Welcome friends, ITT:
We make and share pony art, with absolutely no pressure to deliver anything that's technically good (besides having ponies in it, which makes it good by default)

Make something, share what you've done, and give feedback and motivation to help us all keep improving and creating!

This thread's focus is art, but beginner or low effort content of any kind is welcome here. If you do want to post about something else like music, gamedev, or crafts, though, just note that you may find better help and feedback posting it in the /create/ thread

Are you an experienced artist? Leave some tips, feedback, guides, or tutorials, they're well appreciated here!

Guides, tutorials and resources! Start here!

there were fewer feathers at first but then i thoughts "man are pegasus wings really that skinny? how are they even flying with such scarce plumage? imma increase it" and being anything but a wing expert, see where that got me.
>>
>>41684063
i think the wing position and overall shape should have been adjusted so that it wouldnt look as skinny. adding more feathers would complicate the issue, simple is best in most occasion, but tis a good drawing anon

think more about the shapes of things you are referencing even if theyre obscured by other things in the way, youre right about them being long ovals but they all come together to make a bigger shape. in your drawing the feathers are placed seemingly without any thought of the overall shape of the wing.

its still lacking the curvature in the wings and the feathers look sporadically placed. i just dont think theres much attention drawn to the reference even if there can be shape drawn connecting everything together. maybe picrel can help better explain. try practicing the shape of the wings more and think more in shapes and lines. also im not sure if the wings were supposed to be spread out, thats the impression i got but i followed the reference you provided. if thats the route you were going for you should use those kinds of references, i think that if you practice on wing shape and different wing expressions, youll get to a point where its a lot more comfortable to warp and bend proportions without it looking obscured. again, overall a good drawing just think about shapes anon. theryre everywhere.

I am begging with all my heart that you can take me seriously for a moment
I cannot for the life of me hold a wacom pencil right
no matter how i hold it, either its too unstable and hurts my hand from death gripping it with the ends of my fingers or is too angled to even register with my tablet
I feel so beyond low IQ for even needing to ask something like this but I have no where else to go
how do you hold your pencil/tablet pen?
>>
>>41687196
My nigger you shouldn't be using your fingers to draw. Use your entire arm. Search for" how to hold a pencil " "line art tutorial" things will appear
>>
>>41687196
I've mastered the skill of drawing with one/two thumbs on mobile. Took me since January to do it properly.

Sometimes it looks like I'm gaming on mobile, but I'm actually drawing
>>
>>41687196
you should hold it with both hooves at the start
it takes a lot of practice to use just one
>>
>>41687221
To add to this - it's easier for me as if I have an idea, I can draw it right away. I do not need a monitor or pencil to draw. It's all in the palm of my hand
>>
>>41687204
that's the thing, if I move my whole hand across the tablet my hand will grip it slightly fucking up my line, an elbow movement only goes back and forth so I have to constantly rotate the page to do that and I've tried shoulder movements too, I get it but again my hand will just grip
now you might be saying
>anon u fucking retard just wear a glove or something that reduces friction
tried it and i can't grip the pencil right except at the tips of my finger
as far as my dumbass brain can understand either everyone has the most slippery tables on the planet or are holding their whole arm above the table floating it in place with only the pencil touching the table
also I've already searched up tutorials, I've seen images of how people hold their pencils and that shit does NOT work for me, it feels so unstable
i swear i don't have arthritis or anything and i know i sound deranged but i fucking HATE THIS
>>
>>41687240
You don't accept your weakness and inperfection. You are learning a new medium your lines will come wobbly to learn is to push out of your comfort zone.
>>
>>41687257
osu my fucking beloved has been helping me
pencil grip is still ass i think but i found lowering the tablet to be underneath my desk on top of the desktop pc does wonders for full arm movement, no matter what i did my arm would have friction on the table but now it floats without being wobbly, sometimes i can put my elbow on my leg as another pivot point for side to side motion
of course I doubt this will translate to actual drawing accuracy but its a damn good start
>>
>>41687421
Don't put too much effort on your fingers trying to get the perfect line, you will end up with them fucked up for at least a week if you do too much(trust me)

>to even register with the tablet
Anon, Wacom uses wireless pens. You can hold it almost horizontally if you hold it horizonally it'll get confused on where exactly the pointer is and press the nib with your finger and it'll still work. I can't comprehend how wrong you're doing it that this fails.
And yes, the tablet surfaces are very slippery.
>how do you hold your pencil/tablet pen?
The exact same as normal pencils.

You got her bending her hoof right at the end of her leg she needs more bend in roughly the mid point of her leg. The left eyelash has a minor symmetry issue, but the biggest problem with the eyes is that the irises are tilted and a bit asymmetric making them look a little derpy, they should be roughly level with each other.
some personal recommendations I'd go thinner with the outlines on the irises probably about half of what you did, it lets you see more of the sclera and a bit more or the iris too. Id also say make the eye's bigger but that's just personal preference.
My final verdict would be to practice symmetry, and at a minimum study show screens to get a better understanding of how pony legs work preferably study some horse anatomy alongside it as well.
Hope that helps! if you need an in depth autistic explanation feel free to ask.

nta but meme answer: draw more
Actual answer: getting better and faster at drawing comes with experience and familiarity with the subject. Being able to know the in's and out's of your subject and jutting it down fast and efficient leads to more time being spent on design and the details rather than having to correct mistakes with proportions or the like.

what can help: study first horse™ and get an understanding of the parts you struggle with. Then apply those studies in either sketches, finished pieces or even just doodles you do for fun (which is also a big part in sticking with improvement).
>>
>>41695900
Flats are pretty easy, the finicky part is usually getting texture in there. I mainly use digital but the traditional way of not being able to easily remove your mistakes does a lot for improvement. Makes you think a lot more on your marks.

drawing every day is a meme until youve been drawing a long while. until you find your particular niches and such youll set yourself up for burn out, expectation creep, etc. life is crazy and sometimes you just cant/don't want to draw, and thats just how its gonna be until you surpass it
>>
>>41699604
>>drawing every day is a meme until youve been drawing a long while
I mildly disagree, it works for some people myself included but it doesn't mean it will work for everyone and has some downsides, burnout in particular. also if you have a hard time with motivation and finding ideas your not gonna have a fun time. I agree with the rest of the post though.
>>
drawing every day isn't a neme if you understand the purpose of the exercise:

1. to force you to start making marks out of obligation. many times the hardest part is starting. if you just start squiggling some circles you'll often find yourself going ahead and adding facial features to them, and continue the drawing.
2. building a habit. do it regularly until it becomes almost automatic and you start feeling a bit bad when you're kept from doing it (people who regularly go to the gym might recognise the term 'gym guilt').

the idea isn't that you have to draw a full piece every day or fill out a spread in the sketchbook every day. If you can get ahold of a napkin and draw a circle on it, you've drawn today. that's the bar.
>>
>>41699964
hard disagree, lowering the standard of "drawing" every day just enables you to not even try, just to shit something out to meet an arbitrary quota. you shouldn't have a quota mindset unless your trying to be professional, which most of the anons here either cant or dont want to be. its the wrong mindset

Not an objective thing at all, but If twilight and the butterfly are on separate layers, could you try flipping them so the butterfly is framed by those clouds?
I think it's fucking great man, the flowers are at an appropriate level of detail and twilight's shading might just need some texture but otherwise it's kino and I kneel.

it's like you only read the last two sentences and spent no time thinking further on it.

like, this is the entrance to a deep ass rabbit hole about self-discipline, motivation, procrastination, goal-setting theory, study vs. play, adapting exercises to students, and more, and I don't feel like diving into it. if you have a regimen that you think works better, share it. don't just go "you're wrong!" while missing the point: it's not about the quota, it's about the habit.

It is a good idea, but I think the original might work a bit better because of how the butterfly is moving with the flow of the clouds.

I’ve hit a wall of my own creation i was trying to get or develop a style as one would call it as all my artist friends seem to have there own style and they can do different poses and shading lighting the works the way I was currently drawing ponies after a little bit of practice seemed easy and made sense to me but I felt it was a little repetitive to look at compared to them so I tried looking up and doing alternate methods of drawing pony and absolutely none of them make sense to me at all I feel like I’m starting from scratch all for the sake of saying “I can draw ponies in this seemingly more complex method that looks better than how you’re currently doing it” I know the best way to improve is by doing and all that so I keep trying to nail this new way or go back to how I was originally doing it even though it doesn’t feel like I’m improving at all? Also let me know if I’m being dumb and overthinking this.
>>
>>41701393
holy run on sentence. Don't worry about developing a style because that will happen naturally as you progress. Instead, work on fundamentals like perspective, anatomy, and shading.
Does your output feel repetitive because you're only drawing the pony? You might try putting them in different scenes or situations, try to tell a story etc.
>>
>>41701410
Sorry I always been bad at braking up my sentences and thoughts
Basically I have tried putting them into different scenarios and such and was fun
It just feels like I’ve gotten a firm grasp on how to draw the pony in a certain way and a certain pose obviously changing things like eye color mane cutie mark all that stuff but I feel like it’s more so the are around them is changing and no the base pony it’s self if that makes sense
>>
>>41701472
I agree with >>41701410: it's better to focus on fundamentals than developing a style for the sake of developing a style. At least that's what it sounds like (sorry, your english is broken and there's no examples to go by).

The fundamentals are going to enable you to draw ponies in a greater variety of poses and do it well.

Style is like a personal filter that those fundamentals pass through when drawing. It's gonna come naturally from looking at other people's art and adopting things you like, as well as experimenting and having happy accidents. Some elements of a style you choose deliberately, other things are just you subconsciously drawing things in a way that you think look right to you.

This.
>>41701410
Composition. The most important fundamental is composition. Well-composed drawing will still look okay even if everything else is mediocre, a badly composed drawing will look mediocre even if everything else is amazing.
>>41701393
Also, one important thing. Practice all parts of the image - sketching, linework, coloring, background, shading, etc - simultaneously. Trying to "pull up" a low side of the drawing skill is considerably harder than just developing it from the get-go.
>>
>>41701784
I don't know if I'm doing right but the only way I can practice is making what I want because I'm terrible following steps like guides or books for the sole sake of learning. I try to make different shit and don't repeat stuff to force myself to get better out of obligation to make real what I want to do.

Okay, yeah, I get it; that makes a lot more sense now. Also, holy smokes, I would like to apologize for any anon that had to read that wall of tomfoolery. Apparently forcing yourself to stay up and draw in a way that’s unfamiliar to you and then trying to form a coherent sentence and string of thoughts after a long day isn’t a good idea. I have no clue what past me was on, but they were not cooking.
>>
>>41701905
>and don't repeat stuff
Bad idea. Skills are learned by repetition coupled with iterative mistake-fixing.
Maintain balance between practicing one thing and exploring new things for fastest progress.
>>
>>41701960
I wanted to avoid drawing always the same shit and get so comfy in that area that I would never do anything out of it but you are right. I was thinking instead of doing a simple draw erasing every mistake and then the illustration, doing a lot of drafts before the final work.

I'd say the important thing about expressions is to exaggerate proportions in order to fit them. Looney Tunes is good at this. Is this good to learn now? idk, but something to keep in mind when drawing loosely. You can always draw it a bit tighter after drawing the expression you get later.

Any tips? Software?
How fine is inkscape
>>
>>41704102
This is something I didn't consider at all. Thanks anon.
>>
>>41703948
Absolutely adorable.

>>41704699
The little experience I have with this is that Adobe Illustrator is the only software that's gonna feel like a "complete package" (even though it too has its limitations). Among the alternatives to Illustrator, Inkscape is a fine choice (plus it's nice to help popularize and normalize open-source stuff).

In the end it's gonna come down to how you intend to use it. Just don't use it as an excuse to not practice drawing; you'll still need that understanding of volume, perspective, anatomy, etc.

>>41704102
100% agree. Some experienced artists like to draw the expression first, on top if the base circle, and then fit the shape of the face to the expression. But it takes a bit of practice to do this because you have to have an eye for proportion to make sure things aren't *too* misaligned ("knowing the rules in order to break them").
>>
>>41704699
Inkscape is good, even ignoring #FuckAdobe.
>>
>>41704699
i tried making flags and ponies with inkscape. most of the work in vector is either tracing something or trying to pull the nodes' levers around to get the right shape. inkscape or adobe illustrator will do
>>
>>41704699
inkscape is pretty easy to get a hang of and has everything you need exept in extremely niche cases, a tip I'd give for making images from scratch is to first draw a very rough draft in a classic drawing program or on paper then using that image as a base for the shapes you make in inkscape, also it's always simpler to use a lot of simple shapes than to make one big complex shape, you just have to name them well to avoid getting lost

obviously an animation error, that's something bound to happen in a show where your shitting out episodes once a week for a voracious fan base especially with a character with multiple colors in their hair, generally the more complex the design of a character the harder they are to animate consistently. Most producers and animators wouldn't care about such a minor error due to time constraints plus most people won't pick up on it anyways unless they were autistically fixating on it.

Question
Until which point is acceptable to copy a pose or composition from a screenshot? I was trying to do something mildly complicated and I found a scenes that seems pretty similar to use as a reference. I would try to learn the anatomy and perspective to not having to keep being dependant of other people work.
>>
>>41711912
using references at any skill level is fine, its about building a reliable mental library of resources and shit, but at the end of the day if it works for you one way over another, than go for it. not like you get bonus points either way

Any. Monkey see, monkey do, it's how you gain skills. Just make sure you're actually analyzing what has been done and replicating the process, instead of blindly copying the results.
>>
>>41712523
I mean yes, I see more as the supporting wheels of a child's bike and to deconstruct and analize the forms and techniques rather than just repeat something already done.

there's a few issues, the one i want to focus on is the head and body, what you did i you seemed to uses similar diameter circles to her head for drawing the body when what you typically want to do is have the head be the largest, the rump the second largest and the chest the smallest. Next your legs are too thin and long, for length they should be about one head long for width they should roughly be about half the diameter of the chest at the base and taper to about roughly 2/3rds to 1/2 of that diameter. for the rear leg the show only has the thigh/ flank overlap the torso when they are shown directly from behind, the side, or if there legs are raised/are moving.
hope i helped, i will not be of any use for a bit because im gonna be hammered soon.

ive owned a few XP pens over the years, most trouble they gave me is driver annoyances because id unplug the tablet and plug it back in when i wanted to use it, and had to restart the little driver thing. the one i use now i keep plugged in 24/7 and has been a gem. in the end, id just go for the bigger of the two just for convenience sake, since frankly most tablets at a similar price point work pretty much the same anyway

Must be the first time I make a mildly complex project and is not going as good as I want and not only is taking me a lot of time but also I get tired after a single hour of work. I don't want to give up again and have another unfinished thing on my back. Any suggestion to not get tired?
>>
>>41739970
Beautiful Appool
>>41740784
What usually works for me is taking a step back and analysing the whole thing before seperating all the parts making up the project. Then I tend to tackle each part one by one and makes it more managable to approach. I don't think you get tired after one hour but simply your brain is overwhelmed by all the info you need.

Also taking breaks from the project and work on other things can be good, that's how I managed to keep working on the same painting for four months during this summer atleast. Though there is always a risk of not getting back to the project.
>>
>>41740807
Yesterday I had my day off and was like two hours of break between one of work and I feel it's useless this time management. Also is annoying getting home after my work and be so tired that I can't keep advancing significantly on the week.

Balebros, you ever have that sense of imperfection when you draw, and take way too much time needed to correct every single out-of-place line? And in the final piece you just don't feel like it's the best

Of course, we're artists after all. To go forward you need to let yourself be able to make "bad" art, bad . And sometimes you gotta push through that ugly stage every artwork has to come to a finished state. We spend so much time looking at our work and obsessing over details that only we ever really see. Nothing is ever really perfect and working towards improvement is hard. But either take a break and come back to it or let go of the perfectionism a bit. One bad line or circle does not define your art journey.
>>
>>41742598
drawing is very much about finding that magical "good enough" point sometimes. your best of the best drawings might come ever 10, 20, even 100 attempts. thats why its important to have fun drawing often. that way those attempts fly by quicker and more reliably
>>
>>41742598
Nope, I've made my peace with "good enough here". If what I'm drawing doesn't focus on teeth, I'm not going to waste time on perfect teeth. If what I'm drawing focusses on perfect ass, you know I'm going to spend my time on perfecting that ass.
>>
>>41742965
what if you need the perfect ass mouth with teeth lining the ponut to bite any wayward dicks
>>
>>41743157
Then that's what I focus on.

Possibly. To explain, the interior train car background lighting is the worst because it feels flat, but I don't think the lighting on Frosty makes sense either. Filly's looks better, but I'm still not sure it's right. As for panel 7, I couldn't figure out how to draw the train's engine from the angle the train was at, so I ended up raising Frosty up a little to mostly hide it (nor could I work out whether the wheels and tracks were visible at the angle, but Frosty would have already hid most of that so I just kinda dropped the issue). Which in turn messed up the sense of depth and made the horizon look too high. In hindsight, it also made me draw the buildings too largely for the distance they're supposed to be at since I did that later and neglected to hide Frosty's layers in the process.

Recently got messaged by some guy who wanted to try doing RP. Never done roleplay before so I don't really know what to expect, but figured the worst that could happen is that I wouldn't like it so I figured I'd give it a shot. Anyway, designed a new OC to RP as and I'm looking for some advice on how I might flesh her out a bit more and maybe improve the design. I'd like to keep her white since I love white mares, but not dead set on the rest of the color scheme, feel like it could be improved. Personality wise I'm thinking I want her to have a cutie mark she doesn't really understand and she is searching for the true meaning, like trouble shoes. Not really sure what the cutie mark should be though, just know it should be fairly vague so any ideas for that would be helpful

Here's the first piece of pony I posted here, and a second attempt I did today on the bottom. I was trying to keep my second attempt as close to the original as possible in terms of composition, but I had to change it a little to make it more pleasing to look at. It was pretty fun to work on this as a little draw. I might do another one soon where I can make the pose look more dynamic. Any critique welcome.
