It was my first and only long fic. I'm biased, so, I'll say this: I personally still really like it in a lot of ways (such as the fact that it's actually completed), but I don't recommend going out of your way to read it. I always wanted to write a sci-fi fic, so I did. And I did so by throwing in allllll the sci-fi shit I like. CZ is sloppa, but it's MY sloppa.

You're right after looking at the chapter again, although it's worded in a very poor way. Peter did say he may find someone else in the city, but confusion comes from the moment after from how the MC said they do indeed like him and said they needed more time to be ready before Peter responds by agreeing and saying they'll see where that takes them. Essentially, instead of Peter giving up and actually letting the MC know that they should only remain friends from now, he left it in the air to keep his options open. Worse, it was worded in a way to make it sound that Peter was agreeing to WAIT for the MC to be ready, while also getting off on the technicality that he did say before that he would seek someone else at the city. In the end, Peter is just a character in it for the sex, even if he has to string along someone's emotions, just in case he gets an in. Regardless it that was the original intent in his writing or not.

Less bothered by Sunburst himself and more from the MC side of things, and the potential railroading of the situation. It's just frustrating to see the MC be easily adapt to the idea of having sex with the opposite gender with little to no resistance on the matter. For what's suppose to be a serious story about an apocalypse, a human man going through a gender bend into an alien species sounds like a situation where they would get angry and fight back with all their might if they noticed themselves falling into a form of instinct they knew was part of their alien body, especially if that instinct is changing something as personal as sexual attraction, which is exactly what that bat pony guard perfectly illustrated (before they completely fucked it up), but instead the MC is written to be easily giving in to stallion scent and the idea of sleeping with them to the point of low standards. Again, the potential was there to explore the conundrum of alien instincts, especially if Starscribe actually had the relationship with their ex remain for whatever time, but instead it's just written closely to a porn scenario involving a gender bend.

The MC, who is supposed to be fairly responsible for a 14-yera-old filly (which makes sense given she was previously a 25-year-old human man), has sex with a colt she just met a few days ago and lets him cum inside. He actually thought she was a dude the whole time (she's been in disguise each time they met so far), but once he realizes, he starts making out with her less than five minutes later. In the span of about 500 words, the story goes from him seeing her closet full of dresses and saying "hang on, you're actually a filly?" to him sneaking out of her room as she lays on the bed wondering if she just got herself knocked up. She never had any romantic feelings toward him prior to this, and also never sees him again afterward.

This is obviously "oh shit filly, wtf are you doing" tier behavior on the part of both characters, and I fucking hate it. But I could just barely be persuaded to look past that if the author had a good reason. For example, if the MC were to actually get pregnant (by a commoner, no less), that would create all sorts of interesting problems for her back at home.

The author did not have a good reason. He just needed her to get laid as a milestone of her growing up (the human MCs get turned into 10 year old fillies, and the story follows them until age 17 or so), and for some reason decided to have her do it with this random-ass guy instead of an established character. IIRC after this point she pretty abruptly goes from having no interest in colts to wanting to bang the servant's kid (who by the way is another nothingburger of a character, not quite as bad as Peter, but still badly underdeveloped given he's a major love interest). She also starts having a more mature mindset in general - not "having sex has given her a better understanding of sex and relationships", but rather "having sex makes her metaphysically an adult, so she magically has a better understanding of other random shit". Kinda like that deranged Stephen King book where the kids all have to screw each other before they can escape from the sewer.

Honestly, this fic wuold have been so much better if the author had shipped the two MCs with each other (there are in fact two human guys who both get turned into fillies at the same time). They aren't even sisters in any meaningful sense (they're raised in separate households and barely interact for most of the fic) so it wouldn't even be incest.

Starscribe is just bad at writing romance in general. There are a few notable exceptions, but afterward he went right back to writing garbage. The good ones are:
>Fine Print: really good except for the ending. The main conflict of the whole story is "will he decide to give up his entire life on earth to be with Rose?" In the end he never actually decides, he just gets b& from earth due to Discord shenanigans so he has no choice but to stay with Rose.

For one, the Starscribe comment chains only ever have substance on the club weeks. The rest of the time, it's just the same "I want to get validation that the trans characters are too happy and the ships suck" followed immediately by validation that the trans character are too happy and the ships suck, and a smattering of keks, and then maybe it's repeated.

For another, there's still a Fallout thread, and importantly distinguishing it from the FiO threads, there's an element of care to compare FoE spinoff stories against kkat's work. The thread doesn't want to talk about good fics, so that tends to manifest in how much worse Somber's writing is than kkat's, but a lot of it still revolves around kkat. In contrast, it's hard to believe that big of a fraction of FiO posters even know Iceman authored FiO. That story was written to be released as a "what if scifi trope you guys" and generally left to spin on its own afterwards. People are much more likely to know about FoE than FiO out in the bigger fandom.

Even this thread has certainly talked about Forthwith and Luna-tic more than Starscribe, overall.

I was positively surprised! Whom the Princesses... was a good (or even very good) story that I liked a lot less than it deserved, in part for the pretty unpleasant humanization (worse, making them br*tish!) and bureaucratization of Equestria. This still has traces of that because we're in the same setting, but owing perhaps to the Hearth's Warming nature of the fic or it being a shorter oneshot, that nonsense is vastly reduced here—the worst you get is the zebras=blacks thing, but that can be blamed on the show. Oh, and this fic does close to a 180 on the role of the Princesses. Whom the Princesses(...) was downright disrespectful, and this is not. Very good.
Comedy is also reduced, which I'm sure would be a problem for those who enjoyed the very br*tish humor of the original, but I wasn't one of those people, so for me, it's all improvement. In short, I liked this fic a whole lot. The author is a very capable writer, his idea was good, and the execution leaves nothing to be desired. Almost nothing. While the tone of the story is very Hearthswarm'y, and the big conversation with the zebra ambassador actually works super nicely for a "moral" of a Christmas story, the last scenes of the fic are a bit underwhelming. Yes, I can see what he was going for, but having both Celly and him end up working and alone on the holiday in an attempt to say that this is also good and a valid way of spending Hearth's Warming... sorry, I disagree. It soured me a little on the fic, but it didn't ruin the 95% of the story before it. Good fic! Like a 7/10, because the writing is really excellent. I am writing these parts as I read the fics, and I'd expect this to be either the best or second-best story now. We'll probably see in a second, when I read TD's fic next.

Have we been unlucky, or is The Descendant wildly overrated? Maybe I shouldn't start with such a controversial take, but this is pretty medium. Not a bad fic, like a 5/10, but this really isn't doing it for me. The Hearth's Warming atmosphere is pretty good. It is also evoked in a somewhat forceful way, but alright, for the holidays I'll permit that. It's just that... the character voices are pretty mediocre, trending towards bad. And for a fluff Slice of Life fic, messing up characterizations in this way takes away a lot of points. The writing is pretty good—far better than the site's expected level in 2012—but the story is sort of fine, and the characters somewhat ruin it. Also, I think his interpretations of some of them are straight-up awful (like making Shining dumb), and having such direct sex allusions in an E story is also wrong.
The emotional climax of the story was also just okay. Exactly opposite of the previous fic, I came here with a pretty good opinion of the writer and walked away disappointed. I won't downvote it, but I hesitate to leave an updoot on it!

Five letters in, I'm sold! Amazing. Away with all the formatting bullshit done by people who want to look cool and postmodernist and shit. THIS is great! The effort into personalizing each letter (the look, errors, style, formatting, etc.) elevates this into the status of a great fic! The character voices are excellent, and the fic gets probably the most points for uniqueness that I've given a story. The ending is a little abrupt, but I can't honestly dock any points for that, with all the effort already in the story. Excellent!
10/10, go straight into Favorites; no objections will be accepted. This fic humbles TD's story so badly it's not even funny. Holy shit.

The second latest comment under this is by a deleted no-story default pic account saying simply, "What utter shite." And look, while mr. Jonathan is close to being "objectively" wrong, I do kind of wish I had the clarity of purpose that he seemed to live his life with.
Instead, I'll say that I disliked reading this. I won't downboop it because I don't think it's a bad story, but I kind of sort of hated the idea of this. This is basically a collection of simple "dark" stories meant to take apart old pony myths and the romanticization of them. And the author does this by submerging us in a pretty bad Shitquestria, kept "compatible with general canon". Awful, really. Also, it should maybe be obvious, but I don't mind reading some bad AU Equestria fics, as long as it's done for a valid reason. For instance, Synthetic Bottled Sunlight had some issues, but its (exaggerated, even) shitquestria wasn't one of them. Or the infamous ToD, where the absolute moral corruption of DT serves as a driving force in the first part of the story and is later— well, spoilers! If we're being generous, I'd guess that the "point" here is dark humor, as a juxtaposition of how bad things were then and how they are now, so much so that the Princesses and Cadance don't even see the problem? In either case, ew. I couldn't bring myself to read the third one in this mini-series.

Kek I saved this one for last because I thought it would be the best, but ehh. Some nice visuals, but too much sappy actions. Constantly rubbing and touching on each other and that's not even in reference to the hornyness. Spike is constantly petting Twilight and if he isn't then he's petting his own frills or his tail. The scene where Twilight chased him around 'trying' to get his candy cane was better than all the weird petting scenes, and the hugging was fine too. The author just seemed a little too focused on the skinship. Also it was hard to tell how old they were supposed to be. We eventually get a definitive number, but their behavior seemed all over the place to me.

Yup, AJ writing Celelestia was a highlight. Even something like that adds so much world building to the fic, I bet it's not uncommon for a decent chunk of ponies to have pretty common writing errors like that and somehow it adds to the ponyness of it all. And holy shit Sweetie Belle's letters were beyond extra and yet I loved it. Especially when she double's down. This style is incredible honestly. Letting SB have the same errors as the other cmc but a vastly better presentation is perfect. And AJ was just a more mature AB style that even kept some of the errors, kino.

This was exactly the part that ruined the ending for me. McFaggot's lesson is bad and shame on the author for writing it like that (I get where he's coming from, but Christmas isn't the time), but it is sort of defensible as Hearth's Warming-themed, and it underscores his speech to the beeg zeeb. But Celestia working through Hearth's Warming is awful. It kind of makes sense in the story, with her trying to let him go home for the holiday (and these scenes are meant to show both of them spending the Hearth's Warming "together"), but writing this problem into a Christmas fic is poor taste.

Honestly, this is just bad. If you like comfy pony, you'll be disgusted. If you like grimdark, you'll be bored by the framing device. If you like this kind of whiplash and tonal inconsitency... It's not really that good overall.

Is it also the quintessential gimmick fic? I can't think of any other that does something unconventional with style that lands the way it does. It's just so earnest. Epistolary fics are nothing new. Using scans of actual letters is not unheard of. But man, the author really went out of his way to make every letter overflow character. It really feels like each character really is pouring their thoughts into the letter they wrote. Chef's kiss and all sorts of meme and clichés for praise.

The donuts chapter does quite a lot to contextualize Celestia's actions and seeming inactions, I definitely wouldn't say she's written as a moron or any kind of bumbler. The only real exception is the premise (that she doesn't become Twilight's mentor), but I've already written about how the premise is impossible.

As for what Luna was doing, there were definitely some things that it was clear Forthwith was not endorsing, like Twilight's induction to hatred of Celestia. I would rather the story not have toed the line so closely, but in the end I don't think what Luna was doing was pedophilic. I know there are some posters here who assert that Celestia and Luna, due to their age, can only ever love each other, and I wonder if you're one of them. The story itself is not that ambiguous about Twilight understanding what it means to have sex with Luna (she can consent) and that she wants to have sex with Luna (she does consent).

I don't find the question of "if you say Twilight is 16 and write her more than half a decade older, is she 16?" to be very interesting, but there is another question in the story that is more interesting: Can an immortal raise her perfect mate? I think ___ answers it with "yes, but only in a fantasy." The thing that cinches it for me is that Twlight isn't coerced. Luna Rationally does both halves of making a perfect mate: she raises Twilight into her ideal partner while simultaneously predicting what Twilight's ideal partner is and transforming herself into that. In the end, Twilight could pursue a monogamous relationship with Twinkleshine. She doesn't, obviously, but Luna (by that point) clearly wouldn't make her stay.

How does it not make sense? It's a pretty basic idea. You go back in time, fuck something up, and return to the present to see the fuck up had a domino effect. Or the opposite, you see a "bad" version of the future if you don't make the right choice in some upcoming decision.

A parallel/mirror universe is a distinct concept, in that its setting happened independently of the story and the protagonists' actions. They're just along for the ride and are usually trying to flee that continuity and return to theirs.

The main issue is authors don't write the whole story before posting. It's insanely hard to write a time travel plot and not have the whole thing planned out. It can run away from you really fast and start kicking up paradoxes real quick if you're not really anal about it.
