-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobilephotoresizer

Mascot anon here. I would like to apologize for the delay. I was meant to talk about this earlier but I wasn't able to find the right opportunity to. I was busy with many thing in the past few month with everything piling up toward the end of the group build, then catching a cold on top of that, I wasn't able to finish everything in time.
Because of how delayed everything is on my end, I am not opening the request yet, but I would like to ask when would be the best time to open my next request to give everyone a more fair chance to make their requests. I should have around 3 slot available this time.

So far, I have only finished one for Plan A, but if everything went right, I should be able to deliver the mascot within the next thread or two.
Unfortunately, I was caught in an image range ban as of now, so I might have to use site like catbox(dot)moe to upload the image for now. If possible, I would like it if some anon here can confirm if I got the site address right befoe posting it.

HG Full armor Unicorn has the triple missile pod box. The HGGTO Zaku II (green and Char's Custom) come with bazooka magazines that also happen to look like triple missile pods. There might be a few other kits, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

china came up with tons of cool completely original designs for model kits, it just doesn't reach bandaibabs channels who only catch notgundams and spikefests
>>
>>23664785
Why do the bandaibabs love the spikefests so much?
>>
>>23664772
They have zero idea how to properly design a mecha, so they just trace a Gundam and add their own flair.

>>23664808
I think it was funny the story where the chinks actually commissioned okawara or one of the Japanese guys to draw some robots for them since they can’t properly design their own mecha, but then they were disappointed when they found out the chinks just wanted them to do not-gundams

True. I can spot gayboo's genuinely awful design philosophy a mile away. He has a unique midas touch for everything he designs, though instead of gold it's poo.

It's a rotation of Barbatos, Exia, and Destiny/Freedom.

Finished snapping the Full Cloth. Going to hold off posing it until the enamel I used for the crossbow dries fully. Not sure how I feel about the few dry decals included, I feel like plain matches the manga more and also what a pirate machine would have.
Kit has a ton of ABS so I'm not going to be able to use my usual clear coat. My local hobby store has both Vallejo and Tamiya clears in stock, which is easier to use with an airbrush? Ngl I warmed up to the HGUC Guntank and remembered thinking that it could do all it needed to do, and felt that I grew up a bit by accepting something old despite its faults and age, but hold on.
>swivel its arms forward
What do you mean, although its elbows are less than 90 degrees
>no torso rotation
Ok that's fair, although I assumed it never did that, that or I thought it'd simply just rotate on its treads
>tanks also had turrets that could do a full 180(?)
Ok fair
>no wheels
I think that'd bump up the price a bit and I don't know how you'd do the treads (I have not looked at any other Guntanks)
I guess you could give it an ab or neck tilt and improve it, but it also feels like it gets the job done instead of being like, the old Zaku II kit or something else that rightly got an update.

I went to a Warhammer store in Manchester and asked the clerk if they sold airbrushes. They didn’t have any, so I mentioned that I wanted to build a painting station for Gunpla though I’m still really new to this hobby. He recommended that I paint with Citadel acrylics instead, since they’re safer and easy to find in most Games Workshop stores. Should I follow his advice as beginner?

No, look for AK or Vallejo acrylics instead. Citadel paints are more expensive and the pots are built to make your paint dry up faster.

Anon, that's just retail talk to get you to buy paints from them. Citadel paints are good, but very pricey. If that's what you want to use, then go ahead; Warhammer stores are a reliable source for them. But there's also less expensive alternatives that work with airbrushes and perform just as well.

My airbrush completely failed while I was gloss coating. This has never happened to me but no matter how many times I cleaned it, the brush simply would not shoot pigment.
When I ran hardware store tier lacquer thinner through it, it would only drip if it was touching a surface like the liquid needed help getting through. Is it fucked, or is there something I can do about it? I doubt you could fit something thin enough, and strong enough through a tiny ass airbrush nozzle to dislodge that gunk.

White marks that don’t go away after sanding are stress marks and go deep into the plastic, they’re made when cutting off the runner. Cut further away then closer with the two snip method, or your nippers could be crushing instead of cutting (double vs single-blade). If it exists then paint over it, or you can scratch at it with a fingernail and that occasionally works

Of using it instead of brush with occasional sponge. Mainly because how much space equipment takes and how much time I have to spend on getting everything out and later pack back after work, even if flushing airbrush itself and take out needle and nozzle for cleaning only takes 10-20 min.
>>
>>23665961
>>23665958
I want to add that camo pattern was not initially planned but since I assumed that whole painting of Ez-Sr in custom colours is a training, I might as well exercise painting lines instead of just spraying over large area.

But I won't deny that painting large parts is quicker and easier that way. I simply feel that I'm much more "in control" with normal brush. Then again, guys like Angel Giraldez use both normal brush and airbrush precisely because different nature of the tools gives them different effects they desire to utilize so mastering both makes sense.

For starters, the Jegan saw action in F91 as well as Unicorn, as opposed to just CCA, whereas the Geara Doga pretty much got immediately replaced by the Geara Zulu in Unicorn. It's kind of hard to be memorable when your only real appearance is in a single movie.

Additionally, the Zaku is just a classic. You can't replace a classic.

holy hell that's a major red flag
1. that shit head is trying to sell you on a product
2. gw paint is expensive and comes in pots you should only ever use dropper bottles
3. you can use acrylics for gunpla but they need to be thinned with acrylic thinner and you must add flow aid to the mix
>>
>>23666074
crummy thinner and flow aid? you should've used water
>>
>>23665966
>that camo pattern was not initially planned
it looks cool so I would call it a happy accident, although I would add a little bit of buff to each color. it helps make the camo look more uniform if they all have a common color mixed in. try playing around on some paper to see what I mean.
>>
>>23666075

You need thinner instead of water for airbrushing. It'll keep it from beading up and helps it coat evenly. You should also be adding some retarder to the mix. Vallejo makes a good one that works with any water based acrylic. It also works with aqueous hobby color and tamiya acrylics.
>>
>>23666078
damn that sucks
yeah if you're airbrushing anyways might as well use the cancer fluids instead of acrylics

>>
>>23666085
it depends on what you are trying to do, acrylics aren't hard to work with you they just don't flow as well out of an airbrush, that's why you need to add flow aid. lacquer paints still require thinner and are definitely more caustic.

>>
>>23666059
>>23666064
Because I flush it twice with backflow in between and after everything done, I also take away needle and clean it since there is always some residual paint left. Plus I take things apart and back slowly to avoid damaging any components. Second post describe quick colour change, where it's definitely enough.
>>
>>23666089
don't you need a mask anyways if you're blasting, regardless of type of paint?
>>
>>23666107
yes but you can get away with spraying acrylics inside as long as you have an open window.
>>
>>23666101
it's nothing like that example because the scale of value is fractional. oh no a few dollars extra spent because you went to a Warhammer store and got told their paints are fine for doing what you want to do (they are). Maybe don't go to a store specifically for a single fucking company, maybe use your brain as a consumer too.
>>
>>23666107
NTA but there is a difference between wearing P3 mask during spraying to prevent inhaling atomized paint and having to use active ventilation system and mask with both anti-dust and organic filters due to all the fumes released. I wouldn't spray lacquers in same room where I sleep while it's completely okay with acrylics since paint particles will settle down after few minutes, cardboard box alone will catch most of them and P3 mask will prevent you from inhaling any overspray and such.
>>
>>23666100
Citadels paints are really fragile and are way too expensive for the generally poor performance. You could get vallejo for cheaper and it's just better paint in every way. It also dries harder so it's more wear resistant. This is important since you are painting something with moving parts. They even make products which enable the paint to be ran through an airbrush. Citadel paint is not good for gunpla and never will be. It's one of the worse water based options. I do not think you paint gunpla.

>>23666106
I just spray a bit of the cleaner out and it takes care of the needle. I wouldn't ever want to regularly remove the nozzle with how fragile the threads on the things are.
>>

All the armor for the Axis Kshatriya is painted and mounted to the frame. I went with an olive green and a more earthy dark green both in a satin finish. The muted colors seem to tone down the surface detail somewhat, but we'll see for sure once it's reassembled. I will say if you're building this kit and plan on painting it, even slight overspray on the mounting pegs and tabs is enough to bind it up. I thought I was being careful when I was painting, but this kit has extremely tight tolerances, in line with the tightest kits I've worked on. I ended up spending a couple hours removing paint from tabs and some more time making sure nothing was rubbing through the kit's articulations. Considering basically every part on this thing moves, it's nuts that I only made a single alteration to the knees to avoid any marring.

One of my local used game stores is trying to diversify into gunpla. I went in a few months ago, and they mostly had slop. Like 5 RG Zeta's, a bunch of extremely common HG's, and no MG's at all.
Went in yesterday and it was like an entirely new store. 2 PG 00 Raisers, PG Perfect Strike, PG Red Astray, 2 Mega Size Unicorns, Mega Size Green Zaku, MG Hi Nu Ver ka, a full set of the Wing EW MG's, a ton of harder to find RG's, a few of the amplified Digimon kits, uncommon HG's like Baund Doc, and the craziest thing I've seen in a physical store. The HG Xi and Penelope diorama box set for $199. That was actually really tempting.

>>
>>23666207
not really? not for any real purposes. the only thing that's affecting your paint is external forces, they're only acting on the outermost layer. friction etc from moving joints will wear down everything eventually that it makes contact with, but it starts with the outermost layer.

The Gunpla of Theseus:
If you take a Gunpla kit and gradually replace every part of it one by one until nothing of the original kit remains, should the result be considered modding the original kit, or a full scratchbuild?

USAGS tends to grossly overestimate their capacity to honor pre-orders, but at least they have sales fairly regularly.
Newtype's prices tend to be pretty shit and are only really worth buying from during a sale, which are few and far inbetween.
Never shopped at Gundam Planet, but just a quick look at their catalog that shit also looks overpriced.
>>
>>23666261
I've bought from all three at some point as well as a few others. I'm most familiar with gundamplanet, but I haven't bought from their in a few years now. most gunpla I buy is either at a local store or P-Bandai now.
In my opinion there's no major difference but gundamplanet gave me a couple freebies here and there so that's cool. An anon used to, maybe still does, work for them too.

I know one was green. 009 after wikitrawling.
I don't know if the "typical Huckebein scheme" Huckebein has a name associated for it or whatever though. I like the original scheme but if I'm putting all three together, which I am, I'd rather have them look the same.

The navy color is how it was originally envisioned by Katoki
The developers are the ones who made it the light blue, idk if it was just an issue with visibility in the debut game or what but its been navy ever since

It wouldn't surprise me if we get a modernized variant. This mold is very much the original Huckebein with bigger shoulders/knees/some slight differences. Easy variant to change out some armour bits and recolour it for the Hucky scheme and the green 009.

Absolutely no idea, wish I knew. But it was more gradual process, rather than single event. You could say it was even worse at one point, especially when bunch of faggots tried to "police" thread, mostly by attacking any plastic girls kits.
>>
>>23666491
/m/ lost its dedicated janitor and the board is too niche to have any moderators with a personal interest, so they don't delete crossboarding shitposts that don't fit into the board. Especially with several bored shitposters on VPNs who decided their hobby was to make the thread and board worse.

As a result it became extremely difficult to steer the general back on track if it goes off-course, leaving us in the state we're in now.

Why can't CIA be janitors since they're monitoring every board anyway?

If you want to just brush paint, citadel is fine. But if you want to airbrush, you should probably get Vallejo or AK.

GW/Warhammer stores only sell Citadel/GW products, so they're always going to recommend their own stuff.
I honestly don't think there's anything wrong with that, they aren't trying to trick you or anything. If you go into a Toyota dealership, you shouldn't be surprised when they try to sell you a Camry, it's their job.

The Zeus Silhouette bootleg is out of stock in most places I think, you could probably find it on Ali but it might take some doing to ensure it's actually the right one. Worst case, you buy an official Bandai kit for Destiny Spec II and use the Destiny for kitbashing fodder.

Delpi's website sells the Akatsuki hip joints, so you could buy it and the three sets of waterslides in one go. Bonus points in that you can buy waterslides for your other RG kits and if the total exceeds $80 USD you get free shipping.

The hip joints are the biggest problem, but not the only ones, unfortunately. It reuses the RG Strike's arms, hips and legs, and the biggest complaint is that the weak hip joints make it bad to pose, both aerially on an action base and when standing on the ground with the huge backpack. The replacement hip joints fix that problem, but the rest of it might still feel like an older RG kit.

== ACE CUSTOM GROUPBUILD ==

Build, customize, and paint a grunt mobile suit up for use by an ace pilot.
>You are taking the role of the Ace Pilot here - You're making the design choices when it comes to loadout, paint scheme, and suit customizations.
>Think about what your Ace specializes in, is he all in on offensive power, speed and maneuverability, or bulk and defense?
>While your pilot is an ace, he's not so special that he's getting super secret prototypes like Gundams or Mobile Armors. Keep your grunt relatively grounded to whatever setting it's from.

Is there a brain-dead, always-works, never-fail tutorial on how to properly mask a piece prior to airbrushing it to avoid the paint leaking underneath the tape and ruining your paint job? Because the first time I tried it, I kept getting leakage and had to correct via hand painting. I don't know if I just didn't secure the tape enough prior to airbrushing, or if my paint is the wrong consistency, or whatever. It would be nice if I didn't repeatedly fuck up my groupbuild entry because I somehow lack critical knowledge.

They look cool. What kind of retarded question is this? Theres no explanation or combination of words thats going to magically make you like something. You GTM haters are so stupid it's not even fun to argue with you, it feels like I'm talking to a little kid.
>>
Im confused - this time you don't need to take "grunt" suit to customize? I mean, TECHNICALLY, every single 30MM model could count as "grunt".

>>23667305
Are you sure you didn't apply too much paint? Masking tape, once gently pressed at edges with toothpick or something similar, should cover quite nice, only times where I had any leaks was when I used brush and very diluted paint.
>>
>>23666707
>lamest and most generic
you mean the easiest and most flexible?
we just had a difficult groupbuild theme, it's far easier to come up with ideas for something as broad as "ace".
>>
>>23667326
I put on about the same thickness of coat as I normally do, which is enough to cover the piece but definitely not enough to orange peel it. I guess maybe I should try to press down harder on the tape prior to painting, but I thought I already did before.
>>
I'm not going to buy another Bandai kit until they start including waterslides with their kits
So tired of having to import 3rd party decals from Korea or China or some shit every time I buy a kit
>>
>>23667335
The waterslides they already do include with Ver. Ka and some P-Bandai kits already do come from China. They're also utter dogshit and that's why people buy Korean instead.
>>

>it feels like I'm talking to a little kid.
You're in a general for people who are obsessed over plastic robots from cartoons.
>>
>>23667139
>Build Fighters
It could be argued how it got to ace status but a beargguy would count. I only suggested zaku/gm girl as a suggestion for the magical girl people but there is lots of stuff that can fit this theme. Armored core has some grunt kits, a custom weapon load out and a fancy paint job make it an ace. Just spewing some ideas for people who say the theme is inspired.

Mascot Anon here, the mascot for Savage Wolf is done. I have made some modification to her design to make her feel more cuter.
I will be moving on to the next mascot soon.

https://files.catbox.moe/2eleur.png

Now that groupbuild dude has post the theme for the next group build, I have decided that it would be a better time to open my mascot request now. I will be accepting 3 color request, any participant from biomecha may request me to make mascot for their build. First position is reserved for Biomechanical Santa. The remaining two will receive their slot of first come first serves basis. Please post the picture of your build not posted by group build dude(WIP is fine) and a creature you want to request.

I once saw a video about a technique that involved spraying in the same color as the base to let that seep into any gaps in the tape, and then spraying the intended color. Clear sounds a lot easier, thanks for the tip.

I am super, super, super tempted, but I don't need a fourth 1/144 Destiny Gundam, even for kitbashing purposes, and my Chinesium Zeus Silhouette is simply being held hostage by USAGS pre-order. I probably won't even have the shelf space for two Zeus Silhouettes...

>>
Does something like Char's Zaku count as an Ace Custom?
>>

Char's Zaku is literally an ace custom
>>
>>23667595
Not only is it an ace custom, it's the original.
>>
>>23667517
Whichever design you like more. They're both excellent kits.

>>23667557
The general idea is, it's a mass-produced mecha that rank-and-file pilots have access to, but thanks to the extra pull of being an ace it can be tuned up to be more powerful than usual. However, the ace pilot is not assigned to an entirely new mecha that is a prototype or cutting edge or whatever.
>>
>>23667517
PG Exia is much more "modern" in its engineering including the routing for the LED wiring and looks nicer out of the box plus it comes with a ton of accessories, if you like both equally I'd suggest the Exia
Not that PG Unicorn is bad by any means but it's a complete brick and wants more extra work to really shine

>>
>>23668746
You're probably better off getting the glass ones that are more compact. Nail files (especially those made out of metal) tend to be pretty coarse, the glass ones that are advertised for model kits won't scratch up your kit since they're very high grit. I bought a generic Chinesium set off of Amazon and they work fine, if you want the brand name stuff (Gunprimer, Dspiae, etc.) with the holes that work no matter the direction you file they're more expensive but some people really swear by them.

I wouldn't. There's not much sense clearcoating the parts of the shield before assembly since it doesn't have any articulation.
>>
>>23668983
Snip the penis tips and do a fitting test, so you know which surfaces will fit against each other and thus you don't need to paint. Then go ahead and mask those surfaces so you have less to worry about.

Thats a lot of work for a zaku shield. The fit on those two parts isn't so tight that a layer of paint and primer would stop them from fitting.

He is coming along. Pretty happy with the detail of this guy. First RE/100 I've built. Might have to get Celica's suit to go with the F91 I'm planning to get too soon now.

Also I know people were complaining that the blue parade shoes were empty in parts of the bottom, but I think it makes sense as they are big rubber shoes put on like tank road tracks. I think it works, but w/e they are probably coming off if this guy gets an AB eventually.

>>23669208
I've really gotten into late UC. A rewatch of F91 led to me re-reading and catching up on Crossbone and nearly finishing a Victory rewatch. The Victories are still my favorite late UC designs, but there is so much good stuff F91 and later.

And done with assembly. Overall pretty happy with it, but it could use some more arm articulation. The rifle isn't too hard to pose, but the beam shield constantly hits the shoulder. Not sure how many poses you can do with it. Might keep this one as a standing pose, but probably going to drop the parade shoes.

And here is it next to some MGs. Included the Zeta Ver Ka as it's probably more common than the other two. Also it's amazing how much better beam shields have started looking over the years. The Crossbone's is nearly the same as the Victory's.
Also WTB another run of V-Dashes. I want to make a normal Hexa done better than this old guy, and paint one like the Second Shrike Teams from Ghost.

Like the other anon said, the metal files work but will be more coarse (think 300 grit). See if the place has nano glass files, should be in nail buffering section, they’re rectangular and have small holes. I paid $10 for a 8-pack and they work great, just be mindful of using light pressure and not digging the hard edges into the piece

How are glass files compared to sanding sponges? I've been using 400/800/1200 grit sponges but my asshole cat likes to chew on them.

Oh wait, apparently there was an option part for the chest being gray. Red > Green Emblem and Gray > Red.
Also not sure why they did this, but they included 2 beam saber hilts, 2 beam sabers, and 2 spots in the skirt to mount them, but then tell you 1 saber and blade are extra parts and aren't used.

Just bought an MG Full Armor Unicorn. Even with all of the problems I've heard about it, that was still the 1/100 Unicorn I wanted the most. All of the extra weapons contributing to the silhouette outweigh the better build of the MGEX, especially because I don't care about LED's. It's also a third of the price, so that helps.

Yes, I need to make a pilgrimage sometime next year.

It's a good kit. It's a bit exhausting to build all of the weapons. There's just so much equipment.
Also, keep tabs on which shield parts are which. The extras are slightly different than the one on the base runner and don't fit together right with its parts.

Watch the depth for where you want to show it. This is near the minimum you can pull off. Also the metal frame doesn't really help with the weight of all the addon weapons, although they actually stay attached pretty well for me. My only issue is the beam magnum magazine is way looser than my old non-FA one.

The best part of a glass file is not having to grab different grits and that took my sanding time from 1min a nub down to 15secs. Caveat is the polished surface after but it’s not too noticeable and topcoat or 2000 grit fixes it anyways. That said, sandpaper or sponges still have a place on curved or tight spaces where the file can’t fit or work as well. You can clean the dust buildup with some masking tape or toothbrush

It's a little more work, but installing rare earth magnets into the feet and posing the suit on a metal surface gives a "heavy foot" without much extra weight. You can pull off some gravity defying poses that way.

Welp, those are definitely Enhanced ZZ parts on the shoulder, beam saber, backpack and feet, and the double beam rifle is definitely the ZZ's and not the FAZZ's. So in all likelihood it really is just a full kitbash of all the existing ZZ kits. Only question is, are they going to address the Enhanced ZZ no longer being able to transform, or the FAZZ forearm assembly not being compatible with the ZZ wing shields? It'd be nice if the kit could go from fully transformable Enhanced ZZ into taking off the wing shields and attaching all the armor pieces with zero parts-forming. But I also kind of expect them to take the lazy route, and third-party aftermarket kits needing to be bought if you want to do the whole thing properly.

Not my pla, but how do I deal with mold lines on rubber tubing? I tried sanding these once the regular way, and it just tore the rubber to shreds and I'm pretty sure no amount of surfacer can cover that.

the transformation isnt actually removed, with ZZ, there's a latch that connects to the leg booster so the whole core bottom fighter is stable and doesnt wobble.

with Enhanced ZZ, the leg part gains a new leg booster so the backpack latch cant connect to the leg, but essentially, the Enhanced ZZ can still transform, the backpack will just rest on the legs instead of being connected with the latch on the backpack
