-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.

-= ACE CUSTOM GROUPBUILD =-

Build, customize, and paint a grunt mobile suit up for use by an ace pilot.
>You are taking the role of the Ace Pilot here - You're making the design choices when it comes to loadout, paint scheme, and suit customizations.
>Think about what your Ace specializes in, is he all in on offensive power, speed and maneuverability, or bulk and defense?
>While your pilot is an ace, he's not so special that he's getting super secret prototypes like Gundams or Mobile Armors. Keep your grunt relatively grounded to whatever setting it's from.

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

What you have to understand about Gunpla and colorpla is that they get non-hobbyists to buy kits. The kind that usually collects regular figurines or an anime fan that just wants a figure of their favorite MS and is willing to buy some tools for the cheaper price of a model kit compared to a pre-assembled figure. Without that appeal Gunpla would be much smaller and Bandai would be making less kits overall in proportion to the lower demand.

If you're new, you're better off just getting some entry grade. Bootlegs tend to be lacking in terms of QC. Sure if you're lucky you get the good runs with no issues. But those with things like fitting issue do exist. Not an issue for seasoned builders who already have the tools and know how to fix them. But if you're just starting to get into the hobby, you might end up hating it instead.

Get bandai entry grades, it's literally called that for a reason. If you're trying to experiment/ practice then yeah go get bootlets.
>>
>>23703303

>>

who?

>FA ZZ
Full Armor Double Zeta.

>FAZZ
Refers to a different MS based on the Full Armor Double Zeta. You read the abbreviation as is, "fazz". Its spelled in kana in japanese too ファッツ (Fattsu). I propose we call it Fattso for differentiation.

it would be funny, but we already know it's coming with it. it'd also be the first time they ever released a figure or kit of it without it, so it'll never happen
>>
>>23703312
No? The cannon never showed up in ZZ or early ZZ kits.
>>
>>23703309
Full Armor ZZ with cannon is definitely a retcon. Akitaka didn't design it with a cannon and Tomino didn't ask for that thing to exist either.
>>
>>23703315
>>23703316
It showed up in the 1/100 ZZ kit manual and then in a custom bit of art for FA ZZ in a magazine before Sentinel existed, here's Mika Akitaka himself talking about it.

FAZZ is the prototype testbed (notgundam) that got clobbered by the MK V because it sucked dick in melee. it was a 3v1 and they still got wrecked.
>>
FAZZ and FA ZZ are the same fucking thing, like 99.9% the same aside from the color scheme.
just like how Dom and Rick Dom are fucking same.
They are "different" so B*ndai can sell you the same fucking thing twice.
fucking retards
>>
>>23703315
It is abit convoluted. Akitaka was working on Sentinel in 1986-1987. He designed the cannon for the G Fortress upgrade plan as a concept art and Model Graphix scratch built the thing. Model Graphix asked something like "how does this work for ZZ Gundam in its MS mode?" And resulted the idea of FA ZZ having that cannon. It was originally a fanfiction on Model Graphix until everyone decided to push it into the continuity of UC, resulting Sentinel's FAZZ, a prototype for FA ZZ to prove that the thing does have a cannon. Akitaka drew an artwork of Full Armor ZZ with the cannon for NewType april issue in 1987 to promote the idea.
>>
>>23703318
The thing is, Akitaka didn't design it for the anime. It is a retcon no matter what.

it's not a retcon, it's just something that wasn't used in the anime. it's as much a retcon as any MSV released while a show is airing. which is to say it's not very retroactive at all

Bandai selling recolors is hardly a thing worth getting mad about, FAZZ was general retail too.
What *is* worth getting mad about is that they're the same price but FAZZ is incomplete whereas FA ZZ is still a fully functional (enhanced) ZZ underneath with all the bells and whistles. FAZZ can't even put on the wing shields without mods, they don't fit.
>>
>>23703485
Yes, it won't frost because of the low humidity, but it will run weirdly as it will dry super slow. Mr color lacquer wants a 60-80F range.

Is there something I'm missing about the Dijeh?
I like most of the designs from Zeta, but it just looks like a fishman version of a Gelgoog or Galbaldy, and it didn't get that much time to shine in the show.
Also is the HGUC Gabthley good? It's very ugly but cheap. It's either that or any of the 0083 grunts.
>unique and cool designs for grunts
>but stained with the fact that it's from 0083

sorry for the retarded noob question here.
I got the MG vidar and MG Duel blitz.
I got some top coat and also some black matte tamiya color spray paint to paint some of the black parts on the kits. are there any considerations I need to make before spraying the pieces or what is the general order of operation for this? will this also work on some of the visible dark grey inner frame parts or would I need a layer before the paint?

>get recommended a video on the FAZZ
>recognize this part as one of the pieces that's supposed to be exclusive to the Enhanced ZZ kit
Oh shit, so the Q11 and Q12 pieces on the FAZZ are exactly the same as the J1 and J2 pieces on the Enhanced ZZ. They just made a new mold for it to keep it in the right color.

So, besides a couple of attachments on the backpack and a differently shaped back skirt, that's even more commonality for being able to build the MG Full Armor ZZ using the FAZZ and ZZ kits, without needing the Enhanced expansion pack.

I mean like how do I decide between all these sellers/stores? Their prices are really wide.
>>
>>23703987
just look at seller feedback. make sure it has a decent number of reviews and like 90% positive or something like that. nobody actually knows who tf these random bootleg stores are but if they are ripping people off they will get bad reviews. i've never had a problem ordering from the ones with good reviews. you can also look for the aliexpress "choice" sellers i think those are good. finally if you are burger make sure it says "includes import charges" in the price so you aren't surprised with a hundred dollar tariff tip.
>>
>>23703987
Pick whichever is cheapest and check the seller's rating, if it's above 4.5 you'll be fine
>>
>>23703988
>>23703989
Hmm, it seems like I can only find the orange on stores like that that either ship either months from now, or want $100 for shipping.

>>
>>23703987
check the reviews. some stores are good, some are bad and others are straight up actual scammers who will never mail your product and hope that you dont complain and ask for your money back. make sure you actually read the reviews too because some people are retarded and give a 1 star review because the box has a tiny scratch or whatever
>>
>>23703991
usually when a new kit comes out everyone who got it early will scalp the price. it'll go down once everyone else gets theirs

Generic automotive spray paint I found from my local hardware store. It's meant to be for your typical honda accord/ civic type of red.

The Koto Steel Haze is pretty solid. I'm bumping this to priority number two for painting after the Meng Eva 01.

the gundam x/xx featured weapon is the satellite cannon is not even used a lot to show its cool to its audience. its a very low-mid mecha anime at best specially when the audience's taste on mecha is changing

X was a poorly concieved show from the ground up, the story is mid, the mecha designs are like leftovers from wing and mishmash of old uc designs, the action scenes are very poor specially to the standards of 90s mecha.

overall their quality is workable, you might need some sanding and trimming or gluing despite being snapfits. there's also a reason they're so cheap though so there's an entire ethical argument this isn't the place for and I won't bother you with.

Not like bandai can ever produce anything worthwhile after UC. I think I'll be perfectly content building GMs, Balls, Zakus, Doms and Gelgoogs. Sure, I'll kitbash a gorilla man here and there. Maybe 3d print some mobile armor and cruisers, but it'll be a good use of my hobby time.
>>
How are citadel paints for airbrushing? My friend gifted me some thinking I was doing W40k minis when I said my side hobby is modelling figures.
>>
>>23704285
Some hit the sweet spot where you need to make some fixes, but they aren't too challenging. Basically, if you have a Hank hill fixation to fixing things, you'll enjoy working with some of the chink bootlegs. High mobility Zaku ground type and Morrocan front GMs are a good example, very very mild imperfections that can be dealt with a little bit of knife and chisel work but its very satisfying to finish.
>>
>>23704295
Thin the shit out of them and they'll work fine
Pretty much the worst usable hobby paint though
>>
>>23704295
I haven't bought any of their new/current formulation. Their old formula was very thick, but with a bit of flow improver went through an airbrush fine. The paint pot design is complete shit though and the paints dry out very fast.

Well god damn it. There were 2 different kinds of sheets but I think both are rub on. Fug. I cant read japanese but there is no "how to" showing water decals. Just the rub-ons. I dunno why one backer sheet is white and the other blue but just tested a corner of them and the both seem to be rub-on.

Dry decals aren't that bad so long as the surface they're on is flat. Also only ver ka kits include water decals, everything else gets the stickers treatment. Thankfully there's many 3rd party decals being made. I like delpi decals the most but others are fine too

Thoughts on a gold V-fin on the Red Gundam?
I'm considering painting it in a more Sinanju/Sazabi-esque colour scheme (green eyes/sensors instead of the blue, gold accents instead of the yellow ones, black instead of dark grey on the torso), but I'm not sure whether to leave the V-fin red or to jazz it up a bit. I don't have a picture because I only thought of this just now, but imagine a red "jewel" with gold fins, like the Mk-II/Zeta/etc.

Snapping a Freedom 2.0 this weekend. The proportions feel way different than all the UC suits I've been building, but considering the last 5 kits I've all done were late UC it might be the cause?
The chest was neat in how they let it flex with the arms. But what the fuck is with these hips? They have like 8 parts and do less movement than the dropping hips w/lock piece style ones. Not surprised that people say you should get metal parts.

I mean really most of the mainlines in the 90s. Everything basically looked like an MSV variant or option parts of the nu with different gimmicks. There are tons.. f91, G, the wing suits, X, Seed, etc. They basically ground that design into the dirt for nearly 20 years until 00. Though with the recent designs these days I can see why they were afraid to stray too far from the formula.

>the average american earn AT LEAST $50k
And that's how statistics are used in a dangerous and disingenuous way. You've probably heard this, back in Ye Olden Times, the average life expectancy of people was 35 years. Does that mean there were no 50 year olds or making it to your 60s was incredibly rare? No. This average is swung so low because A LOT of people only made it to the ripe old age of "died at childbirth" and even more died of childhood illnesses. In those times, if you made it to about 8 or 9 years old odds are you'll see your 60s barring getting run over by a runaway ox. Living to your 60s was absolutely the norm in those days, but "average life expectancy" was only 35 because so many kids died. That's why people had like 8-10 kids, because only like 2 or 3 may actually see their teens.
"Average American makes 50k" doesn't mean most people make that much. Most people are below that, but it's swung high because of the few utterly filthy rich curves the average. The "average" in just about any system is typically the minority.

It's beyond their capability. Something so small and transformable would require hardware at least a generation better than what they have access to.

In the meantime, they need to get off their asses and make a Strike Freedom Type II conversion kit for the old 2006 MG. It can't be that hard.

People who have the old MG (which also got reprinted recently btw), or the RG, or even the MGEX, who want to make it look like the movie version and then also buy a third-party Proud Defender. Though frankly, it's very likely that Bandai is already designing a new MG Mighty Strike Freedom since it has been 20 years since the original MG Strike Freedom and not everybody has the money to throw around for the MGEX. Same is likely to happen with a RG version, just that people don't want to wait for it.

Technically speaking, like the Force Impulse and Destiny it's just the original that got brought back to the shop and repaired and upgraded after it got fucked up.

For some reason all the seed slops look the same to me. I thought the og strike freedom was just the freedom again and the infinite justice was just the justice again. I’ve never felt like that about other gundam shows except for the bolinoak sammahn which I thought was another palace athene and all the gms which all look the same to me.

Not who you are originally replying to. Seed is the bad of wing on steroids. in this case, you can see the differences but they're basically recolored character DLC tier, presumably the purpose is to get people to triple and quadruple dip on the same robot.

Are glass files really all that? I don't really think I'll do much in the way of painting yet. Just a clear coat. I would really like to make nubs and injection marks/swirls go away. Do I just need to go at it with a glass file? I'm down to 1k grit sand paper but you can still tell I gave that area a lot of work and I'm hoping a top coat will basically make it disappear so I'm less afraid to go nuts with the sandpaper. Do I just want a buffing cloth if I want to bring back a little sheen to the naked plastic?

Your taxes also go into your universal health care. Here in the US, if you catch an illness and/or get injured and/or get cancer or other long-term condition, you're pretty much out of fucking luck if you aren't already on a really good health plan that doesn't try to kick you to the curb to avoid paying out. Hope you enjoy being dead or financially destitute.

It's overall just fine but not exceptional aside from the GM III just being cool and it coming with everything except the alternate missile pods, but perhaps most importantly is one of john bandai's chosen kits with perfect hands so it's extremely fucking based. Would recommend.

Glass files are equivalent to like 2k grit except you can start using them from where you would start with 200 grit.

>>
>>23705596
Glass files are pretty nice, even the crappy $5 Chinesium ones you can find on Amazon. After cutting a piece off the runner I usually cut the nub down a bit more with a hobby knife and then finish it off with the glass file. No need to switch grits, just go at it with the glass file until it's flush with the surface (the file will stop working it in because now it's struggling against the entire surface of the piece). The trade-off is that the file will get coated with plastic dust really quickly, so you have to clean it off every few nubs (which for me usually involves taking a small bit of masking tape and sticking the file with it until it's clean). There may be better ways though, someone on /toy/ recommended cleaning gels if you don't want to waste shit.

Animated frames thats why. When the suits are in the hangar and not moving, they look good and well detailed.

SEED designs are meant to be visually busy, and even with the early computer animation they couldn't render them at full detail for movement.

you're going to end up with something that looks shiny, but has lots of deep scratches if you went straight glass filing a 200 grit-sanded surface.

I wetsand by dipping the glass file into a cup of water, then clean up by placing a paper towel over the sink and gradually pour it out. The plastic dust gunk should stay on the towel while the water drains through, and chuck the towel away. Though, you can just skip everything and directly dump your plastic dust water too
>>
>>23705658
It comes with a good bit of accessories with just the missile pods it has and the shoulder missiles, you can strip those off and still have just a GM underneath if you want to do something else with it.
The Build Fighters variant comes with even more crap if you can get it, but it's in a pretty garish color.
>>
>>23705658
>But it's just a white GM (why is the original kit SO blue) with legs that can now move forward?
Not true, it has a cooler backpack, torso, and vents in the legs.

Speaking of legs, it also doesn't have that big ugly seam down the middle of the legs that all those other GM kits do.

The Beam Master? It... yeah... it's very garish, as you said.
I do like the colours of the GM II or Jegan I'll admit, the GM III seems to be in an unhappy middle where it's not as clean as the GM II, but not quite sufficiently green like the Nemo or Jegan
>>23705665
Ok, having what appears to be a camera on its back is a bit cooler than the Mk II backpack I'll admit. The torsos seem similar though, like standard AEUG torsos. I don't know what you mean by the seam, it looks like it has a similar leg as the original GM
>standard AEUG torsos
Also why the fuck do the Mk II and Zeta have so much trouble rotating their heads? I sanded a bit of the collar and head for the Mk II, but it looks like I'd have to sand a straight up millimeter worth of collar for the Zeta to turn its head properly.

>I don't know what you mean by the seam, it looks like it has a similar leg as the original GM
The legs of the original GM and like almost every other GM variant are built by two halves that come together at the middle. With the GM II, they started splitting it into more pieces so the front is one solid piece that covers the other parts coming together. The HGGTO GM does the same thing.

That's the Euryale, it's based on random weirdo comic successor to the Alex, it and some GM IIIs wearing Full Armour Gundam equipment show up. A fun callback since the GM III can really pretty much use anything the OG Gundam could. Some GM IIIs were originally GMs, since each iteration had some batches that were converted from one to the next alongside new units. GM III is a cool guy.

Hm. I kinda want the rocket tips red then maybe drop in a little panel liner. Are those gundam markers like full on paint pens that will give me nice solid color? I don't want to go nuts with paint but a few details that are quick and easy like that would be great. I just know nothing about thoae markers. The only ones I've messed with is the panel liner ones but there are a bunch of others that I have no idea what they are for.

>Nagano doesn't design mecha that make sense in reality.
Nagano was the first mecha designer to actually think about how mecha could work in reality instead of just making the robot magically bend and stretch in animation
The joint designs in probably every single Gunpla you own all trace back to L-Gaim
>>
>>23705749
Did you sand it? Like did you actually sand it? Maybe thin the paint a little? Is it beading up
>>
>>23705741
gundam markers arent self leveling unlike the chink paint markers (like dspiae/etc)
if your local store/closest online seller has them go get a set of dspiae in the colors you want to do all the hand touchups for your kits
i use their gunmetal metallic marker for some inner frame detailing
>>
>>23705749
What paint are you using, did you prime it?
>>
>>23705756
I'm a total beginner to hand painting so I'm really just learning how to thin. I'm using Vallejo stonewall white but when I got some out of the bottle I noticed it was really runny, I tested it on my skin and only thinned it a tiny bit. It's a 1/144 vfin so the part is miniscule but the paint is basically pulling together on the face of the part and pulling away from the convex edges. I'll try sanding more thoroughly I guess.
