-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:

-= BIOMECHA GROUPBUILD =-

Build a mecha/cyborg with a visibly biological component integrated into the machine. This can include:
>Mecha that naturally have some sort of organic component to them (Evangelions, Aura Battlers, etc)
>Mecha that have organic elements attached/fused to them, willingly or otherwise
>Cyborgs, androids, and human with mechanical attachments/enhancements (Robocop, Kamen Rider, mecha musume, etc)

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

Hello /gpg/ I am a late uc cuck and unfortunately for me most of my favorite MS don't have modern kits. I think it'll be a fun process to take an old 1/100 NG Neo Gundam or G-Cannon Magna and sort of "refurbish" it up to modern standards. Has anyone done something like this and/or would have any tips for this sort of thing?

there's these cheap plamo action figures that you can buy at convenience stores that's all the rage recently. you can actually use these as cheap inner frames to give your old F90 kits an upgrade. here's a sample vid of someone doing it on a Devil Gundam kit https://youtu.be/anbIGeAEtQQ

Technically was done like yesterday, but some bits of the paint got chipped when assembling so I had to do a bit of touch up. The Efreet Nacht comes with katana and kunai, but I’ve always thought it’s got more of a medieval knight vibe so I’m giving it a lance from the 30MM DLC.

Anyway, here it is, my very first ever attempt at fully painting a gunpla. It’s definitely kinda rough, probably need to work on the paint thinning/ consistency and/or hand brushing control – will need to practice/ experiment further. Also, I probably should have used black for the chest (instead of just darker grey), so it provides better contrast against the light grey body.

Will panel line plus slap some waterslides at some point but still not quite sure how ‘stable’ the paint job is, so I’ll leave it as is for the time being.
>>
>>23642767
imo darker gray looks just fine
I get having issues with painting as a first timer, but how come you didn't clean up nubs and mold lines on head pipes?

Trash. No needle makes it worthless for artistic purposes.

>>23642884
You can get a master airbrush+compressor combo for like 100 bucks normally. They're cheap, decent and any mystery meat replacement parts from amazon work on them. Check USartsupply.

there is a needle, numbnut retard. it is just isnt in the airbrush itself, so you dont waste time and money washing the airbrush every single time you use it

>>
>>23642899
shit that doesnt matter when you're painting gunpla

if you want flow control on an airbrush you want the big sprayers anyway
>>
I want to start getting into Kotobukiya’s Zoids kits. Is Godos a good one to start with? Also Guysack the Scorpion one.
>>
>>23642903
Flow control absolutely does matter. I don't think you actually paint. Every picture you've posted has been a screenshot of someone elses video. Do you even own one of these things?
>>
>>23642813
This conversation comes up every time a RG with the old MS-Joint is talked about. All of the RG kits with the pre-built MS-Joint will eventually start to loosen up. You can alleviate it to some degree by not manipulating the limbs much but if you do, or you leave it in a pose where the limbs are under constant tension, it will eventually loosen up. If/when this happens, you can resolve it by gluing those parts into a fixed pose, or thickening the specific joint in various ways.
>>
>>23642909
Check the country in his amazon screenshot. It's another 3rd worlder shitting the thread up. Do not engage with them.

>>23643673
Well the texture is noticeably not bare plastic. Though in this case, that is not a good thing because it looks rough. That said, a properly done smooth paint job will still look different from bare plastic.

use a dropper and apply a number of drops baaed on its percentage. for a example, if a color calls for 90% white and 10% red, put 9 drops of white, then 1 drop of red, if you need more, add 9 more red and 1 more white, and so on.
>>
>>23643711
if the color calls for a weird ratio like 25%, instead of doing 2.5 drops, do 5 drops, then double the drop amount at the rest.

The acguy having a passenger seat for commando operations is kind of a nice touch. I wish the Dozel MG kits had an enlarged cockpit to fit Dozel's fat ass like they're mentioned to have. That's asking for too much from Bandai though.

The only thing that bugs me about the RG Red Dragon's announcement is the fact that they reissued the HG Red Dragon late last month. So, I feel bad for people who ordered the HG but might like the RG more.

>HGUC Balls went up in price but went back down slightly from a sale
>bought them and they should be arriving
>each one is slightly more than the price of a GM
I think someone here said that they do come with a stand and both kinds of weapons, and that the GM is a substantially older kit, but still. I can't help but think about it "rationally" for the made-up cartoon universe, there's no situation where you'd sub in a Ball for a trusty GM
>>
>>23643768
Isn't the ball sold in pairs?
>>
>>23643748
Bandai is profit-driven like all companies.
You can put 2+2 together.
>>
>>23643772
Careful, you might make some autists seethe by insinuating that g-reco wasn’t some massive commercial success
>>
>>23643771
Yeah, but it was like $22 after the sale, close to the initial $20 price. $20 for two Balls, but GMs go for about $10. I understand that the GM is an older kit, I understand that it's fair for the Ball to have articulation about as limited as the GM because there's realistically nothing else I can expect it to do without being the MG. But it still feels like the two-pack should have been $15.
>>
>>23643779
The ball is actually decently large. I think for 20 bucks I would look for the master grade one on sale though. I don't see the appeal of two, beyond the joke of it being a pair of balls.
>>
>>23643782
I did consider the MG for a bit, but I realized I could buy some nicer HG or add extra for an RG and it's just literally a Ball
>I don't see the appeal of two, beyond the joke of it being a pair of balls.
Well I would have liked them being sold individually, but they come in twos. And at least they each have two types of weapons (4 are given to you in total) so you can have one of each type hanging around.

I agree but I felt like I didn't have too much of a choice. I use my secondary color to "frame" the primary and I wanted to keep the sort of sloped, core part of the head (red arrow) here in teal, with the light grey parts looking "added on" . The dark grey was an emergency fix because the two blue dotted sections are two different parts and I had accidentally made one teal and the other light grey

injection mold release or oil from handling can interfere with paint adhesion. "washing" can be as simple as spraying a bit of IPA through the airbrush just before priming, but also don't worry a lot about it unless the parts seem oily or you had greasy hands during building.

Zakus fall under the Signature First Series Rule, where they and the RX-78-2 are always first in line to get kits any time a new line opens up, as well as Revives. >>

>>23645407
They have a bunch of screws and the master gundam is missing any features related to the cloak. The things also need a pretty good amount of color correction. They're fine once they're built but getting there is a drag. They also have weird rubber hands and feet. The feet are nice since it helps them do action poses but the hands are a really weird choice. The things were really experimental and almost nothing they did ever got picked up for other kits. The transformations into super mode also kinda suck.
There's also a master grade spiegel though, and it's the best version of the suit.
>>
>>23645420

>>
>>23645433
A lot of people really, really do not like screws.

Why? They're great, you can make joints as tight as you want, if they got loose you can screw them a bit more. There are not flaws to them

Screws are not bad, they are just annoying to work with. Majority of modelkits have moved on from that and resolve to either cement or fully snapfit.

>start with the rounded and blocky robots?
They make those all the time. You just need to keep up with their speed because they produce alot of kits in a short span of time.
>>
>>23645778
They won't. Unlike videogames and softwares that you can just fix the code, when a modelkit has problems, you will have to make a new mold for it, which is something Bandai won't do unless it is a revival kit of an older one or simple fix like RG 2.0's forehead. When the entire inner frame has issues, then yeah, it is perpetually fucked.
>>
>>23645786
Reddit was really coping hard with this one and everyone was defending Bandai saying trust the plan and that it’s only floppy because it’s a demo and that the production ones will be fixed

Progress continues. Also my body LEDs stopped working! I'm pretty sure it's something with the coin battery holder, as I had to occasionally push then before putting the armor on, but I'm not wanting to go look up how those work exactly to make sure it is shaped right.
Wouldn't mind if someone else working on the kit could snap a picture from the rear of the torso with it in focus.
>>
I hate that the redditors get to enjoy their shitty secret santa thing because if we tried that shit here half of us would get shitpla and the other half would get nothing
>>
>>23645791
The last possible cope is that the demonstration model has been articulated too much in testing, so the joints are loose.
But I just don't believe it. It feels just as likely that John Bandai has grown arrogant to the extreme and didn't care enough about QA.
>>
>>23645806
/a/ has secret santa and it's mostly fine. You're underestimating power of festive spirit
>>
>>23645807
I don't expect a modelkit to stay tight forever, but man, if it can't do the bare minimum such as standing on the table with its two giant clown shoes then it is a fucking joke. Even the most dogshit RG can do that.

>It feels just as likely that John Bandai has grown arrogant to the extreme and didn't care enough about QA.
Their QC department is a mixed bag. We got RG Akatsuki and HG Reben Wolf in the same time period. And let's not bring up the C Clip atrocity around 3 years ago when literally every kits they released have it.
>>
Guys I have a question. How come only gundamslop gets perfect grades? Why come there’s no like perfect grade sazabi or hyaku shiki or something? I think the only non gundam one is zaku.
>>
>>23645842
Gundams are the face of the franchise
If you want non-gundams, buy PG Eva or Millennium Falcon
>>
>>23645842
Bad guy MS are often much bigger than Gundams and much more complicated in design.
>>
>>23645765
So is it too top-heavy or something to not support its weight? My RG Nu can stand on its own without the funnels, can the MG do the same?
>>
>>23645851
literally no one can give you a real answer to your question because the model kit isn't in the public's hands to even gauge how the production kit actually is
>>
>>23645847
Why? There’s plenty of other good mobile suits besides gundamslop. In many shows they often surpass the main gundams actually.
>>
>>23645842
Because they're not going to spend resources designing, producing and shipping a kit that isn't going to sell. The fact that you have shit taste won't change matters.
>>
>>23645858
They still aren't going to make a high end $300-$500 kit of a suit that maybe a dozen people give a shit about
That's what garage kits were for and that ship sailed decades ago

Wow!
>>
>>23645865
It shouldn’t be. Tomino fought really hard to move away from the gundam name but Bandai retards pushed back. Eventually he almost got his way with Reconguista in G.
>>
>>23645868
why are you even here
>>
>>23645864
Bandai's gunpla is a victim of itself. Chinese studios are small sized indie, their system are not bloated with useless people and don't have to care if a modelkit can sell billions to keep their system alive. The whole " corporation execs are tonedeaf" comes into play as well.
>>
>>23645869
nta but this is a plamo thread, not exclusively gunpla
>>
>>23645866
>you don't have to give a shit about QC, workers rights, marketing, supply chain, distribution or retail space
Bandai is qualified for all of these. Have you heard of their mental torture room to force their employees quit?
>>
>>23645870
They also blatantly ignore IP rights. That saves a shitload of money in marketing.
>>
>>23645872
While that's true, if someone somehow hates every single Gundam, I really question what they're even doing on this board and what they actually like
>>
>>23645870
Those kinds of studios also exist in Japan, they just charge ridiculous money for terrible quality
>>
>>23645877
Because they don't actually hate Gundam, they're just ragebaiting for replies. Don't take their bad faith "arguments" at face value.
>>
>>23645877
I don’t hate every single gundam lol. I just don’t think that every single perfect grade needs to be one. It gives me gundam fatigue. I like the doven wolfs and hamma hammas to keep things fresh.

A large chunk of Chinkpla are OCs and they sell well. They advertise their kits through Weibo and pay for Hongkong influencer to post the promo on Twitter, Facebook and other sites. Hemoxian and OrangeCat even got picked up by Kotobukiya and Wave to publish their stuff, from OC to liscenced designs. Bandai actually got it easier in some way because they have a strong brand identity and Gundam has become their inhouse IP since the 90s.

>>
>>23645909
It's an important distinction to make because until 2020 anyone could make Gundam kits
You had licensed Gundam kits by companies like Wave, Volks and Koto, and tons of indie studios as well
Bandai shut that shit down for good in 2020
>>23645914
Bandai bought Sunrise but not the production company that held the merchandising and licensing rights (Sotsu)
Bandai didn't actually have full control over every aspect of the franchise until 2020
>>
>>23645924
What are some good non Bandai gundams? I like the volks shuffle joker.
>>
>>23645615
They got swept up during the supply-constrained COVID gunpla boom-period from 2020-2022 and started taking on a ton of inventory and warehouse space to store that inventory.

If you weren't around then P-Bandai drops were selling out in 5 minutes no matter what the kit and the only thing you could easily find on shelves was shit like gundam breaker battlogue kits. Even paint releases were selling out within minutes. During those days Newtype said their company policy was no sales, ever.

Anyways once supply chains started normalizing and people weren't buying shit regardless of what it was (remember the Zeta ver ka shelfwarming despite releasing right after a year where the only MGs to release were 2.0 doms?), those mom and pop shops were left holding the bag, left with massive inventories they could move, having to pay rent to store those inventories, and continuing to get large quantities of backlogged orders they made during the pandemic from Bandai.

Tariffs were just the finishing blow
>>
>>23645420
>all of that
>BUT the MG is the best version of the Spiegel, because there's only two kits
This is grim
>had a screw for even just a literal stand
>finally get it to the right amount of tightness

>>
>>23645924
Doesn't change the fact that Bandai have alot more advantages compares to those random Chang studios. Their post 2020 gunpla are more expensive inspite of their freedom from liscencing hell lol.
>>
>>23645880
Now that you mention this, the pricing really is up to either the Jap or the Changs. I was wondering why Estailev kits are so cheap compares to other Wave releases, until i realized that the studio made the kit is Chinese.
