>>41825908Yeah, after letting the movie sit for a bit I think the problem I have is just that DoTS was just much more balanced for lack of a better word. I think tamers is at his best when he plays into the comedy and lets the characters form around his sense of humor. But when tamers decided to experiment with DoTS and he saw how popular the more serious scenes were he wanted to capitalize on it and started adding more of that earnest storytelling into his newer episodes. And to be fair, I think tamers can make some good serious scenes when he tries. But he doesn't have a lot of experience keeping up that serious tone for an extended amount of time so it ends up feeling like a bunch of isolated melodramatic scenes stitched together. His stories work a lot better when he drip feeds that earnest storytelling to the viewer one episode at a time. For example, this Pinkiedash scene was a lot more impactful than most of the stuff that came after DoTS imo because it stands out in an episode full of comedy. You can tell how Pinkie and Dash are supposed to feel about each other without a single word being spoken. A lot of the newer episodes will just have the characters monologue about their feelings which just isn't as interesting. I think this is part of the reason why the bowling episode has become so beloved here. It feel much more like one of his earlier episodes that were mostly comedy. The more simple plots are also preferable to Shattered Harmony's attempt to juggle multiple different complex plots all at once. I mean this movie was supposed to be focused on Cadence, but we only get to see her after she has snapped and she ends up getting fixed by the end of the movie anyway. It would have been much better if we got an episode that was something like "Chrysalis invites Cadence and Shining to the changeling kingdom" where Chrysalis' plot could be revealed more subtlety and maybe we could see Cadence's initial reaction upon realizing what happened to Shining. A lot of the action scenes felt unnecessary to the plot as well. Tamers said he sees himself a more of an artist than a writer, so I can understand why he would want to make cool shit for fun but it does slow the story down even if it is entertaining.

The issues of build up mostly fall onto who the actual focus of the movie was: Cadance and the bug since they sparsely appear and for a while it seemed like terms were getting slightly better between them as they were bonding but then she goes on to this and it feels like she went semi backwards since she just went with mind control again.again, the fact that this movie wasn't even an hour minimum like the others played a huge roll since on top of the time, unlike the others, this one also moved focus for side plots that directly had little or nothing to do with the main story going on meaning time was wasted, Cutting Aj & rarity would have given more time to the main story since they don't actually go on to help at all. I'd argue you could even do the same to rainbow since she also vanishes from the plot very early on.

Tamers stuff seems to be rekindling the dead drive to create in me. I have ideas a lot and I write them down. Even wrote an intro to one of my ideas in the last years.
