It's pretty obvious that human Sunset would have gone to the pony world to maintain "balance". The reason portals keep opening up seemingly randomly is because Equestria is trying to pull pony Sunset back into the pony world. The conceit of the movie would be trying to both reconcile with a very angry and depressed human Sunset, close the portals, and pony Sunset would be put into a position to "sacrifice" herself by going through the portal and staying in the pony world permanently... until human Sunset offers to do it, since she has literally nothing in the human world and Princess Twilight is willing and eager to take on a new friendship apprentice after Starlight graduated.

Then seasons 8 and 9 happened.

Last night I had a bad dream where I went to console sad and depressed Sunset Shimmer. I gave her some pill, not sure what it was maybe some anxiety pill and I took one as well, to show that she can trust them. We talked and from what I remember she just felt miserable. Then she offered me a different pill, but I didn't see her take that one. She then said she's had enough and told me that she was going to rape me now.
I got scared and ran away to bathroom, where Twilight Sparkle was near the window, having some issue with birds. I locked the door and told her that Sunset was going to rape me, but Twilight barely said anything and she seemed not to care much. I got scared Sunset could get through the window and I looked up and I saw her on the ceiling. Then I woke up.
