-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobilephotoresizer

-= BIOMECHA GROUPBUILD =-

Build a mecha/cyborg with a visibly biological component integrated into the machine. This can include:
>Mecha that naturally have some sort of organic component to them (Evangelions, Aura Battlers, etc)
>Mecha that have organic elements attached/fused to them, willingly or otherwise
>Cyborgs, androids, and human with mechanical attachments/enhancements (Robocop, Kamen Rider, mecha musume, etc)

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

Okay, ideas, ideas. For the next Dragonar kit, if it won't be a Dragonar, what do you think will Bandai release as a High Grade? The easiest answer should be the Falguen for obvious reasons (Meio's machine to rival the Dragonars and all that), but what if they make the uncanny choice to release a grunt machine... but as the Stark variation? Realistically, there could be three of those releases in the Stark Deins, Stark Gewei, and Stark Dauzehn, and they should all come with parts to convert them into their base versions. Overall, besides the Falguen, which Giganos MA should be made as priority?
>>
>>23639776
Meio's three stooges. Gilgazamune would've also been a good choice if not for the size

are robots supposed to be painted shiny? it feels like matte isn't very accurate or realistic even though it's the most popular finish.
>>
>>23639751
I like this little guy a lot. I did not like having to spend a bunch of time masking and painting the gold parts. Still a lot of work to do on the red parts.
>>
>>23640029
1. Fighter jets are also shiny, you just don't often see it in the photographs.

2. They're colorful fictional robots, you can color them how you want. Though the general rule I go for is, if it's a hero MS in parade colors then shiny is better, and if it's a grunt MS and/or camo then matte/flat is better.

Thanks to the anons who offered tips for chiseling/scribing in the last thread. It’s still coming out looking like absolute dogshit when trying to carve out little details but at least it started looking a little less dogshit now.
>>
>>23640029
Parts that are painted on vehicles are usually matte, as you have to redo the paint often enough that you don't get a smooth finish anyway. Also it making it more visible.
Joints and such could be painted metallic with some shinyness from wear.

I feel like part of it is simply to have localization-friendly names on the product boxes. For example, Dukemon/Gallantmon for the Digimon kit.

There are whole populations that only know a thing by its localized name, because they aren't weaboos that do more research than necessary.

It's actually the opposite as you start to grow older and loved ones start dying themselves. A belief helps you accept and/or cope with losing them in this life/forever. I don't actually fear death itself; I fear the separation that it causes. That may be because I do have comfort in my belief in Jesus.

Buy a roll of paper to use as a backdrop.
Get two or 3 lamps. slap paper infront to diffuse the light. Or just use ring lights to skip that step.
Place said lights in pic rel arrangement and wallah. You can now take better photos than most of reddit or this thread.

No, in fact it's good for you. The fumes actually stimulate your brain and lungs to go into overdrive like some kind of doping. More history lessons with Dragonar model kits: The Dragonar-2 and Dragonar-3 HGs are basically 1/1 remakes of the original boxarts done by a different artist (Ryosuke Tsuji did the HG versions, Ryuko Masshou did the boxarts for the older kits), but for the Dragonar-1, Tsuji went with the SEED pose, possibly because of the connection to Mitsuo Fukuda, who made Gundam SEED, rather than the other poses with the different old kits (base release with no Lifter, the expanded version with the Lifter, and the System Injection version).

The hound itself is really easy to get but if you want the one with the resin hiro you're probably going to pay significantly more but they're not hard to find. The only one that is kind of hard to find is the old black and white ones whereas the newer kits have colored plastic.

Like I said I'm going to buy another hound kit because I'm about halfway through this one and I'm not really liking how it's turning out I think I should have been more careful cutting out some of the pieces (I lost one of the tiny screws because it was half a mm in size) and I definitely recommend you to sand and paint this kit (which I will do with the next one). As long as you get one with hiro all of them will be compatible with him so if you just get one for hiro himself, then the next one you get if you mess up on this kit you don't have to worry about it because the bike parts are going to be the same in each kit

My only recommendation is to just glue b9+b11 with b13+14 because there's no way they're going to stay naturally like in the instructions. The decals are water decals so I need to go figure how to use them. I wasn't prepared for the level of delicate pieces so I ended up breaking a few. It's a cute kit though. Definitely glad I bought it even though I don't have much experience in kits. I would think this is smaller than 1/20 though. It's the size of my hand.

Reben Wolf I finished. Decently satisfied with it. First time using these rivet things I got, and I like the way they look (though they kept falling off until I finally used a stronger cement).
Only thing I hate is the tubing on the waist and head. Bandai uses this orange plastic for the tubing that seems to actively reject primer, paint, and topcoat, it would literally be so brittle that touching it after a 24 hour topcoat would still lead to peeling and the entire paint breaking apart. In the end I just brushed silver on using a citadel paint, which isn't the best.

my issue is i'd have no where other than my bedroom to paint and i'd assume it would be a bad idea to paint in my room...?
>>
>>23641904
It seemed like it was mainly being used for their other plamo lines but recently I've seen a lot of Japanese people say the stock of gunpla reprints is way higher than before, to the point where it's much easier to get kits now. Still doesn't seem perfect but I don't think that's going to stop until the yen recovers. For example, I recently priced up a bunch of stuff and it's 54% cheaper for me to buy everything from Japan than buying it locally.

>>
>>23641908
>i'd assume it would be a bad idea to paint in my room
It depends. Lacquers have an extremely strong smell. Even if you're venting the fumes while airbrushing, drying the parts in your room will have the place reeking of lacquer. If you have pets that regularly go into your room, I'd say they're a no-go.

Water-based acrylics have a lot of issues being airbrushed still but they're much better than before. I haven't used it myself but the Mr Hobby Acrysion line generally has good things said about it and seem to airbrush better than something like vallejo air. Please do yourself a favour and research this stuff yourself rather than relying on information here. Last thing I'll say is the standardization around paint terminology is dogshit. For example, the vast majority of paints will be refered to as acrylic lacquers or sometimes just acrylic but depending on the brand they're completely different. Vallejo is a water-based acrylic, Tamiya/Mr.Hobby Aqueous are an alcohol-based acrylic, Mr Color/Gaianotes are a lacquer-based acrylic. All of them have acrylic binders but are thinned and mixed differently.
>>
>>23641923
It's been five years since its last reprint. You can probably find an aftermarket one for a retarded price but why would you buy that when the reissue is mere months away
>>
>>23641924

>Vallejo is a water-based acrylic, Tamiya/Mr.Hobby Aqueous are an alcohol-based acrylic, Mr Color/Gaianotes are a lacquer-based acrylic. All of them have acrylic binders but are thinned and mixed differently.
The most correct method to separate them would be by their solvents and method of solidifying.
"Water based acrylics" are acrylic polymer emulsion paints that form a solid paint layer through coalescence following the evaporation of the water.
Oil-based paints (oils and enamels) perform an oxidative chemical curing reaction.
Alcohol/"water based" and acrylic lacquers are dissolved in organic solvents and do not perform any chemical reactions to create a paint film, the dissolved polymers simply reconstitute into a hard coating as the solvent evaporates.
>>
>>23641928
Those portable painting booths on amazon are fine but they don't really provide enough pressure to properly ventilate lacquers. If you've no better option, then it'll do, but it's not ideal for lacquers. Frostedsnow did a video about this a few days ago which you should check out.
>>
>>23641937

>>
>>23641987
that's rad, but also looks like it uses very little of the original kit. Why wouldn't the entire thing be resin at that point?

That's how some resin kits work. They use the original as a base mainly for connecting the parts.
>>
>>23641991
I've heard it's due to joints mostly. Resin joints stink, if you can get plastic ones, it makes the build much easier, and it won't be a statue.
>>
I miss having a working resin printer but not badly enough to try and fix my printer and then risk poisoning myself again

Or Amaterasu. Regardless, we still need a retail MG Gold Frame one way or another. Amatsu Mina is a good start, but honestly, they should come with option parts to recreate the original Amatsu without going over the whole song and dance with P-Bandai again. HG has certain cuts in plastic that only forces you to lock in to one option over the other, and the RG limits your options for the feet because of the Advanced MS Joints. None of that in the MG, I pray.

wfm as a model kit line is objectively the best of the three. GQ needs a ton of color correction, and the ibo inner frame are floppy. I don't think there's a single bad wfm kit (Darilbalde is the best though)

I developed really bad allergies ever since. I don't know how much of it was really due to resin and isopropyl exposure, but it for sure wasn't helping. I got a cat since then and while poisoning myself is bad enough, I would never put my cat in harms way for some models.

>>23642064
Printing outside and using better PPE should be safer in theory, but printing outside is also a horrible pain in the ass, don't have the right facilities for it, etc.
>>
>>23642092
People have been hyping up FDM printers, which don't use resin, but aren't as detailed for 32mm models. Considering gunpla doesn't need to be as detailed as 32mm minis, I've been eying them.
>>
>>23642114
FDM is really not meant for that kind of stuff.

I've seen that modern high end FDM with fine nozzles and careful tuning can produce really good results, but my FDM printer is a cheap piece of shit that has suffered a lot of wear and tear from being stored and run outside.

It's true they don't use resin, but all filaments produce some kind of gasses when melted. PLA isn't super bad, but a lot of the dyes and additives used aren't so great, and ABS is really bad.
>>
>>23642125
I have a bambu xc1. I have a .2mm nozzle/head, though I don't use it as the primary. Does it make nice prints? Yes absolutely. Not for gunpla though. Unfortunately.

I don't know what kind of FDM printers are supposedly good enough for models. Mine is an anycubic kobra neo that is two years old and was 100 dollars new. One of the belts is splitting. I don't think the Y axis is supposed to wobble. There is mud caked onto the build plate that won't come off somehow because it started raining while a print was running overnight. Does it make nice prints? No lol.

Got the the wing arms done so the frame is all done now. To whoever said this could stand on its own unlike the PGU Nu, no it can't unless you are super specific about the wing locations. I doubt the armor is going to make a difference.
