-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.

-= BIOMECHA GROUPBUILD =-

Build a mecha/cyborg with a visibly biological component integrated into the machine. This can include:
>Mecha that naturally have some sort of organic component to them (Evangelions, Aura Battlers, etc)
>Mecha that have organic elements attached/fused to them, willingly or otherwise
>Cyborgs, androids, and human with mechanical attachments/enhancements (Robocop, Kamen Rider, mecha musume, etc)

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

Trying to get away from using Tamiya/Gundam Markers for panel lining, does anyone have have reccomendations? So far the 'front runner' is trying out Vallejo Model Wash, but I have no idea how well it works for lining Gunpla.
>>
>>23511005
safest option since that thing is water based, only downside is it dries much slower and more annoying to clean. You can also try the off brand enamel washes, or make your own using oil paint and mineral spirits.
>>
>>23510991
MK-V is so cool.
>>
>>23511005
AK does water based panel liners. It can still crack plastic if you do it after assembly like a tard
>>
I'm interested in this.

>>
>>23511071
>water based panel liners
>It can still crack plastic
So it's enamel then and not water based.
>>
>>23511099
My bad, it is enamel. A dude kept saying it was water based so I believed him since I never bothered to check until now
>>
What are the chances of this ever getting a model kit? Yes, I'm aware there's a Chinese rip-off but it looks like shit and I'm not interested at all.

>>
>>23511202
I wasn't positive because I built the MGEX and it meets two of the criteria. Some of the gold is also poor plastic quality.
>>
>>23511219
gold plastic is just brittle in general.
>>
>>23511005
Why are you trying to? Tamiya is easy to use, cheap, and won't break your plastic if you use it correctly (which isn't hard)
>>
>>23511292
Because it DID break the plastic.

And if "using it correctly" means doing a gloss coat first, then why not just buy panel liners that don't crack plastic in the first place.
>>
>>23511323
"Using it correctly" means just don't let it pool inside the joints. Use it on unassembled parts if you're paranoid and it'll never crack your plastic.

>>23511323
I don't gloss coat and have never cracked anything. I even do it on assembled PS parts without issue. Just do it on unassembled parts if they directly link to ABS. Also wipe it off with a paper towel if you accidentally put a shit ton on.
You want to go light as it will save you effort cleaning it off later anyway.
Also if it matters I remove excess with an eraser about 10-15 minutes after it is applied. I only occasionally panel line on the runners, pretty much only when I'm feeling too lazy to clip/sand but want to make progress.

" Lineart accuracy " is abit disingenious as a discussion. What people most of the time wanted to say is how they expect modelkits to deliver the best traits from the lineart to the kit. HG Reben Wolf is one of those case where you wish they had done it closer to the lineart, you don't expect everything to look the same, but the head design is such a huge missed opportunity.

Molds are almost literally ancient technology. What's newer is injecting multiple colors to get parts separation into a singular part. I think a lot of people are under the impression that bandai invented the wheel when they made the wheel fancier, maybe more efficient at best.

>Making an accurate mould is much easier when the kit is static. It becomes substantially more difficult when it has to also have a wide range of articulation and snap fit.
They couldn't make it accurate when their kits had as much articulation as a Tamiya tank. If anything, Bandai learnt from Tamiya alot on how to make their models look more detailed and sharper.
>Articulation
Action figures and transforming toys exist outside of Bandai's influences. Articulated modelkits just use them as a basis.
>>
>>23512046
Wow, you're telling me that the comapny that had less experience had to learn from the company with more experience. Crazy revelation there.
>Action figures and transforming toys exist outside of Bandai's influences.
We're talking about model kits, not toys. Of course articulating toys exist, they're much easier to make compared to something that is split into hundreds of small parts that have to fit together with pressure alone.
>>
>>23512032
>It becomes substantially more difficult when it has to also have a wide range of articulation and snap fit.

Snapfit is not something Bandai invented. Lego did ( alledgedly idk ) and arguably what taught Bandai how to make their kits in the first place.
>>
>>23512057
>I dunno man, injection molding parts has been around for a long time.

It's incredibly disingenuous to compare snapfit model kits to legos.
>>
>>23512066
>Brb, gonna go snapfit my new lawnmower.
They essentially are. No glue required, you just pin the parts with rivets.
>>
>>23512073
They are pretty much 2 sides of the same coins. Alot of models are still using ABS.
>>
>>23512080
It's incredibly disingenuous to compare bricks to gunpla since the gunpla has to be engineered on every level to fit together well and articulate and the bricks are just bricks rearranged into different static shapes.
>>
>>23512042
>pisses off the b*ndai paypiggies
kek, based golden warrior
>>
>>23512083
Then you haven't touch enough lego lol. They do have articulated parts, especially robot and characters. If you count their distant cousin, Bionicles then they are just 1 step away from becoming snapfit modelkits. Assembly toys were what caused the creation of snapfit plamo, something children and newcomers can approach without blinding themselves with superglue.
>>
Are we still pretending gunpla AREN'T toys?
>>
>>23512097
Literally no one has said that.
>>
Disappointing piece of shit
>>
>>23512103
It's basically just a blocky Zaku. MG when?
>>
>>23512106
MG Hizack exists. Bandai can just reuse that and slap some new armor parts on. But with the current phase, probably never ever.
>>
>>23512054
The only influence bandai has had is the popularisation of articulated mecha kits and the way that they're engineered. Otherwise when it comes to molding tech bandai is just repurposing existing tech from other industries (multicolour from toy+packaging) or what was started to be adopted at the same time (slide molding)
>>
>>23512103
weird how this thing had a bootleg announced like an year ago
I think it must've been shitcanned
>>
>>23512116
It has such a wacky engineering. The upper body is tight and rock solid. But the bottom half uses floppy polycaps that you cannot do anything about it. One of the kit that angers me.
>>
>>23512121
For as much as I don't think Bandai gets credit for things they should, they make an equal amount of decisions that make very little sense. This kit having polycaps when we know they're capable of making HGs without them is one of those decisions. The new Zirius kit is the same, it uses polycaps and has a bunch of hollow parts.
>>
>>23512130
Polycaps is a budget cut. They generally have better fitment due to the material being rubbery soft. But as a result, very rare for a kit with pc joints to be rock solid.
>>
>>23512130
After seeing it had polycaps and may have a breakage issue on the hip it kinda killed any desire to buy it. I love the Zirius's design but it's reminding me of how halfassed the Tristan kit was all those years ago.
>>
>>23512130
>bunch of hollow parts
Any reports of breakage?
>>
>>23512144
MechaGaikotsu did a video on it and one of his hip joints snapped. He was able to fix it but he it happened after reposing it like twice.
>>
>>23512103
I like mine. No real issues.
>>
>>23512149
Let's be real, Gaikotsu is not a very bright example on how to handle a kit.
>>
>>23512138
I would have been with you in the past on it being a budget thing but it's $36/¥2970. We've had recent HG kits around the same price that didn't use polycaps or have hollow parts. Granted, this kit has a bit more plastic than the usual HG and it's thankfully sticker free other than the usual green camera stickers and the eyes.

>>23512144
The hollow parts are on the optional armour pieces for the light armour mode.
>>
>>23512155
true and yet he doesn't actually break many kits so might be something wrong
>>
>>23512155
Given he couldn't find anyone else with the issue, I'm betting it was just a QC issue with an air bubble stuck in that area. He didn't show the runner, but I bet those parts are near the end of that part of the mold's flow path so it would get pushed along.
>>
>>23512160
I'm not talking about the kit's price, it is just Bandai being greedy piece of shit. They want to make cheap to produce kits and sell them with above average price, too.
>>
>>23512155
>gunpla meli video review of the HG Master Gundam
>she fucking breaks his face on camera by not knowing how to handle it
trannykotsu and her are the reason I don't watch kit "reviewers" anymore. When I want to check if a kit is nice or not, I go on dalong or watch a speed build on mute.

chang will sometimes undercut corporate greed by providing a higher quality product - sometimes out of spite. bandai's goals are typically profit at the end of the day hence why they still produce low quality shit like RG Akatsuki. Or why new MGs don't come with the extra pilot figure any longer.

>>
Aside from G Gundam, what's a kit that doesn't exist, but everyone wants?
>>
>>23511379
IME, the leg frame pieces got stress marks and the v-fin broke just from snapping them off the sprews, the feet never went together correctly, the pegs for connecting the upper torso to the core fighter on mine were flat-out missing, and the backpack never went on right either
>>
>>23511470
The 1.0 already had a complete inner frame, the old school elbow rotation joint, and you could separate the fingers on the hands to be individually articulated
>>
>>23512393
Hyaku Shiki 2.0, and Gundam 3.0 are some of the best MGs

RG Zeong is a great kit

PGU Gundam is expensive but the current pinnacle of bandai's engineering.
