-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.

Just want to add some missing colors
The pieces are ABS plastic which only taks lacquer paint
Can't actual handpaint with lacquer because any screwups can't be removed with thinner because lacquer thinner will damage the plastic

What am I supposed to do?

I can try enamel paint, but with how glossy the abs plastic surface is, the paint doesn't really stay on the surface. They just thin out in the center and pool on the edges.

How do I solve this?
Matt coated the pieces? Don't thin the paint?

>Water based

I got some Vallejo
Same problem.

I only use them when I am doing a full paint job which the surface is more or less matted from the base color so the paint doesn't really flow around.

The issue is the enamel/acrylic paint just doesn't stay put on high glossy surface.

>Prime it
I am painting on bare plastic. Priming it just add more headache with the color. And I don't where I can get clear color primer.

Ok. Here is my thought.
So the reason that hand brush paint don't stick around it because there is nothing for the paint to grip. To solve this people use a primer or even sand the plastic before any paint application.

So in theory, if I do a clear matt finish on the plastic. The now matted surface you allow the paint to stick better. Right?

I am trying to paint the orange stripes on her skirt.

Alclad aqua gloss is very good as a clear primer. The bottle even says you can use it as primer. I've used mr.super clear matte as primer for brush painting before and it works great too.
Brushing paint onto bare plastic will never go well. You absolutely need some sort of primer layer under it.
>>
>proving my point about shitcrylics
lol
>>
>>23854434
You are making it so hard for yourself, my dude. Painting on bare plastic is just silly, Wich savages besides some hipster miniature painters even do that? Get some brush primer if you only want to do certain spots.
>>
>>23854434
>doesn't stay put on a high glossy surface
Yeah, no shit. Literally no paint will, dummy. If the surface is smooth, what is supposed to keep the solvent in place when wet, and what is the pigment supposed to hold onto when dry?

You either need a primer, etcher, or to scuff the surface. This is painting 101 and applies to literally everything form your house to your girlfriend's nails.

>clear primer
You just get a primer that won't bleed through your paint or be a problem to cover. White, gray, or black. It's that easy. For those stripes, I'd paint a stripe of gray primer, and then cover with the orange of your choice.

>If I do a clear matte
Congratulations, you've found a shitty primer that isn't really good as a primer, but can kind of do the job. Top coats aren't set up to bind well to plastic below or hold onto paint above. It can do it, but an actual primer will do it better. Also, are you going to matte coat the entire model, or just have the skirt pieces in a different finish from the rest?
>>
>>23854452
>>23854434
Seconding, MiG and AK clear varnishes serves as primers as well. But I would personally stick to Mr Hobby.

Good time to post this since it's a Hyaku Shiki thread.
I'm debating whether to get the MG Strike Rogue Otori and the Dragon Momoko/Dadao Akatsuki or the RG Akatsuki and wait for a HG Otori.
On one hand, the 1/100 option ends up about as expensive since the RG Akatsuki is darn pricey and I also like the look of the DM bootleg more. Especially if HG Otori ends up p-bandai. And it could easily be a decade away anyway.
On the other hand 1/144 would take up A LOT A LOT A LOT less space.
Hrmmm. Decisions, decisions. Why do I even post this here anyway? Mystery. Maybe someone will have good insights? Or at least someone can get angry at me instead of a person that doesn't deserve abuse.

I have seen that in some older kits (flashing, mold lines and some issues fitment). I wonder if that is why the MG Freedom 2.0 has that issue with the hip joint. That, or it is just a material issue for that specific part.
>>
>>23855027
No, the freedom just is designed in a way where it's easy to stress the hip connection if you aren't careful. It can get at weird angles and if you try to move the leg without taking that into account that's when it snaps. Conversely if you keep the peg straight when you move the leg it probably won't be an issue. It's a design flaw.

Yes. The PG nu is prone to having the hip joint break off because it's designed in a similar way. If you are careful it might be fine, but it's easy to stress and snap if you aren't.

any kitbashing tips on how to make the Windam less shit without wrecking its design aesthetic (i.e. those leg thrusters)? I'm thinking of using the HG GM III legs, but my unyielding for hatred for Gundam SEED as a continuity is getting the best of me
>>

because the Windam's design is just shy of being good and the kit is also just shy of being good

I think past a certain point, they just want to flex how much details they can do. Like yeah, the designs are very busy and overly complex, but it's sort of the 'point' where they want to show how complex they can be with their paint job/ masking etc. Actual creative build/ design is an entirely different skillset.

out of box it really just looks like they had the idea of how it looked like opened and worked backwards from that. it's a pretty easy mod though. the parts that come off when the nu gundam is undergoing a psychoframe transformation just need the peg on the back snipped and then it can be glued to the part above it. the middle part separation is a pretty straightforward to cut out and glue to the upper thigh side part instead

/gpg/ has had this conversation so many times and every time, it seems like the conclusion is some kind of mystery black box where it just werks for some people and somehow it just doesn't for some. Lacquer works on ABS, however you first need to bring the gunpla parts to a shrine for a purification ceremony to wash off the youkai that spews miasma on your gunpla. After that, make sure to enshrine your airbrush so it deters the gunpla yokai from haunting your gunpla in the future.

Finished snapping the Icarus. I didn't attach the rifle since the damn thing is too heavy and breaks apart the hands as well as the joint drooping, causing it all to fall.
Bandai couldn't be bothered to give the updated waist part from the TR-1 Hazenthlay just for a little bit of stability or more hand option parts.

Ended up just adding those GBF MKII weapons on and the Advanced Hazel sensor and high heels to somewhat look close to the Byarlant.

Unlikely. Journalists love the drama but when some sane one asked actual expert, he replied "Absolutely not. I'll just give you one number, the infectiousness rate: COVID is almost 20, while hantavirus around 2. This is the key difference, meaning one sick person can infect at most two healthy people". There you have it.

This is the same issue with the MP1 and MP2 hands. The design of the mold doesn’t have the lifespan to be reprinted so many times and reused in so many different kits. They even re made the mold in 2022 for those hands and the prints from those suck already.

The black plastic they use for the innerframe has really terrible durability. The shoulder pegs are the most vulnerable. The engineering is decent and the kit feels sturdy, but the joint is some ecopla trash they decided to dump into this poor thing.
And feel free to paint it, it has enough accessories to be converted into the standard Zaku warrior.

I'll see how it goes. I'd prefer not having to use a 'proper' airbrush system because I don't really have the space for indoor aribrushing and lugging a compressor outdoors doesn't seem that convenient. Salons presumably paints plenty of nails just fine. At worse I'll go back to spray cans and paintbrush.
>>
>>23856471
People only have 10-20 nails done at a time, and they are (usually) smaller than the average HG piece.
That said, work with what you got currently and upgrade when they break.
Also, a hobby air compressor is very 1 handable if you are taking it outside. Carrying your tree of parts on alligator clips would be harder relatively

I got a lot done this past weekend.
>>
>>23856683
Ask yourself this: How much time and effort do you think you're going to spend building the spray booth, how well do you think it'll compare to a Chinesium spray booth, and do you think it's worth all that grief and effort to save what probably amounts to fifty bucks?

Odds are, you might end up making some mistakes here and there that cause you to have to re-buy parts for your self-built spray booth, and ultimately end up with something that's pretty crappy. I know that I did that when I was trying to build myself a pressure pot for resin casting, and I ended up buying the Harbor Freight kit at the end anyways because there was one specific piece that kept failing that I didn't have a solution to. Sometimes, the extra money you spend is worth the peace of mind of knowing that it works as advertised.

It's ultimately your decision to make, and who knows you might be a hell of a lot better at building shit than me. But I'm just letting you know that when I went that route I ended up getting nothing but regret and a learning experience, and spending probably $50 more than I needed to.
