-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:

-= ACE CUSTOM GROUPBUILD =-

Build, customize, and paint a grunt mobile suit up for use by an ace pilot.
>You are taking the role of the Ace Pilot here - You're making the design choices when it comes to loadout, paint scheme, and suit customizations.
>Think about what your Ace specializes in, is he all in on offensive power, speed and maneuverability, or bulk and defense?
>While your pilot is an ace, he's not so special that he's getting super secret prototypes like Gundams or Mobile Armors. Keep your grunt relatively grounded to whatever setting it's from.

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

Trying out that candy coat thingy.
God damn the Nightingale is yuuuge. I mean, I've long known it's a big kit but actually getting a hold of the box and building it is another thing. Between this one and Sazabi, Char seems to be compensating for something.

I have not built a single kit I brought last year.
Zero kits.
Not even test fitted.
I haven't even open the box that some of them came in.
One time I would just open an amazon box with no idea what's inside and be surprised its gunpla.
I just keep doom scrolling my online stores and keep going "this would look great in *insert important moment in the shows* let me buy a couple of kits"
And the kits just keep piling up.
I lie to myself and say "It doesn't matter if I brought 5 zaku ii, I can just production line and build them all at the same time in just one sitting"
But it scares me.
Feels me with dread.
I try not to touch my cellphone anymore, but my thumb just goes straight for the online stores even if I just want to jack off or watch youtube in the shitter.

So we're all in agreement that this thing is going to be hot trash, right?

Not only are they probably going to charge an arm and a leg for the thing, but it's also not even going to look anything remotely like the original design, meaning you can't even pose it alongside your HG Dendrobium. And they're probably even going to give it the complimentary Cancer Coating just like they did their "Nightingale." Are people actually going to buy this thing just to spite Bandai? This thing never even struck me as popular to begin with, it gets a few minutes of screentime and then dies like a bitch, it would be like if people were demanding a kit for the Vagan Gear from AGE or some shit.

>FM 1/100 Aerial Rebuild
Not super likely, the Full Mechanics line is super dead, I would bet on an MG Aerial Rebuild happening within a decade before a FM ever happening.

>RG Hyaku Shiki
Also not super likely, at least with the gold coating. Akatsuki is already losing Bandai a good chunk of money. Maybe we'll see a HG-esque yellow plastic release with full undergates, and a gold coating as a P-Bandai release.

>HG GQuuuuuuX Sazabi
That thing only appeared in a single still, it's highly unlikely.

I've decided. This will be the year I start painting.
Everything's been ordered, hopefully it won't be as expensive going forward now that the initial costs are out of the way.
>>
>>23692276
The initial cost is always the painful part, but usually there's also a bunch of stuff you still have to order in a second wave once you realize that you're missing several critical things.

I'll only start painting once I'm fully financially independent, hopefully in 5 years.

Took me about maybe 10 hours for the entire process, it's incredibly satisfying to turn sheets of plastic into a cool ass robot. The most relaxing part for me was actually the stickers and panel lining, I found great joy in applying them with my hobby knife and watching the kits design become more complex in my hands. I did fuck up by spray painting the gold parts, which caused them to become thicker and have trouble snapping into their place, I actually broke one of the gold calf inner detail parts because of it and the transforming feature doesn't work right now. I also hit it with one set of matte top coat last night, and a small one this morning although I still don't know how much is too much, I fear I went overboard. I also did not sticker the back, I just didn't feel like it.

Figure out what your topcoat is made of. If it's Mr color, get a cotton swab covered in isopropyl alcohol and rub the chest gem. It will remove the top coat and make it shiny.
Also since you like the stickers, look into water decals for your next kit. They are the same design, but you can see their edges far less and look more painted on (especially with a top coat).
Next time you paint, try to avoid the joints/pegs. If parts won't connect due to getting some on, just sand it. It's a peg so it's not going to be seen so the sanding doesn't have to be perfect.

You would have to be super super precise with the cutting, because anything less than perfect and it's going to look off and ugly.

The real answer is to find an online service to print the decals for you, because they have specialized printers that can do it. It's just going to be super expensive, like $10 USD for a single sheet.

Well, the clear coat actually fixed all the orange peel on the blue, but thus Kaleido stuff pools a bit more than Mr Color and my high grit sandpaper isn't making any progress really. Still better than the before though.
>>
>>23693000
Yeah I'm trying to search for a service but I'm not getting any definite answers on what place can do it, if it comes down to printing with outlines on white waterslide decal paper then so be it, I did read an online tutorial for this situation and the way they did it was to do the most grey print close to white as possible but it will still use black ink but will come out like off white which is fine by me, I don't need it 100% autistically accurate given the circumstances of these decals not being in print anymore. Trying to preserve these decals, it's gunpla history.

...So much disinformation is bring posted...

I make homemade decals on clear decal paper. Some tips:
- Space out the designs, and repeat the designs at least three times. You will have a high failure rate with application.
- Decal paper is usually 8.5 by 11 inches. Use up all the paper for one print. you won't be able to print on the leftovers later.
- It's up to you to cut the design out as close to the image as possible, as the decal paper you're printing on is really one giant clear decal.
- Color copier's toner is not fully opaque. It will always be transparent. You made need to overlap the decal with the same design to bring out the colors over dark paint.
- White toner exists, but finding a copier that prints with it is challenging.
- Avoid white decal paper. It's a full field of white. Those "Z"s you printed would have to be cut out exactly, unless you surround the "Z" with a color that matches the background on the model.

Good luck!

And one last one of the Crossbone. I technically built this guy as the Full Cloth, but he's a pre action base MG so he kinda just has to stand there if I put the full cloth on. So I'm going to just leave it off. Bought the FC only because I wasn't planning on decal bombing him and also the cartoonier skulls.
>>
>>23693069

>>
>>23693077
You can just put him on the generic attachment point. The P-Bandai Crossbones actually all come with a unique action base connector that connects to the centerpoint of the backpack though, I wish they'd update the original kits with that piece.
>>
>>23693084
You have to use the U connectors and I really dislike those. Also he lost weapon privileges anyway and lightly setting him on the shelf made him drop both. These are the worst peg hands I've ever seen. For that picture it took me 10 minutes to get both in the hands at the same time.
>>
>>23693090
Yeah, the MG Crossbones are probably the worst kits in existence in terms of holding their weapons. Their joints will weaken pretty quickly too holding them. Some of the PB ones update some of the frame to KPS which helps though.
I'd like to see a 2.0, they could be made much better.

Anyway, I need a break from UC for a little bit. Probably going to build the Freedom 2.0 next.

Further Tip:
I used a laser color copier for my decals, which melts the plastic toner onto the decal paper.
If you are printing these using an ink jet printer, mist the final print with some clear coat (gloss or matte is up to you.) The ink will be poorly absorbed by the decal paper and could come off with application.

>>23693178
Hmmm I see, I don't have the waterslide paper just yet, I am still looking into services online and so far I've found that Samuel Decal and another place called FalloutHobbies does custom decals as well, I'm considering doing them myself as a last resort but keeping the option open by making sure I can do a decent job printing them and testing different lighter shades as an alternative to white. For now I'm going to keep recreating the rest of the decals and stickers for my 1.0 kits in photoshop. Thanks for the help, appreciate it alot!
>>
The 00 RG kits are so strange. I don't know if it's something specifically about the plastic but the details are so soft compared to the MGs. I know they're only 10 years old but I can't imagine how much better they would look with modern RG production.

>>
>>23693840
i can't tell based on the image but if it's resin, plastic cement will not work and you will need to use superglue/CA glue
you can sand them but resin dust is very dangerous and you should be wearing a mask or work in a very well ventilated area if you don't want cancer
>>
>>23693840
It's resin so you're going to need to be really careful with it. Resin dust is really toxic and if you get it in your eyes you could go blind. You should only wet sand it. I personally just use super glue for bonding it. It also feels horrible to work with in every way you could compare it to plastic.

Ok that is really scary. Good thing I checked instead of just going trial and error. Don't warhammer fans use resin all the time? I never heard of it being that dangerous. So I take it eye need eye protection, but even then there is probably risk of it getting on my sweat and dripping down my brows after I take my covers off. Yeah, wet sanding it is then. I never knew things could get this dangerous for hobby stuff

dude wet sanding
>>
>>23693863
He's fucking with you. Cured resin is amorphous like most common plastics. It's about as bad for you as any plastic dust. It's only dangerous if it's not cured fully, but
>As discussed earlier, epoxy resins are currently the most commonly used resins in the advanced composite industry. The basic epoxy molecule is a reaction product of epichlorohydrin (ECH) and bisphenol-A (BPA). Some epoxies contain trace amounts of residual ECH typically in the range of <1 to 10 ppm (by weight). Industrial hygiene air monitoring for ECH has been done in a number of workplaces, involving a variety of epoxy resin end uses. Most of the monitoring has shown no detectable levels of ECH in the air. Uncured epoxy resins can present a significant dermal exposure hazard. In many workplaces, manual processing results in potential skin exposure. This can result in skin irritation, rashes and, subsequently, dermatitis if contact is prolonged. Sensitization to the resins can also develop and may require a change of work assignment.

If you're doing any serious amount of sanding, for anything, you should still at least wear a N95 rated mask. A real one, not the cheap chinese shit

You put a small amount of dye powder into resin and then mix it. So long as you mix it enough/properly and give it time to cure it will be clear. This guy has a bunch of videos working with epoxy but I think this might be the best one to demonstrate how clear it becomes after working with it properly.

It's a Plamor ritual, shed blood in front of a kit you're working on to gain Plamor's approval and to gain creative insight to mog the competition. Many GBWC entries have dabbled in Plamor rituals in order to win, why this anon is doing such a thing for a silly group build among a handful of anons is beyond me, it's way too excessive, like bombing a corpse to make sure they're dead dead, or chugging a 2L bottle of water to quench your thirst.

unconventionial, but what would you do for bandaged parts details on a kit? I was thinking thin strips of putty, wrapping around, and then sanding it down even more afterwards. It's for an eva build
>>
>>23694652
at what scale? at 25mm or larger, thin masking tape with PVA glue brushed on can work if you aren't confident in your putty skills, for smaller scales you might need tissue paper or thinner materials and even putty would be exceedingly difficult.

Making a flat part like that antenna out of plasticard is fairly easy, just measure, sketch, and cut. All you need to do after that is shape it with some sandpaper.

I have never built a Gundam or a model like one. I just want to say that was a fucking delight. Like a true American, I bought the Japanese product that said "FREEDOM" on the box. This guy is the first one I have ever built. Being the first one I've ever built, I broke the v-fin. I only know it's called a v-fin because I googled 'What glue to use to fix a broken Gundam antenna' and google politely corrected me. Anyway, I inserted it at the wrong angle four times and when I was starting to gently wiggle it back out it conveniently came back out in two pieces. Also it's covered in poorly clipped nubs and the files I was using were way too fierce so it is covered in so many scuffs that I'm tempted to buy panel liner just to highlight the scuffs and call them battle damage. When I was busy posing the completed figure my finger caught the yellow v-fin, popped it free, and sent the red accent on it flying across the room. I've been walking around barefoot for about half an hour now and still haven't found it. That was so much god damn fun that I can see why people that build Gundams chose to build Gundams instead of going out and having sex. 10/10, will be buying way too many more models. I don't even like Gundams all that much. Hopefully that Zoids one that I hesitated pulling the trigger on goes together as well as this one did because I'm going back to my local game store to buy it tomorrow. After that I'll be on the hunt for more weird robots, tanks, and Japanese'd military hardware models. Hopefully figuring out which companies/series are good or not isn't too painful of an adventure. I'm not really going anywhere with this. I'm just rambling. That was sweet. Happy New Year, guys. If any of you spot that little red triangle, let me know.

Finished one the other day. Build wasn't bad, only three complaints from me. The hands are shit, can't hold the beam rifle, regardless if you have them connected or not. I tucked the rifle's stock up against the chest and that helps hold it in place. I'd recommend buying third party hands or something for a better grip. I might try throwing some sticky tacky onto the rifle grips and see if that helps. I've seen some say to use magnets, though I've no idea where you could even find some that small, maybe a quick google search? The second gripe of mine was the flimsy head fit, more specifically the face plate/chin/eye pieces are loose. Not sure why, I took the whole head apart a few times and couldn't figure it out. Could be a kit issue or some bad luck on my end with a stroke survivor kit? Last is the fucking rubber feathers. I fucking hate them. I fucking hate them to the point that I WAS going to buy the Zero PG as the first PG I'd get. That's not fucking happening thanks to the rubber feathers. Fuck those things. Don't bend them after you paint them. Other than that, it's not a terrible kit. I couldn't find any water decals for it, so I threw the stickers on it and figured that the usual sticker peeling off issue wouldn't happen because of the coat of paint sprayed on them. Nah, it's still happening.

Why the fuck were you using semi gloss as a top coat lmfao. Did you want it to look like bare plastic?

Haropla is great

>>23695857
Yeah because I used it just for the decals. I didn't know different top coat would make it look so different.

Gonna get this and replace the exposed Endymion Unit with a shot of Amuro's visor.

Right next to the desk I had a trash can thst I should have bagged up and thrown out last week. When I knocked the yellow v-fin off it popped off in the direction of that trash can. I spent the tail end of my night carefully picking out every taco wrapper, unfolding it and shaking it out. Got to the very bottom of the trash can. No red triangle. I asked my dog what I'm going to do and she looked off to the side and at the 3D printer. I do have red filament. Also I fed the dog because her food is stored off to the side of where the 3D printer sits and that was what she actually looked at. Next step is crawling around the desk with a flashlight and if that fails it's time to learn CAD and just make one.

Yessir. I saw a bunch of little emery boards of varying grit right next to the files I picked up. One of those packs is coming home with me once I go get a robot wolf.

>>23695157
Ah! Thanks for the heads up. I would have got like 4 more models, took a group picture, then been humiliated that all of them still have the safety flags on. I don't think I saw anything about that in the instructions. Good to know. Thanks a million. A Zoid is next on the list. I saw one I liked at the game store, but it was a little pricey and I wasn't sure if I was going to be into building models like these. Now it looks dirt cheap for what I get. Guess I should pick up glue while I'm there. Past that, who knows? I'm not so hot on Gundam but I love robots and weird sci-fi military nonsense. I hope the Zoids models are worth it. When I started driving a friend would come over in the morning before we wouldn't go to school. We watched Zoids because it was on. We even named my first car Zeke so I have a soft spot for them.

Speaking of which, anyone know what brands to look out for or do I just search for "plasmo" and hope what I find aren't garbage? Is there some infamous brand to avoid due to low quality or something?

it's also very tempting to try and fit one of the visor parts onto the zaku helmet that came with the kit. I think with just a little bit of sanding it should fit without too much gap

I don't understand why anyone is swayed on buying a model kit due to watching a show, or not, or the events that happen within it. It's as simple as, do I like the design = buy. Never watched Gqux, never will, bought the Police Zaku & Gelgoog.
>>
>>23695964
I am into this hobby because I want to paint the robot toys from the shows that I like and not random designs that I have no attachment to. If I bought a seed kit I would be deathly afraid of someone misunderstanding and assuming that I like it
>>
>>23695964
I personally dont buy the kit if I despise the character.
>>
>>23695972
Same. Rustal and Gjallarhorn in general RUINED their designs for me. I refuse to buy a Graze because of it
>>
>>23695964
Because the stories make us want to have mementos of the things we liked. It reminds people of it. I feel spiritually connected to Char Aznable so I will buy anything they make red.
>>
>>23695981
I’m the same way but with Kira Jesus. Will buy every strike and freedom variant they shit out.

If it's robots you want, check out Hexa Gears from Kotobukiya. They're a mix of robots and dudes in power armor and the line is designed to make it easy to swap parts around.

Literally counter productive. My hand is steady, my mood is calm, my mind is clear, I'm far more patient with my snips, sand paper, or brush, I've had a cigarette, my fingers are too sticky to drop small parts. Time to model. Might even pop off mid-project for a quick rub.

I want CHUNKY armor and BIG GUN(S) and I'm lukewarm in Gundam. There are 8 million IPs and manufactures and I know all the fun is in digging through the cluster fuck and finding your own gems but someone tell me there is some keyword that I can slam in searches that gives me CHUNKY armor panels and BIG GUN(S)
>>
>>23696352
Hexa Gear may scratch that itch. The real chunky ones are few and far between but there might be something there you like.

I just finished painting a comission of an anime girl (sorry no pics), it was pretty hot, and I couldn't keep myself from hot gluing it. I know ISP will damage lacquer paint and topcoat so I wont try that. But how exactly do you tracelessly clean semen off matte without damaging it?
