-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobilephotoresizer

Build a kit featuring any brand of Girlpla, including but not limited to:
>Frame Arms Girl
>Megami Device
>30 Minute Sisters/Missions/Etc.
>Figure-Rise Standard
>Megalomaria
Additionally, any "Feminine" mechs like the Nobel Gundam or Valsione are fair game as well. What you do with your build in terms of theming is up to you so long as your base is "Feminine".

granted, the Event Horizon's demonic possession does make it a living breathing entity (like a ship-sized Silent Hill), but not super fleshy like a Strogg dreadnought or the dolls Chucky implants his soul into. Greys, silvers and blacks would work? On top of that, the Gundam EX looks like if the RX-78-2 went to the same place the Event Horizon went to.

I had negative opinion on this whole AliExpress mania but after some talk with friendly owner of one of local shops, I'm even more against this. EU is right to introduce additional payments to curb this Chinese offensive. And everyone prising Chinese copies and buying legitimate kits here are literally murdering local businesses, that must deal with taxes, regulations and other stuff, including utilisation of plastic.

>>
>>23932679
So is gunpla. Gw sprue layout is just fucking inefficient as it is wasteful.
>>
>>23932668
GW is special case. Everyone else figured out how to do good quality molds and sprues but not them. They also try to squeeze as much of parts as possible into single sprue, which result in those weirdly placed parts. But they don't really have to since their clients will buy everything anyway.
>>
>>23932681
>>23932415
They're overpriced but they are good sculpts. Yeah sure you have cleanup to do with big nubs but it's not a big deal. They do have some very, very nice sculpts they just cost an absurd amount for a game that expects you to army build.
>>
>>23932415
Looks like a dread? Should be 60 bucks max (still too expensive).
>>
>>23932683
The weird part with GW is how they price kits on how much points they are worth in game rather than how much plastic they use. So you can have Commander Farsight aka alien Char (single model) costing more than squad of SM Terminators (5 models) which cost only slightly more than squad of Intercessors (10 models).

But yeah, their newest sculpts are noticeably better quality than old ones, at least in terms of mold lines.
>>
>>23932692
ehhh they do often line up to points and costs but the real rub is just that characters get retardo markup
Farsight is a lot better than some of the various named infantry characters where you pay 40 to 60 bucks for a dozen pieces at most
>>
>>23932692
>they price kits on how much points they are worth in game rather than how much plastic they use
Which is fucking stupid, because all it does is cause your plastic to be more expensive per unit weight than precious fucking metals. There's no good reason for anybody to do this, it doesn't help make the game more "fair," it just gatekeeps your game and pisses people off. And it's one of the biggest drivers for people buying 3D printers and just printing their own damn game pieces.
>>
>>23932697
it doesn't really matter, Games Workshop has been making a lot of money since Covid despite their prices ballooning into the stratosphere
That said everyone knows the prices are high and there are lots of ways to get deals on Warhammer shit, especially for the core of an army, if you wait for Battleforce boxes and stuff like that before even getting to the resell market
So glad I mostly played back in 7th when prices were comparatively sane

so anyway, I went to the Gundam Base pop up store in flipland, and it was disappointing shit, more so even compared to the Gundam Base pop up in London.

at least in London you get a lot of Gundam Base exclusives like the MG Zaku Cannon (Zeta ver) MG GM Sniper custom (Zeta ver), MG Catapult base. the GBase here in flipland only have pretty much HG clear color variants, and the only thing of note was the MG ReGZ GBase Fukouka and there were only 3 of them, so it was gone in the 1st day.

everything else was just taken from the warehouse of the only allowed distributor of gundam in flipland. so the only difference of the GBase and other stores is that the GBase carries clear color kits.

I guess in the end, its ok, since there's alot of Gelgoog and no one is buying it

actually, it was kinda low-key allowed back then. before 2015, Bandai didnt check if it was bootleg or not.

until a fliptard bragged to Meijin (Kawaguchi) on facebook that he bought a bootleg 1/144 Kshatriya only for quarter of the price and got into 3rd place in the GBWC.

Kawaguchi expressed his disappointment, and basically just said, "please don't call it gunpla", ever since then, flipland needs a receipt from Toy Kingdom for GBWC entries (later changed to Bankee sticker since Bankee became the official sole distributor of gunpla in flipland)

it actually amazes me, that the flips has audacity to insult Meijin like that

>and they only ship pbandai to the US for some insane reason. It's like they dont want my money.

These stores stay region-locked not only because they hate foreigners or some other shallow reasons. They also stay region-locked because of import policies and customs between countries are different.

I run a business in the US and I got just hit with this. Because I made one sales thats not even $200! to that province in canada I have to sacrifice time, money, and sanity to register for the tax collection system, collect their vat from customers, pay it to them, and then file quarter sales tax reports every 3 months until the end of time.

This isn't a one off thing, EVERY province in Canada has a system like this with basically an almost near zero threshold on the orders that can pass through before, so that's 40 different sales tax reports to a foreign country that need to be filed every year.

Now we can argue that bandai has the resources to handle this. But this just eats away at the operational bandwith and introduces extra risk with several extra foreign governent bodies hanging over them like a sword of Damocles.

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/taxes/sales-taxes/pst/register

"If any of the following apply to you, you may also be required to register:

You're located outside B.C. and you make sales to B.C. customers"

Premium Bandai kits will become even hard to obtain as mail forwarding services may make the decision to stop taking certain orders to ship to you to avoid this headache.

FACT, you are not safe!

FACT, non of us safe!
>>
>>23932793
I'm sure Bandai, a company that already sells thousands of products in Canada including gunpla, can work out how to sell premium gunpla in Canada.

>>
>>23932804
You misunderstand me, this isn't a matter of wanting to cheat out of import fees being paid entirely.

Import fees and duties were paid by the customer when the items reached the border.
The global trend is for US to have to register formally with each country and apparently provinces within the country to collect the fees, remit them to each country/province, and file sales tax reports every three months even if no sales took place in a region.

How long can you hold out against the mental attrition of having to take care of that paperwork every 3 months for every single country that you sell to, because that is the direction things are headed worldwide.
>>
>>23932815
>The global trend is for US to have to register formally with each country and apparently provinces within the country to collect the fees, remit them to each country/province, and file sales tax reports every three months even if no sales took place in a region.
Damn I wonder why the US specifically has trade barriers and red tape put up against them relatively recently by the civilized world at large haha.
>>
>>23932819
this would still be a thing in the other direction for the last couple of decades. wouldn't a canadian retailer shipping goods to the US have to register and deal with 50 different tax systems, one for each of the 50 US states?

The all caps US in my reply to specify shippers like the person i'm replying to, myself, and anyone else who sends products internationally. Not the USA.

This is not an America vs Europe thing or the world against America thing.
This is an observable trend of tightening regulation on importing on a global scale against everyone.

Across the world more and more countries are adopting policies that are either straight copies of what the UK did or policies that will eventually lead to the policy changes in 2021 that caused smaller businesses to completely abandon the UK Market.

Did a little bit of poking around aliexpress. Never ordered before so decided to test with the gold coating hyaku shiki and gm spartan. >>
>>23933265
I've ordered quite a few kits off of aliexpress. I think I've bought like....5 legit bandai kits in the past year but like 40 Aliexpress kits.

I've got the 1/35 RX, Daban PGU, both Fatcats, 1/100 hygogg upscale, 1/100 Shokew, Casval's HG (recolored G30th I think), clear RG 2.0 RX, HIRM WZC, the new Zerius, the Hi Nu vrabe amazing that was never made a kit, Doan Cucuruz Island's Zaku 1 (doan's) as well as that RX.

Tons of random stuff. It's badass. Nice little builds, decent build quality, minor fit issues solved by angle cutting pegs or sanding them or cutting peg slots down their length. I do some light rescribe, sometimes sharpen edges, paint details, sometimes repaint colors to versions i like better, just lots of very cheap fun casual builds.

Hathaway sure is a smooth criminal.
Also digging the Xi's design more now that I'm building this. They really haven't shown it that much in the movies.
Also I'm kinda annoyed at some of the movie 2 version. It didn't come with parts to my build the originals and the new ones together. I kinda get the shield part, but for the waist armor and it adding the mount mount I have no idea why it isn't available for the left side. Same with the new Gundam head, that would have been very cool to swap easily, and they had new runners of the right colors (besides the antenna I suppose).
I do like how the new head has color seperated eyes, but the rest of this kit is pretty sticker heavy for its size, and again the had parts of the right colors for most of them (I'm primarily talking about all the orange). Seems weirdly phoned in for a protagonist suit, although I guess it was a 2021 model.

I'm also really enjoying the hands and how big they are. The new hands with the little Jegan sized fingers is a cool addition and detail to allow kit bashing. It's going to be weird seeing the weapon there without the hand closed, but that's probably how it would have to work in universe anyway just to make sure the primary hand doesn't cover anything important.

Xi's a very well made kit overall and definitely looks great in real life compared to lineart where the depth of it gets lost. Same is true of Penelope too but honestly its model isn't as good as Xi's at all.

It's a big HG with a really complicated design on the particulars and I doubt they had particularly huge forecasts for sales for it. I mean, honestly, most people aren't that big on the HF machines. Even with the movie buff I don't think they were gonna put in more effort for just an HG just to get 100% colour accuracy.
Personally my biggest gripe with it is that the underside of the chest flaps are hollow. I'm not a big fan of the wrists attaching at an angle into the arms either but that's how the design is for this iteration so oh well.

I'm honestly not big on the Messer kit as it is right now. It's fine but everything they did with the torso is just a ton of work for nothing I give a shit about. It's fine, not awful or anything, but I definitely think it's on the finnickier side of things and not the best of current HGs. Gawman's looks really solid though, haven't gotten one yet unfortunately.

I think the new Gustav Karl kit is really good on the note of HF stuff, it's sturdy as can be and looks great. Shame it didn't come with a ReZEL rifle but the bazooka is nice.

Which is the worse and most useless gimmick?
Fully plated kits, clear kits, or transforming kits
>>
>>23933752
I have at least 6 kits that ive never transformed even though they have the gimmick, so thats my vote
>>
>>23933752
Tough choose between plated or transforming. Like the other guy said, I never transform them. However, plated kits typically aren't undergated properly so you have these awful nub marks all over.
>>
>>23933752
I can respect a good transforming gimmick especially in MG scale but I would still probably do without them for dedicated kits of either mode most of the time. Fully plated kits are the worst though, fuck them. Crazy price and most aren't designed for it so it's a total rip, and if you want to paint it it's an extra little step to get rid of the coating you paid a 50% markup for.
>>
>>23933752
I think plated ones are by far the worst, mostly because a majority of plated kits aren't really gated for it. And even if they are, undergating and such still requires proper cleaning to not cause fitting issues. It's just a really annoying deal all around.

Clear kits are kinda barf outside of mechanical clear. But, like anons have said before, if you're a paintfag they're an easy way to get kits that aren't printed as much normally, and I've seen some striking customs with clear parts mixed in.

I actually like transforming suits, especially as platforms for other suits, and outside of the victories I'd say of them hold together pretty well in MS mode with minimal joint tightening if you don't want to bother.

Almost done mg marasi with the resin conversion kit from galaxy hobby shop. Have to do an oil wash on the main body Then I'll finish the rifle that the resin kit comes with.

Never getting a galaxy hobby shop resin kit again. The resin was incredibly thin on the shin/calf area. I could bend it by lightly squeezing different ends of the piece. I had painted all the pieces and was going to for the final assembly. When I attempted to snap the kit into place my thumb went through the armor. Tried another piece on another leg other as gently as I could and the piece still managed to break in another area. I've done multiple resin kits before and this has never happened, even with a lower quality recast.

At that point, I went just went fuck it and got out my scribers and scribed the details on the resin kit on the original kits pieces.

Paint done on the GM sniper II. This was the second master grade kit I ever built. Glad to be able to put some paint on it. Decided to mute the colors a bit and do them all flat.
Overall, I am trying to do all my old kits in more simple styles without very obvious preshading or effects. It's making the projects only take around 10 hours each. That includes tightening all the joints and fixing my really shoddy old work. The paint is mostly just to cover work marks and filler.
This one was shockingly solid still, despite it being so old. Gonna panel line it tomorrow and buy some decals for it since it looks weird without them.

Clear kits by far. I can at least somewhat see the appeal of plated kits for stuff like Delta Gundam or the Akatsuki.
As for transformations, it depends on what kind of transformation. If it's just Wing-style of Gundams just laying on its back, then it's worthless. If it's actual transformation or gattai gimmick like Moderoids and Miniplas, then it's essential.

fully plated<clear<transformation

Transformation gimmicks, when done well, are a nice thing to have.
You can do some shenanigans with clear kits like using them as after images for the actual kit, paint the insides metallic, shove some DIY internal stuff in them, etc.
Fully plated/coated kits are a waste of time and money in most cases and either look like tacky bootleg shit you'd find in your local one-Dollar Asia-store or make you go "why did you even bother?!" like that one L-Gaim HG kit that had only the faintest pearl effect on the white parts.

This was easier than I thought though the forearm attachment is just a makeshift basic hold right now, the bicep works great but I need to clean up my sanding a little.

By the way turns out you can just put the Penelope/Odysseus's shoulder sockets in the new novel Penelope shoulder units, dimensions are the same for the inner socket piece within them. Means I don't need to do a shoulder joint replacement thankfully.
