-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobilephotoresizer

-= BIOMECHA GROUPBUILD =-

Build a mecha/cyborg with a visibly biological component integrated into the machine. This can include:
>Mecha that naturally have some sort of organic component to them (Evangelions, Aura Battlers, etc)
>Mecha that have organic elements attached/fused to them, willingly or otherwise
>Cyborgs, androids, and human with mechanical attachments/enhancements (Robocop, Kamen Rider, mecha musume, etc)

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

Explain the point of this to me
>>
>>23565005
Fun custom work
>>
>>23565010
But why not just use an old bottle cap or something, he left 2% of the original model
>>
>>23565017
He just wanted to do it this way. Not everything needs some kind of "point"
>>
>>23565005
Have you tried asking him what the point was? Maybe he is just flexing his skills.
>>
>>23565017
yeah no I'm with you it's a bit dumb
>>
>>23565017
When you are converting a part like that, it really helps to have a reference for your minds eye. It's just easier to visualize while you are adding this or puttying that.
If I was to try that conversion on a bottlecap, the proportions would be off, or the symmetry fucked, or a whole bunch of other things. Having the head at the start makes it so much easier.
>>
>keep seeing people recommending lower psi for high gloss finish

pressure doesn't matter that much if you are doing wet coats

>>
>>23565048
Flood the part, let gravity do the work. Cut off the runs with a razor.
>>
>>23565048
if you're using low air pressure, you wanna make multiple thin coats to achieve a glossy finish, and by multiple I mean something like 5-10 layers. AutoCHADs always recommend doing this.
>>
>>23565062
nta but why does a sense of practicality always enrage you guys so much
>>23565047
at this point it's barely a conversion, and it still seems like a waste when you could take any piece of plastic roughly the same size as a base and keep the original as a side by side reference

the sticker is the issue, not the decal. waterslides would look way better. I've attached one of my old projects in which I used them, so you can use your own judgment.
as for the ugly as greeble thing, both over-decalling and over-greebling can make a project look too visually cluttered.
consider some of the more obnoxious katoki kits that come with an a5 sheet of decals, it looks ridiculous

it takes experience to plan and apply decals without going overboard but also keeping up visual interest - that itself is a skill. scale needs to be taken into account, as well as existing panel lines - too much going on and things start to look cluttered.
the picture you provided uses a good few decals but not enough that it looks like it crashed into a sticker factory. it's got relatively little surface details with lots of large flat surfaces, so there's space for the design to breathe.

for my advice, as a general rule, there are two types of marking on a mecha: instructions for the maintenance crew, and identification markings. the former will be text near hatches, engines, vents and exhausts so a mechanic doesn't blow himself up. these are purely text or text with arrows, think "DO NOT STEP" or "WARNING: EXHAUST". however, marking every single panel or vent with a decal would look ridiculous, so you have to pick and choose.
identification markings are much bigger and intended to be read from far away, so ideally you'd have only a couple on the front and back showing the faction and suit ID - that's it.

example: in my opinion pic related looks bad. decal placement is a bit too dense and while it's thoughtful where they would go, it's just too much. the real killer is that the kit has a lot of surface detail already, I'd say too much, so doing anything different than what's supplied in the box makes it look fucked up. this is something to be thoughtful of when doing your decals.

This is why you buy in bulk from Delpi. Not only are the individual waterslides cheaper than from other webstores, but you also don't pay tax or shipping (though who knows if/how that's changed from tariffs, my last order was back in July).
>>
>>23565351
>example: in my opinion pic related looks bad
I concur. This person doesn't understand less is more and thinks that every single armor piece needs to be dotted with chicken pox.
>>
>>23565351
>instructions for the maintenance crew, and identification markings
Wouldn't those be extremely small since they are human scale? They wouldn't be visible at all.
Personally, I feel like making the mech feel used is a lot better.
>>23565321 this just looks like a sports car that hasn't seen a minute of driving in real conditions.

now that's a whole different kettle of fish that'll probably ignite this general into flames for the nine hundredth time
>>

What the fuck is the point of these? The loss of detail and the lack of color separation just make it look awful.

Yeah they would, particularly on 1/100, but even on 1/144 they still would.

Thank you, you have been the biggest help in terms of explanation by far. All other advice and feedback has been nothing but things similar to earlier posts (ie. it looks like shit) and >"just do it by vibe"

Even my own hobby shops, with the highly skilled people there, had never went into depth in explaining things. Other than that, it's just the guides here and elsewhere.

And with your example image, it's all the advice I've ever been given to "make a kit look good and slap everything on that was given to you for the kit".

>>23565356
Got it. I heard they do sales once in a while, so should I wait for that?

>>23565360
I like the kits that has some story to it than the out of the factory look, which is extremely common everywhere. Don't get me wrong, I like the clean look and all but I'm starting to get fatigued by seeing them in every single place and them being at the top all the time.

>>

The only way I could see that even almost being justified is if it was the prototype gundam, where they would do things like add markings all over the body for testing and identification when the machine is being recorded during testing
>>
Anyone been to the Gundam Base popup store in New Jersery? Do they have the MG Heavyarms Custom there?
>>
>>23565372
The last sale they had was in July (20% off waterslides), which was when my last order was. Bought $133 or so worth of waterslides, knocked down to $100, then another $11 from rewards points from previous purchases, ended up spending $90.

They might have a Christmas sale or somesuch, but I think the July sale was a Korea-specific holiday promotion. I just checked their website like once a week, and saw the announcement on their website for the promotion.

I went there earlier today and bought a Haro kit. They have the PBandai HG Wing kits of the other Meteor Gundams. For PBandai stuff, there were some Ecopla MGs, clear kits, the Perfectability RG Unicorn, the Shanghai RG Freedom, the Lacus Concert ZAKU Warrior, and the Gundam Base recolor of the RG RX-78 2.0
For regular retail, there's the RG Shining, the HG GQX Gundams, MGSD Aerial, MG Char's Zaku 2.0, and the MGEX Strike Freedom
>>
>>23565414
I saw in one guy's video that they had the MG Tallgeese III so I was hoping they had other PBandai like the MG Heavyarms Custom.
>>
>>23565376
Most modern Bandai kits use ecopla. If you've built something made in the last 10 years, you've built a kit with ecopla.
>>
>>23565418
>MG Tallgeese III
Didn't see that, it was probably sold out in the weekend. But there was a display showing the MG Tallgeese III with the Flugel and some other PBandai kits, maybe that's where you saw it. There was an Ecopla MG Wing Zero, but it was also sold out as well.
>>
>>23565425
No I know the display, there were boxes of the Tallgeese III so it was on sale at some point.

man I went to the pop up in London (UK) and it was so disappointing, all the most boring retail kits that are widely available online, all the "exciting" GB exclusive kits were sold out with only Haros left and the displays were full of cool kits that weren't actually for sale.
plus there was a weirdly large focus on the trading card game (which I didn't even know was a thing)

Are the Gundam wing P Bandai kits going to be permanently Retail or will they not restock after a few months?
>>
>>23565433
>there was a weirdly large focus on the trading card game (which I didn't even know was a thing)
I did get that EX base card after buying that Haro kit. While waiting in line, one of the staff members went, "If you're here for the cards, we only sell them on Friday and the weekend" Guess they've got a really low stock of cards or were trying to get rid of scalpers.
Some guy next to me in the line was looking at the pop up website and asked me which kit would be the most "valuable". I hope he wasn't a scalper considering he had two of his kids and his wife with him.
>>
>>23565433
Most of the UK gundam base stock was gone in the first few days and staff said it would take over a month for restocks to come in. Apparently someone spoke to the manager of the London Bandai store and they said they were extremely surprised at how popular gunpla was, which shows how insanely out of touch they are. The UK has like 6-7 gunpla focused online stores and a bunch of others that stock gunpla. If there's enough sales to keep all those stores afloat for all this time, then I have no idea why they thought there wouldn't be demand for exclusive gundam base kits.
>>
>>23565360
>Wouldn't those be extremely small
Yes, but also you don't normally put instructions for maintenance crew on what amounts to a really big tank. I feel like it got popularized by the model its only.

What makes a snapshitter? I am quite new to gunpla. I assume it means someone who builds gunpla without proper cleaning, no pannel lining?
>>
>>23565522
They used to put new kits up every week or two and now their in stock stuff, which usually vanishes in a few days except for the unpopular stuff, is still at 90% stock after over a month. That includes new stuff like the Gunraid and also listings from prior to the website update in August.
Nobody is buying this shit anymore and they've noticed.
>>
>>23565529
The paintshitters refer to it as anyone who doesn't paint their kits. You can perfectly clean up every nub, panel line, custom scribe, and top coat your build, and you'll still be called a snapshitter.
>>
>>23565529
Someone who doesnt paint their kits. If you panel line but you dont paint you're still a snapshitter until you learn how to paint.

>Also it really should have been Full Armor V2
RG or MG Ver. Ka maybe? I heard that the Ver. Ka is a hand grenade though
>>
>>23565556
All the MG Victory kits are hand grenades. They all try to do way too much for being the smallest MG kit. It's like taking the ZZ Ver. Ka. in completion and scaling it down to slightly smaller than 1/144 scale
>>
>>23565556
I just meant naming wise. It's more FA than FA Unicorn and on the level of FA ZZ.

Also yeah all the MGs are hand grenades. I still want to buy a second V for a Hexa (and because my first is a decade old) and maybe an AB V2.
>>
>>23565509

>>
>>23565559

>>
>>23565552
Assault Buster sounds better IMO, even though it really is a full armor set up, heck, you can even call it heavy weapon system seeing how big the guns are on that thing
>>
>>23565529
There's shitty builders and decent builders. Shitty builders say everyone who refuses to paint is a snapshitter. Decent builders tend to think that a snapshitter is a toxic person who is low on the skill totem pole. They are someone who is frustrated and angry at anyone putting more effort in. The true is, even the best painters will snap a kit from time to time just for fun. It's no crime to enjoy your kit however you want, but the elitists have NOTHING on how absolutely maxxxxed out on leveling up shitting up threads and whatnot a snapfit person does when they have a chip on their shoulder.

Got my first kit together over the last week and so. I definitely made some mistakes. One of the cuffs is fucked with paint. But I think I got the wrong markers because guides talked about the paint running down the panel lines and mine didn't do that at all. I even deepened some of them with the hobby knife and nothing, although I did make a nasty gash in the left knee doing it. Not a hobby for shaky hands. Also didn't use any of the stickers to save them for when it's painted properly. Hopefully I didn't fuck that by panel lining already.

Bought some other kits to get my feet wet until I get an airbrush. I'm psyched to build the police Zaku but I'm saving it for last.

How much of a mess do airbrushes make by the way? How likely am I to get spray paint on the walls and how cleanable is it? Do those pre built spray booths manage to catch everything?
Most airbrushes also come with an open cup and I'm deathly afraid of dumping that over something by mistake.

What, are you afraid of having to do a bit of modelling?
>>

it only uses the premade joints on the skirts
(I still think the verkatooki looks better thoughbeit)
>>
>>23566277
NTA, older kits mostly use polycaps for their joints and adapters. It is fine for stuff like tanks or Maschinen Krieger but when it comes to these humanoid robots, they really suffer because of it.
>>
>>23566280
polycaps age better than ABS on ABS joints though. Those are an abomination for the most part (esp. ball joints)
>>
>>23566280
Not like you were gonna get much posing from that design in the first place. Bandai has making random L-Gaim HGs lately so who knows, they might actually make a new improved version
>>
>>23566278
That skirt is very immportant because it is what connects the entire upper section of the robot to the pelvis. Mine is only a few months old and it is already wobbling around. Compares to the old HG, that kit is way more solid.
>>
>>23566282
>ABS on ABS
Now that you mention it, MG Unicorn has some seriously messed up ABS frame. It has this nasty gloss finish that prevents the PS armor parts from grafting onto it and cement, paint, etc don't work. Also a tiny C Clip serves as the waist, which is such an unhinged design choice. Does Ver OVA fix this?
>>
>>23566291
I don't think the unicorn OVA version changes the frame material (it was a much earlier release)
the sinanju ova version iirc is the only one that got a full PS frame replacement

Friends, I have an air leak in my Iwata Eclipse. I've had a few sets of eyes take a look at the nozzle under a magnifying glass and it's not damaged.

What else should I take look at? Probable causes? I also scrubbed the entire head system and it's leaking somewhere. I took a look at my hose and it's all rusted and shit on the inside of the connector piece. Could that be the cause?

Tried the dunk test. Bubbles coming only from the very tip. I don't think the issue is with the head assembly. Did several thorough cleanings of the nozzle with hardware store lacquer thinner. I don't think the issue is dried up paint either.
>>
>>23566438
there's a chance you put in the needle with two much force once or twice and reamed out the nozzle past design tolerances.

>Bubbles coming only from the very tip
Then there's your leak.
>>
>>23566441

Uh but isn't that by design? It's air flowing underwater the result is bubbles on the surface.

Full Armor always come with extra protection and very refined weapon system, not just a barebones option set. FA Unicorn has 3 shields, 6 gatlings and 2 bazookas. the original intention of the C-clip on the waist is that so the torso can slide up and down to reveal the Psycho Frame by disengaging the clip from the bar. there's no consideration for the structure's integrity though that's why it came out flimsy.

I'm thinking this as well, but I think one gook review said that there's some part that's at risk of breakage. Generally western reviews tended to forget some things or be sloppy with showing the articulation, or was otherwise annoying so I don't really watch them (nor did I consult five reviews for the HGUC Sazabi), I'm just wondering if this is a common issue. Also realizing that the RG probably has a far wider range of articulation than the HG, I know some people don't care about articulation but now I don't know anymore

>>
>>23567262
Unicorn Ver Ka feels too ambitious for its own good. Bandai made it capable of transformation almost seamlessly with 2007 technology, yet nectlected the QC. Some parts are too tight, some parts are too loose, the waist is a single C Clip, the articulated hands suck ass, the pelvis keeps falling off. I thought i was building some Chinese bootlegs for a momment until i saw the multi colored injection. Oh and btw, the 1.5 version is a LED faggotry and 10 times more expensive.
>>
>>23567275
Now ironic enough, Narrative ver Ka is one of the best MG i have ever built. It is so well made compares to the sloppy Unicorn.
>Wing Ver Ka
Super old, but aged well.
>>
>>23567263
From what I understand, the two games have nothing to do with each other and you can play the TCG without the miniatures. I've read that Bandai wanted to release both games in the same time frame but pushed Assemble's official launch to 2026, so the minis basically got an early release.
>>
alot of the knockdown from ver Ka MGs not being the best version of the kit is just due to its age.

of course the RG Crossbone is gonna be better than the MG, they're 13 years apart, the parts and color separation and the articulation will be better due to engineering advancements

its similar to the MG RX-78-2 ver Ka.
>>

or it is just simply skill issue

the only really bad thing is the hands but it is bandais decision to put shitty 3.0 hands that they are semi abandoning now
>>

The Victory doesn't have the volume for the longer pegs because of the size of the design and the transformation gimmicks. There is a reason the V2 is technically off scale and slightly larger which makes it more secure (but still flimsy).

I can already tell you are larping. Hi Nu ver Ka has polycaps in its intermediate section between the shoulder and the torso. These PCs shit themselves very fast. Whether it can stand on the ground or not doesn't matter, the kit as whole is floppy and weak.

NTA, Unicorn vs Lion is the main theme of the 2 Gundam's rivalry. The nursery rhyme puts heavy emphasis on senseless and meaningless conflict, which is what Unicorn's storyline mirrors.

More like the Banshee being shoehorned into the storyline because they needed another Gundam. The only rival that the Unicorn had was the Sinanju, the Banshee was just there being annoying after Riddhe got into it.

Not true. Katoki mentioned in his artbook that Unicorn novel designs look generally complex because they were for static illustrations only and not meant for animation. The MGs were made before the anime production even started.

>The next opportunity came from a dialogue with Mr. Yasuhiko in Gundam Ace. I took a gag short story proposal to the editor-in-chief of Gundam Ace at the time. He told me, “I want you to do this properly.” I took that to mean it was something that could become a project—something that could be animated and lead to merchandise like plastic models.
Anon, this means the editor told him that his proposed short story is trash and he should do it seriously. Whatever came later was the unexpected future.

Airbrush and hand painted with Gaia and mrcolor. Had to use solvent type because I was using a water based liquid mask. Lots of back and forth.
