Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:

-= BIOMECHA GROUPBUILD =-

Build a mecha/cyborg with a visibly biological component integrated into the machine. This can include:
>Mecha that naturally have some sort of organic component to them (Evangelions, Aura Battlers, etc)
>Mecha that have organic elements attached/fused to them, willingly or otherwise
>Cyborgs, androids, and human with mechanical attachments/enhancements (Robocop, Kamen Rider, mecha musume, etc)

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

Can I use laquers with hand painting? I brought laquers because I've been told they were easiest for airbrushing, but I'd still like to use a brush for tiny parts like vents and the like.

It is certainly possible to hand-paint with lacquers, but it's better to use enamels for those small details.

I went to paint the legs on that armored core kit and my primer airbrush (single action Mr procon boy) was spitting, and desu it's a whatever build so I'm going to be happy to make something at 75% than 0% so no big. I can try to hide it in weathering and detail. My bad for not doing a quick clean and test before using it. Building and painting the underside of the gquuuuuux red Gundam shield so I can detail and decal for the person I'm doing it for. Threw nuln oil over the shield back because under the piping that goes on top it'll not be a detail anyone sees or cares about other than looking nicer for the color depth.

As with most of the gaogao bootlegs 1:1 from Bandai, expect some parts to not fit or be slightly warped. Both are easily fixable, especially if it’s just sanding pegs

Yeah, Gunpla isn't as profitable as one might think. Until fairly recently Dragon Ball was more profitable than Gundam and DBfags aren't buying model kits on the daily.

Every other major IPs Bandai is sponsoring: Kamen Rider, One Piece, Super Sentai, Ultraman, Pretty Cure are all pro toys, pro merchandise. Plamo is just passive income for Bandai, that is why they can just shut down any lines without hesitation. Even for Gundam itself, a large portion of income is from toys and character merchandise.

I haven't built Schwarzette but my experience with other WfM kits has been kind of a mixed bag. Unlike most traditional HGs, the WfM line uses a lot of c-clip joints and they generally don't like being moved around/taken apart once you put them together.
If you're just snapping it's fine, but if you actually want to pose your kits or customize them in any meaningful capacity it's a bit more labor intensive

Oh, there can be good stuff here. If you're looking for advice about building gunpla in general, have questions about repairs, the quirks of certain kits, the modeling process in general, tools, whatever. You'll very likely get an answer.

>are the c-clip joints fragile?
Depends on how they're used. In my experience they're fine for things like topical details, but c-clips used as major connectors (i.e. knee joints) tend to wear from gravity and sheer friction. This problem is shared by a few Entry Grades and 30 Minute Missions kits.

There's a good reason why Bandai switched back to more traditional joint construction in their recent HG kits. Some new kits are even using polycaps again.

I also bought the shoulder joint, I had to shave a shitton of parts yesterday to get it to fit. Shitty pic but this was the area that started stressing once I started rotating. I oiled that and the biceps right away out of fear.
Also thank you for the advice either way, I do appreciate the headsup for the joints nonetheless.

Honestly, provided Chang didn't do any major fuckups, the bootleg MGEX Unicorn that comes with colored Psychoframe and no LED might be the best version of the Unicorn you can buy right now. I don't get one because I prefer the Awakened version over the standard version.

>>23590300
Word of warning though, the 3rd party parts make the RG Sinanju rock solid. Too solid even, one of the shoulder pegs snapped while I was posing it. It was way too tight. Replaced it with a brass rod and it's all good now.

If you do get the parts, make sure to shave off the shoulder pegs a bit. You can tighten it back up the usual ways in case you shave off too much.

>>
>>23590039
Base paint and panel lining are done. Calling it good for today. In the coming days I will decal this thing and brush paint in the details.
The matte effect on the paint absolutely shreds Q tips. I love how it looks with the metallics but it's a pain to remove all the fibers.
Overall, the guncannon detector is a fun kit.

>>23590512
Leave a window open, run a fan and you'll be fine for brush painting. If you're using a booth you're good, unless you're airbrushing at like 40psi with a .5mm nozzle or something.
The fumes are far less toxic than most people would lead you to believe. If you're really concerned you can wear a paint mask.
The real issue with spraying without ventilation is that it'll make some wicked dust that sticks to everything.

How would I go about using mixed paint types like another anon recommended? Would the laquer surface act like primer for other paint types? I've been thinking about acrylics for vents because I heard they stink less. Not sure how that would go.
>>
>>23590512
Fumes indoor are a pain in the ass. Even with fans and open windows, they tend to accumulate in corners and hang in there for days, but this was with 3d printing, which emits a lot more fumes than some light airbrushing.

Lacquer paints don't like to play nice if you put them on top of acrylics. Lacquer first is fine though. Just make sure you aren't trying to paint acrylic on a gloss surface. It doesn't like that very much.
Modern acrylics are very good. I exclusively used them for quite a while. If you add some retarder to them they're great for a nice brush finish too. Vallejo makes an excellent acrylic retarder to that end. Acrylics will never be as tough or adhere as well as lacquer but sometimes you just don't need that high performance.
Pic related is a jegan I did with 100% water based acrylic products. I don't use them often these days though.

That's what I figured, although I was hoping there was anything else I missed. The SD Cross Silhouettes for Mazingers and Getters are fun, waiting for Z and GaoGaiGar to get back in stock though. On the off-chance that urine in Canada, the small combinable Moderoid Gunbusters and Getter-1 are at MSRP on amazon.ca. They're close to SDs in height and lack waist rotation but are otherwise pretty fun, thinking of picking up Getter-1. As for Moderoids, I have Gravion and the OG Tetsujin and it's pretty neat, the plastic quality feels a bit nicer than Bandai's, and they're a bit more generous with painted parts than Bandai.

>>
>>23590522
>Would the laquer surface act like primer for other paint types?
Sort of. I’d you airbrush them without a retarder they will stick just fine, but the paints won’t smooth surfaces or cover up any imperfections like a primer would. And if the painting is too glossy, you might have trouble getting things to stick to it. I always prime first. Either with mr. surfacer or hardware store spray can primer (which gunpla take remarkably well).

Well, in case you pick up the former at any point, it looks nicer if you panel-line the mouth, head, torso, pilder, as well as the yellow bits on the chest, shoulders, and sword. The 40-inch stickers for the sword also have to be applied in one go, but I took a sharpie to the failed attempt and it looks fine. In case it wasn't you who asked about whether you need to paint, pour-type markers will crack parts if it gets into any gaps between parts, so you'll have to do it before assembly.
>Also, are you talking about the dynamic change getter 1? I always wanted to get that.

you have one company investing time into intellectual property design, TV show media and more or less wrote the book on how to build snapfit model kits with articulation.

It's more that I hate the chinese who profit off of imitation, and the southeast asian poorfags that enable them.

In like 3 and a half years, I think I've spent like under £2k on everything needed for this hobby. Granted, I've saved a lot of money due to the weak yen but it is still substantially cheaper than any other hobby I've ever done. My camera setup cost £4k in comparison and that was just for the body, lens, a memory card and a spare battery. The sub to my gym costs like 500 a year.
>>
>>23590964

You seem very unaware of the money needed for other hobbies. Kids hobbies are also extremely expensive, especially if they're getting into sports. A few HGs aren't going to break the bank. iwata neo is a chinese-made brush piggybacking on iwata's brand name and pretty popular as a beginner brush among normies for whatever reason. even though it costs more than the procon boy ps-269 which is made in japan (actually the same factory as iwata brushes). i got mine for like $85 on spraygunner.com with a coupon, it's $95 right now

That's a siphon feed brush so it should last for ages, it's the simplest airbrush design with the fewest moving parts. Same design as your boomer grandpa's first airbrush that probably still works unless he hamhanded it.
Bottom feed requires higher pressure than gravity feed brushes with the paint up top though, and siphon feed has worse atomization than internal mix, so it won't be able to get coats as smooth as even anon's $30 sj83.

Its main gimmick seems to be the ability to quickly swap paint bottles without having to clean the brush in between which might be handy for some purposes but not super important for gunpla.

I'd think that if you painted them and then bent the pieces while posing the kit, it would damage the paint. I use lacquers if that makes any difference, but I could get some acrylics if that would make it a bit more durable.

No kidding? What about paint cracking/being damaged by the piece being bent? It's a gift for a friend, and I'm certain that even if I tell him those wing tips are somewhat fragile/not to bend them, he'd fucking bend them wondering why they're not plastic like the rest of the kit. NTA but I have 3 kids all in multiple hobbies. All in a music instrument, which each one cost easily $1440 dollars a year in lessons (30 a session for 30 minutes, once a week, 4 times a month for a year), the cost of the instrument $500+ for an even passable student grade instrument (Blessing B101 Flute ~1k or Blessing BTR-1286 ~1k), all are in other hobbies that may be...mildly cheaper, one is hardcore mountain biking and the fat tire trek bike was 1200 bucks. Another in painting, that burns money on lessons that are more expensive, longer, paints, canvases, paper towels thinners, mediums, brushes, easel, a dedicated area to do it, etc. Last is into fitness, weights, treadmill for bad weather cardio, exercise bike, bench. Hobbies are expensive, period. Not shitting on you or the other anon, just being an old man you see these price tags a lot clearer over time, and hobbies like these that are expensive but improve YOU are way better long term over "hobbies" like gaming, watching YT/Tiktok, gooning, whatever that you fall into if your life isn't fulfilling.
>>

fitness is cheap, you just need a gym membership (and healthy food) instead of all that shit.
>>

I'll try grabbing some acrylic paint and hunt down some of this multiprimer and testing them out on the runner the wing tips came off of. The whole thing is made of the same rubber and should show what will happen if the piece was bent too much. Appreciate the suggestions and info lads.

He's a straight A student and busy, and truth be told he's just looking to stay fit rather than bulk up. Half the house uses the Bike and Tread but he and I are the only one using weights, so not a lot is lost on fitness. Also he started working out long before he could drive. Having one more drive between dentists, orthodontists, Dr, activities, work is not as appealing as just buying the shit for home and having a few more minutes of peace.

I'm a mixed finish fag. Few things need full gloss all over, and those that do need polishing so it's a high gloss. Lots of things have mixed finish for the best outcome. If I had to pick one all over the kit for all kits forever? Matte. Semi-gloss looks too much like OOB plastic to me.
>>
>>23591476
depends on the build in question
like a death army grunt isn't gonna be a hotrod of a mobile suit, so flat looks a lot better
conversely the f91 IS a hotrod of a mobile suit and a glossy finish fits that beaut well

there is rarely a use for semigloss cause standard polystyrene plastic is already semigloss

Building the Golden Warrior. No complaints so far.

Did some minor painting on the cables on the arms and painted the cockpit door gray. It comes in gold, which didn't look right to me. Applied some waterslides that are intended to use on the MG Hyaku Shiki Kai MPT. Had to slice some bits of the decals to remove any mention of it being the MPT version, but it's came out looking good. Really like the extended barrel for the rifle, never sat right with me that the Kai has the same armaments as the base Hyaku Shiki. Looks very similar to the Zeta Plus A1 beam rifle. Kit doesn't come with the shoulder gun pods though. Bit of a shame. The arm mounted grenade launcher isn't present on the kit either. But then it's also not there on the MG so.

This thing really feels like what would happen if Bandai released a modern Metal Build of the Hyaku Shiki Kai, for better or worse.

Comparison to the MG Hyaku Shiki 2.0. My poor boy looks so dusty.

This shade of gold looks really good now that I'm seeing it in person. It's very aggressive compared to the 2.0 or even all the other gold kits Bandai released over the years.

Ordered the Daban knockoff of the Hyaku Shiki 2.0 so I can get both the Mega Launcher and build the MPT version for display. Looks like I'll have an entire shelf dedicated to the Delta line.

Really ought to buy the HG Delta Gundam. Should've bought it by now, but I kept putting it off because simple HG kit priced as a MG. Well, now it's even more expensive than it was before. Fuck.

Bootlegs and knockoffs don't get much love from their very conception. I also thought the gold wasn't ideal before seeing it in person. The Kai itself has an overall more aggressive or predatory profile than the base Shiki. Notice how all the ends of it (shoulders, arms, legs, feet, the Alien head) are elongated. The gold they went with compliments that idea very well, I think. The body builder spray comparison (I honestly thought those guys were all tanned lol) is actually very apt.

Building this thing made me wish for a kit of the Oberon. It's essentially the Hyaku Shiki Kai but as a Gundam. For a reason that I'm pretty sure isn't explained in the manga. And it's Full Armor form is FA Hyaku Shiki Kai. As a Gundam. For some reason.

Oh it is a universal adapter for kits with no action base support. You can just let your kits sit on it and call it a day. Ignore it if your model have better alternates.

Okay, I was wondering because it's the base picture for a bunch of them and nothing seems to use it.

I've never had this happen unless the glue was contaminated. CA glue reacts a lot with the water in the air and other contaminates like mildew do weird things if they get into a bottle of CA glue.

Sorry man, but chicken pox isn't attractive. These are armor panels, they shouldn't be littered in weak spots. If the guy toned it down just a little bit it would be a lot better.

ok then. Just post what you like, I don't really care about your autism.
>>
>>23592779
Equipment that sticks through the armor is usually important enough to justify the weak point.
Also even without Minovsky particles, tanks IRL aren't aiming for weak points like that even with computer assistance.

how did you do these scratches
mine are always too thick despite using my tiniest brush
>>
>>23592859
If you're talking about the weathering/wear you're probably using too much paint. You need to remove almost 90-95% of the paint from your (dry) brush.
>>
How do you even disassemble without breaking it?
>>
>>23592887
plan ahead and snip the ends of the pegs a tiny a bit at an angle so it comes apart easier
>>
>>23592895
I hate this part so much.
>>
>>23592887
part separator, clipping the pegs/holes to make the fit looser, not being an ape
>>
>>23592887
While you're assembling for the first time cutting a notch into any peg holes OR cutting the peg down/at an angle so it is easier to remove when you want to take it apart. If you have already put it together then using a part separator or something similar like a guitar plectrum. If you use something metal or bladed you risk damaging the part.

Cutting the pegs/peg holes is a good practice to get into.

Has anyone used tamiya surfacers? How do they compare to mr. hobby aqueous? I can't find any sort of mr.hobby surfacers for sale lately that aren't scalped to hell.
Also, does anyone have alternative primer recommendations that aren't ultra toxic?

tamiya surface primer is as good as mr surfacer 1000 on plastic. for resin it adheres even better than mr surfacer does.
the best non-toxic ones you can get are badger stynylrez, sold in europe as mig one shot. they adhere well for acrylics and you can actually sand them. i'd still recommend lacquers over those though

I still think it's a more subdued design overall than, say, the Freedom. The fairly subdued "monochrome+red highlights" color scheme helps unify it. I would go so far as to argue I think it's a more restrained design than some of the stupid overdone Astray Red variants with giga fuckton swords
