.
For modeling -
Diorama makers > Color accurate w/weathering > Color accurate painting > everything else equal.

That's Bandai's private recipe called Kyouka polystyrene ( KPS ). It has better durability compares to regular PS, but also isn't vulnerable to paint thinner like ABS. They also applied either matte finish or semi gloss finish so your snapshit build can look good even without paint or topcoat.

these tpe parts SUCK to work with. they're resistant to sanding and since some of them are meant to bend with the joints i guess i'm going to have to paint them with latex-based acrylics like vallejo or something because in my experience lacquers will just crack in those situations. they need a lot of masking too

nah in his earlier reviews he moaned about completely subjective things and as we know from his contest judging he has shit taste
I much prefer him staying positive and sticking to facts
>>
Talking about random fags who review gunpla isn't gunpla related. Fuck off.

Narrative Ver Ka. I didn't enjoy building it.
>>
>>23481640
i think he's notable for actually being a modeller who does actual modelling projects, often of kits that aren't bandaibaby snapshit stuff (he has a particular fondness for mak)
that said i do find his videos pretty boring and don't watch them, he has a tiny vocabulary and never says much more than "great kit"
>>
i like that he points out more important stuff like seams instead of prattling about the plastic color or bad nub placement like the other ones do. i watch on 2x though because he rambles too much
>>

I like his old style of saying straight up if the kit is shit its shit.
>>
>>23481682
>>23481738
honestly i think my disinterest in him is because i'm beyond the point where reviews like this have any relevance for me, i buy a kit and can deal with any imperfections so don't bother looking up anything about even old kits from any company. maybe if i'd have known about him a few years ago i would have appreciated his videos
>>
>>23481750
I don't really about what you think about Zak, he's cool and I like to watch his vids.
>>
>>23481750
yeah i agree, i just throw these on for noise or if i want a 360/size comparison of the kit for whatever reason
>>

Since you guys are such good modelers give me a way to scratchbuild chains
>>
>>23481767
buy jewelry chain from the craft store or spend a day bending lots of tiny hoops from wire
>>
>>23481767
there is a 30MM parts set with chains
>>
>>23481767
just buy a chain
if you really want to scratchbuild one you could make the links out of stock styrene sheet, cut a tiny section out of each to link them together, and lightly heat them in water or very carefully with a heat gun and push the links closed individually
>>
>>23481767
styrene sheets like a true modeler, yeah it's gonna take you a trillion hours.
>>
>>23481767
Styrene rod tubes are gonna be your friend if you really wanna scratch build it.
>>
>>23481767
Roll greenstuff into a tube and as it dries work it into a cross shaped form, then push some divots into it to emulate the linking of chains
>>
How do I become a successful gunpla youtube like Rey Studio. Do I need to whore myself out?
>>

Warhammer is trending down. A bunch of UK warhammer channels tried gunpla over the last year and a bunch are now doing more gunpla/general model stuff because they finally realize how dogshit gamesworkshop are

warhammer has always been big on making their own bootleg
a channel on WH bootleg would immediately get striked
gunpla built and painted like warhammer could be big
>>
>>23481841
which means there's a big demographic of warhammer fans potentially looking to get into gunpla worth pandering to
>>
>>23481843
>>23481845
stuff like customizing a gundam to fit into a warhammer army or a gunpla painting tutorial focused on using tools+paints a warhammer painter would already own could be big

There’s no problem with the mgs retard . No bad models, only bad modelers.

I have both, they can't bend/rotate their waists due to the transformation mechanisms, and it's not really in a way that is fixable without redoing 50%+ of the kit

Yep they’ve suspended shipments to the us. Eventually they’ll start shipping again and when that happens you might have to pay $80 tariff tip. Could be months tho who knows.
