-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:

-= ACE CUSTOM GROUPBUILD =-

Build, customize, and paint a grunt mobile suit up for use by an ace pilot.
>You are taking the role of the Ace Pilot here - You're making the design choices when it comes to loadout, paint scheme, and suit customizations.
>Think about what your Ace specializes in, is he all in on offensive power, speed and maneuverability, or bulk and defense?
>While your pilot is an ace, he's not so special that he's getting super secret prototypes like Gundams or Mobile Armors. Keep your grunt relatively grounded to whatever setting it's from.

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

This is going to be like my second or third attempt at joining a groupbuild. Hopefully it's not going to peter out partway through thanks to decision paralysis and overthinking various engineering solutions to stupidly overcomplicated ideas. Just a bunch of painting, a little kitbashing, and pretty much zero scratchbuilding. Though attempts will likely be made for casting, because fuck using up those weapon kits only once.

I want to try Kotobukiya megaman kits, and I want to achieve this sort of lifeless LED effect for his eyes.
Can I achieve this with just paints? IIRC there are paints that glow under UV, but maybe some clear resin might also create the layered look.

it's good stuff. Just be really anal about cleaning your brushes or airbrush afterwards. It doesn't take much to contaminate other paints with the stuff. It'll be invisible until you hit it with a blacklight and see where it's been contaminated.

I'm kind of new to the hobby but I've been a really big fan of the full mechanics kits since they're a bit bigger with bigger parts. I also recently got the HG psycho 2 which was really big.

are the mega size kits worth it if I'm big into this sort of style? I also saw there was some chinese company making a 1/60 Z'gok. and the HG destroy gundam looks cool too.
>>
does it really mater much what mr hobby top coat I git or is there a noticeable difference between the types they sell?
>>
>>23684737
Yeah if you want big parts and big model, mega size is what you want. Any PG is about the size of the Psyco Mark II but several times more intricate, by the way.

You'd probably really like to look into 3D printed models as well, there are a lot of scaleable designs out there and many designed from the start to be 1/60th.

Day two of gooch week. Yesterday I knocked over four kits.

Yesterday I started off with a 1/60 electronic style injection molding machine which I picked up from Gundam Base Tokyo a while back. After that I built two Balls that needed an irresponsible amount of glue, moved on to a Draken E in Riah configuration, and finished the day with an HG Guntank because ending on a little guy felt correct.

Vibes are high going into the second day, with an M9 Gernsback as the first box to be opened.

If you're sitting there "planning" instead of building, this is your sign.

Pick a kit, post progress, and suffer with me. Or keep hoarding boxes and cope. Your move.

The Gundam Base Chicago is kind of a let down. They don't have some of the exclusives I wanted like the crystalized MG Unicorn or the gold God Gundam with the funny base. No 1/100 Unicorn hanger either. Even newer retail stuff like the MG Vidar and HG Psycho Gundam weren't there. No decals either. I'll go back when the Gcucks Hambrabi comes out and hope they get some other stuff like the cutting mats restocked then. I did like the paintable ESFS soldier kits though, I wonder if they are in scale with the puchi mobile suits like the Draken.

bro, making the model kit look good is part of the deal you accept when you buy plastic that's still on the runners. If you want something that doesn't look like "garbage" without any effort then buy a statue.

>If you want something that doesn't look like "garbage" without any effort then buy a statue
A model is a collaborative effort between the designers and sculptors who shape it, and you who assemble and paint it. Of course you're free to modify them however you please, but there is an expectation that the model should at least have the correct shape when assembled, or else the company producing it failed to fulfill their responsibility.

No, just a skill issue on my end. On the right half of that pic, I didn't pull that part down make it slide smoothly in place. It was something I had to be slow and careful with, but maybe you'll have a better time than me for it. The core fighter for it is really well engineered.

Day three of gooch week. Yesterday I built less than I wanted to, but two kits still counts as progress.

Built an M9 Gernsback from Full Metal Panic and a Leo-R. The Gernsback was a bit fiddly but still a fun build. I am left with a hunger for more FMP kits. It's a shame the Arbalest is so hard to find.

Both kits left me with an absurd number of spare parts. I'm now sitting on enough leftovers that I could probably assemble half a stock Leo just from the spares pile. I've decided to keep track of the spares by carefully placing them into my big box of unsorted parts and shaking it about a bit just to ensure I can never find them all again.

Grab a kit, build something, and post it. Gooch week doesn’t care about your excuses. Also, I might set aside some time later to put together my collage of yearly builds for the compilation.

i really liked it, pretty decent color separation so it doesn't need that much masking outside of the vents on the skirt armor and the sensors on the torso iirc. the panel lines are a bit shallow so it benefits from rescribing, and the fitment is relatively tight so it'll need some adjustment in places especially if you're going to paint it.

you need a really bright, or light color for it's base, otherwise it'd look like complete shit. ie avoid gray or black base.

Pink makes yellow more warm, it's what I prefer to use as a basecoat. You can use white but it'll potentially look more green compared to pink, if you use gray or black it'll look even more green, desaturated, and shit. You can also apply the same approach to red's and orange's.

Worst thing was getting back to finishing touches after WEEK of being too sick to even move out of bed and having to remove all the dust that accumulated back then. And still got a lot of it during varnishing. Bummer.

Finished the painting and did a bit of assembly before noticing that the white (did last) was taking on faint fingerprints so it wasn't dry yet.
The blue/green color came out greener than I aimed for and also is the only color that orange peeled. I'm assuming I just had it a bit too thick, as I can't remember if I added more thinner after adding more blue to fix it.
Don't think he is going to make it for the collage, which is sad since going from restarting the hobby as a snapshitter earlier this year, to usually panel lining, decaling, and clear coating was a nice journey. Only full painted 2 kits before this MG.

Wing and G MS are literal midgets. Not Victory small, but they're the only ones in the size category between OYW and Late UC. That makes their RG kits smaller than anything besides Crossbone (which also cheats due to the engineering challenges involved). To my knowledge the Wing RG kits don't make any compromises (though some of the proportions do get exaggerated for stylistic purposes), so they aren't that bad to build.
>>
How are Koto kits compared to Bandai HG/RG kits?
>>
>>23687219
I thought that the RG Epyon was fine. Transformation works, nothing feels like it would snap if you touched in wrong. It's taller than it's supposed to be though.

fellas i need some pointers. i painted a z'gok on christmas and my paint was just chipping all over the place and not even topcoat saved it. how do I make the paint more durable? im using dspiae's paint that they made for their wash free air brush, same top coat and primer too. did I mess up my primer? it felt oddly smooth and not gritty as it did when I was painting my armored core stuff with the same primer which did not chip, though the actual plastic is resin. what can I do?

Wing is abit skinnier compares to your average UC robot, so yes, the kits do feel small. They are hypothetically 18m tall est based on the model's height instead of the in-universe 16m tall, but the bodily volume is quite lacking.

Day four of gooch week. Day three ended up being a decent haul, but I feel like I could have done more. Built an HG G-Saviour, Entry Grade Wing, and Nobel Gundam.

The Nobel genuinely impressed me. It’s the first time I’ve seen stickers that actually blended in and didn’t look immediately obvious.

The G-Saviour was a fun build but pretty rickety, and it definitely shows its age. Still, I liked it enough that I’m keeping an eye out for more, since I want to build an I-Saviour at some point.

The Entry Grade Wing was quick and surprisingly detailed for what it is. Very straightforward, very satisfying.

Even the most cringe of paint sippers could be building their backlog this week. Take a break from fondling your mixing balls, acrylicucks. Your pile of shame throbs with the need for attention.

Not a wing fan, but I'm curious on why this kit is popular. Is the HG one inferior?
>>
>>23687642
It's surprisingly good quality for an EG. I would say it's better than a lot of HG's.

I think people like it because it's cheap, good quality, looks nice, and Wing has been getting glazed hard lately due to the anniversary.

Probably because the beam saber (singular) was stored in the shield, which had a fancy deployment gimmick to access the saber's hilt. And for a budget model kit meant for absolute beginners, giving the shield that kind of gimmick just wasn't in the cards.

More progress. Overall, did an ok job on the painting, but I have found some white pieces that have it being uneven. I should have done two full coats for the white pieces, I assumed I didn't since it was white on white. Something to improve on next time.
>>
>>23688207
What kind of paint did you use for the blue?
>>
>>23688208
C80 + C64 + C1. C80 was a sub since I couldn't find C65 anywhere and it looked close. I went too much C64 though.
Re looking at the ratio in the manual, I think I did 60/30/10 instead of 60/10/30.
>>
>>23688212
When you start subbing out paint you're gonna need to just change the ratios. A lot of them look the same but the way they play with other paints is way different.
A bit of retarder would have helped too. It's magic for a level paintjob.
>>
>>23688207
Bro, your blue and red came out awful. The hell did you do?
>>
>>23688215
Yeah I figured. I did go and reduce the white since the C80 was brighter than the C64 already, but I used way too much green. Still, I don't hate the color which is why I went ahead with spraying it.
Also for the retader, I was using MLT, but iirc the blue was the last color for the batch. It then got moved closer to the heater to be closer to 70F to dry, but that might have accelerated it from the airflow. Painting in winter kinda sucks.

>>23688216

>>
>>23688207
its still an interesting color scheme, i actually like the idea of doing a custom color, the blotched red on the hip is terrible tho

it feels like you could have done some more detailing. i see a seamline on the arm, it would have looked better had you either covered it or turned it into a set of details

how long did it took you to do this

>>
>>23688221
The coolest shit ever when I was 16 was seed. The coolest shit ever when I was in middle school was wing.
>>
>>23688237
I'm assuming by blotched hip thing you mean the center bit. Like I said in another post it's part finger print and lighting. It should look better after some wiping + matt coating that I'm going to do after the decals.
The arm doesn't have a seam line actually outside of the articulation for rotation, I'm not used to cleaning mold lines unless they are super obvious, and didn't realize the paint made them stand out so much more. Will do more prep next time.
I clipped / removed nubs for the parts in 2 ~2 hr sections over a couple days. The painting was done in two ~3hr batches over 2 days also. I'm pretty slow at swapping colors, so it was everything colored one day, and white the second.

Also for a painting question that I just remembered. I had to use spray cans for some of the primer as I can't find non-black mr Surfacer in stock. I had issues where there would be "bubbles" in the primer layer after drying and where I noticed them I had to sand them smooth (the feet are purposely out of focus as they were pretty bad about it). Any idea the particular cause of this? I haven't had this issue with my airbrushed black primer at all (so I don't think it is dust), and I went with quick moving sprays with the cans.

I hate pegless hands. This rifle is flopping all over the place. Also kinda sad how much detail the white part covered up. I did a trick I saw on a Warhammer channel where I lightly sanded the grey paint, to make the high areas all be of the lighter gray primer. Essentially doing a reverse panel line. But now you can only see a bit of it in the handles.
>>
>>23688254
Ok, I post that then when playing with it slightly more it perfectly locks into place. Also found that the F runner had two crotch jewel pieces for some reason, and the second had a much better finish so I swapped it out.
>>

Was a fun year. Got back into the hobby after almost a decade off, and went from a snapper who trimmed nubs only with a hobby knife, to someone who actually cleans them via sanding, applies decals, and clear coats. Even managed to get in 2 painted kits (as the F91 isn't going to make it).
The FM Aerial turned out very dark due to me using gray primer and then basically ruined by me trying to matte coat it when it was far too humid out. The HG Wing Zero was a fun experiment with metalics and actually trying some masking (that was done badly). Slowly getting better though.
Goal for next year is to do a Crossbone 2nd Shrike Team colored Victory if that restock list is accurate about the MG.

it's the pinnacle machine of UC, it is the V gundam but with a cool V on its chest and beam wings, and it is just in general a more standout design than the V. I love the V don't get me wrong, but V2 undeniably stands out more as a design. And V2AB is still one of the best put together "FA" or upgrade packages of any design honestly.

Get the master grades
>>
>>23688455
I just live with it. It's a plastic toy, it doesn't need to be perfect. Until some Chinese bootlegging company manages to shrink the V2 down to its "correct" size, I will continue to not care.

>>23688458
Those are the Master Grades.
>>
>>23688455
>>23688458
Those are the MGs I'm pretty sure. I cope by just having the V2 flying over the V in my display so you can't notice as easily. Also the extra half inch does make the V2 more solid and slightly more posable.
After building the HG V2AB I now want a non transforming MG version of each though.
>>
>>23688455
gotta be honest I barely see the difference here, looks like a cm at most
>>
>>23688432
>Those space marine toys
Ngl they look cool. Can they be taken apart easily enough so you can repaint them?
>>
>>23688294
It is very fun to build
>>
>>23688093
Melee weapons on a mech will always be cooler than ranged weapons.
>>
>>23688479
I guess? never really bothered to take one of them apart but the joints of the limbs seem easy enough to take apart
>>
>>23688455
It's acceptable, I mean at least it's not like the Chang Jedah that is an entire head taller than it was supposed to be
>>
She's completed. I already adore her.
Any thoughts on the colors? I tried to hide as many gundam colors as possible on her. The hair is just zeta blue.

Scalefags should be brought back to the cellar and shot to the head.

I can't decide bros.
PG strike freedom or PG exia?
I've built the PG perfect strike so far but that's my only PG kit
>>
The real grade sazabi is the most overrated piece of shit ive ever built

>>23688649
Exia
>>
>>23688652
the mg ver ka moggs it.
>>
>>23688656
Yeah, and more importantly the ver ka doesn't have pieces flying off when you try to pose it. Despite being bigger and heavier it also seems to have better balance on an action base, I can't stop the rg from leaning to the right for some reason. Can't believe I was tricked into building this shit when I already had the master grade
>>
>>23688649
Exia. the PG Strike Freedom is Katokified. it is ugly skinny design
>>
can you actually not use the spn-120 on the sprue

>the PG Strike Freedom is Katokified
why does everybody say this like it's a bad thing?
>>
>>23688665
Honestly my problem with the PG SF is that it just looks like a really big high grade. The mgex moggs it in every way at half the price
>>
>>23688669
there are some things that Katoki isn't good at, Strike Freedom is one, and Exia is the other. I ean just look at his Exia ver Ka
>>
>>23688687
it looks kino
>>
can you put the mg v gundam in gerwalk mode like in the show?
>>
>>23688679
>>23688665
I hadn't really noticed before but the lack of detail on some of those sections is borderline criminal for a PG, comparing it to the strike PG is night and day
>>
>>23688714
i think it's meant for you to put the work in yourself.

>costs around 50 bucks

Shit with the amount of stuff you get this is cheap.
>>
>>23688900
Do you guys remember when hgs were like 14 bucks and 20 bucks was considered an expensive high grade? It seems like we just skipped the upper 20, 30, and 40 dollar price range and just skipped straight to 50 dollar high grades. Fucking insane, shit is like $2 worth of plastic I know bandai is making fat stacks off these
>>
>>23688905
Yeah shut the fuck up boomer this is all your fault and you know it.
>>
>>23688900
Pretty sure it's going to cost at least $60-65 because of tariffs. Even the Sandrock Custom and Heavyarms Custom didn't cost any less than $50 apiece and their extra add-ons weren't nearly as fancy.

>>23688905
Sir, that's an MG.
>>
>>23688900
Couldn't even give the little gay kid two uzis. At best he'll shoot his missiles, put the grunts in a stun animation before another character harvests the kills.
>>
>>23688944
stun animations only exist in video games. one missile is enough to kill if the writer and/or director says so
>>
>>23688962
Explosions don't leave a corpse which means character will miraculously survive and show up in later episodes.
