So they may sometimes insert random bits of cruelty or cynicism to feel like their work is more mature than it is. I noticed this as a kid when watching post-motive SpongeBob and some episodes seemed like they were leading to a happy ending, but then in the last minute that got subverted and everyone was left miserable. I think this is the same kind of thing, show random acts of injustice because "that happens in life" and feel better about your work and your life choices.
