>>42404214>You are Captain Mizzen>It has been over fifteen minutes since the boarding party shoved off>Meanwhile you have been switching your monitoring back and forth between the team's progress and the surrounding space>And Speaker as he provides overwatch with his ship>Tied to this dead vessel, your corvette is extremely vulnerable>And while Speaker has cooperated fully so far, you still don't trust him>At least you have Sean's fellow Spartans on that battlecruiser>After witnessing Jane's performance at Shining and Cadence's wedding, you are sure that five of them can subdue the whole hive on that ship>You switch the hologram back to the colony>More heavy vehicle traffic is inbound to the raided settlement from the surrounding towns>At least the relief response is fast and thorough>You had to be the first and only response to a pirate raid quite a few times>Too few of those times you were able to catch up to the pirates>You hope you can catch these ones>You switch back to your own vessel and the one the away team is boarding>Just in time to see something blast out from where Sean's team is located"What was that?">An officer hesitates before answering,>"It looks like a door hatch, Captain. They must have breached the airlock.""I see. Well, if they're flinging them into space, let's keep an eye out for the second one-">"Captain, another ship has jumped into the system.">The officer's words make you stop and fling the view of the hologram out to the whole area around the planet>A new cluster of data points start forming up on the other side of the planet>Focusing on that and stripping away the pileup of data, you see the outline of an entirely new ship>While the ones you just fought were a mixture of stout and blocky shapes, this one is long and sleek>It accelerates from its jump at an impressive rate, gunning for what looks like a slingshot maneuver around the planet>"This is Speaker, moving to screen you, Captain.">You keep yourself from rolling your eyes>Oh, how thoughtful that he does not even wait for orders>The battlecruiser diverts from its loitering circle around you and stops in between you and where the new ship will careen around the planet"Any hails directed out way?">The officer in charge of the communication station consults her subordinates, then turns to you,>"Negative, Captain, but there appears to be traffic between the new contact and the colony.">Another officer speaks up,>"Captain, I've been analyzing the new ship and I believe this a Systems Alliance vessel if Spartan Sean's descriptions are accurate.">You nod at this>It would make sense for a human ship respond to a human colony’s distress>It will probably check the status of the colony and get their story before taking a look at your never-before-seen ships"Then we'll let them come to us,">You stare at the new contact"But why just one ship?"
>>42503473>No answer comes, so you consult your officers and come up with a new plan>Mere minutes after you finish you get a call,>"Nocturnal, this is Nine-Four.">You walk over to the nearest comms station and answer Sean,"Go ahead, Nine-Four.">"Nocturnal, we've secured the ship and have nine pirates in custody. Prepping them for transfer.""Understood, Nine-Four. Wait one.">You call Speaker, who picks up immediately,"Doppelganger, move alongside the pirate ship and prepare a hanger to receive the boarding party and prisoners. I will contact the Alliance ship to conduct negotiations.">"Understood, Nocturnal.">On the video screen for Doppelganger’s bridge, you see Henri point to Kaleb and Kate, and the three Gammas leave the command dais along with a dozen changlings>You cut the feed and switch back to Sean,"Nine-Four, plan bee. The Nocturnal and Doppelganger are changing positions. You will be taking the prisoners to Doppelganger.">"Understood. I was going to suggest that anyway. These guys are all Batarians. We'll remain in the ship until Doppelganger is in place. Be advised, the prisoners only have an hour of air.""We stand advised.">"Nine-Four out.">He doesn't ask why the ships are trading places, but then again he's busy with the platoon securing the prisoners>He and Nightmare Moon trust you to handle things>You turn to the pits"Helm, have us switch positions with Doppelganger. Comms, keep a watch for any signals that come our way.">Both stations give you an, "Aye, Captain."()()()>You are Henri>You, Kaleb, and Kate take your time navigating through the battlecruiser to get to the port hangar that Speaker had designated as the one he'll receive the boarding party at>Apparently the prisoners only have so much air left, but you're more worried about walking in on something the hive doesn't want you to see>None of the little bug ponies have made a move on you or your team yet, but your gut is telling you that it's only a matter of time>It's why you're keeping at least two people on the bridge at all times>When you enter the three-story hangar, you can see that the cloud of inky black that is Nightmare Moon is seconds away from the hangar>The local star is streaming into the vast space, casting stark shadows against the back walls>All of the changelings in the room are taking cover in said shadows>While the hangar's shields are blocking out the harmful radiation as well as keeping the atmosphere in, that star is making your anti-glare software kick in>The light is cut down to only artificial when Nightmare Moon's cloud passes the shield and starts to spread along it>On the stern side of the docking platform that bisects the rectangular room, the smog moves to reveal three large multicolored bubbles as they land on the lowermost deck>They pop one by one with a rush of mixing air
>>42503478>Each squad of the Equestrian marine platoon surrounds three black-bagged pirates, each with a unique yet equally dirty set of work clothes>Lots of leather, or at least synthetic analogues>All of them are shivering from spending hours at minimal life support>All of their wrists are bound behind their backs, and by the limited look of their hands you can tell that they're not human>Sean said they are Batarians, but you can only go off of your imagination and his single-sentence description buried in the dozens of other species descriptions of this galaxy>"Four-eyed bipeds that were falling out of the Council's favor due to their state-wide practice of slavery.">That knowledge is some six years old, so things could have changed, but if these guys are mere pirates then you probably don't have to worry about a Batarian navy on the offensive>You'll have to get more intel, but Hitomi would be more than happy to do that work once you gain access to the so-called extranet of this galaxy>The smog condenses on the shield, blocking the sunlight>You hear Nightmare Moon whisper over the battlecruiser's comm net,>"Kill the lights.">Now the whole hangar, which can service over a dozen pelican dropships, dips into darkness>You're not sure what the alicorn is planning, but Sean trusts her, so you do as well>Your low-light vision, along with infrared sensors in your helmet, let you see the marines, Spartans, and Shal silently retreat to the edges of the hangar, leaving the pirates in the middle of the now-dark hangar>Nightmare once again whispers into the comms,>"Speaker, enact plan: Nightmare Theater.">"Excuse me, Miss Moon, Nightmare Theater?">"Ask Hitomi. She will know.">You suppress a smirk>Only your intel specialist, obsessed with information above everything else, has read the absurdly long document Sean has been writing and rewriting in his suit since he first started his universe hopping>A number of unconventional solutions to unconventional problems, from the hopelessly serious to insultingly silly, he had brainstormed and even gamed out in dreams with Princess Luna and—later—Nightmare Moon>His inability to be surprised shined when you and Team Claymore ran into him over a year ago and he dragged your team along in the pursuit of that rogue Prophet>His advice to "don't overthink and just roll with it" has stuck with you ever since>So now you and Claymore are rolling with this plan>Hitomi begins by instructing changelings to mass up in the deck ways connected to the ground floor>You look up the plan yourself while you wait>Nightmare Theater is actually the first "big" plan on the list>It has a general objective, along with its own volume of variants and contingencies>There are even some after action reports authored by Sean and the moon alicorns, which you decide to read later>Hitomi speaks faster, gaining back your attention,
>>42503485>"Claymore, Nine-Four, One-oh-Three, get set to shadow the pirates. The marines are to bypass and secure critical systems. Nightmare, on your mark.">You look over at the blind and cuffed Batarians>Left alone, they are talking to each other, trying to gather together while blind>Even with the language barrier, you can tell that they are frightened>With IR illumination to allow your night vision to see in the dark chamber, you watch the aliens shuffle towards the center of the smooth purple floor>You spot something above them>A large tendril of smog drifting downwards from high above>You are reminded of an old time lapse vid from earth, where the underside of an arctic ice flow extends a shaft of frozen water down to an ocean floor populated by starfish>The opaque smoke sparkles in the sickly green of your helmet's IR light as it lowers closer to the black-bagged heads of the prisoners>The talking gets louder>Their movements become erratic>Then you feel an acute cold trickle down your spine>You almost snap around, but hold>It's Nightmare Moon's aura>No one, not even herself, knows how it works or how to turn it off>Yet when she wills it, she can expand it and intensify it>From how your instincts are insisting that a grizzly death is fast approaching, that girl is throwing all of the dials as far as they can go>The pillar of smoke continues to descend above the cluster of Batarians' heads>Suddenly, nine individual tendrils shoot out from the pillar, arching down>They all grab a black bag and pluck it off of the pirate's head>You see their faces>Two sets of two black eyes, one over the other>No nose, just segmented plates of cartilage>Sharp teeth>The pirates snap their heads around, then back away from the suddenly twinkling pillar of smog>It drops into the middle of them with a surge of tiny stars giving them something to look at>Silent, the nine of them slowly back away from the column of light>The lights stop twinkling, then disappear entirely>On the other side of the smog, the Batarian closest to the hangar door pauses and squints his four eyes>In you ear, Nightmare Moon whispers,>"Go.">Nightmare Moon shows the alien something that makes him scream>Then a giant horse's mouth opens out from the smog and snaps down on the pirate>Two of the eight don't run immediately and instead watch, stunned as a massive equine face turns toward them>The muffled screams of the half-eaten one is cut off when Nightmare chomps down and swallows>One of them finally turns and runs straight towards your position>The other simply topples over backwards, the back of his head bouncing on the deck with a meaty thump
>>42503490>The retreating screams and cacophony of boots and hooves on the deck fade away as you focus on the Batarian running at you>Even with his hands tied behind his back, he sprints full-tilt in the darkness, unaware that he'll run face-first into a wall>You'd rather he not kill himself like that, so you step out to stand just beside his path>Arm outstretched, you grab him and spin him back around>The Batarian stops and tries to look at you, but you had activated your suit's photoreative panels>In this darkness, he cannot see you>Bellowing out a string of curses, he lunges forward, then to one side, but you hold firm of him>Aquamarine spotlights burst into existence and shine down on the two of you>You both look up to see Nightmare's eyes staring at you, only they are many times larger than normal>That equine mouth smiles with glowing, bloodstained square teeth>Smog creeps out from underneath her and consumes the supine form of the fainted pirate>Inspiration hits you>You take one hand and grab your Batarian's cuffs and the back of his waist belt, then grab the back of his hairless head with your other>You lift him bodily up towards Nightmare>When she starts gliding towards you, his curses turn into desperate pleading>To who, you're not sure>Her smile becomes wider and wider, splitting up to beyond her eyes>The pirate thrashes about in your hold and kicks back, but your augmented strength is more than enough to lock him in place>When she stops just in front of you, she opens her mouth>Behind the buck teeth are rows and rows of shark's teeth, canines, an octopus's beak, a snake's fangs>She lets him give out one long scream before snapping down on both of you>You're not crushed, but enveloped in black with Nightmare's cyan magic flowing around you>Your still-screaming pirate is yanked out of your grasp>Her magic recedes from you and the smog is pulled back>If it weren't for your helmet anti-glare, the system's sun would have blinded you>Nightmare Moon, back to her normal proportions, smiles at you as she levitates three clumps of smog above the hangar's floor>"Thank you for the offering, Henri.">You shrug, then look around the now-empty space while ignoring your alert sixth sense>Comm traffic is busy with teams reporting the pirates' positions and Hitomi coordinating to herd them towards the holding cells>You point to the three man-sized clouds, two of which are still writhing"Can they hear us?">She shakes her head,>"Even without a sound barrier, they're too busy with the feeling of being eaten alive to think about what we are saying.">The wording makes you pause,"You mean you aren't actually eating them?">She inhales deeply, chin up>"I do not eat pirates, my dear Spartan.">Her smile becomes mischievous,>"Misbehaving fillies, though? I will neither confirm or deny.""Right."()()()https://ponepaste.org/11243I just really, REALLY wanted an excuse for Moony to go ape shit.

what is it with moonfags and dark type shit? I mean yea dark type pone but doesn't need to necessarily be dark type fantasy.
>>42510725I'd say it's more the fandom in general has a tendency to put Luna in those grimdark scenarios than just us moonfags. In this specific case it's due to the popularity of LoonyLuna in the early fandom (and a long running tumblr blog with that version of her) that spawned a shitload of art. It's like asking why moonfags love Gamer Luna so much - many of us don't, but the trend more or less still lives in the fandom, so we still get art of her.
>>42510742oh, yeah, i forgot. same as ask celestia or so. forgot this time/phase existed and had such influence desu...
>>42510725Don't know. But none of my imagination about Luna is dark fantasy or grimdark. Maybe she draws upon the darker forces of nature; but that is dark as in being the opposite of light rather than dark as evil.
>>42510725Because the night = dark = oooh scary and edgy gothic shit. As a moonfag who likes horror, it kind of suits her, but only when done explicitly right which has been rare. As for Askloona, I think Moonbutt being put on the moon was more of a reason for such a thing, given the creativity it offers.

This pic made me feel feelings.... a lot
>>42516462Beautiful, serene picture. What memories does she have from the beach or from the sea?As I was trying to answer this myself, being retarded as usual, I began to wonder what are the hardships of alicorns. There was this thing in storytelling that characters are shaped by their flaws and limitations, IIRC, even just as simple as being mortal means having limited time to live a life, so driven by other character traits they will do specific decisions. I could imagine a bit more easily an earth pony living deep in the continent, whose lifelong dream was to see the sea she only heard about beforehoof. Not enough funds, family to take care of (she loves them deeply but you know), no time. Finally, with help of somepony else she goes on a journey of her life.Alicorns and princesses at that, it seems like not even sky's the limit for them. What problems do they face? Losing mortal friends, for sure, but are there less grim issues that do matter to them? Maybe I'm dumb, but it appears as if them caring about little things like above doesn't suit them that much. Like stories about them need to be filled with some grandiose, unless it's a generic "AAAAA I WANT TO HUG HER SO MUCH PET HER WITHERS SMELL HER STARFILLED MANE FEEL HER VELVETY HOOVES AROUND MY NECK AND WINGS BRUSHING AGAINST MY BACK" kind of thing. Which I still appreciate very, very much, but it just feels... like not giving her the finessed understanding she deserves, she precisely as Luna, the alicorn princess of the night.

Sink carrier with clunky RTS controls. Switch to 1st person of a small group of swimmers that infiltrate a front hatch leading to fancy living quarters. Fight through. Ship much larger on the inside.
>>42510725Because edgy sad moody suicidal Luna is based
>>42510725For me, the darker aspects of her is what made me so drawn to her in the first place and the fandoms makings of it made me love her even more. In a land of mostly sunshine and joy she's one of the only ones we've seen that truly had it rough. Im pretty sure losing your sister and being stuck for 1000 years hits alot worse in the head than whats usually said and Luna Eclipse really showed just how difficult it must be for her to come back to a society who grew without her. And yet despite that she still grew past those hurdles and became something better, Watching her push through and make something out of that pain(sometimes literally) gives me genuine hope when going thorugh my own problems, it feels like every single thing I go through gets easier knowing she'd smile everytime I push through it, I have a feeling she'd at least appreciate it. I really just wanna be there for her and have her be there for me so bad

>>42516872Ok first of all>beforehoofWas not a word i expected to learn today kek, but i like itBut realy... you know.... I think it lika makes sense. They are princesses, they need to be rulers, show grace. There is little room for much emotions... Thats why I think they realy would appreciate if I took Luna or Tia just for a day on a beach, or on a walk thru the forest, or idk, bake a cake together?>Alicorns and princesses at that, it seems like not even sky's the limit for them.Thats the thing, they go round high classy ponies, but I believe that they realy miss the simple thing, the calm everydays things that their little ponies can enjoy. They both need some love, and someone to brake the routine. They need to be randomly taken for an evening walk, to eat a snach out in the town, encouraged to take a flight aroud the mountains...

I'm not sure it fully helps me wrap my head around what would be a good story for her, but it's still something. It just seems too... easy, you know? To pretend like bringing everyday things to her would be entertaining, interesting for her. You've got a point, but on the other hoof, eh. I should be able to give her more.

Hey /Moon/ im trying to design a dress for season 1 luna like shes at the gala, and i could do with inspiration post art of luna in fancy outfits
>>42546769I'd always prefer black on her, but this one is really pretty.
>>42547005I dont hate this design, but the mane colours are kinda lazy. Its just her normal mane colours without the sky effect. Should've just made her mane one shade of pink. Maybe also given her a slightly smaller snout, just to differentiate her a bit better. This nose feels a bit too long for celestia.

>>42549255ooh thats pretty, i can use this and the others for reference. thanks anon
>>42549264A simpler, almost black dress, one that always suits mares so well (cue that Rainbow flying downwards pic), but with a gentle touch of the night sky on the left. And a whole-ass moon on the right, which feels a bit out of place for me.

I guess I was afraid that I would change my mind, or that a waifu was something far more grand than what I actually had, that I would be throwing the term around without respect for its meaning. The truth is though, some part of me has always known. Luna has always been my favorite. No other pony makes me feel the way she does, nor does any character from any other work of fiction. She strikes this special chord with me that I struggle to explain in words. I have such admiration for her. She makes me happy and I just want to make her feel the same way that she makes me feel. Why can't she be real, bros?

>>42557659im drawing her sitting down, Proportions to me look wonky for now
>>42557633>Luna's buildLean and strong, while still having an abundance of sexy curves. As the other Anon said, she has a martial physicality to her. Basically, you can see from her build that she is formidable in a fight, but all that formidable structure is contained in a feminine alicorn form. I actually think of Luna and Celestia having similar builds and being essentially the same size (no, I don't subscribe to gigantic Celestia butt theory). It just comforts with my headcanon that Luna and Celestia are basically opposite poles of universal duality. So, same power and similar build. But, beautiful in different ways and having different characters.
>>42558396>muscularI think I gave her a giant butt by accident, but I wouldn't call it hyper

The sisters were having a friendly war like one would have in a sleepover with the other ponies taking sides. I sided with Luna, but I was also being a mediator of sorts if things got too heated. The dream I had after that was unrelated, but I did pull a phone out and had pictures of Luna on it (some lewd, some cute).I don't remember specific dialogues with the ponies, but that's normal for me.

I feel like Luna is particularly well suited to deal with villians like this guy. Both draw their power from the darkness and shadow, but Luna is good and her darkness is pure and clean. Thus, she is more powerful. Also, as a denizen of the dark, Luna knows the strengths and weaknesses of other such beings; she knows how to deal with them. Thoughts?
>>42562373She just uses her sacred moonlight to banish gay demons.

>>42557216That is respectable, anon. I hope you can stay true to her, she's a great pony.I think I went through the same stuff but in opposite direction. A couple years ago I was more confident she would be my "waifu", but some time later I started to have doubts for whatever reason. There's no other pony I could get to subconsciously like as much as her, I still treat /moon/ as my poni home. I just don't want to think I was bored with her, or that I'm feeling something just as atrocious.Maybe it's not love, but other kind of appreciation that I've simply mislabeled early.

>The wind howled as it swept across the balcony, bringing with it a chill that you barely felt, even as the rain seeped through the robe wrapped around your shoulders.>It was almost comforting, and if nothing else, it was a reminder that you were still alive.>You still weren't quite sure how you felt about that honestly.>Sometimes you felt like you were making real progress. That maybe, your knowledge of a world untouched by chaos could somehow make the difference in this one.>That's what Star Swirl seemed to believe anyway.>But most times? You just felt empty.>Taking in a deep breath, you turned your gaze to the horizon.>The rolling clouds of the maelstrom smothered the sky in a magenta haze, stretching endlessly in every direction as far as the eye could see.>It was crazy to think that you hadn't seen sunlight in...>Weeks? No... that couldn't be right.>Either way, you'd been here long enough to know that time had lost all meaning.>It made you wonder, about how ordinary things had been.>How much you missed it.>Ultimately?>You just wanted things to be normal again...
>>42564171>The sound of the door opening behind you snapped you out of your thoughts, as the balcony was bathed in a fiery gold, broken only by the long shadow cast along the stone floor.>The rhythmic clopping of hooves approached you, as the doors closed with an echoing thud. Plunging the balcony back into a dim gloom.>You glanced over your shoulder to see Luna, who stopped mid-step as your eyes met hers.>"Hello...">She spoke softly, her voice carrying a hesitance that you hadn't known since your first meeting."Um, hey...">Luna shifted slightly, her gaze drifting towards the ground before returning to you.>"I'm not intruding, am I?">This was new... she never sought you out - unless Star Swirl forced her to that is."No, no it's fine - I was just... thinking.">Luna moved closer, stopping by the balcony's edge. Scanning the horizon as she took in the sight of the scarlet sky.>The wind caught her mane, the rapidly dampening strands of sapphire whipping around her face.>Even in the dull light, her blue coat was striking, the contrast to the maelstrom's shifting hues making her appear almost ethereal.>Her eyes were a brilliant teal, which shimmered with an iridescence matched only by her sister.>Eyes which were now, staring back at you.>"Thinking of home?">You quickly shifted your gaze back to the horizon, focusing on nothing in particular. But you could still feel her gaze burning into you.>Was it really that obvious?>You hadn't exactly been hiding it, though it felt weird to be called out."Something like that, yeah.">For a moment, Luna was silent - though out of the corner of your eye you could see her turn back to the horizon.>"I can't say I know what that's like... I never had a home. Not really.">That caught your attention, as you turned back to look at her.>She didn't so much as glance your way, her expression a strange mix of longing and another emotion you couldn't quite place.>"My sister and I. We're not from here - at least, not in the way others are, and I think in that way, we have something in common.">You could tell that there was so much more behind those words, their past was just as much of a mystery to you as your own was to them.>You were both outsiders, albeit in different ways."I mean, I guess that's one way of looking at it. But I think you're still better off than me.">Luna's eyes flicked towards you once again, her brow furrowing slightly in what looked like confusion or perhaps even concern.>"How so?""Well, you have your sister for one, and a whole future ahead of you - you have a purpose. But me? I'm a nobody.">She seemed to pause at that, she and Celestia were the key to ending all this.>You needed them to succeed.>They had to, for everyone's sake.>For your sake.>Was it selfish? >Absolutely.>But a world ruled by chaos, was no place to live - for anything.
>>42564186>"Sometimes... I wonder if having such a destiny is worth the burden that comes with it.">Her voice was quiet, barely above a whisper and her eyes fell to the stone beneath her hooves."You don't believe in destiny?">"My sister embraces it. She sees the path ahead laid out before us as something necessary, something that we must do for the good of everyone.">As if sensing her own doubts, she quickly corrected herself.>"And she's right! But that's not because it's our destiny, it's just the right thing to do.">It sounded more like she was trying to convince herself, rather than you.>But then again, could you really blame her?>You'd been so consumed with the idea of getting your own life back, that you'd never stopped to think about what this meant for them.>They were barely even adults - younger than you were even, but at least you had a life before this.>You decided to choose your next words carefully."Destiny... isn't always a bad thing, you know?">"How could it be? A destiny like ours can only mean good things for Equestria.""So what's the problem?">"Shouldn't this make me happy?">It wasn't clear if she was asking at all but the question hung in the air regardless."I don't really know Luna, destiny isn't really a thing where I'm from... at least, not the same way it is here. Maybe you just don't like the idea of not being in control of your life.">The moment lingered as she mulled over your words.>Turning her head, she slowly met your gaze and for once, looked at you with something other than indifference.>"Is that how, you feel?">There was a disarming sincerity in her voice, sounding both vulnerable and hopeful all at once.>You found yourself nodding, almost without thinking and felt oddly lighter for it.>Judging from the quiet sigh that escaped Luna, you weren't the only one.>You'd been pretending for so long, that you'd forgotten what it was like to be open with someone.>It was nice.
>>42564190>A low rumble of thunder echoed in the distance, killing the moment as the world was bathed in a flash of magenta light.>The sky tore open, revealing the arcane energies that twisted and writhed above the clouds.>Glancing at each other, you both took the cue to head back inside.>As the door closed behind you, the cloistered halls of the castle reminded you of just how small your world had become.>Wordlessly, you both began making your way through the castle, the silence punctuated by Luna's steps.>Though her persistent glances in your direction made it hard to ignore the questions swirling in your mind."I'm guessing you haven't told Celestia?">You asked, attempting to stay as casual as possible.>Luna didn't answer right away, her mane hanging limply over her face as she shook her head.>Interesting.>You figured she would have spoken to Celestia first, but that only fuelled your confusion more."Not that I'm ungrateful or anything but, why me?">She took her time, giving it some thought before answering.>"I just needed to tell someone. I hope that's alright?">The truth was, she didn't have anyone else to talk to - not really.>You might have all lived in the castle but you'd been isolated from the rest of its inhabitants.>It was for their safety but it was still pretty lonely.>So yeah, you could relate."It's fine, don't worry about me telling anyone. Besides, who am I gonna tell right?">You tried your best to sound light-hearted but it only seemed to sullen her mood."But seriously though, I won't say anything if you don't - I promise.">Luna lifted her head, the faintest smile appearing on her muzzle.>A few moments passed as you continued walking, before Luna spoke up again.>"Where are we going?""Star Swirl wanted me to explain some diagrams I made. Probably'll take a while...">She perked up at the mention of her mentor. Though said nothing, instead offering a quiet hum of acknowledgement.>The two of you settled into a comfortable silence, winding your way through the dimly lit corridors.>Even as the door to his study came into view, Luna made no effort to leave.>Stopping in front of the door, you moved to knock but stopped yourself.>Turning to her, she looked at you questioningly."You can go, if you want? It's fine.">"Do you want me to leave?">You looked back at your still-raised hand for a second."Not really."
>>42564194>Knocking on the door, you waited as the muffled voice of Star Swirl called from inside.>"Enter.">Pushing the door open, you stepped into the midst of Star Swirl's research.>Books and scrolls littered every available surface: magical theorems and treatises which were withered from centuries of neglect.>Star Swirl sat with his back to you, hunched over a desk as he scratched away at a piece of parchment.>You moved through the mess with a practised ease, careful not to disturb the carnage as Luna awkwardly picked her way behind you.>He barely glanced at you as you entered his field of view.>"Finally found time for me I see...">His tone was sharp, not even bothering to hide his annoyance as he dipped his quill."Well - you know, I just wanted to run over things myself first. Didn't want to make a mistake.">His icy-blue eyes flicked up from the parchment, side-eyeing you with a look that cut right through you.>With a mild grunt he turned back to his writings, pausing only briefly to pull out your creased sketches from the carnage spread before him.>"Time that would've been better spent with me, but at least now we can - ">A sudden avalanche of papers from behind made him startle, cutting off his sentence.>Both of you turned to see Luna being showered with priceless manuscripts, wincing slightly as they bounced off her head.>"Sorry...">She mumbled sheepishly, causing a weary sigh to escape Star Swirl.>He lowered his head in what had long become a practised move, the bells on his hat jingling softly.>"I take it there's a reason for your being here?""She's with me.">He glanced between the two of you but seemingly brushed it off as he turned back to your diagrams.>An assortment of various models of the solar system and the lunar cycle.>Helio-centric, geo-centric - even half-remembered religious explanations of celestial motion and the lunar cycle.>To you, they were nothing out of the ordinary.>But to him? They were what he'd spent his entire life searching for.>Whether they actually meant something here though, was debatable.>For now at least, it kept a roof over your head.>"If this is the way of things in your world, then where did they come from? Surely there is more?""Well no one actually really knows for sure where they came from, not for certain anyway. Just that they've been there from the beginning.">You hated giving him answers like that.>Not just because it was unhelpful, but because it revealed just how little you actually knew.>The moment he realized that, would be the moment you outlived your usefulness.
>>42564198>Star Swirl stroked through the brown hairs of his beard and Luna made herself known by leaning over his shoulder.>Despite her name, she had no insight into celestial mechanics but judging by the look on her face, she was still fascinated by your ideas. Even if she didn't understand them.>What was even weirder was that neither she or Celestia had their marks.>Which according to Star Swirl, meant they had yet to discover their destiny.>A destiny they knew nothing about.>But they were special, being both alicorns and named as they were, it only made sense that their destiny lay with the heavens.>"How come there's so many different ways?">Luna asked, looking between your sketches and Star Swirl's notes."My people like to understand things... even if we have to come up with the answer ourselves.">Star Swirl quirked his brow at that, turning to face you properly.>"So what you mean to say is - you don't actually know.""Hey - you wanted me to tell you what the possibilities were and that's what I did. And also, why would it work the same way here?>That seemed to placate him, though it was clear he still wasn't satisfied.>"Even with these... ideas, Discord has spent centuries hunting down what little knowledge remains of the celestial arts.">The pause that followed was uneasy, the subject of Discord was something which he often avoided.>When he did bring it up, it was with equal parts fear and anger. A bitterness that had clearly consumed him for a long time."If there's nothing left, then how do you even know what you're looking for?">"Unicorns like me - are able to sense that something is missing. We know that our magic is made for a world that should be, but no longer is.">You were about to ask what he meant but Luna beat you to it.>"Then why do me and Celestia not feel that way?">"Because neither of you have your marks yet, if you did, then you would know that your calling is being denied to you.">She fell silent, tilting her head downward as if deep in thought."This is gonna sound stupid but - why can't you just make something new?">Both of them turned to you, with Star Swirl looking like you'd just slapped him in the face.>"A ritual even /approaching/ the scale of any of these would be... Impractical, at best. The calculations alone would take hundreds of years.">You were afraid he was going to say something like that...>None of you could afford to wait that long nor did you want to.>There had to be another way, there just had to.
>>42564200>The moment was cut short as the doors to the study flew open, sending papers flying everywhere.>"There you are!">You barely had time to react as a white blur sailed passed you, colliding with Luna in an embrace.>"Where've you been? I looked everywhere!">Celestia, the older of the two sisters, was equally striking.>Her snow-white coat practically glowed in the amber light of the study, while her mane - a burnt burgundy, flowed over the robes that covered her frame.>"I'm okay sister. You don't have to worry about me.">That elicited a brief chuckle from Celestia, as she finally broke away.>"It's my job to worry about you, that's what I'm here for.">Turning to both you and Star Swirl, her amethyst eyes lingered on you for a moment before switching her focus to her mentor, who was rather unimpressed with her entrance.>"Must you always insist on barging in unannounced? Honestly...">"Well, it's not like you're doing anything important.">You swear you saw his eye twitch at that, and you couldn't help but smirk a little.>Though his sigh of resignation was heavy.>"Clearly... but since you're happy that your sister is safe and sound, I suggest you run along.">He turned away from her and Celestia narrowed her eyes as she looked to Luna, who looked between all three of you with uncertainty.>Looking to the ground, Celestia seemed to weigh her options before looking back to her mentor.>"No."
>>42564206>His quill stopped mid-stroke as he seemed to double take.>"What did you say?">"I said, no. I'm not going back to doing nothing. So - I wanna go explore the castle.">You shared a look with Luna, who looked equally surprised by her sister's boldness.>"You know full well why I can't allow that - It's too dangerous.">"I can handle myself.">There was a inherent smugness to her tone which only served to irritate Star Swirl further.>"Listen! There are others here in the castle who -">"No you listen! I'm tired of sitting around, waiting for something to happen! If they find out about us, then so what? That's a good thing!">"No it isn't! You don't know what I know, and I promise you - castle politics are not something either of you want to be a part of.">That only intrigued Celestia more but Luna finally decided to step in.>"Sister, maybe we should just - ">"No Luna - don't you see? He hasn't done us any good keeping us here. How are we meant to help anyone if we don't even know what's going on?">Star Swirl's boiled over, slamming his hooves on the desk which made all three of you jump.
>>42564213>"Done you any good!? You - insolent, little brat! Who do you think has been keeping you fed? Keeping you safe? Do you think that was easy?">Celestia recoiled under the punctuation of his words, her ears flattening against her head as her confidence crumbled.>Though he wasn't finished, pre-emptively raising his hoof to silence her inevitable comeback.>"You - have NO idea what I've been through for your sake. I've risked everything for you even BE here, and for what? So you can throw it back in my face?">"N-No, I just -">Against your better judgement, you decided to intervene - hoping to deescalate the situation."I'm sure that's not what she meant - ">He rounded on you, forcing you back a step.>"And what do you know!? This doesn't concern you, so stay out of it!""Easy! All I'm saying is - maybe exploring the castle, isn't such a bad idea? It might be good for them.">The tension in the air was suffocating as he met your gaze, the two of you engaged in an uneasy standoff.>"You do not get to decide what's best for them...">He narrowed his eyes at you, the words were laced with venom."I get that - but you could at least explain /why/ they're not allowed? Right?">That might've been the longest few seconds of your life but eventually, he did relent.>Turning his attention back to the sisters, Star Swirl lowered his head - closing his eyes for a moment as let his anger subside.>"Canterlot is home to some of the most brilliant arcane minds in Equestria, but it's also home to many who would rather use you for their own gain. I called in every favour I had just to keep you here but even then, they /know/ I'm hiding something. That's why I - ">"If it's so dangerous for us, then why bring us here?">Luna's question stopped him in his tracks and for the first time since you'd known him - Star Swirl hesitated.>"Your destinies are the key to unlocking my own. If that means I need to keep you here to do that, then I will - with or without your blessing."
>>42564216>The sisters exchanged a wary look, their expressions mirroring each other's realization.>Tentatively, Celestia spoke up.>"So - you're just, using us?">"Yes.">Something about the flatness of his answer seemed to shock them more than the admission itself.>"Then - then we /should/ leave!">"No, you shouldn't.">The hint of warning in his tone was clear, though Celestia pressed on.>"And why's that?">"Without me, you have nothing and here - you have all the knowledge you could ever need. If you truly want to make a difference, then you need me as much as I need you.">While it wasn't exactly reassuring, he did have a point.>Though there was another question that had been gnawing at you since you came here."What about me? Where do I fit in all this?">All eyes turned to you but Star Swirl was the only one to answer.>"You are here because you have knowledge I need, so as long as that knowledge remains useful, you can stay. Otherwise...">He didn't finish, letting the implication hang in the air."Right, yeah.">The moment lingered, the room's atmosphere heavy with the weight of unspoken tension.>Eventually, Celestia broke the silence.>"Then why can't we explore the castle, if there's things here that could help us, then you should let us.">Star Swirl sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose with a hoof."Now hold on a minute, I think they really could explore the castle.">The look he shot you was nothing short of incredulous."No really, Remember how hard it was for you to get me into the castle?">"How could I forget...?""So, if I go with them, then no one will go anywhere near us, right?">Celestia practically lit up with excitement, while Luna still looked unsure.>"That's brilliant! Why didn't I think of that? Oh, you /have/ to let us go now - please?">He looked between the three of you and, to your surprise, actually seemed to consider it.>"Fine, you can go - ">"Yes!">"But - you can't go by yourselves. Instead, Clover will accompany you.">Celestia's short-lived celebration died but Luna took the moment to ask for all of you.>"Who's Clover?">"My apprentice..."
>>42564222>After what was a long and exhaustive lecture on the rules of engagement with the others of the castle, the three of you stood before the towering, ornate door that sealed you off from the rest of the castle's inhabitants.>Celestia slowly reached for the handle, seemingly drawn to it like a moth to a flame."Don't.">Withdrawing her hoof, Celestia turned to you with a questioning glance.>"Why?""Because, you don't want to ruin it for yourself - just be patient.">She rolled her eyes with a huff but did as she was told.>Luna moved closer to her sister and they began whispering between themselves.>You did your best not to eavesdrop but the cavernous silence of the hall made it difficult not to.>Somewhere in there, your name was being tossed around as they occasionally glanced in your direction.>Eventually, Luna broke away and approached you.>"I, I mean - /we/ just wanted to say... thank you. This means a lot to us.""Oh uhm, no problem. Glad I could help.">She smiled softly at you with a warmth that offset the gloomy atmosphere of the hall.>But as quickly as it appeared, it faded, her expression shifting to one of quiet concern as she glanced back over to Celestia.>"Do you... think we can trust him? Star Swirl I mean.">You grimaced at the question."Eh... Well, I'm not sure. I mean, he's right about needing his help but I don't think he means you any harm.">"What makes you say that?""Why go through all this trouble just to hurt you? He needs your help - just like I do.">Celestia's ear twitched as she cocked her head slightly.>"So what - you agree with him?">She eyed you with suspicion, her brow furrowed as she stepped closer."I didn't say that - all I'm saying is, he could've easily just lied to your face but he didn't.">"I still don't like it...""How do you think I feel!? Soon as he's finished with me, I'm screwed.">You tried to mask the slight panic in your voice but from the way the sisters shared a worried glance, you weren't exactly subtle.>Luna meekly nodded under Celestia's stern gaze, before Celestia turned her attention back to you.>"Then maybe we can help each other?"
>>42564226>Her melodic tone made the offer sound far from innocent."What did you have in mind?">"If everything we need is here, then why play by his rules? I promise, If we do things my way, we can find what we need without him and you can stay here for as long as you like.">Luna had the same worried look you had, this was already sounding like a bad idea.>"Sister, I don't know about this...">Celestia dismissed her sister's concerns with a quiet tut as she turned to face her.>"Come on Luna, this is our chance to do things our way! Plus, Anonymous could really use our help.">Luna cast a nervous glance at you before Celestia focused her attention on you once more.>"What do you say?">Her charisma was almost frightening, though this 'plan' didn't exactly fill you with confidence.>But there was a certain appeal, a desperate one, that came from the stability that she was offering."Alright, I'm in...">Celestia beamed at your response and you could already see the glimmer of mischief in her eyes."But if this is going to work, then we need to be play it safe, find out what we can first and go from there. Sound good?">You slowly offered your hand to her, to which she eyed with suspicion before looking back to you.>"What are you doing?">"Huh? Oh, It's uh, it's called a handshake - it's a way to make a deal where I'm from. Give me your hoof.">Wary, but curious she raised her hoof which you then clasped your fingers around the best you could.>"Huh... That's twice you've come up with a good idea, let's do that.">You weren't sure if that was meant to be a compliment, but you took it in stride.
>>42564232>Just in time as well, since the door began to groan ominously as it swung inward.>Stepping into the hall was a stallion, dressed in a turquoise robe that was more patches than original fabric.>His sand-coloured coat and dishevelled brown mane gave him a very unassuming appearance, not helped by the faded green cloak that was more patches than original fabric.>Save for the deep green of his eyes which held a quiet intelligence.>He gave all three of you a once over before speaking, his voice a subtle blend of confidence and caution.>"Interesting... you're not quite what I expected.""Clover, I'm guessing?">He nodded curtly as he looked between the sisters with a furrowed expression, before settling back on you.>"You can talk? That's... surprisingly convenient.">You raised your eyebrows at that.>Though he was quick to clarify as his attention slowly drifted from you, to the sisters.>"Oh please - don't flatter yourself. Star Swirl wasn't exactly subtle bringing you into the castle...">He proceeded to circle around Luna and Celestia, his expression shifting from mild interest to complete fascination.>"And who might you be? You must forgive me but - my master was very... light, on the details.">"I'm Celestia, this is my sister, Luna.">Clover smiled pleasantly at the two of them, though it felt... forced.>"Charmed. Really...">From the way the sisters were standing, they weren't sure what to make of him either.>They both bristled slightly under his analyzing gaze.>Luna made the first move, quietly dispelling the tension with a slight cough.>"Um, Star Swirl said you'd show us around the castle?">"Well, I certainly could but where do /you/ wish to go, my lady?">The playful sarcasm that laced his words was irritatingly effective as Luna glanced to her sister for help.>"The library.">His eyes flicked to Celestia like a viper, though his cordial demeanor remained as he took a step closer to her.>"A fellow scholar, I see. Unless - you've never been there before?">He punctuated the question with a knowing smile, practically daring her to deny it.>"What's it to you?">He chuckled dryly, seemingly unbothered by her tone."Something funny?"
>>42564240>His rehearsed laughter faded as he turned to you.>"Nothing - I just find it amusing that my master decided that /these/ two were more worthy of his time than me.">That... explained a few things.>Luna's voice piped up from beside him, though he kept his eyes fixed on you.>"Star Swirl said you're his apprentice?">She asked hesitantly and from the speed at which his head turned to look at her, instantly regretted it.>"Former - apprentice, more like! That sanctimonious old mule was never satisfied with anything I did! But perfectly happy to dote over his newest pet projects... Isn't he?">Luna shrunk under the weight of his sudden outburst, his muzzle mere inches from hers.>Celestia looked about ready to pounce when he suddenly composed himself, taking a step back as he forced a smile once again.>"But all is forgiven. After all, who am I to question, the brilliance of Star Swirl the Bearded?">You and the sisters shared a wary glance and you briefly considered calling the whole thing off.>But you needed this, you all did.>He turned and strode through the open doorway, calling back over his shoulder as he went.>"The library, was it? Then please, right this way..."
>>42564247>The three of you followed him through the winding halls, the dark stone paired with high vaulted ceilings gave the otherwise lively corridors an oppressive atmosphere.>A feeling that was only amplified by the countless stares and whispers from the unicorns you passed.>But they did keep their distance, just as you'd hoped.>They would stop whatever they were doing and watch you, only resuming when they were sure they were out of sight.>It was unsettling but Clover paid them no mind, even as they parted like the sea before him.>Some of the stares lingered on the sisters, who were scanning the unfamiliar surroundings with a mixture of awe and unease.>Their robes concealed their wings well enough but this whole enterprise was one wrong move away from discovery.>They murmured amongst themselves, in what looked to be a quiet debate before Celestia trotted ahead to walk alongside Clover.>He indulged her hushed questions, though what they were saying was anyone's guess.>You matched your pace to Luna's, who was also watching her sister from afar.>You leaned down slightly and began to whisper."What did she say?">Luna struggled to pull her gaze from the pair before glancing at you.>"She's trying to get to know him, I think..."She spoke softly, keeping her voice low."And what about you?">"What about me?""Well, are you okay?">She actually turned to look at you, before checking her surroundings and leaning in closer.>"I don't like him...">You and her both."We just need to stick with it for now - I don't trust him any more than you do but we need his help.">"I know... but why would Star Swirl send him with us if he's so angry?">That thought had crossed your mind as well - surely he must've known?"I don't know...">You both drifted into silence, watching as Celestia talked to Clover with a hushed but animated fervour.>That girl could definitely turn on the charm, but whether it was working, or he was merely humouring her was hard to tell.>Every so often he would glance back at you, if only for a split second.>it could have just been to check on you - that made sense, but it felt almost too deliberate.>You just really hoped Celestia knew what she was doing...
>>42564252>Eventually, you came to a large atrium with stained glass windows stretching all the way to the ceiling.>A monolithic door sat on the far end, its two halves pushed inward to reveal the vast expanse of the library beyond.>Even from here, you could hear the bustling activity within as you approached, the streaks of magenta washing over you as you passed under the towering arches.>You were almost looking forward to it, if only to finally have the chance to learn some things for yourself.>But that changed the second you walked through the doors.>It was gradual at first, but the volume of the library began to dip as the whirlwind of activity faded into an eerie silence.>You slowly scanned the room, the collective gaze of the vast archives settled on your entourage. The entire unicorn world had seemingly, ground to a halt.>But they weren't looking at the sisters...>Every single one of them, was staring at you.>Clover scanned the room and then turned to you, even he seemed uncomfortable from the sheer number of eyes on you.>Even the sisters joined the others with their own nervous looks.>You felt a lump forming in your throat as the seconds passed - and with a rather stiff motion, raised the hood of your robe over your head, before tucking your hands into the sleeves.>It seemed to help, albeit slightly - just now there were the faintest whispers among the onlookers as they slowly, reluctantly returned to their work.>Clover lightly cleared his throat, then quietly began to address the sisters, who collectively turned at his voice.>"Now that we're here... what were you hoping to find?">Luna spoke first, a move that earned her a quick glance from her sister.>"We were hoping we could just... look around?">He tilted his head slightly, unable to suppress the single huff of laughter that escaped him.>"Look around? You /do/ realize that this is the largest set of archives in Equestria? Come now, you must have /something/ in mind.">The sisters exchanged a quick glance, so you answered for them."Astronomy, anything to do with astronomy.">He squinted at you, perplexed by the request.>"Astronomy? You'd be better off asking my master, he's taken almost everything of value on the subject.">Celestia cut in almost immediately, barely containing her mischievous tone.>"Almost everything?">That made him pause, if only for a second. Looking around the room, he stepped closer to Celestia.>"I wouldn't recommend it. My master's interests have only made things more... complicated.">That seemed to intrigue Celestia, who replied in hushed tones.>"What do you mean?">He quickly glanced around the room, before lowering his voice to a whisper.>"Not here, come on."
>>42564253>As he began began leading you deeper into the labyrinth of shelves, both sisters closed in around you.>Celestia leaned in and whispered.>"What do you think he means?">Luna responded before you could.>"I don't know but I'm not sure we should trust him.">He certainly was a hard read but you had to admit, he had piqued your curiosity."Let's just hear him out, see what we can find out.">"And if he's lying?">"If he is, then we can just leave. No harm done.">With the plan settled, or at least as much as it could be, you followed Clover into a secluded alcove.>It was a cramped space, with a small table surrounded by a few scattered stools.>From the slitted window, the magenta light poured in from the outside and onto the table, illuminating the fog of dust that swirled through the air.>Clover checked the area before joining you, as you all grouped into a huddle.>"Before I say anything else, I need to know - why did my master bring you here?""He didn't tell you?">The slight scowl that formed on his face gave you your answer.>"What do you think?""Well I just figured he would've, since he sent you with us.">"Believe me, I'd rather /not/ be here... first time he's asked me for anything in ages.""If you didn't want to, why bother? He could have found someone else.">He looked puzzled at that, as if the answer was obvious.>"What are you talking about? There /is/ no one else.">You looked between the sisters who seemed just as confused as you were.>Seeing this, Clover continued.>"No one wants anything to do with him, not since you were brought in. The amount of favours he's burned through just to keep you in the castle, it's... well, it's unheard of.""So... what? What are you saying?">"I'm saying, my master has made more than a few enemies - and they're all asking the same thing. So who are you really? And what does he want with you?">The air suddenly felt a lot colder as the realization of what he was saying began to sink in.
>>42564259>You opened your mouth to say something but Celestia cut you off.>"What /do/ you know about us? We thought we were supposed to be a secret.">Clover craned his head to check the surroundings before replying.>"I know that my master has been hiding /something/ ever since he returned from his last expedition, at first I thought that was him - but, when rumours started floating about two others also hiding in the east wing... I knew there was more to this than he was letting on.">"And?">"And - after he scraped the archives for everything on celestial magic, he burned every bridge he had left - just for you. So, you tell me, what is so important that he'd throw away everything, just to keep you here?">Celestia turned to you and Luna, a silent conversation passing between the three of you.>Surprisingly though, Luna spoke next.>"He wants our help to fulfil his destiny.">You could practically feel the skcepticism rolling off Clover.>"No one does what my master's doing to chase their destiny. Make no mistake, he's always been eccentric but this? No, this is something else - something far beyond the idea of 'destiny'. So what aren't you telling me?">Both sisters looked at you, having no answer to give themselves."He thinks... that I can help him by uh, answering questions about my world.">That was a nothing answer and you knew it but it did capture his interest.>"Your world? What do you mean?">You glanced at the sisters, who looked equally intrigued."I come from a place without magic, but he thinks it might be able to help him with his research.">Clover's brow furrowed in confusion, trying to make sense of it but to no avail.>"Why? What makes your world so special?">You hesitated before answering, looking over at the sisters who's eyes darted between you and Clover."I'm not sure if I should tell you that."
>>42564263>"Damnit!">He cursed at himself, punching the air next to him in frustration.>Luna quickly followed up before he could say anything else.>"It's not our fault, Star Swirl said it was important to keep it a secret.">"Of course that's what he said - but what he didn't tell you, is that this house of cards he's built won't last. He might say he has everything under control but trust me, I know what this place is really like. You /have/ to let me help you.">Gone was the composed, witty facade - there seemed to be a real desperation in his plea.>It could just have easily been a ploy to get you to trust him but even the sisters seemed unsure of what to make of it."Why should we trust you? What's in it for you?">"You trusted my master because it suited your needs at the time, but I'm telling you, right now - he's put you in a very dangerous position.">Judging by their reaction, this was news to the sisters as well.>Star Swirl did mention that there would be bad actors out here but this was worse than you could've imagined.>Clover continued, picking up on the silent revelation.>"Everyone knows he's hiding something, so they've been laying traps - which normally wouldn't be /my/ problem, but since you're so important to him - well, I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't at least /try/ to help.">Luna probed further, somewhat skeptical.>"Why would Star Swirl send you then, if he knows we're in danger?">"He knows I'm clever enough not to fall for their tricks but honestly? I think it's because he knows that I'm more tuned into the intrigues of the castle than he ever was.">You found yourself slowly believing him, if only because it made sense.>Celestia though, didn't seem so convinced.>"If this is all true - then why not start with that? What do you want really?">He thought about it for a second, before sighing.>"Look - as much as I'd like to say I'm just doing this out of the goodness of my heart, I'm not. I want to know what my master is up to, because he owes me an explanation for what he's done. I deserve that much at least."
>>42564268And that's all I have so far, probably going to aim for around 20 posts to keep my long-form style moving but the good news is I have the story planned out beginning to end.Bad news is though I like things to be exactly how I want it so, as far as a consistent schedule goes, it's not going to happen.Let me know if you like it, maybe start a bit of discussion on it, help me get some ideas on what you want to see.

I love to see it. A very interesting premise, and it's heartening to hear that you've got the whole thing planned out. Can't wait to see how the rest of the story goes. Have you got a ponepaste? I'd love to add this to the archive.
>>42565497https://ponepaste.org/11360Here you go, it's basically my homebrew Equestria but that's been cooking in my head for a long time. Lots of moving parts but so long as people are interested I'll do my best. Here's a little summary for the archive, story's called: Our KingdomFor over a thousand years, the maelstrom has shrouded the world in a magenta haze, with the sun and the moon having long faded into legend. With the land seemingly on it's deathbed and the three pony tribes more divided than ever, Anonymous stands as the only being that remembers what order even is in a world consumed by chaos. He meets Luna, the younger of two sisters destined to bring the tyranny to an end but in time, they'll find that destiny and fate are forces far crueler than either of them could have ever imagined.

>>42564268>Celestia, turned to Luna and they huddled together away from you both.>Clover watched them, occasionally glancing at you as the sisters whispered between themselves.>After a short while, they turned back to the table and Celestia spoke.>"We'll tell you - ">Clover's eyes glinted as they widened with curiosity.>"But what will you give us in return?">He smiled, the air leaving his nostrils as he gave a barely perceptible laugh.>You watched as Celestia's expression remained neutral, Luna glancing across at you with uncertainty.>He leaned back, adjusting himself on his stool before answering.>"Well - since you ask, there's a reason Star Swirl uses me as his eyes and ears. I know anyone who's anyone in this castle, I could introduce you to some of them, if you want...?">"Why would I want that?">"You can't just walk up to some pony and expect to get what you want out of them, you need something to bargain with - luckily for you, every one is dying to know about you two.">This was sounding sketchier by the second."That sounds great and all but what happens when Star Swirl finds out? I doubt he's going to be happy about this.">"Well that's the beauty of it - my master's reputation is all but ruined because of you. No one will tell him anything, not while there's plenty to be gained by not doing so.">As you and Celestia mused on his words and Luna chimed in.>"Can you help us find the things Star Swirl hasn't? We could use them.">"You mean the things he /couldn't/ find?">"You mentioned celestial arts?"
>>42568336>He stared blankly at her for a second, as a clear grimace formed on his face.>"Ah... well - that might be more difficult.""How come?">He actually looked nervous as he peaked his head around the corner before replying.>"Eh... how do I put this? When my master started hoarding everything he could find on that subject, it raised a lot of eyebrows - especially among those who'd rather see him fail.""Well, you just said you could introduce us, so why not start there?">The sisters nodded in agreement but Clover only seemed more uncomfortable with the idea.>"I - I couldn't, Star Swirl would have my head if he knew you were even talking to them.">That was... an alarming change in tone.>But as ever, Celestia was undeterred.>"He doesn't have to know...">"No no, you don't understand. Star Swirl /will/ find out if you talk to him, so I'd rather not.">"Well then I guess you don't want to know about us after all.">You couldn't help but be impressed by how effortlessly she turned the situation back onto him.>Though you weren't sure that was a good thing.>"No! Okay, fine. I can take you to him - but only if you tell me what I want to know first.">It was quiet, as the four of you settled into an uneasy stalemate.>After a few moments, you broke the silence."What are you gonna do once we tell you? After we go see him I mean.">"That depends - what's your game?""I don't have one - except to help these two.">"Again - why?">You looked at Celestia, who gave a slight nod and then turned to Luna.>She looked at Clover, before looking away.>You could see the internal battle as she weighed her options but then, she met your gaze and gave the slightest tilt of her head.>If that's what they wanted, then so be it.>You just hoped it was the right choice.
>>42568338>You began telling Clover what little you knew - about Star Swirl's research and his apparent belief that the sisters' destinies were tied to the magic of the celestial bodies.>About the diagrams you'd given him, along with existence of the sun and the moon. Things which you had learned, had faded into legend.>Clover listened, utterly captivated - yet, utterly stunned. Stopping only to ask the occasional question.>All of it, leading to Star Swirl's ultimate goal; stopping Discord.>You didn't mention they were alicorns and thankfully, he didn't think to ask.>Had to keep some secrets, after all..."And uh - that's about it. What do you think?">You were met with silence as he ran his hoof through his mane, seemingly lost in thought.>Looking over at the sisters, you could tell they were just as anxious as you were.>After what felt like an eternity, he finally spoke.>"This is insane... you know that, right?""I don't know anything more than you do.">"If /anyone/ finds out about this, it'll be the end of him.">Luna replied back in a whisper.>"Why?">"Because, if what you're saying is true - and I /really/ hope it isn't - then it could get us all killed.">That grim warning left the sisters exchanging nervous glances.>Celestia spoke up, lifting her muzzle in defiance.>"We did what you asked, now you have to help us.">"What!? No - did you not hear me? If you -">"I don't care, you said you'd help us so come on, take us to him.">"There is absolutely /no/ way I'm letting any of you near him, not after what you just told me.">He sounded pretty shook up and now, so were you.>But if this brought you one step closer to normality, then you were willing to take the risk."We don't have to tell him anything. All we need is the stuff on celestial arts or whatever it is - it's for his research.">That didn't give him any reassurance, shaking his head frantically.>"No - No no no, you don't understand - he /hates/ Star Swirl. If he so much as gets a whiff of this, then - ">"Clover!"
>>42568343>A voice called out, causing all four of you to jump.>You turned to look and saw another stallion approaching.>He had a ashen grey coat, with a well-groomed slate coloured mane and ocean blue eyes.>He looked frail, his thin frame mostly hidden by the bulk of the robes he wore.>He approach your little huddle, the smile plastered across his face had a distinct air of menace about it.>"Not causing any trouble for our new guests, are we?">Clover lifted his head to greet him, masking his worry under a pleasant tone.>"Of course not, I was just showing them around.">"Of course you were, that's why I just /had/ to come meet them for myself.">He stepped into your little corner, the magenta light from the window casting an eerie glow across his features as he glanced between the three of you.>Up close, it was clear just how thin he was - like a stiff breeze would knock him over.>Behind his gaze was a mind clearly at work, Luna shrank under him as he passed over her.>Celestia didn't though, not even flinching when he looked her up and down.>He finally came to you and stared at you, squinting slightly as he tried to see under your hood.>If only to break the tension, you spoke up."Hello?">Your voice seemed to startle him, causing him to pull back his head slightly.>"Interesting, I didn't realize that Star Swirl had brought in a... well, what exactly are you?""I'm a human, I'm not from here - in case you were wondering.">He hummed, tilting his head as he studied you.>"Human... I can't say I've ever heard of your kind before, and I should know - I've studied many species in my time, even those beyond Equestria's borders.">His self-aggrandizing was interrupted by Celestia.>"Who are you?">"Oh, where are my manners? Stygian, head archivist here in Canterlot. And who are you, if I may ask?">She hesitated, for a moment before answering.>Stygian shifted his gaze towards Luna who still refused to meet his eyes.>"And you, my dear?">She took a second before answering, her voice barely audible.>"L-Luna...">"Luna... beautiful names, truly. And are the both of you... students of Star Swirl's?"
>>42568352>Clover's eyes darted towards Celestia in a silent plea to not answer.>Luna looked to her sister, who answered with forced politeness.>"Yes. That's right.">Stygian's gaze hardened as he watched you all, a flicker of something passing over his face before his pleasant facade returned.>"And what of your human? Are they a student of his as well?">"He's not /our/ human, he's uh...">She trailed off awkwardly, looking at you for help."My name's Anonymous, I'm not a student - I just help him with his research.">He nodded in acknowledgment, letting the answer pass by as he turned to Clover.>"Where is he anyhow? I would've thought he'd want to show his new students the archives himself.">"You know him, he just sees everything but himself as a distraction.">That made him laugh, an otherwise pleasant sound if it wasn't so calculated.>"That does sound like him - brilliant as he is, but stubborn as ever. But enough about him, what brings you here? Perhaps I can be of some assistance?">He offered, looking between the sisters.>Clover then interjected, his voice strained with an unseen urgency.>"Oh, no no - I was just showing them around, no need to trouble yourself.">"No trouble at all - In fact, I /insist/.">His words left no room for argument.>"Honestly Stygian, we was just - ">Despite being smaller than him, the weight of his presence made Clover recoil as he stared him down.>"Don't play games with /me/ boy! I know everything that happens in here - so tell me, why take such a scenic route?">Clover didn't answer.
>>42568353>"Ah, I see. Well - let me spare you the trouble. Move.">Clover's jaw tightened but he didn't fight, getting up from the table as Stygian took his place.>"Do me a favour and fetch me volumes eight through eleven of the Equestrian Bestiary - you know where they are.">It wasn't a request, but an order and after a brief moment of hesitation, Clover complied - albeit reluctantly.>Stygian watched him go, making sure he was gone before turning back to you all.>"Now, celestial arts I presume?""How'd you know that?">You asked instinctively, stupidly in hindsight.>"It's my business to know, that's how. That being said - it would've been hard to miss the fact that Star Swirl has plundered every scrap of knowledge on the subject. A strange obsession, given how fragmented it is.">He eyed you all again, clearly waiting for one of you to comment.>When no one did, he continued.>"Although... given how unique you two are, I can see why he'd be so interested.">Luna's eyes widened and Celestia stiffened slightly.>Did he know? There was no way... right?>You decided to play dumb, though you probably didn't have to try too hard."Sorry but uh - what's so special about these two? I thought they were just his students?">Maybe it was because he couldn't read you too well or he genuinely bought the lie, but he looked oddly amused.>"Well, their names for one thing - it happens from time to time, unicorns born with names linked to /celestial/ motion - ">He tilted his head toward Celestia for emphasis.>"But to have three of them in one place? All at the same time? That's quite the coincidence don't you think? So you'll forgive me if I'm more than curious.">The sisters visibly relaxed, but man - he knew way too much as it was.>Celestia must have sensed that as well, because she suddenly spoke up.>"We're new here, we don't really know much about it.">Stygian's amused expression didn't fade, if anything it deepened.
>>42568356>"Oh? Then please, forgive my assumption - though I find it hard to believe that Star Swirl would take on students that were completely ignorant of their speciality.">Fuck. That was not good."And what's that?">His eyes flicked to you as his playful smile faded away.>He leaned over the table, getting uncomfortably close.>"He's not as smart as he thinks he is - and neither are /you/. So - let's try this again. What do you want with the celestial arts?">The glint in his eyes betrayed the latent frustration he felt and the surrounding air began to feel heavy."I don't know.">He saw right through you and you knew it, but he slinked back to his seat with a practised calm.>Trailing his eyes over the three of you, he brought his hooves together in a scholar's cradle.>The muffled wind from outside only seemed to grow louder as the silence stretched on.>"Well now - Let's see, two unicorns named after celestial bodies, a human who pretends not to know what's going on and the three of them, seemingly - worthy of Star Swirl's full, undivided attention. Would you like to guess what I think that means?">Luna barely whispered, struggling to steady her voice.>"N-No.">He lowered his head toward her, speaking in a low tone that you could purposefully hear.>"I think we're going to have another little chat soon, don't you?">He pulled away slowly, letting his words hang in the air.>At that exact moment, Clover returned - with such timing that it felt almost deliberate.>He dropped the large tomes onto the table with a heavy thud, sending a fresh wave of dust into the air.>Stygian didn't so much as flinch, rising from his seat and levitating the tomes into his robes - an act he seemed to struggle with.>"Thank you, Clover. You always were so helpful, now be a good errand boy and get these three out of my library.">Without another word, Stygian left - his hoofsteps fading into the silence as he went.>You turned to Clover as he watched Stygian walk away, making sure he we well out of sight before finally turning to you all.>The paranoia you all felt was palpable and Clover tilted his head to leave, which you all did without hesitation.
>>42568362>Your exit seemed to go unnoticed which was perhaps, more unsettling than the earlier scrutiny.>The journey was silent, all the way back to the familiar halls of the east wing.>Only when Clover closed the door behind you, did he take a moment to compose himself before rounding on you, his tone filled with dread.>"We are /NEVER/ doing that again.">Celestia flinched from his outburst, looking disappointed.>Though her expression quickly shifted to anger.>"You can't just blame us for that! He knew everything anyway!">Clover only seemed to become more panicked but you clarified for her."He didn't know everything but he definitely has a good idea of what's going on.">"That's even worse! He's gonna go out of his way to learn everything he can, if only to spite Star Swirl.">He was pacing back and forth and it slowly began to dawn on you."I'm guessing he's the one you didn't want us to meet?">Both sisters looked at each other nervously, before Clover answered.>"Yes! Argh! I never should have taken you there, what was I thinking!?""Just take it easy, alright? We didn't tell him anything he didn't already know, so nothing's changed - right?">Clover stared at you like you'd just spoken another language.>"Nothing's changed!? No you don't understand, I have to warn Star Swirl...">Celestia rushed into his path, cutting him off.>"You can't! He'll lock us in here for sure if you do that!">"Good! The less you're out there the better!">He tried to push past her but she blocked his way again.>"No! Come on! You have to help us - please!">They struggled, Celestia was surprisingly strong as she pushed against him.>Luna then cut through the commotion.>"Why does Stygian hate Star Swirl so much?">Clover stopped struggling as he turned to look at her, the way his expression changed from panic to bewilderment would've been comical, if the situation wasn't so dire.>"You can't seriously mean he didn't tell you?">The words escaped him in disbelief.>Luna merely shook her head, before Celestia let him go to respond.>"He doesn't tell us anything..."
>>42568366>Clover's panic faded, if only slightly. Replaced by what looked like pity.>"Stygian was an old student of his... back when I was a colt. He was - is, brilliant... a prodigy, even.""So what happened?">"Well... he - isn't like other unicorns, He's uh - ">He looked around the empty hall, lowering his voice to barely a whisper.>"Umbral.">Your confusion must have been plain to see, since he quickly continued.>"He can only use dark magic, he hid it for years - it's partly why he's so brilliant but as soon as my master found out, he abandoned him, told everyone and forced him into obscurity.""So he ruined his life?">Clover rubbed the back of his neck with a hoof.>"That's... one way of putting it. As you can imagine, he never forgave my master for what he did to him and /everything/ he's done since then has been to spite my master for betraying him.">Celestia cut right to the point.>"If he's so dangerous, why is he still here?">"He clawed his way back into some semblance of respect through sheer force of will - made himself indispensable. All he cares about now is power - political power, mind you... but power all the same.">Celestia was quiet, but Luna spoke up, still confused.>"So everything he does, is to get back at Star Swirl?">"That's putting it lightly, he'll do whatever he can to undermine him - If he finds out the truth about you, he'll destroy him. So please - let me warn him.">Celestia looked at Luna then back to you before reluctantly, stepping aside.>Clover rushed past her, the sound of his hooves fading as he galloped into the darkness.>The three of you stood in a quietly, the oppressive silence only serving to amplify the weight of the situation.
>>42568370"Hey - it could've been worse... alright?">Celestia didn't reply, glancing at you as you made your quip.>Then she slowly started to walk backwards, before pivoting into a full gallop, racing after Clover.>You called out after her."Hey! Hey where're you going!?">She didn't look back, disappearing down the hall and into the shadows.>You looked at Luna who sighed quietly as she turned to face you.>"What do you think he'll say?">You glanced back down the hall before looking back at her."I don't really wanna think about it...">The two of you stood together for a moment, before you both unconsciously started walking after Celestia.>Hesitant steps, mind you but neither of you wanted to find out what was waiting for you.>"I knew we should've just stayed...">Her quiet tone cut through your thoughts as you walked alongside her.>You gave your own sigh before responding."I'm - I'm sorry.">She turned to look up at you, surprised by the apology.>"What for?""He probably wouldn't have let you go if it weren't for me.">She didn't reply right away, carefully choosing her words before speaking.>"She did all that on her own, you don't have to be sorry.">That was... surprising.>Maybe she was just trying to spare your feelings, given how down you'd been recently."Nah - I shouldn't have got involved - if I'd just kept my mouth shut, none of this would've happened.">"You just - you just wanted to help. That's all.">She was half-right but that didn't make it any better."Still...">You trailed off as the weight of the unspoken words lingered between you.>"Do you think Star Swirl will get rid of you?">Her question was quiet and you paused, stopping in the middle of the hall.>She did the same, waiting for your answer in the purple glow that shone through the windows.>As if mocking you, a low rumble of thunder reverberated through the floor."I'm not going back out there.">You can't and you won't.>But the fear was inescapable and she knew the truth just as well as you did.>She just didn't want to say it.
>>42568372>"My sister was right about one thing though - we /can/ help you, it's just - ">Her eyes flicked to the floor, hesitant to continue.>"We don't know how...">Her answer was both painful and yet, touching.>But she had her own problems to worry about, she didn't need yours dragging her down."I'll figure something out, don't worry about me.">She looked up, meeting your gaze.>Those eyes stared into yours with a melancholy that weighed heavily upon you.>You turned away, instinctively rubbing your face with your hand as if that would somehow hide your anxiety.>It wasn't lost on her, you were sure of it but she didn't press you on it.>Instead, she asked you something else entirely.>"How do you do it?">Her curiosity pulled you from your internal spiralling as you lowered your hand."Do what?">"If you don't have a destiny like we do - then how do you know what to do?">It was a genuine question, though you weren't sure if you could give a proper answer.>How could you explain to her, that nothing guided you beyond your own wants and desires?>It took you a moment, before settled on... something."I uh, I don't.">She seemed confused by that, prompting you to continue.>"What I mean is, I don't /feel/ like I'm meant to do something - so I just do what makes sense at the time.">"Then how do you know if it's the right thing to do?""I don't... not for sure. I try to not hurt others and make good choices but - sometimes you just have to pick something and hope.">She absorbed your words carefully, as if they were jewels of wisdom.>Which, they definitely weren't - but to her, maybe they were.>She must really think about these things a lot.>"Does it make you feel lonely?"
>>42568376>That caught you off-guard. The depth of her question taking a moment to process.>You hadn't really thought about it like that before.>It was lonely here, sure - but what did you expect? You weren't even from this world.>But you realized that, it wasn't you that she was asking about."Are you lonely?">She hesitated, drawing her breath before nodding ever so slightly.>Her face scrunched up as she fought to find the right words.>"I know I shouldn't feel this way - Celestia is right here with me, and I'm lucky to have her. I know that but... sometimes, I don't feel like she really understands what it's like for me.""Does she know you feel like this?">"I don't want her to worry.">The irony wasn't lost on you.>If anything, It reminded you of someone else you know..."I know."She looked back at you, seeing the slight smile on your face. She smiled back.
>>42568381>As you neared the Star Swirl's study, the atmosphere began to change as the shouts echoed against the empty walls.>Quickening your pace, you didn't even get a chance to reach the door as it flew open, bashing against the wall.>"Unbelievable!">Storming through the door was Star Swirl, with Celestia and Clover hovering close behind.>"You just couldn't help yourself, could you!?">The pair of them might have said something, until he saw you and Luna.>"You!">He pointed an accusatory hoof at you, specifically, as he began shuffling closer - the bells on his robes jangling violently.>He got right in your face, though he was a head shorter than you - his fury made you step back as began ripping into you.>"That's months of meticulous planning /GONE/! Thanks to you!""/Me/? Clover's the one who was meant to be watching us!">You threw him under the bus, pointing at Clover who looked offended at the shameless deflection.>"Never mind him! You did this, you talked me into it and now - /Stygian/ of all ponies, knows exactly what they're for!">He was seething, practically hissing through his teeth as he leaned forward."Hey! Don't pin that on me! He was already like ninety percent of the way there on his own!">"Oh, and that makes it okay does it!?""/I/ didn't do anything - I did exactly what you told me, it's not my fault you made it hard for yourself!">The words were out before you could think about them and he was quick to correct you.>"No, all this is /your/ fault! All of it - from the minute I brought you into this castle! If it wasn't for you, none of this would be happening!">That cut you deep, not just because he meant it but because you knew he was right. In that brief moment of reflection, Luna stepped between you both - much to your surprise.>"But it /isn't/ his fault! He tried his best but Stygian was too smart for him.">In any other situation, you might've been offended but - he was, so.
>>42568384>He froze as Luna stared up at him, taken aback by her plea.>The anger was still there but it had taken a backseat as he looked back toward Celestia, who nodded quietly.>With that silent confirmation, he turned back to you with a side-eyed glare, before sighing quietly as the fire inside him died.>"What's done is done, suppose it's too late to take it back now.">He muttered more to himself rather than any of you, before turning away from you as he began to head back to his study.>Celestia stepped out his way as he passed but couldn't help but ask.>"What are you going to do?">He stopped in the doorway, pausing to look back at her for a moment - before turning to Clover and with a tilt of his head, silently ushered him inside.>The door swung closed, leaving the three of you alone together, again.>Luna let out a shaky breath, only now aware of how nervous she was as she took a step back."Hey.">You said quietly, prompting her to look up at you."Thanks.">She didn't say anything but - she smiled and nodded ever so slightly.

>>42568395>You looked over to Celestia, who looked between you both.>"So what now?""I'd say leave 'em to it, they'll come find us if they need us.">You said with a shrug, motioning to the door.>"That's probably for the best - I don't think I've ever seen him that angry.""What'd you even say to him?">"Nothing! He was just mad because we told Clover everything.""Not quite everything...">"You know what I mean.">The awkward silence that followed was ended when Celestia turned and heading for their room.>Luna glanced at you briefly, before slowly walking after her.>She made it a few steps before she slowed to a stop, turning back to you.>"Aren't you coming?""But it's your room?">"So?">She replied with a tilt of her head.>You looked at the door to the study, the muffled voices on the other side were barely audible.>Maybe, you could just forget about this, even if it was just for a little while...>So? You followed her.
>>42586292>She led you to the still open door left in the wake of her sister, slipping inside with you just behind her.>You gently closed the door behind you, taking in the sight of their bedroom.>It felt lived in but not quite homely. Simple with it's few wooden furnishings; two beds, a dresser - the usual amenities.>Between the two beds however, was a large window which offered a view of the surrounding mountains and the maelstrom beyond.>It captured the world outside, bathing the room in the shifting tones of red and purple.>It was a strange beauty, paired with the faint smell of lavender that lingered in the air - almost made your forget about the chaos.>Almost...>Celestia was already laid on her bed, a storm of bundled sheets surrounding her as she eyed you with mild confusion.>Luna meanwhile, made her way over to her own bed - climbing on top of the disturbed, but otherwise still-made bedding.>You hovered near the door, unsure if you should even be in here.>Not wanting to intrude, you shuffled along the wall and lowered yourself to the floor - hugging your knees to your chest.>The cold stone against your back was sobering, even through the fabric of your robe.>But they did, slowly, start to get used to your presence - settling into their very… lonely, routine.>Untying their robes, they cast them off - revealing underneath a vest bound tightly around their barrel.>With the a faint glow from their horns, they slowly unthreaded the laces with that held them in place until they finally fell away, revealing the folded wings beneath.>They opened them slowly, stretching them wide as the joints popped with relief.>It was very… ritualistic, magical even.>Eventually your curiosity got the better of you."Can you actually fly with those?">They both stopped what they were doing to look at you.>Glancing at her wings briefly, Celestia answered.>"They wouldn't be much good if we couldn't, would they?">Right, yeah - stupid question.>Luna then added.>"We haven't been allowed to since we came here, since - someone might see us.""Makes sense.">A short silence followed until Celestia spoke up.>"You don't have to sit on the floor, you know?""No, it's fine, really. I'm okay.">"Suit yourself..."
>>42584562Oh God.....
>>42586294>After a time, Celestia shuffled around in her bed until her head was facing you.>She watched you carefully for a moment, before speaking.>"I have a question.""Yeah?">"Why /did/ you help us today?""What do you mean?">"With Star Swirl - before we went out, you didn't have to stand up for me - I'm just wondering why?">The question caught you off-guard, though the way Luna had perked up made it clear she was wondering the same thing."Oh - uhm, well, I just thought it might've been a good idea, since you're stuck here same as me.">She didn't seem convinced, smiling as she shook her head.>"Mm - no, that's not it, what's the /real/ reason?">It really was just self-serving, no way around it - but she was expecting an answer."I just thought - if I helped you, then maybe you could help me. Later on, I mean.">Celestia hummed to herself, accepting your answer with a nod."Will you?">Luna answered before her sister could.>"We'll try.">Despite Luna's answer, Celestia looked conflicted - her expression changing into something more somber.>"I... We'll /try/ to help you but - We'll see...">That was still better than nothing, you supposed.>"But - thanks. For being honest.""No problem.... Thanks anyway...">She nodded, settling into the mayhem that was her bed as she turned away from you.>Luna was still looking at you with that same melancholic stare, before she turned her attention to the window - laying down as she did so.>You stared outside too, at the sunless world that was Equestria.>It was mesmerizing, the storm itself was alive with the power that was Discord.>What was more frightening, was that you'd started to grow numb to it.>You drew in a deep breath, letting yourself drift into your own, quiet thoughts.
>>42586306>You weren't sure how long you stayed like that, staring, unmoving at the clouds outside.>Long enough for Celestia to fall asleep at least, maybe Luna too.>You were about to get up and leave, a whisper came from Luna's direction.>"Do you sleep?">You blinked, pulling your gaze from the window and whispered back."I'm - supposed to, yeah.">You tried to, but that was the insidiousness of the maelstrom, too bright to sleep soundly, yet just dark enough to never be fully awake.>A madness, that lay between both light and darkness all at once.>She rolled over to look at you - the bed creaking under her shifting weight.>She stayed like that for a long time and you turned back to the window to avoid her gaze.>Should you leave?>Yeah, you probably should leave.>You pushed yourself up from the floor, quietly making your way to the door."I'll uh - see you later Luna.">She didn't respond as you turned the handle.>But as you pulled the door open, you heard the slightest shifting of fabric from behind you.>You turned just in time to see her land on the floor, watching you with hesitation."What?">"Are you tired?">A strange question, you thought - but you answered regardless."No but - I'll get to sleep eventually. Don't worry about it.">"Oh... okay.""Why?">"I uh...">She shifted nervously on the spot, avoiding your gaze.>"I wanted to talk to you more, but - if you're tired then, its fine.">You looked at her curiously, not sure what to make of it.>But - the alternative was laying in your own bed, staring at the ceiling.>What was the harm, really?
>>42586309>Opening the door wider, you stepped outside - catching the briefest flicker of disappointment on her face.>Though her face lit up as you held the door, stepping to the side.>She ducked under your arm and out into the hall - with you gently closing it behind you.>She seemed more… energetic, a youthful vigour that was missing before.>"Have you, explored - much?">She asked, tentatively taking the lead as the two of you began walking."No... I haven't.">You hadn't felt like doing much of anything, really.>Not until recently anyway.>She hummed quietly, trying to ignore the dark cloud that hung over you.>"Well - there's this one place I found, I'm not sure what it is - do you want to see it?""Yeah sure. Lead the way.">Taking the lead, she walked a trotted down the hall - guiding you into the disused sections far from where you were staying.>Without any candlelight, the ambient light from the outside slowly faded as you ventured far from any windows.>That magenta glow slowly shifted as dimmed, bathing the halls in deep blue shadows.>She didn't seem to mind the darkness, if anything she was in her element - though she did occasionally look back to make sure you were still with her.>You only knew that, because her luminescent eyes cast the faintest glow over her face.>It was quite eerie but not in a bad way, just otherworldly."Can you actually see anything in here? 'Cause I can't.">She turned back to you, stopping as her eyes narrowed slightly.>"It's not /that/ dark.""You are literally all I see, how is that not dark?">She stifled a laugh, a melodic sound that echoed down the hall - prompting her to bring her hoof up to her mouth.>"Better not get lost then...""Don't even joke about that, I can't find my way back from here.">This time she couldn't help herself, letting out a small giggle - turning away from you to hide her smile.>You couldn't help but smile yourself, if only briefly."Seriously though, I can't see anything at all.">She looked back towards you, her glowing eyes blinking thoughtfully before a faint glow appeared around her horn.>It didn't do much to illuminate your surroundings but you looked down to find your sleeve enveloped in a similar glow, before your arm was pulled ahead of you.>"Is that better?">Maybe she meant it as a rhetorical question, since she turned around and began literally leading you by the arm.>For the record, it was not better. You still couldn't see.
>>42586317>After feeling like a lost puppy for a while, the two of you finally stopped as you came to a spiralling staircase that had some of the ambient light from the outside filtering down from above.>She released her hold on you, your arm dropping limply as it smacked against your leg.>"It's up there.">She stepped into the stairwell and you did the same - looking up, only to see the spiral continue up for a lot longer than you were comfortable with."Are you kidding me?">"What?""How far up is it?">"Not far...">Why you didn't listen to yourself in that moment - you'll never know.Since you'd climbed what felt like several stories before she actually told you.>"You're almost there - there's only - uh, three windows left!">Luna had stopped climbing normally a while ago and was hovering in the centre of the spiral."That's not fair - you can just fly up.">"I already did it once...">She paused, for dramatic effect.>"I didn't like it.">You'd already lost count of how far you'd climbed so, she was probably being truthful.>Though you wished she'd said something about it sooner.>As you neared the last flight of stairs, you staggered to the top, sitting down on the landing before the door.>She hooked herself onto the railing with her forelegs, still flapping her wings gently to keep her in place.>"See? That wasn't so bad.">She was trying to be encouraging but the deadpan glare you gave her did nothing to hide the smile she was barely holding back."This isn't going to be a common thing, is it?">"No promises."
>>42586321>She leaped over the railing, landing gracefully next to you as you climbed to your feet."So - what exactly is so special about this place, that you just /had/ to drag me all the way up here?">She didn't answer, instead just pushing on the door at the top of the landing.>It groaned as it opened and a rushing wind whistled down the spiral as you looked through to see some kind of enclosed bridge - or rather, what was once an enclosed bridge if the shattered glass strewn all over the walkway was anything to go by.>"It's that door over there.">She pointed with her hoof, to the door on the opposite side, nearly hidden by the gloom of the shadows cast by the skeletal structure.>As she slowly made her way across the sea of broken glass, the howling gale threatening to knock you off your feet. You barely took a step forward before she stopped and turned to you.>Her mane billowed wildly as she raised her voice over the wind.>"Come on!">You hunched over, holding your robes close as you edged your way onto the bridge.>Looking over the edge, there was nothing but the black stone of the mountain below, disappearing into a rolling fog.>Why did you do that?>It did nothing to help you as the stone itself seemed to tremble at the power of the chaos. Lightning split the sky in a deafening crack as the world flashed a neon pink, before fading back into the familiar gloom.>You hurried to the door - where Luna was waiting and as you entered the alcove that framed the door, the gale seemed to vanish into a unnatural silence.>You paused, steadying your breath from the shakes that wracked your body.>Looking at the door, you almost had to double-take.>Though it was damaged from the elements and worn from the passage of time, the symbols carved into its wooden surface were unmistakable; A sigil of the sun and a crescent moon nestled within it.
>>42586326>You turned to Luna, who met your gaze with an eager smile.>"I knew I saw those symbols before, the ones in your drawings? I thought, maybe you'd know what it's for?">You turned back to the door and tried the handle.>It turned without resistance - dust pluming from the rim of the door as it was disturbed.>The hinges groaned as it swung inward with minimal effort, revealing the dark interior.>The two of you walked in, taking a few steps before the door quietly closed behind you with a click.>As your eyes began to adjust, there was a unmistakable ambient light streaming in through a archway near the back of the room.>Luna looked at you, her eyes being all you could really see before you pressed on, with her following close behind.>As you stepped through the archway - you were met with a large and rather empty room.>A domed ceiling, let in some of the maelstrom's light through the weathered glass, save for a hole that seemed to beam a narrow line of light down onto a raised platform."Have you been in here before?">"No - I found the door but didn't know it was important, not until now.">She followed your gaze to the platform as you began walking towards it.>Following the beam of light, the formless mass it fell upon took shape - some kind of cloth draped over whatever lay beneath it.>Looking around - you realized just how vast the room was. You couldn't even see the walls.>Luna was watching you expectantly as you slowly pulled the cloth away - though it was much heavier than you anticipated, having become damp from the elements.>A cloud of dust spread out as it fell to the floor with a heavy thud.>Stepping back from the plume you'd just created, you fanned your hand in front of you.>When the dust settled, you could hardly believe your eyes.
>>42586330"No way...">"What? What is it?""It's a telescope, big one too.">She looked between you and the telescope with a furrowed brow, as if trying to process what you just said.>"What's a telescope?">The question confused you as you looked at her, half-expecting her to be joking.>"You don't know?">"You'd be surprised to what I /don't/ know...">She mused, with a sincerity which only raised further questions."What do you mean?">She stared at the telescope, carefully choosing her words.>"We... never learned anything, before coming here. We can talk and understand what we're told but - I don't know anything. Not really.">That was... strange."Star Swirl didn't teach you anything?">"He tried but uh... we - can't read.""How? Not saying I don't believe you but, you and Celestia seem so... well spoken - if that makes sense?">She gave the question some thought, tilting her head slightly, before simply shrugging.>"I don't know? It just comes naturally I think, like breathing.""Huh...">You replied, trying to sound as non-chalant as possible."Anyway um - telescope.">Luna perked up as you changed the subject, watching as you inspected the ancient machine."This place was probably an observatory, once upon a time. They'd use - ">"What's an observatory?">Her eyes shone with genuine curiosity as she cut you off, you slowly raised a hand to gently shush her."They'd use a telescope - to look at the stars and planets at night. Since this makes stuff really far away, look much closer.">She stepped closer, studying the telescope with a look of wonder."And a observatory - ">You began, grunting as you began to turn the telescope - fighting the centuries of decay."Is where you go, to do just that.">The axis moved with a groan of straining metal as you pointed it toward the hole in the roof.>You stepped up to the surprisingly large eye-piece, made sense since it was made for ponies.>You had to cup your hands around the eye-lens to start looking.>Your faint hopes of maybe seeing something else besides the clouds vanished as you saw the maelstrom, blurred and magnified into a chaotic mess of sparks and magic.>You slowly pulled away, trying to mask your disappointment.>Luna nevertheless pushed past you, wanting to see for herself.>She pressed her eye to the lens, eager to see… something.
>>42586338>After several moments, she finally pulled away with a faint frown."Sorry.">You muttered quietly, your words catching her attention.>The interior was marginally brighter from the outside light reflecting against the lens.>Enough to reveal the ring of dust that now framed her eye.>You brought your hand to your mouth, trying not to laugh.>"What?""Nothing, nothing!">Her puzzled look forced you to let out a small laugh, prompting a scowl to appear.>"What!?">She huffed, which only made you laugh even more.>Blinking a few more times, she finally realized what you were laughing at as she raised her hoof, rubbing at her eye - only smudging it even more.>She looked ridiculous and you couldn't help but laugh harder.>A slight maroon blush spread over her cheeks as she rubbed harder but she didn't seem upset.>In fact, you noticed a faint twitch in the corner of her muzzle - like she was trying not to laugh as well."Yeah, That's what you get!">"For what!?""For Making me walk up all those stairs...">She scoffed at your response in a exaggerated fashion - though couldn't hold back the giggle that escaped her.>Both light and musical, between the faint snorts she tried to hide.>It was a good feeling, a happiness that you'd been sorely missing.>But as it slowly faded away, the contrast between your lives and the reality that you faced became all too clear again.>"So um - I'm guessing it's broken?">She asked, not sounding disappointed but clearly underwhelmed."It's not broken, it's just - there's nothing to see.">She looked up through the hole in the ceiling as she took in the sky.>Her gaze lingered for a moment before turning back to you.>"Well - I still think it's a nice place.">A genuine smile crossed her face, which slowly faded as a comfortable silence settled between you.
>>42586343>Despite its age and decay, there was still a sense of grandeur to it - especially with the way the light came through the ceiling.>She must have felt a similar way - given how lost she was in her thoughts.>Her slow steps echoed off the walls as she explored every detail of the place.>It let your thoughts drift, the emptiness of the observatory made you all too aware of how much you'd lost.>At some point, Luna crept up next to you and you both found yourself sitting in that dark place.>What had been a comfortable silence between you, had slowly morphed into something more somber.>"Can I - ask you something?">You turned to look at her, seeing how she refused to meet your eyes - staring at the ground instead."Sure. What is it?">"How do you know?">She asked, finally her eyes flicking to meet yours.>The question hung in the air, but she continued before you could respond.>"If you don't believe in destiny and no one's ever seen them, then how do you know that that's is what I'm meant to do?">You didn't have a good answer for that, nothing that would satisfy her anyway."Well - Luna, on my world means moon, it's just another word for it, really.">"And my sister?""That one, I'm not so sure on. The sun is a celestial thing, you know like what Stygian said? So you'd think, moon - and sun. Makes sense doesn't it?">"So... it's just our names?">Said aloud, that was as paper-thin of a reason as they come but..."Yeah... Yeah, that's it."
>>42586347>That clearly wasn't the answer she was hoping for but she seemed to accept it.>Hope, an assumption and a name.>That's all this was but, it was all they had.>"Do you believe it's true though? My destiny?">You looked away, shrugging your shoulders as you threw up your hands."I - eh, I don't know Luna - I'm not the one with magic, I don't really understand this sort of - ">"Do you believe in it?">Her question cut straight to the point, silencing your rambling as she stared at you expectantly.>The two of you were looking directly at each other, your uncertainty clashing with her need for honesty.>So, you told her the truth."I don't know.">A look of silent disappointment spread across her face briefly but you pressed on."But I /want/ to believe... you don't understand how much I need this to be true.">Her eyes softened slightly, listening intently."Everyone else, they can just go back to norm - ">You cut yourself off, emphasising the correction."Back - to the way things are right now. But... there's nothing for me here - having the hope that somehow, you and Celestia will be able to fix things? It helps me.">You hung your head, staring at the floor between your legs."So... yeah, I want to believe because I need /something/ to hope for."
>>42586349>She stayed quiet for a long time, as if waiting for something more.>When it became clear that that nothing was coming, she pulled in a slow breath through her nose.>She went back to staring at the ground in front of her.>She didn't say anything else for a while - neither did you.>Lost in your own thoughts, the weight of your words pressing down on you both.>But when she finally did speak, you barely heard it.>"I um - don't really know what to say to that... I didn't realize that you - had that much faith in us.">That made you huff out a weak laugh through your nose."I wouldn't call it /faith/ Luna, just eh... look, you don't need to hear all this, alright? I'm fine.">Luna didn't press. She just gave a slow nod, standing up as she did.>"Okay...">The subtle undertone of hurt didn't go unnoticed but what did you want her to say really?>'Don't worry, I'll make everything right - just for you'?>Even you weren't that selfish, or naive.>Plus she had her own problems to deal with, she didn't need yours adding to them.>So when she made her way back towards the entrance, you didn't stop her.>Instead, you rose to your feet and fell into step behind her, starting the long trek back...
>>42586351That's this update. I like political intrigue and showing the world I've made but I realize that I need more character moments between Anon and Luna, since that's what we're here for.I know a lot of you guys lurk but I am interested in ideas or directions you might want the story to go. Not on the same level as a CYOA but more of a 'I want to know about x,y,z in this Equestria' to give me more ideas on what I can actually have Anon do aside from the overarching goal of restoring normality to the world. It won't effect the overarching plot but will help me structure more of the social interactions in the story since I could use a little help with guiding Anonymous' character.I'm glad to hear at least some people are enjoying the story so far, so for all you lurkers, just one post. Please? Just to help me get a feel on what you want to see.
>>42586390Thanks for the green, Anon
>Dear Princess Luna,>Your tiny hiney excites me so.>Anon
>>42587022Princess Luna, I need your tiny hiney so bad.
>My, these scrumptious color sticks pair quite well with this sticky concoction! My compliments to the chef.
How would you react to this glare?
>>42587536I whip out this maneuver
this is the dress i came up with /moon/ i hope you guys like it so farcolour wise i was thinking black, white and silver with some sparkly stuff like maybe stars on the trail and moonstone or pearl for the jewellery bits. I think she'd look perfect with a flower or broach tucked by her ear too what do you anons think though?
>>42586390Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your story.Apologies for not commenting earlier (and for my low activity on the board in general).I've read the first part and can already tell your writing is solid and the time frame when the story takes place is still heavily underused in the writefag scene so that's a plus too.The bad news in my particular case is that due to my mental fuckuperry and limited free time I can't enjoy stories like these at the moment. That will certainly change in the future as it did many times before (usually after the writefag gives up and abandons their green - I HATE MY FUCKING BRAIN SO MUCH), but right now your green is the opposite of what my mind wants to consume. I wish more Anons would answer your request but sadly this thread has a habit of talking AT each other rather than WITH each other, so replies to greens have always been scarce. That or they just post pictures. So right now all I can do is wish you the best and pray for myself to become interested in longer, more serious greens again.
>>42587853So far so good. I definitely agree with the flower tucked behind her ear idea.Colors sound good but it heavily depends how you use them. I'm afraid I'm artistically retarded so I can't help you with that.
>>42587853Looks great, Anon. I think your color scheme sounds good. Sparkly like stars and silvery like moonbeams is always good for Luna. Maybe some sapphires too?
>>42586390If ponies have contact with any other races. If those races are also getting absolutely fucked up by Discord. If Anon and Luna smooch up a storm. If Celestia watches. If stallions last 12 seconds.
>>42588273>Luna and Anon making love causes tremendous thunderstorms to developI like that concept.
>>42588760I was just using a phrase, but it could be plausible. In a world of disharmony, arguments can create arctic winds and frost and magical wendigos after all.
>>42587853she looks especially beautiful anon
>>42558396>opposite poles of universal dualityAs a constructor of personal, very deep schitzo-tier headcanon and extended cosmology, what does your duality of the Sisters look like?
