Welcome friends, ITT:
We make and share pony art, with absolutely no pressure to deliver anything that's technically good (besides having ponies in it, which makes it good by default)

Make something, share what you've done, and give feedback and motivation to help us all keep improving and creating!

This thread's focus is art, but beginner or low effort content of any kind is welcome here. If you do want to post about something else like music, gamedev, or crafts, though, just note that you may find better help and feedback posting it in the /create/ thread

Are you an experienced artist? Leave some tips, feedback, guides, or tutorials, they're well appreciated here!

Guides, tutorials and resources! Start here!

This is my second animation. This stuff makes me appreciate all the professionals out there that make it look effortless. This was significantly more difficult for me than the last one I did. The real challenge was cleaning and coloring. I started to notice things I didn't like, but it was so late in the process I couldn't change them easily. But it doesn't look too bad when you don't look at it too closely.

A very good day one, I'd say focus on you anatomy and you will be fine.
>>
>>43114211
Good job, scootaloo is my second favorite pony. She is so sassy.
Feedback: keep learning anatomy and proportions. The body is way too long and the legs too short. The mane is too thin and doesn't look to have any volume. I think the right eye is positioned incorrectly, and doesn't look to be attached to her head. Her left leg is bent in a manner that is anatomically impossible.
As for improving, keep practicing. Draw a lot. Sometimes just repeat a drawing again and again. Study your favorite artist, see how they draw and try to mimic. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Also try to be more confident in your lines and avoid 'chicken-scratch' drawing. I struggle with this myself, but it'll make your drawings more intentional and build your skills. Using a mirror is also another good trick to see things that don't look right.

Don't let this discourage you. I hope you keep up on posting, I would love to see your progression :)

I never feel like I get snoots right either. And the show's flash rigs usually only snapping the muzzles from full front to full-profile doesn't make things any easier. So I can't help there.
Maybe hinting that the chest and rib cage are starting around the connecting point of the front legs would help with the neck feeling too long?

Nobody is saying you MUST draw thousands of sketches a day. Just that if you have free time to draw, use it to draw, and don't think "well I did my draw of the day, time to relax now". Getting competent at drawing IS hard work and you MUST force yourself from time to time (especially forcing yourself to get out of your comfort zone).
>>
>>43120233
I agree with you generally, but in the very beginning I think it's better to take it slow until you naturally feel like pushing and doing more. Eventually, once you've got the habit of starting, it'll be automatic to go longer.
>>
>>43120233
but what if dont want to do anything because i have depression
>>
>>43120441
I agree with that attitude actually. You shouldn't overdo it, especially since you won't see a lot of return on your investment in the beginning and that would just lead to disappointment. Better to start slow and do it for fun on the side and when you see steady improvement in like a year ramp up your training.
>>
>>43120450
Drawing cute mares will help cure your depression.

Or not, depends on how much you can cope with the knowledge that they will never be real.

I don’t use it, but derpibooru seems to have the largest audience.
>>
>>43122456
derpi's jannies have a hate boner for random shit, so everyone ive seen talk about it doesnt recommend it. if you just wanna archive your work to let other people see it, no sense in going into the sharky waters when the others will work just as well
>>
>>43122456
derpi does have the largest audience by a mile, most of the alt boorus scrape from it so it saves time since you don't gotta manually upload your shit to the alt boorus. the only real downside to the altboorus is that the majority of them have minuscule communities, and the mods themselves can be just as autistic/corrupt as the derpi ones sometimes. looking specifically at ponybooru and the controversy one of the mods there got into a few years ago.
>>43122470
generally speaking as long as you don't go out of your way to fuck with them or constantly fight with people they leave you be. political shit in general should be avoided on derpi regardless of what side you're on iit always starts shit in the comment section and gets downvoted to hell. so if you're one of those people who insists on being a political activist and constantly shoves politics into your pony shit, anywhere else that isn't derpi would be better for that kind of stuff.
>>
>>43122526
I prefer small communities honestly. The bigger the community, the more retarded and tasteless.
>>
>>43122541
a perfectly fine and respectable choice, out of all the altboorus ponerpics is definitely the most active followed up by twibooru, twibooru doesn't have commenting though if that matters to you. ponybooru is dead as fuck as is manebooru. you also have the choice of pone.social if you want a twitter like experience without the cancer of using twitter and a small community as well if you decide you don't want to use any booru.
>>
>>43122526
I've seen a whole host of some very degenerative stuff they are willing to host, so I wonder where it is that derpibooru draws the line and gets controversy, unless it's like you said with political junk.
>>43122541
Same. I personally don't care to have an online presence so posting here is perfect for me.
>>
>>
>>43122700
generally on derpi and most of the alt boorus almost all fetishes and content are allowed. derpi does not allow lolicon though while twibooru and ponerpics do. race of course is also something that should generally be avoided but doesn't generate as much ass blasting as you might think unless you have a particularly polarizing take or people get the wrong message from your art. generally you're allowed to post whatever but obviously since the derpi community is so large and diverse you can absolutely expect some blowback on anything remotely controversial. what really seems to matter the most is how you interact with people and the mods though, if you go around fighting with people and the mods constantly and just generally stirring shit up you can expect to get banned. to date I've never had any trouble with any of the mods, I keep my interactions on the site mostly positive or as neutral as possible and don't get into flame wars with people so take that as you will.

If you are the same artist, you've improved a lot. Lineart looks clean and the shading looks good. Though I think you should do something different with the facial hair. It still looks odd. I think it's cause the mane and the beard merge seamlessly, but I'm not sure.
>>
>>43126432
Thanks for the recommendation and I'm still on the process of how to figure out how how to deal with the facial hair and mane. Maybe a big influence from anime where spikes are prominent and an easy way to make an unique silhouette and also that I have beard myself. Also by using something not so common in OCs or even canon ponies is hard to find a reference to copy or learn from. Also because I don't consider myself good looking or handsome at all so I like the idea of making him somehow weird and an outcast at first sight.
>>
>>43126441
I have never even attempted to draw a beard on a pony, so take what I have to say with a grain of salt. I don't even think I can describe to you why it looks strange to me, but I will try - hopefully other anon's will contribute.
I think it looks werid, to me at least, because the back of the mane connects directly with the beard. In reality, the beard doesn't connect with hair like that, and instead connects with the side of the ear. I looked through the boouru to find a beard similar to yours that I liked.
>>
>>43126477

you got it all wrong dipshit. You were too retarded to read at one point in your life, and the correct effort brought you here.

The same goes for drawing in 3D, start with what you can mentally grasp. For example, if you draw two overlapping shapes, one of them is closer to the viewer than the other, that one overlaps. Very simple, but all projection is expanding on this idea.
>>
>>43127949
When coloring I've been making shadows and thatchas added a whole different dimension to my drawings and it's great. It gets that overlap look without too much fuss

There are many tricks that create the illusion of understanding the form, but they are just tricks.
>>
>>43127787
I mean for this in no way to confront, contradict or condescend, but that blue figure is hard for me to read. Do the top and bottom connect or overlap? Is it supposed to be see through? The lighting seems all over the place, I can't make sense of it in my head. The other one looks fine, though.
>>
>>43128319
that is somewhat on purpose, to illustrate the illusion of form. Every arangement in 2D is both at once until defined. Its like the hollow mask illusion which paradoxically autists do not fall for.

I need some fresh eyes on this, bale!
Is this snoot wierd!?
I never do proper construction and just add snoots by feel. And for some reason I always try for this halfway angle, that's in between the two flash ones in the show, so I have a hard time finding references.
Thus I draw snouts that I end up not being able to tell if they look okay or all wonky.

Any other aspects that need criticism are also welcome!

I'm a beginner myself, but I think it looks good. I would personally extend the chin to go tangent to the midline(the red line I drew), rather than curving it inward. Looks like a stallion so I made it more sharp. If it was a mare, I would make it more rounded.
>>
Tried doing a study, I think, guess I'm just not sure if I'm understanding the anatomy correctly or making false conclusions about how to apply references

And >>43129946 advice about her chin are good. Helped me realize I had to round it more and change where the helmet's chin strap goes, to get it out of the way of the neck/chin merging point.
>>43129976
All those muscles look real good! All way above my knowledge, so I have little input.
Giving those two rounded, lowermost chest pectorals more love and attention like this is always a plus in my book.
Your bucking sketch with it's more balanced center of gravity is cool!
I'm sure AJ is throwing her whole weight like that cause she knows the tree will keep her up, and it's a more powerful line of motion for the animation, but yours is suited for both bucking trees and happy air kicksies as well!
>>43130014
Very nice!
Only thing I'd suggest it to maybe run more "o" mouth frames for the "gooning", to help one's mind sound it out a little easier. And if that makes her mouth look too static, you could try adding another O frame; maybe one where her mouth makes and even smaller o, for maximum "ooo".
Might be hard to fit though, since it looks like she shouts it out quite quickly.

I'm glad I could give some advice that helped. Like I said, you already made i look really good as is. As for placing the snout, and just the general proportions of the face, I've also have had this issue. I was just winging it and while sometimes I could get results I liked, I couldn't be consistent with it, so a few days ago I tried developing some sort of method. I personally like to give ponies a check and chin, a little different from the show, because I think it makes their faces have more volume. I think I have figured out what I like. This is really just for me so there is a lot of crappy drawings as I practiced. But I highlighted the ones I like.

And thank you for your suggestions. I've never animated mouth movements so I wanted to see if I could be lazy and get away with how typical anime does it. But I'll try your suggestion.

What a bunch of cuties!
That's some diligent stuff, anon. You should be proud. I really should stop being a lazy ass and do some training and studies at all.

Your animation does looks great as is! I'm just very biased towards looking for mouth flaps at the moment, since I just recently got done making another animation where I got carried away and matched my flaps with every single phoneme. My plan was for easier open/closed, semi-matched frames as well, but I fell into feature-creep, as usual.
It's over here if you wanna see: >>43118350 . And while the syncing turned out pretty good, that long sentence is actually only 5 different mouth shapes: "general open", "I/e", "o", one universal half-open tween frame and the closed one.
Also: the extra blinking in that one is entirely inspired by your cute "rocking anon-colt" gif.

face is perfect anon. If in doubt, make the muzzle features smaller, most people accidentally make them too big or too high up on the face giving them a chin, but this is perfect.
Technically show accurate pony heads are slightly oval shaped, longer in the vertical direction, but it's a stylistic thing. Might be what's bothering you though.

Wonderful!
The stretching frames make the fast movements so bouncy and fun!
And the warm shading and colored lines makes her look all soft and cute!
You even put soft blending shade down by the "table", and a soft blush as well. It looks very good, and I'm jealous cause I'm always afraid of adding soft blending to my gifs, since all the colors in the transitions tend to ramp up the file-size real quick. Maybe I just need to start using the dithering option. Or a better program than CSP.

You should stop with colors for now and focus on shapes of the body, what pieces make up the legs/thighs/chest/thighs, use references, copy and trace other pieces with proportions you like until you learn them for yourself
Look at the resources at the top of the thread for poses to copy
Copying other pieces is the best way to learn as long as you are using good pieces with clear lines and not chicken scratch
Adding colors and backgrounds are things you should focus on once you get a good idea of shape and proportions, it will make you much happier once you start to see the improvement in your pieces yourself
Keep trying though anon you might be the only stallion artist I've seen consistently on bale, I'd be disappointed if you ever stopped after all the effort you've put forward

this might help. Elipses are the abstraction of a 2D circle viewed in perspective. It's made of two lines connected by curves, one short and one long.

The rule is that they are always true 90 degrees to each other and the difference in length determines the perspective tilt of the cirlce.

This can be used to model tubes by having the line of the center of the tube divded up into incriments seperated by elipses.

hopefully the pic is clear.

They do look good. But like the other anon said; Scoots expression does not quite match the intensity of the other girls.
I'm gonna sling the same advice I always do and suggest to raise the corners of the mouth.
The mind says that an upward lip line makes happy smiles, but the cheeks and corners of the mouth are involved in almost all powerful emotions; The negative ones as well.
A disgusted mouth is a bit closer to a snarl than just a frown. This usually also makes the cheeks involve the eyes, but you already did give Scootaloo a lower eye squint, so that's all good.

Please excuse big autist examples drawn with a mouse, since my drawing pad just went and killed it's usp port.

Unfortunately you probably just have to learn how to use the system, drawing software is different but procreate has lots of useful tools that you just have to learn
Procreate has a circle tool that is helpful for drawing guides to pony proportions if you look at the bale tutorials

Whirlwind of learning is a massive understatement. The tutorials seemed pretty straightforward but when i actually got into it it was something else entirely. There are a few features i still need to learn and a couple methods i want to try next time, especially with the clothes as i can do some interesting things with the layers if i put some more effort into learning how they work
>>43153143
The cutie mark is supposed to be a take on a Phoenix. This was my inspiration
>>
>>43153260
Yeah, layers are the biggest power of digital for me.
Being able to mess with stuff without affecting anything else is very important to me. It's why I keep staying with Paint Tool SAI, since it seems to be the only damn program that properly stops colors and blending from bleeding across both layers and selections.

But it also makes me tend to end up with a million layers, all with spaghetti-code style co-dependency to one another. Blessing and a curse.
>>
>>43153346
The tutorials for procreate show them adding color and showing it not bleed off the layer but the couple times i tried it it didn't work. I'll have to try again
>>
>>43153614
For procreate, before you lift your finger when placing a color, wait for the color to fill the area then move your finger right/left to adjust color threshold. That will probably help your issue.
>>
>>43153688
Oh, im familiar with that function, i was talking about when using the brushes. The lower can have a set boundary where the brush won't go off that layer
>>
>>43153702
Oh sorry, I’m not entirely sure what your talking about then. Are you talking about clipping layers? I’ve never have had issues with those not working correctly.
>>
>>43153745
It probably works exactly like it's supposed to but i just don't know how it works yet. The two functions are called mask and clip. I'll do some practice tonight and see if i can figure out how they work

That is a good idea.
I usually spend a lot of time staring at my own hand doing the pose over and over. But then I still have to actually understand what I'm looking at, and properly translate the shapes and construction back down onto the 2d image.
Maybe when tracing the actually correct hand shape and proportions, one can learn a bit of those proper shapes while physically drawing the correct lines as well?

Is there a good mane styling guide ponies use? When you look at stallions like Soarin his mane goes pretty low down the back of his neck like a real mane and mares like Older Fluttershy seem to have her mane pretty low as well
When doing more up-do styles like ponytails its a little awkward I find to make them look right

On this token i think im gonna try animation and throw my hand into it. I think if i just separate the character into different layers i can use the transform features to move the layers if the character between frames. I'll just have to think of the logistics of how to do this
>>
>>43157723
This works, but as I've learned it can make it look very robotic and is not good practice. It's harder but you'll get better results redrawing and flipping back and forth to make sure volume remains consistent.
>>43157368
I disagree. It's good to challenge your comfort zones, but it can be discouraging as a beginner to try to tackle too much at once.

I think this is an amazing leap, you are already working with textures and shading, I'd recommend looking at Marc Brunet's free brushes and his tutorial on how to use them because he has some nice painting brush sets + texture brushes which I think would help you a lot here when it comes to shading and texturing pieces
This is a really good place to work off of, I hope to see more by you in the future
>>
>>43157648
I really like it when the mane properly springs from all of the neck, like a proper horse mane.
It makes adapting human hairstyles a bit trickier, and even some of the show manestyles either cheat or just obscure where the hair is coming from, making adhering to such a rule harder.
I'm bad with making manes overall, and I sometimes fail to make pony hair anchor from and run down the neck, despite very much preferring that be the case.

I like your Flutters and her mane a lot.
>>
>>43157648
one thing that will probably help is to remember that ponies have a TON of 'volume' in their manes. Like the shape of the hair springs out further from the shape of the skull than you might expect. So the top of her mane and the area behind it with the pony tail could use a bit more size. That's the only thing I can nitpick about the mane itself, it's good

For me, art style is a combination of imagining, observing, habits and gimmicks
The easiest way to develop a style is to copy someone else's, that's when your observation skill comes into play

Maybe you have a favorite artist that had a particularly nice style and it stuck with you, and you wanted to borrow a few elements - some pieces to complete the puzzle that is your art style, then by all means, do it. Artists steal from each other all the time

Observing goes a long way - just by looking at art that you like will build your visual bank like crazy, and by having a large bank filled with key details will make it easier for you to encorporate them into your own art style

Habits - artists will always have some kind of familiarity in their art. I would say this is interchagable with gimmicks, since one is a deliberate act and the other is a natural occurance
Art style doesn't just correlate with how the final product looks like, it consists of a lot of smaller details that the common audience wouldn't bother noticing

For instance, an artist may use a particular set of brushes and will only use those brushes only, because they're the most comfortable to use for them (habit), and yet, the usage of those brushes comes from the fact that the artist may have been exposed with art that utilizes those tools, and wishes to learn how to draw as such (gimmick)

The artist may have a certain way of drawing something, like emphasis on some details that may or may not be very blatant in the artwork itself (gimmick), maybe they have a certain way of shading and coloring that they use in their artwork, etc etc. It's a very common observation on fetish and porn artists, that's why they have a such a recognizable style (not particularly related to appealingness)

Another way of noticing a sense of development to your art style is recognition - when someone realizes who you are just by art alone, even if you have little to no presence online
Although this requires some social engineering, exposing yourself to the internet general and the sacrifice of some of your privacy. It's hard to erase *everything* from the internet when you started posting, so tread with caution

If I was missing the point and the question asked how *to yourself* does it mean to develop an artstyle? Then I guess is to accept what your art is currently looking like and to work from there

Some people don't like how their own art looks like and ended up most of the time experimenting with different methods to better optimize it - while it is good to be flexible and trying out the best ways of fixing or improving what you have, it's also advisable to be comfortable with your own art style and not be too critical about it
>>
>>43162675
In the end, developing an art style comes to a loop of observing and copying, think of it as making a doll out of parts that you took from something or someone else, and no dolls will ever look the same to each other
Art style is everything you're most comfortable with sketching, drawing, rendering or painting; it's something that grows with you as you improve so there is no rush.

Yeah layer modes are weird. I think it's probably good practice to just pick colors yourself and do it manually.

Basically multiply layers just darken the layer below with the color tone of what you're using. Screen layers also work for the inverse of that, so you can do toned lighting. Then just change layer opacity for intensity. I use both of these when I'm not going for a whole-hog painted style.
