Hey Anons I've been brainstorming this over for a few months but I'm curious on what you guys think of it?

This fandom has been around for nearly 14 years now and in that time tons of content has been produced. However , in that time some of this aforementioned content has been sadly lost to either the sands of time or been deleted by it's separate creators.

I am more than willing to comb through/archive a bunch of nostalgic content and instead of placing them into a digital archive like many others have done I'll instead place them onto discs. My main reason for this stems over the fact that digital media tends to be extremely unpredictable in the sense of corruption or just the owners shutting down their archive sites.

Yes you can argue that CD's corrupt as well I find the concept of providing people with the ability of playing all of their fondest memories from the fandom in their bedroom at any time like it's the 2000s/early 2010s all over again very fucking cool to think about.

I have already thought out my process of doing this as well and it goes as follows:

> Step 1. Archive all of the content that will be placed onto the discs and this can range from (Pony fan music , animations , games , memes etc etc).

> Step 2: Once all of the aforementioned content has been collected then I'll transfer them over to the discs where I will then proceed to mark them accordingly to the creator they belong to.

For example: All of the living tombstone pony songs would be on the "Tombstone Disc" and all of the JackTHerbert reaction videos would be on the "Jack disc" etc etc.

> Step 3: After all of the discs have been properly marked and are ready to go I'll place them into already pre purchased protective cases to reduce any kind of protentional damage/prevent them from getting lost easily.

> Step 4: Begin sending out copies for anyone who is interested in this idea .

This project is still in early days but I have already pitched this to a few close friends of mine inside of the fandom and they are onboard so I was wondering what you all think?

You can give any kind of thoughts whatsoever even if it's you just calling me a fag or something as all feedback is encouraged , and can even be focused around suggesting some personal recommendations on what content should be included on the discs.

I like your project idea. Use blu rays. They have better capacity and error correction than CDs and DVDs.

It would be really cool to get an actual master made and mass print discs but that's unrealistic.
>>
>>41029907
I have done my extensive research already and plan to use Blu ray exclusively since I'm far too familiar with corruption/errors

But thank you to you and the other 2 anons who were interested

Thanks fag <3

Out of curiosity, why discs over SD cards or usb storage?

absurdly based
although if i were u i would sell em so u can afford to mass produce them and get them out far and wide
only concern would be copyright shit but whatever
also how do you plan to do all this urself? its such an absurdly high amount of stuff assuming u even have the capacity to just "download" all of the derpibooru content with a button click, there's still tons of other websites let alone the fact you mentioned making individual discs for every fucking artist
why not just start out with bulking it all onto one disk like a music disk, an image disk and sort stuff into categories digitally within the disk like u would a USB stick with folders and subfolders if u can afford the labor?
>>
>>41029907
Better error correction? Can you elaborate a little if I may ask?
>>
I know an archive autist and he swears by optical media, so you're onto something OP. Someone already suggested using BluRay, that's a good idea, there may even be better optical media coming out, might be worth looking into, but a set of BluRays with an index/catalog might be the ticket for now. I wouldn't worry about making seperate discs, just make images and even share via torrent then anons can burn their own discs all over the world, bring them to cons to distribute. When the aliens dig up our decimated civilization they will find the Pony Fandom Archives and read the pony jar thread like the Epic of Gilgamesh
>>
>>41029841
Maybe look into tape drives
>>
can we put a pony on one of the discs
>>
Disks tend to rot over time. So >>41030368 right. It's better to just collect the content and distribute it via torrent.
>>
>>41030637
it takes a looong time for them to rot though, much better than storing on flash discs, etc according to that autist I mention, I haven't really looked into myself though
>>
>>41030637
Discs in the right conditions can last up to 100 - 200 years maximum plus I'll be making lots of copies anyway in the case something happens to them out of nowhere like random corruption or they get scratched
>>
>>41030091
That's true.

Like I said in the original post previously the project is still in the early days stage so things are not set in stone yet and can be changed at any point. As for your suggestion on making it one disc though I have given it some more thought and agree that's the plan moving forward because trying to make them all on separate discs is very time consuming.

Also I can by all means fund the labour as discs go for very cheap nowadays and I have been doing archiving shit for years now so it's nothing new to me.
>>
>>41030079
Discs give me that 2000s and early 2010s feel to them and it would be funny picturing anons going around to cons like MareFair with pony archive discs in their hands sharing them with other people.
>>
>>41029841
you'd want tapes for that, tech on them gotten good
>>
>>41031405
I'll look into it for sure thank you

As far as I know, tape readers are very expensive.

Optical discs all have error correction so they still work after they get scratched. If you're more familiar with QR codes those also use an error correction technique so a damaged one can still be read. It's similar.
The error correction has improved from CDs to DVDs and now blu rays.

>>41032770
I see. I was always under the impression that DVDs are better than BDs because of the location of the recording layer, though I might've been mistaken on that.
>>
>>41033266
Ok it's your turn to elaborate.
>>
>>41033445
The recording layer of CDs was problematic because it was located so closely to the surface (only the top coating protected it) so they sandwiched it between the top and the bottom for DVD. For BD, they moved it to the bottom (I forgot what the technical reason for this decision was), which theoretically makes it more susceptible to damage from that side, although they did add more protective layers to BD than there were on CD.

hi jade
this really sucks because my idea I replied to you about, that I've had for over a year now, is just going to look like a copycat version of yours. it's kinda funny how to a T similar it is.

> Step 5: Put instructions on how to read the CDs on the box in terms of hyperfine transition of hydrogen.
> Step 6: Place it in a safe place it can wait for thousands of years.
> Step 6: Wait
> Step 7: Pony is now one of the last surviving signs of human existence.

Archiving pony is one of the things you can definitely be a copycat about. More copies the better.

I've never been a big fan of the fandom, but I like physical media and love the idea of our fucked up little family here gaining a bit more permanence in the world. Sign me up.

We must stop the war on physical media! (and cash)

another reason hd-dvd should have won

Then there should be a criteria for what would be considered significant enough for inclusion. The criteria doesn't necessarily have to be limited to only popular content. It can include samples of relevant media that adequately describes the community (or sub-communities) at any given point of time, regardless of how well known they are. This is where more "quality" content could be added in.
