Why not just use a translator app on your phone? I recently played through Mono-Eye Gundams like that and it worked out pretty well. Just keep a notepad open to record information that you'll frequently reference and resign yourself to mentally translating horrible name attempts.

Because translations + typesetting/timing subs is a lot of work to do just to have it be already done by someone else or perceived to be imminently done by them. Sometimes doing a chapter or two is enough to get a scanslation group to get off their ass and actually get back to doing a series though. Especially if their website has some monetization where they incentivize you to give them money, like paying for "early" access to chapters. If you can read those chapters elsewhere why would you pay them? So the monetary incentives there can get people to do stuff. But on the flip side if you constantly snipe other groups expect others to do the same to you. Which doesn't do shit to people who are actually doing it for the love of the series and not donation begging, lol.

I got comfortable enough that I've been playing some of the portable games in japanese
Of course, mostly of the old ones that aren't nearly as complex, and it does help that some have script translations as a bit of a crutch when I'm interested in the story
I recently beat R with that text LP as help, I'm currently playing through 2G. It does help that I already played the Nes 2, so I already know the basics of what is going on
When I get more confident in my reading, I will step up to the more complex games

It's the origin of a lot of popular OG stuff, a good series list featuring a lot of them that just don't get used anymore, and the sequence of games as a whole does a pretty good job of intermingling series' plots together and giving character dynamics to crossover relationships

It was the first SRW game to have actual moving sprites and animations. Every game before it had completely static sprites and all attacks were depicted as primitive effects like you'd see in a Digimon v-pet battle. Alpha blew boomers minds for this alone when they saw it, of course this was also on top of it being one of the first games with voice acting (though not the first)

Alpha was also insanely ambitious, like remember this game lets you chose which protagonist you want from a selection of 8 (eight) characters and then lets you choose the love interest of that character from the four characters of the opposite sex, having a fanfic route where Hikaru falls for Minmei, having all possible units even where it doesn't make fucking sense like giving you the White Base for one mission one route only or being able to use the the Mazinger pilders and Banjo's car (and yet oddly skimping on giving the player the Eltreum which I'm guessing they were afraid of having a battleship even bigger than the SDF-1)

That's another thing. It was back when making units was relatively effortless because no HD and elaborate animations so literally anything was a unit even if it was something that was totally useless like defusing a combiner or weak units that were replaced a few stages down the line like the stuff Noriko uses before getting Gunbuster or the Wing boys having their tv units and tv upgrade units despite them all getting replaced by the EW ones at the end, and you barely get to use them. Wing Zero tv litterally only in your roster with Zechs for one stage before he fucks off and then it becomes WZC by the time Heero returns and you get it permanently.

Compared to the modern era of half the roster having to be post story because they can't afford to model anything but the final protagonist unit (if there's an upgrade) and one enemy unit if you are lucky and Alpha did not skimp on anything. They've literally said remaking Alpha on modern hardware is literally impossible unless they dumbed the visuals down severely because doing everything Alpha had in HD is beyond their time and budget

I found this site that coverd most of the dialogue script in japaness. Not every route is covered but it should be enough to get through the game and actually understand what's going on without having to use a real time translator while playing.
