On the topic of fics that are never going to be finished, has anyone here read this?https://www.fimfiction.net/story/18256/this-platinum-crownIt's a sequel to The Best Night Ever from the same guy, nearly 900k words adventure epic about Blueblood and co. written over the course of almost 7 years before being abandoned in 2019 during the final arc. I'm curious about it because the premise looks interesting and I expect goid things from the TBNE guy, but it's in a really unique and awkward position of being a fucking behemoth of a story and unfinished at the same time. The author hasn't been on Fimfic in over a year, too.

>>42483516That is so very not what the story is about that I'm shocked you could even come to this conclusion. It baits with that and toys with the idea before saying that actually this was not good at all. If you think the fic is in support of them, then you have the same brain disease twitter leftists have, the one where you browse every aspect of your life through the lens of their political denomination. The first contact between the botmare and the fake commies is essentially her going "wtf these retards are so dumb; the king did things so much better!" twenty times in a chapter, and IIRC they're consistently incompetent all fic, leaving Bit to do everything by herself (using the pre-commie lore). There is actually a plot point where Bit fixes a heating station after the commies admit that they murdered everyone who knew how to use it during the "oppressive system" rule, and then they started dying from cold by the hundreds when they couldn't fix it.

Chapter 6 of Nineteen Eighty-Four is only four pages. This strikes me. I regularly see fimfic chapters approach or break 10,000 words.
>>42486108Usually a crossover refers to other fictional works. Voltaire and other fics with real life people like that don't really work. You can't really call something like A Great Endeavor a crossover.
>>42489415>he thinks history is real >>42489409Depends, really. 40k words is the Hugo cutoff for what constitutes a novel, for example, but chapter sizes can be more varied even in "real" fiction. For example Les Mis has 365 relatively short chapters (they average a little less than 1.8k words each), which is noted as peculiar when talking about it. Meanwhile LotR's longest chapter is over 16k words long (nearly a novella's worth by itself), with the second longest at about 13k and the shorter ones mostly around 5k.
>>42489409I once saw a chapter that was like 240k but I cannot remember the story.
>>42489141Congratulations, you're not that kind of autistic.
>>42489415>Voltaire and other fics with real life people like that don't really work. Most of them don't, and I get not calling that fic a crossover if you're a tag purist, but TBoAPW had an extremely overtly "I put the thing I liked into the pony world" feeling to it, confirmed later by some of the A/Ns. The goal of the story was to have a character the author liked interact with ponies, full stop. Real-world history is, at best, a tool and a tangentially related background to that fic. In fact, because of the temporal and causal fuckups, for much of the fic the human world is in an AU where a human-speaking donkey takes Frederick the Great's place as the King of Prussia. A Great Endeavor is most likely about ponies in a real historical event—TBoAPW is about taking the concept of a character that the author thought could be interesting in Equestria and exploring it further. That's why I called it a crossover.

Law-savvy anons, what law is it that would allow you to due Hasbro if they copied your fanfiction and that causes writers at cons to consistently lie about never looking at fandom stuff to avoid legal repercussions?

>>42490741To the extent that it's actually law, it's copyright law. Pretty much the whole of copyright law, in fact, because what copyright law is supposed to do is give creators the right to control what copies are made of their work (hence the name). If I write a story where a green man comes through a portal to Equestria and turns the M6 into his harem, and if Hasbro creates a show with the same plot points, uses the same OCs, has the same bits of dialogue, etc., then they have copied my work (in whole or in part). Legally, they owe me, because it is my right to control when and how my work is copied. But in practice, that's not exactly what's going on. You can't copyright an idea. If I say, "I think a great story would be a green man coming through a portal to Equestria and turning the M6 into his harem," but I never turn that into a story (or art, theater, etc.) then that's an idea, not a creative work. If Hasbro creates something which portrays a green man coming through a portal to Equestria and turning the M6 into his harem, and if I sue them for stealing my idea, then I will lose because ideas are not protected. However, Hasbro doesn't want to get sued in the first place. The stakes are high, juries are fickle, and lawyers are expensive. Plus, being sued for stealing an idea is bad publicity even if you win. Hasbro can't stop people from suing them, but they can make sure they're in a good position when they are. So they make it their official policy that their employees are not allowed to look at fan works, and they destroy fan mail sent to their creative teams (like the infamous incident where their lawyers sent a little girl a notice announcing they had shredded her fan drawing). That way, anybody who sues them looks like an idiot, and the case is unlikely to ever go very far. That's the real reason why all industry creatives lie and say they don't look at fan works: It's a condition of their employment, and they don't want to lose their jobs.
>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/232554/how-many-have-you-forgiven-todayThis is slop and you should not read it. Anon is a Gary Stu and the main plot is just a rationalization pathetic over anons emotional pity party vindictiveness. Nobody is very in character and the romance is not believable. And the thing is that that is also to a good degree because of the main plot point. It drags down the rest of the story which would have been more enjoyable without it. The best parts of the fic are when that point is not at the forefront and that are not directly tied to it.
>>42491629Okay but can you point me to a written piece of law that states what's written in your first paragraph in clear terms so I can dunk on someone in a conversation elsewhere arguing the opposite (IP holders can sue fanartists because all fanart is IP theft)?
>>42491793I think you're missing the subtlety of the situation. Hasbro owns the copyright to MLP. That gives them the exclusive right to produce MLP media. If you draw fan art, then you are committing a copyright violation (there are some exceptions, but this is mostly true). That is because you are using their IP. Despite that, your fan art is yours. If Hasbro reproduces your fan art without your permission, then they are committing a copyright violation on top of your copyright violation. For example, it would be a violation for Hasbro to publish a "Best MLP Fan Art" book without permission from all the contributing artists. If they did, then the artists would be able to win a lawsuit. But it would be a complicated and messy lawsuit that would involve the court deciding the relative contributions of Hasbro and the individual artists. Most large media companies do not sue their fans for creating fan works most of the time; it's bad publicity and hurts sales. But if they think that what you're doing will harm their IP, they will. They'll issue a cease and desist notice, and if you don't listen, I'm sure that will progress to a lawsuit. They'll win that lawsuit, and not just because they can afford better lawyers.
>>42492041I think you're missing the part where I'm asking for verifiable legal statements that support your claim, because the retard I'm arguing with won't take a random anon's word as proof he's wrong.

The side plot in the framing device of "Five Star Service" clearly separates the Human side of the portal into bigots, those who don't care, and horsefuckers. Most of it is about who will let consenting adults do what they want to each other, but it's not a particularly small part of a large fic and it bleeds into many of the related topics you'd expect.

>>42493570It's fit her character forever, so it's been fanon since the beginning. Unlike Celestia, she can choose not to spend her time on statecraft, so she can have hobbies. Artistic hobbies are appropriately thematic: the moon's role as a muse is well-represented in basically all forms of art. Besides painting or writing poetry, she's also often written as a matron of the arts.As far as canon, she dreamwalks: a necessarily creative endeavor. I don't think Between Dusk and Dawn really leaves any other possible interpretation other than to closely associate her with artistic creativity. She:- carves a statue- impossibly plays a banjo- sings about wanting to read- goes to see Ponyliacci- and an art museumSo it seems like the writers were also pretty aware of these being core distinctions for her from Celestia.
>>42493625Also her idea of a fun time is mailing a postcard.
>>42493727That doesn't really have a connection to art, though, other than that she also likes leaning over a counter directly in front of her sister while wearing a top, a tail bun, and nothing else.Actually, that sort of indirection and layered cause and effect does go with the point of the scene.

On the other hand, most of the lost scenes were from the hell orgy, so maybe it's not the worst thing in the world there wasn't ever a director's cut.>>42490741>never looking at fandom stuffThat comes from author Marion Zimmer Bradley, who had one of her books, Contraband, canceled due to copyright drama over a 1991 fanfic called Masks. Back in the day, sci-fi authors regularly read and edited the fanzines. Marion did read Masks and that triggered the drama. It's pretty murky what, exactly, happened, though. There was never an actual legal case and it was all handled through lawyer letters. You can read the unnecessarily long article here: https://fanlore.org/wiki/Marion_Zimmer_Bradley_Fanfiction_ControversyBradly was pretty big in the author circles, so the story got out pretty quickly and rapidly spread. Ever since, authors have vowed never to read fanfics to avoid any headaches like that happening to them. Fanfic authors would have a tough hill to climb in the US. SCOTUS ruled in Fourth Estate Public Benefit Corp. v. Wall-Street.com that a valid copyright registration is needed prior to filing any lawsuit. In addition, 17 USC § 106 gives the copyright owner the "exclusive rights" "to prepare derivative works based upon the copyrighted work". So, legally, only Hasbro can create or license something that involves the MLP copyright.

Has no one ever written an episodic domestic timeskip fic? Like, not on a macro scale, just around 2-5 years or so. Writing how ponyville and the ponies in it have changed over the years. It'd show how the world and the characters have all developed, as well as being able to add new characters and plot lines, and adding returning characters to create new scenarios and incidents. One (or multiple) of the M6 could be written as having foals depending on how far time has been skipped. Like, exploring how AJ’s farm, the boutique, RD’s career, or Pinkie’s bakery are going, as well as how it affects both them and the people around them. Some might not even be in ponyville anymore, like RD being a wonderbolt or if it's pre-alicorn (ideally) Twilight being in the middle of studying to be an archmage and whatever that entails. Showing how the fillies have grown up and how their relationships have all shifted in their tween/young teen years. You'd think that that'd be one of the more popular premises to write for but I can't recall any that are over 20k words and in an episodic format.

Not-quite-false advertising in,>/FSBC/Is it still shipbait when the official statement confirms that there will be no shipping whatsoever? We got the bug into the cave! Hooray! Even if it's by a technicality, the fic avoids the shame of Shining in a Minor. More seriously, I just don't have too much to say about the story. As expected, it ticked off all the boxes it seemed to approach in week 1, resolved its conflicts in a decent way, fired off all of its Chekhov's guns, and even tumbled into an ending that almost wasn't too bad. All the while, it was being clearly puppeteered by the author, but at least there seemed to be some kind of a plan, and it was never a chore to read. Almost. But that's just repeating week 1 discussion, for the most part. So, instead, I'll nitpick some things that seemed particularly weird. For one thing, the fic continues with telling the story in a way that falls apart under logical scrutiny, but that's OK—we already knew that. But by far the weirdest thing about this changeling redemption story is how it condemns them so much more than the show! This Thorax will be leading Equestria's SS into the hive in a few years, as one of the "good ones". It's crazy that the moral of the story was, "No, they're irredeemable". WTF? It's even crazier when considering the way the fic tries to retrofit itself into FiM's story. First it bends itself backwards to maintain some kind of compatibility with ACW, but then continues from that with "and Thorax tried, but no changelings ever bought into the pony ideals of harmony and being good", before finally making him more or less give up on his species. It is even more strange due to the attempts to keep the fic's overall atmosphere and content close-ish to the canon show. Despite the threat of starvation and bug death penalties, nothing too bad happens. The technical side of things continued to be marred with the occasional errors and weird phrasing/word choices, but it's not too distracting. It gets a bit too emotionally dramatic near the end for me.Twilight... doesn't do much. All she does this week is putting herself in danger at Thorax's call, only to later tearfully praise him for rescuing her. It's a Thorax fix through and through. Pharynx is the second main character, if anything. I don't think he's mischaracterized here, but I do think that all of the spotlight he gets on his and Thorax's relationship makes him look ridiculously soft. Oh, right, and Chryssie shows up for two scenes but then somehow ends up being somewhat passive, only doing what the plot demands of her. In short, none of the characters are *bad*, but I don't think you can praise any but Thorax as good—which is fair enough in a Thoraxfic, I suppose. My one critique regarding the plot was the length of the "epilogue" section. Basically everything after he leaves Twilight takes ~75% pages too many. The fic really should've been finished in 10, not 40, pages. This is the most "it's fine" fic I have ever read.

>>42494150>Traps aren't tranniesWhat, precisely, is the difference between a trap and a tranny? >>42495031The difference between a trap and a femboy is that one is 2D and one is 3D. A trap is the meme of 'draw a girl, call it a boy' because the point is that you have a guy that knows they're a guy and is happy being a guy, but they look so perfectly feminine that you can't tell they're a guy.Traps are an ancient anime trope and often get a kick out of tricking dudes or are mortified and try to prove how manly and not girly they are, often failing to do so.Femboys are just effeminate IRL dudes. They can't be traps because they can't naturally look like a girl.Neither of these wishes to be female and thus are not trannies.>Flavours of fagAs in, traps, herms, and dickgirls. Such things really require rampant bisexuality as they combine male and female aesthetics.None of these things are tranny either, though trannies have tried to erase traps for the reasons mentioned earlier in that traps are effortlessly feminine looking and perfectly so, which angers the AGPs, and they have tried to claim themselves as dickgirls but those are 2D like traps as they do not exist. There is no such thing IRL as a girl with a dick, only guys with tits. They also obviously can't claim to be herms for what should be obvious reasons.

And after a while, they post another picture that reveals that the attractive "woman" has a dick. "Trap" refers to the idea that these people entrap you: You don't realize that the woman you're lusting after has a dick until it's too late. It comes from a meme image of Admiral Akbar from Episode 6 shouting, "It's a trap!"The manga and anime trope comes from yaoi and shounen ai. It arose independently. Also, you're obviously a self-hating trans female. Some day, you'll be a trap too.

I think there were multiple scenarios that would've given us a good climax right around here, but we didn't get any. The story was quite ripe for the saving, but it just sort of ends up being this weird atmosphere Thorax/Twilight torture fic. There's also a contrast with the main character's show-like ideas and actions and then them getting beat/strangled to within an inch of their lives. And the contrast between the author saying NO SHIPPING in an a/n and then literally just writing shipping for the whole last quarter of the fic. At least neither of them broke their promises and the end I guess. The fic just sorta ended up disappointing. I feel like most people will want more of one part and less of another. More actual survival and less forced plot food stealing and waiting around starving. Less torture and more shipping. Less shipping and more torture. Also a whole 1/5 of this fic is post climax. Which is interesting and might usually be something I like, but in this case I was just left reading this entire part in a haze of disappointment since the fic had already squandered its potential. Also Pharanx should've gone with thorax, he even said 'you shouldn't go alone' at one point or something like that. Also Twilight probably should've been more of a character so the story could've not relied on Thorax for everything. >>42494894>Is it still shipbait when the official statement confirms that there will be no shipping whatsoever? They could've actually kissed about 4 different times at the end and it would've been a better build up than most romance fics>resolved its conflicts in a decent wayJust gonna disagree. We got blueballed and every outcome went as mundane as it could've. Pharanx never even saw Twilight kek. Where was our 3(-to-5) way battle in the desert when Thorax uses his flare where everyone is forced to find out about each other? Why didn't the hive detect it when it sucked up Twilight's magic that she kept casting at it?>but at least there seemed to be some kind of a plankek it stuck out to me that one of the more enjoyable chapters had an a/n that said this was the only unplanned chapter lol. I think it was a chrysalis one>It's crazy that the moral of the story was, "No, they're irredeemable". WTF?fucking kek. I didn't expect the part where he says this just isn't working and he is an outlier, immediately followed by them invading canterlot lmao
>>42494894>It's even crazier when considering the way the fic tries to retrofit itself into FiM's story>It is even more strange due to the attempts to keep the fic's overall atmosphere and content close-ish to the canon show.Yeah, both of these just fuck with the fic. I don't think it gained anything from trying to adhere to the show canon specifically, as you mention. >It gets a bit too emotionally dramatic near the end for me.When they part ways at the pass, it's actually hilarious and far more so because of the a/n from like chapter 2. They are literally joining together and physically sharing love with each other and the author doesn't want any shipping>It's a Thorax fix through and through.Absolutely, Twilight only gets worse in the second half which is impressive considering she gets gut rot in the first half>Basically everything after he leaves Twilight takes ~75% pages too many.Completely agreed. Especially egregious was Spike blubbering around after for some reason he was the one to find Thorax so the scene takes fucking forever and at no point does the reader care because Spike cockblocked any decency the reunion could've had. It would've been much a better scene if Thorax just flew straight into ponyville and never stopped in the everfree.
>>42494894I don't think the fic is fine. It's not good, I would never read it again, and I don't think I would even recommend it to a Thorax fan on the assumption that there must be something better. If not for the club, I would've dropped it when Twilight does almost nothing except starve for an entire week, just waiting for Thorax to feed her.I don't exactly regret continuing to read it, there were a couple good Pharynx scenes after that. It's just absurd how pathetic Twilight was in this fic, and how little the author cares for her, even to have Spike not know the name of Smarty Pants. It was very unsatisfying to have Pharynx fail to meet Twilight, and him pwning the poorly named bullies didn't make up for that, either.I liked the epilogue, post-ACW section of the fic the most, I guess. It seemed to have the fewest typos, the fewest awkwardly phrased sentences, and Thorax was the least bad. It still sucked, including a scene with Thorax gazing south of the hive while planning trip to Equestria, which is north of them.I don't agree that the moral was "they're irredeemable," it was more like "Thorax can't redeem them on his own." There was no B-team supporting him, and he had to spend a long time in TCE as well before he had the resolve to face Chrysalis in the show.
>>42495329Yeah I think the only thing I'll remember from this is it's the thorax fic where Twilight just starves in a desert>It was very unsatisfying to have Pharynx fail to meet Twilight, and him pwning the poorly named bullies didn't make up for that, either.Absolutely. This was the biggest blunder of the fic. The fic manages to dodge oh so narrowly around a multitude of interesting climaxes and instead pulls off not doing any of them. >It still sucked, including a scene with Thorax gazing south of the hive while planning trip to Equestria, which is north of them.kek, I didn't notice that
teasing a girl you have a crush on doesn't work if it's a guy you're trying to forcibly turn into a girl.
>>42494894Augh! I didn't finish it! I got up through the chapter "Lost in the Rain" (where Thorax and Twilight reunite), but life has become unexpectedly busy and yada yada. But honestly, does it really matter? This fic is such a slog to get through despite the quick chapters. Thorax has become the worst part of this two-part fic. I'm so sick of all his bitching and moaning and the never-ending pity party that is his life. It's hard to feel sympathy for him, because most of it is his own fault. The club commented on how Thorax's story took precedence over Twilight's last week, but this week, it's all Thorax, all the time. Pharynx finally being direct and chastising Thorax for constantly lying (and not even having the strength or common sense to back it up) was cathartic, but Thorax gets off the hook immediately after revealing that he was in contact with Twilight with yet another "just trust me, bro"! It feels very contrived and is clearly supposed to be emotional, but it lacks any kind of impact. Twilight's not that great, either. As with Thorax, I really started to feel the burn that other Anons had already noticed last week. She's flat as a board with regards to characterisation. She has two moods: fleeing in terror from a tatzlwuorm, and gushing over Thorax -- fawning over him when he's warming her bed and pining after him when he's not. Is the author sure these two characters aren't developing romantic feelings? Because they're far too willing to die for each other than would be reasonably expected. Events just kind of happen and continue to happen. It's powerfully mediocre, even boring. Everything is predictable, and the prose being decent doesn't make up for a lack of anything interesting going on. I'll finish this story eventually, but I doubt the current trajectory will change at all.
>>42494894>Despite the threat of starvation and bug death penalties, nothing too bad happens.Right? You keep waiting for anyone to actually die or have an injury that isn't just covered in mucus and forgotten about, but it never happens. Even Pharynx shooting the bullies in the chest turns out to be a "stun gun" (that incidentally makes them beg for their lives and appear to stop breathing). The worst part is that Pharynx killing them would have been a better beat for the story, but the author simply can't bring himself to commit to anything "dark". There absolutely should have been a scene where Chrysalis kills a random bug as an example to the rest of the hive. >and then literally just writing shipping for the whole last quarter of the ficYeah, the relationship between Thorax and Twilight was way too ambiguous. You could write it off as Thorax getting too attached to the literal first creature in his life who was nice to him, and Twilight simply feeling desperate for social connection and trying to replace the void her friends left. However, that explanation would raise its own doubts as to the legitimacy of their feelings. >Also Pharanx should've gone with thorax>Pharanx never even saw Twilight kek. Where was our 3(-to-5) way battle in the desert>>42495329>It was very unsatisfying to have Pharynx fail to meet TwilightAbsolutely! I can't yet say for certain that something like this never comes, but it certainly should have come at some point before where I stopped. The author did everything to set it up, and he inexplicably never writes it. >I don't think I would even recommend it to a Thorax fanAgreed, this is not a good Thorax even if you like his character outside this particular fic. The fic starts out alright, but it just harps on the same traits over and over again for 80% of the fic. Yes, Thorax is weak and pathetic. We know how weak and pathetic he is.
>>42494231I have timeskips in my fics because I'm too lazy to write the details there.
>>42495390Where did you gain this fine insight?
>>42494918Voting lost and found.
>>42495215>There's also a contrast with the main character's show-like ideas and actions and then them getting beat/strangled to within an inch of their lives. This is one thing that I don't entirely hate. The fic was going for a "show-style" story, but the bugs are cruel and alien so they contrast with the ponies. That's assuming this is intentional, which considering Twilight's more graphic hunger/stomach rot episodes might not be.>I feel like most people will want more of one part and less of another. It was extraordinarily unambitious story.>Also Pharanx should've gone with thorax,Oh wow, I like that idea. It could've saved the fic! ..but it would also be something interesting that deviates from the strict framing ("as close to FiM's events as possible") so of course we didn't get that.>Twilight probably should've been more of a characterYes, she does nothing in week 2.>We got blueballed and every outcome went as mundane as it could've.Maybe calling it 'decent' was too much. What I meant was that all plot point were wrapped up, and that none of them felt like asspulls. Yes, he also went for the most mundane option possible, but that's a separate issue in my head.>Pharanx never even saw Twilight kek. This one, however, I'll single out as an immense squandered potential. He had to try VERY HARD to make that part lamer, and yet he succeeded. Why would you make them miss each other?>>42495233>far more so because of the a/n from like chapter 2Yes. No idea why it's written like a shipfic. Maybe Thorax is just gay?>egregious was Spike blubbering aroundYeah, another argument in favor of the "no fic was made better by including Spike".>>42495329>I don't think the fic is fine. You know, you are probably right. I probably had it as a 5/10 in my head after finishing it, but really it can't be more than a 4.5/10, maybe just a 4. I didn't leave a like on it, and I also can't see myself rec'ing it to anyone ever. But I also don't think it's bad bad. Fine wasn't the right word—it's mediocre, with the negative connotations of the word being intentional.>Thorax can't redeem them on his own.Maybe, but he's not getting another shot. The one big thing that this fic changes from canon is that Thorax is already with the ponies. He leaves the hive after giving up. What I meant is that yes, he does plan to do PR for the bugs, but he's not trying to change the swarm anymore, which is a weirdly downer ending for a bugfic.
>>42495498>life has become unexpectedly busyIt tends to do that often, yes.>This fic is such a slog to get throughEh, I wouldn't say that. In fact, I'd probably even claim the opposite: that this was the fic with the best "ease of reading" to "quality" ratio. Which makes it sound like a slopfic, and that's also not what I meant, but whatever.>Pharynx finally being direct and chastising Thorax for constantly lying Pharynx was the best part of this story, and it unfortunately isn't very close. After the first two chapter Twilight just kind of passively dies in the background, and Thorax... is just Thorax. Except that I think that maybe this this is true to his characterization. If you recall the episodes where he was still looking like a proper changeling, then yes, living an endless pity party is probably accurate to his time in the hive. He even recalls something like that in the show.>Is the author sure these two characters aren't developing romantic feelings? The (completely not intentional) way I'm reading this fic is that Twilight fell for the bug but he's gay and oblivious. I mean, they are sharing love energy near the story's climax, and that is—surprisingly—not an euphemism for sex!>It's powerfully mediocreKek, but I can't say that it's not.>>42495544>You keep waiting for anyone to actually die or have an injury that isn't just covered in mucusI can respect trying to keep a fanfic close to the show, so I, personally, didn't wait for that. But as I said in another reply, while this is clearly something the author intended, it doesn't extend to all events in the fic, so you end up with something that reads like it doesn't want to commit in either direction. It was much closer to show-like than not, so I absolutely did not want Chryssie killing bugs.>way too ambiguousI don't want to look fanfic-poisoned and find shipping everywhere, but to be desu, it's way, way past being ambiguous. Also, you've lost Twianon's (You), and now he will starve.>this is not a good Thorax It's not, but that problem comes from Thorax never being good. The reason why he's not allowed to develop too much, I think, is that the author didn't want that happening "ahead of time" with regards to canon timeline. Which is dumb, but that's how it read to me.
>ponies have unique scents depending on their color scheme and personality I can only recall seeing this in HIE fics and I can only vaguely guess as to why that’s the case.
>>42495722>vaguely guessDon't pussyfoot around this, we all know exactly why that is.
>>42495722It's an outsider observation. Ponies wouldn't need to observe this, and Spike is too much of a dork for self-inserters to feel comfortable writing about him. Alternatively, maybe there just happens to be a huge overlap between self-insert fags and smell fags.
>>42495730It's like everyone forgot the Tali Zorah smell analysis guy.
>>42495215>Also Pharanx should've gone with thoraxI was waiting for this to come up every time Pharynx told Thorax that he was the thing he lived for in the hive, and that he was nothing without his brother. If Thorax has nothing at the hive, and intends to leave, leaving Pharynx with nothing, they should obviously just leave together. There could've been an argument about how Phaynx believes in Chrysalis, or the other drones depend on him, or something, but it was never even considered.>>42495668It's really not that different from canon. In Thorax's introduction, he says he abandons the hive after ACW (the gap in time between then and Season 6 is unexplained), and then the Spike episode happens, and he's left working for Shiny and Candy. In the fic, he similarly saves Spike from falling down a ravine, which is really the only downer part of the ending. It looked like it was setting up the rest of canon: he would make some friends, return to the hive, challenge Chrysalis, and become the big gay.The main difference from canon is closing the unreasonable timing gap and that he ends up with Twilight vouching for him instead. Is it worth trading a Spike episode for Twilight's character being erased? Since Spike didn't die, I'm going to say no, but it's otherwise a close call.
>>42494894>the fic avoids the shame of Shining in a MinorI'm really curious about this line. Was this intentionally not Cadence in A Minor? What's the shame of it, either way? I kinda liked CiAM.

>>42495852Just a non-serious joke about fic names misrepresenting their contents. This is "The Bug in the Cave", but for almost the whole story it's Twilight who's in the cave, and Thorax visits her from time to time. He finds himself in a cave for about half a scene in the epilogue. As for CiAM, I also kinda liked it, but at the end of the fic, when they are finally able to have sex, Cadance transforms into the high school version of herself and they roleplay it, too. The "joke" is that the climax (hue) of the fic shows Shining in a (=inside) character who appears to be underage (=a minor). Also the fact that his issues end up with him getting turned on by younger, weaker mares several times in the fic. In short: "[character]" + "in a" + "minor" rather than the intended "[character]" + "in" + "A minor".
>>42495917There's another fic with Shining in a minor you should read one day.

She has a much closer, more familial or cultish relationship to them than Celestia does the Royal Guard. She's a warrior princess; this is backed by the comics more than the show. She has an affinity for creatures of the night, basically the same as Fluttershy's power but for nocturnal animals.Although it's canon, the show didn't expand on her retention of NMM's powers: shapeshifting, and turning into a cloud. Many fics add the ability to shadow-walk as an alternative to teleportation.Treating the sky as her own personal canvas for art or trolling.Less directly connected to canon, she has an affinity for fae/occult elements, can reach the fairy realm or summon demonic entities, communicate with them. More canon, that she's an expert at dark magic, and has the strength to not be corrupted by it (anymore). The canon ones are pretty obvious. That she has a non-nonsense attitude and not much patience (except for foals). Strict and dutiful for things related to princessing, but playful and relaxed outside of that. But a lot of the 1000 word fics in these contests need a bit more word to breathe, or at least refine and hone their scope. Aim small, miss small kind of thing. If anything, it's great practice for applying it in long fics.
>>42496833Hey now, there's no need to get bent out of shape over the order of some words. There are several chapters of Twilight using her wits to decipher Luna's elaborate, trap-filled dungeons, and if they're maybe more MMDW-themed than Daring Do themed, who's to even say what that means?Anyway, I'm sure you'll be mollified by all the aforementioned flirty horse sex and sometimes mentioned Daring Do in the fanfiction.

>>42501062The whole in/on thing isn't even half as clearly canon as people like to pretend. The strongest argument towards in is the Mare in the Moon itself, but the actual line doesn't come from anyone involved. It's from a children's book retelling of the events that Twilight herself considers untrustworthy enough she fails to realise Luna is Celestia's sister despite reading about it, one most probably written significantly after the events since it itself treats it like a story and not a historical record, meaning Celestia deliberately had Equestria forget Luna existed. There is no strong canon source to prove she was in and not on and on fanfics are perfectly valid (not that they wouldn't be either way), especially when Hasbro approved of on material.

I'm fine with the in the moon interpretation, but it's unintuitive and it's annoying when people get up their own ass about it, since it's not even that important. And the surface of the moon is kind of a cool setting for a prison as opposed to either being buried inside it (weird and hard to imagine) or some magical metaphorical bullshit.
>>42501255It literally shows her profile in the moon, and her profile disappears when she returns to Equestria. The only way for that to make sense is magical metaphorical bullshit.I'm not going to let facts stand in the way of a good story, though. I'll let authors have "on the moon" if they want it.
>>42501246The better question is what Luna was doing for 1000 years if she was awake and conscious chilling on the surface of the moon. She could have spent a millenia playing Dr. Manhattan/God and creating life or whatever. Or 1000 years of making giant dicks out of moon rocks. Either way. Got to keep yourself sane.
>>42501260>Got to keep yourself sane.She didn't.
>>42501257I won't let them have it if they just want it. The moonscape is not, in fact, a cool setting if all you can think of for it is a couple pages of bleak landscape "and then NMM was mad for the rest of the time."

Anyone read that Dexter's Lab crossover where the author imagines the elements of harmony did in fact devise a worse punishment for Luna after returning as NMM by keeping her amongst mortals so she can suffer eternal emotional torment. >>42371921I read https://www.fimfiction.net/story/418430/after-i-looked-up-the-stars-had-gone-away as well, and it's excellent at what it does well despite its flaws. The atmosphere is nearly immaculate; it perfectly captures the feeling of being in a nightmare far better than any fic I've read that's explicitly set in one. What's key, like the other anon said, is the sense of things feeling deeply "unnatural" or "wrong" rather than simply threatening or unknown. Nightmare fics will usually try to effect this feeling by using familiar settings with "changes" of varying degrees. Think stuff like ponies all having constant blank expressions, or hallways being longer or taller than normal, or the air being inexplicably dry and causing an overpowering thirst. The feeling is usually stronger with subtler changes (e.g. mirrors having a slight delay vs. blood pouring from faucets), but I suspect that that's not the true source of this kind of horror. After all, this fic has the stars disappearing and Ponyville replaced with a black void -- totally un-subtle, yet the fic is still more horrifying than most fics set in nightmares. No, the important thing in creating a nightmarish atmosphere is in the thought processes of the characters. Even slightly "off" things that wouldn't necessarily ring any alarm bells during the day can cause disproportionately powerful feelings of fear and *paranoia* in a nightmare, to the point of nearing a frenzy. Indeed, the fic focuses on Twilight's anxious and (initially) exaggerated reactions more than the spooky phenomena themselves. Notably, there's this irrational and inescapable anxiety that conspicuously overpowers her better judgement, no matter what she tries to cope with. Something I think is critical is how Twilight repeats the same worries over and over. This could easily have been tedious for the audience, but it ends up creating an immersive feeling of helpless panic. In general, the way Twilight's mind is insidiously weakened sets this fic apart from those where a character merely "enters" a nightmare but otherwise keeps their wits about them. The main flaws with the fic were poor grammar and a lack of pony-ish terms e.g. there's a bit where Twilight "strongarmed herself". It was also confusing how the fic didn't initally clarify which floor of the library Twilight was on. While it wasn't anything better reading comprehension couldn't fix, it was still disruptive having to pause and reorient my picture of the library mid-story, and that's a fairly big issue when your story lives or dies on its atmosphere. There were more than a few comma splices, but you could (and I did) charitably write those off as the author giving Twilight's thoughts a rambling style. On the other hand, Spike being out of the library could have been good, but it was revealed so abruptly and also so obviously necessary for the story that it ended up feeling contrived.
>>42503197HAHAHAHHAHAHAHA
>>42503277I have apparently read this fic and upvoted it, but I have zero recollection of what it's about. I will re-read it and see what I think of it before I finish reading your post.

Anon, seated in the pilots chair, goes through the motions he has a thousand times, checking in and communicating with the ATC tower, giving a friendly wave through the window, as the lumbering beast makes its way onto the correct runway. It had taken a long time to explain the workings of terminal, the specifications for an airport, and how to properly perform pre-flight checks, but these ponies he's found himself surrounded by were smart, and all too eager to learn more about technology from his world. With a jerk, and a rumble, the machines below hitch forward and begin taking on higher and higher speeds. >"Woah Nelly, we're uh.. going fast" stammers the apple mare, a bead of sweat forming on her head.>"AHHH YEAH, C'MON, FASTER, FASTERRRRRRR" shouts Rainbow to the concern of some of the other passengers, all fear lost from her expression, now forming one of elation. >Fluttershy can do naught but meep, squeezing the air from Rarity who has begun turning a shade of purple matched only by her maneThe speed builds and builds, and just when it seems the run-way was about to run-out, the rumbling ceases, and the feeling of smooth ascension takes its place, as the plane angles upwards to caress that blue blue sky. >"WE DID IT!" Shouts Pinkie, a blast of confetti and streamers shooting from seemingly nowhere as she bounces up and down in her seat, "WE'RE FLYING!" >Twilight shakes her head free of her terrified expression and gives a nervous smile, and gives the pink mare a pat, "Yes, yes, and there was never any doubt, now please sit still, I don't think the stewardesses are too pleased with our yelling so early into the flight." After 15 minutes, the plane reaches a cruising altitude, Anon leans back in his seat with a smile, giving a nod to the his co-pilot stallion, Windy Gusts, who smiles back with only a hint of skittishness at experiencing the power of flight in something other than his Pegasus body first hoof. "Right, you're doing great Windy, excellent takeoff, but I wouldn't expect any less from somepony with flight experience like you." "T-thanks Anon, this is all rather new to me, but I took your training manuals seriously, and am seriously excited to do something as novel as this with someone as experienced as you." he says with a slight flushing of his face. >>42503547Another 15 minutes pass uneventfully, Windy humming a tune to himself as he goes over the operators manual, having become bored with the view already. The stewardesses have reported that everything has been going well with the passengers as well, barring the one incident of having to physically restrain Rainbow from coming into the cockpit to drill you with question after question. The sun has since set, and the stars gleam overhead, and that's when you see it- a patch of clouds up ahead. Right. On. The lights flicker once again. "Twi..?" mutters Applejack peering out into the now hazy window"It's nothing to worry about." Twilight murmurs at first before drawing herself upright, "Anon has years of experience with flying, I'm sure that-"Another rumble fills the cabin, a nearby foal begins to cry, though it could be just because Pinkie is now standing and making funny faces much to the grimacing of the mother.Another shake, this time much more violent, rocks the cabin pushing Pinkie back into her seat, which Twilight quickly takes advantage of, attaching the seatbelt to the pony with her magic. The intercom crackles to life again. "Good evening. This is your Captain," comes the voice of Anon, trailing off for a few moments, "We are about to attempt a crash landing."

"Captain says.. Put. Your head. On your knees.""Captain says.. Put your head in your hooves- put your hooves on your hips, aha ha ha.." >Meanwhile in the passenger cabin, Twilight begins focusing her magic, straining to encompass the plane in her magical aura attempting to stabilize it. Twi screams, "If you open the emergency door, the pressure would suck anypony not strapped in out and all the oxygen with it!" >"Then teleport me out! We have to do something!!" >Twilight looks outside the window and begins furiously scratching at her mane thinking through the calculations of her mind,>"Even if you could keep up with the speed of descent, there's no way we could make this thing weightless enough from in here to allow you to push it back upright. I need you and Fluttershy to go up and down the rows to make sure everypony is secured and okay." >Fluttershy cringes from her seat but nods, unbuckling and floating her way down the aisles.>"Rarity, we've got to try again, we might be able to slow down the descent to at least minimize the impact">They both nod and begin focusing their magic into their horns again. You are gripping the yoke with strain now, not that it's hard to bring a plane down, but getting it to just such an angle that it feels out of control. The smell of ammonia reaches your nostrils with a slight frown you look over at Windy, who has soiled his seat quietly sobbing at the sight of the ground coming into view past the cloud cover.A quick glance over your shoulder and you see there are now noticeable indents where Applejack's hooves have started bucking at the door. >"Ah-non, for Celestia's sake open this door! Thank you again for flying with Anon Airlines."The rest of the flight proceeds as normally as it did on take off, with a smooth landing and a hitch-free parking. The attendants at docking swiftly connect to the door and are perplexed to see Anon standing at the door. "Sir? It unlikely you as a human were going to avoid detection after what happened on that plane caught on with others, but that was a later problem. I had to double check to make sure it wasn't a PiE story, that's how off it is.
>>42503909>The show's quality slides after S2, when Genndy Tartakovsky moved on to do Samurai Jack and a different production team took over. It's sad that every cartoon is like this.

>/fimfic/ say fic is good>fic seems like it would be good>put off reading it because im a contrarian that thinks i know better and have better discernment>read fic>it’s very good
>>42504812Which fic?
>>42503277>>42503504Oh man I hate this one. Seer is a good horror writer, but this fic is fucking nothing. Nothing happens in this story, which is why the second anon probably doesn't remember it. This is not an exaggeration, nothing happens. There is no threat and no plot development. No need for it to be two separate chapters, either. There is only a bunch of suspense without a pay-off, and that gets old fast. Apparently a lot of people liked that, but it was incredibly boring for me. This is literally atmosphere for the sake of atmosphere. I prefer more substance in my horror.
>>42504983You may just be incapable of comprehending it.
>>42504999Only in a sense that it appeals to a specific fear scenario pretty alien to me. In my nightmares, if I feel dread and an ominous presence, I always choose fight over flight and try to find and confront the source of it (usually it ends with me finding nothing and a sense of dread getting so high that I just wake up with a racing heart). Point is, if I suspected the world around me turned into a black void, I would not hide in the corner whining like a bitch for 6k words, I would jump out the window and kill myself to get this over with.
>>42505051Sounds like you like the basic ability to empathize with characters. This is a known sign of autism.
>>42505103If I wrote an extra drawn-out story about a guy who lies in a puddle of shit and thinks about how horrible it is but never once tries to get out or do anything about it, would I get to call you autistic if you didn't relate to it?
>>42505138We get more than enough HiE already.
>>42494918>>42498075Oh, right, it was probably good to mention chapter splits; for some reason I read 20 as an odd number. Pay attention to chapter titles! 2/3 of the fic is titled 'Lost', and the prologue chapters are included in the count.Week 1: Chapters 1-11, inclusive of ch.11 (fourth 'Lost' in a row).Week 2: Chapters 12-22, ending with the last 'Lost' in its batch.Week 3: The rest, starting with Chapter 23, 'The Adventure'.

Does anybody happen to know of a fimfiction that involved Queen Chrysalis being fully turned into a pony (premise), being ravenously hungry (because she had never actually eaten before), and then being fed a peanut butter and jelly sandwich by a chef in Canterlot (I believe this occurred in the first chapter)?
>>42506466It was supposed to be in the hand lol. Like he is showing her FimFiction and it made her cry lol
