Album definitely coming
>>
>>121533139
i didn't think he would really get evil again. not sure if the beat works that well with his vocals desu, i think f1lthy's gotten a lot worse/less interesting since like 2018. album's probably gonna be called cold visions yeah?
>>

Nice
>>
>>121533156
He seems pretty depressed again. Last couple of projects, songs etc have had downright haunting lyrics. His verse on TLDR was very depressive.

You don't know what you're talking about
>>
>>121533536
no we don't he stopped being good before he even dropped an album. unless he's doing [zzzz] xxposed mirage forget wys type shit again i don't care. he was a good rapper he's not a good singer and the upper register doesn't suit him. old production was way more interesting too, all those gritty, warped textures to the synths and stuff. listen to the beautysleep bootleg it's his best
>>
>>121533767
With TLDR dropping new ecco would probably be him using his old voice.
>>
>>121533815
it was nice to hear him using that voice again but the lyrics feel like they've gone downhill too. maybe it's just that i was in high school when i was into the earlier stuff but it felt like much stronger imagery. he had some cool almost cyberpunk motifs that are mostly gone now. lines like "no iris black star and cross / powerline i hold the charge" and "drain angel stay under surveillance" have something to him his new stuff doesn't

Nah it’s so much more than WOD2. It feels like all his classics combined. Probably is his swan song to that old bladee. Not sure if it’s the end of his career would be weird to do at 30
>>
>>121538235
yeah easily. cant go out on a loss is pretty clear, also makes it sound like he knows his new music sucks and is doing one last good album lol
>>
TLDR is the best thing the boys have done in years. This album is hard so far. Yeah yeah they fell off, but I'm still gonna bump this album and thread.

>>121538239
like it or not, this sound has been done almost to death in the underground already and hearing bladee hop on it and not do much interesting for 30 similar sounding songs doesn't bode well for repeat listens. still better than troon bladee for sure tho
>>
It would be an amazing end to his legacy if this is his last album. He’s 30 now. You’ve got kids who are 15/16 that are beginning to define what’s popular. Half his fucking age. Bladee knows what’s up
>>
>>121538258
not weird if youre a rapper
time to move on and make some serious art!
>>
>>121538314
Yeah it’s not that original but bladee does it better than most and brings his unique vibe to it
>>
Bladee has come back like the second coming of christ. Those who follow him and treat him like a sheppard will be met with virtue. I praise my glorious sheppard, savior, and king of sweden
>>
>>121537974
I don't think this is done so intentionally. It feels more like he's spiraling back into some negative thoughts, drug use, and having been into some pretty gnostic ideas the past few years but seemingly unable to resolve material obsessions he seems lost, and turning 30 now probably feels like he's made no progress in life which is why he's back to feel so alienated and anxious as he was when making his old music. He's clearly developed a lot from that time though so this still feels very new, and I hope he feels better soon.
>>

Continue the legacy and drop some shit of your own please. Otherwise you'll just be another obsessed fan and that's it, you'll feel depressed when the room quiets down and you wonder could I be even more dope than Bladee or Kanye or THE BASEDGOD( well that's impossible to be more dope than Lil B but you can try). My advice is that most newbies and even veterans can get stuck in one or two genres and burn out creatively too quick. Look at Ye and how diverse he is, or how open minded Bladee is with noise, texture, and vocoder. Him SpaceGhost Purpp, Leandoer, Travis Scott, Cudi, and 808s & Heartbreak are why melody and singing became a focal point over rapping in their song structures. It's not that the lyrics weren't important they became more important as certain vowels and letter sounds were enunciated. But even most music geeks wouldn't have the courage to belt it out on a vocoder at even a run down DIY punk venue let alone at least a house show in someone's basement or whatevs. Just don't be a loser work hard unless creating shit ain't your gig

Not that anon but anyone who has tried releasing music knows how saturated the market is. Especially underground rap which now has the 90s alt rock effect of it no longer being underground and major labels creating industry plants.
If you want to make music just make it for musics sake, if you have thoughts of legacy and fame you will just be unhappy.

His descent into cringe has been miserable, I thought we would never get anything like his WOD collabs again outside of leaks like Anything. I don’t think so. TLDR makes me think they’ll drop a DG album as well.

>>
>>121539265
>>121539361
No matter how much I like Red Light, Icedancer, and even The Fool. Eversince is Bladees best album, maybe it's the association with a certain period of my life but regardless whenever I hear Sugar or Rip it makes me feel a way.
As a side note, I wish more of my friends were into DG. Never really had anyone to enjoy the peak years with.
>>
>>121540340
I liked TLDR but it was too forgettable. This album is different and way better for sure. I just don’t think Bladee is retiring, I was the guy who compared this album to The Cure’s Disintegration and I really meant it. I think he’s coming to terms with growing up and getting old, that’s why this entire album seems like a homage to everything he has done before, it’s like his last “young” album.
>>
>>121540340
tldr felt like them returning to an older style but on autopilot. was exciting in what it represented but the song itself wasn't that good besides ecco's verse

Yeah I was obsessed with DGSBE throughout all my teenage years (2016-2022) with zero friends to share it with. At this point Eversince almost hits too hard for me since he's talking about his wasted youth as a depressed loner. I thought it was beautiful when I was 14 but now it's too sad to listen often. Red Light and Icedancer are the ones I can listen to forever
>>
>>121541059
It’s kinda fucked he always talks about how he’s lost hope/his life is going nowhere/etc

He’s a world renowned artist and subcultural icon who does whatever he wants all day and is probably rich. What does that make me?

>>121541266
When he dropped Eversince he had 10-20k spotify listeners and not enough music money to live off of. He spent the previous few years only being known for association with yung lean, and then he witnessed his mental break+Barron's death in Miami firsthand. It's pretty easy to understand his angst leading up to Eversince. He seemed much less depressed by the next year when he solidified his cult following

Unironically a lot of his lyrics are really good. There's a lot of variety to his work and each album feels very distinct from the last and has its own identity, some of his lyrics are really funny and comedic, some are abstract, some are haunting and very depressive. He's a pretty interesting writer ngl and there's a lot to chew on with some of his tracks and he keeps on building this 'drain mythology' with each album building on the last and adding more and more to 'drain gang' it's very cool.

it's interesting, revisiting the lyrics from both bladee and ecco i loved when i was in high school the ecco ones feel really weak, overwrought, cliched, etc. but the bladee ones pretty much all hold up. when i was younger both seemed cool to me in the same way but bladee had channeled something much more lasting than just the superficial coolness

ecco has sucked since like 2018. weak lyrics, banal themes. i believe he thinks he's making the music with love and that's worse because it means he's really this shallow and midwitted
>>
>>121547238
youre describing f1lthy
>>
>>121547271
>weak lyrics
>banal themes
did you really hear PXE? did you even understand it? did you understand the sensibility with which he produces his songs? did you analyze the lyrics? i don't think so.

saying that the worst song off this album is better than ecco’s entire discography is the most retarded thing i've read in years
>>
>>121547352
They don't care, they just hate cuz he started singing in a high pitched tone so they make up some bullshit about weak lyrics and banality when PXE was nothing like that.
>>
>>121547352
yes man i was the biggest ecco dickrider for years and then i graduated from high school. pxe is
>be yourself!
>fuck what everyone else thinks!
>you don't need to conform to society!
>exist in the world rather than in your own head (this one's actually good)
the art direction is cool and some of the sounds are interesting but these are very basic themes and the songwriting is forgettable. do you like read books at all? i feel like you're attributing way too much depth to the themes in his music because you've never seen the very basic themes of struggle with identity and interiority vs exteriority explored anywhere else

I don't like sad evil Bladee anymore. I'm too old for this.
>>
>>121547434
oh yeah that's another thing, the high pitched voice sounds bad! it sounds strained and it lacks the expressiveness he had singing in his (natural) lower register. he has less melodic range now and he was also just a better rapper than he is a singer. losing the more rhythmic element of his vocals hurts his music a lot

so music for you is only about lyrics? what are you even saying. what i'm describing is the sensibility of the music he produces. the lyrics combined with the music is an experience.
what do you expect from him? singing about the critique of pure reason? music has a lot of ways to communicate sentiments an ideas
>>
>>121547480
some of us are still sad
>>
>>121547446
Provide some examples for themes you would find better and more complex.
>>
I think this is a very creative album. I love how some of the tracks combine very funny laugh out loud lyrics with really dark themes.
Bladee is too funny man, the whole 'I'm old' shtick with him turning 30 on this album and on Don't Wanna Hang Out with "I was kinda the CEO you know" like he's some old ass guy telling a couple of kids how "you know I was actually the CEO of this Drain Gang thing back in the day" that's fucking funny man
>>
>>121547541
i'm a music > lyrics guy but my original post (>>121546962) was about lyrics so that's the direction i was thinking from, and specifically a direction in which bladee's music holds up far better than ecco's with time. in terms of the overall sentiment i agree he had something really special on his old stuff. i would get legit goosebumps listening to beautysleep and reading the lyrics. felt like world-creation through his music. the gritty hollow synth sounds and weird percussion and everything drowned in reverb was really special. nothing on e or pxe comes close to that just on novelty of sounds besides a couple of the gud tracks (cc, blue eyes) and aaa powerline. i can relate more to this now than ever, i've had a lot of nights of k-holing and feeling my identity fracture and yet the last time i felt that unity of lyrics and sound from him in a way that affected me was when the aaa powerline single dropped.
to be clear bladee fell off hard too but this album is far better than anything he's done since at least the fool. this isn't just another bladee album, it's cannibalizing all his past work, feels like an anti-greatest hits. his lyrics on this are more tongue-in-cheek than ever before and i think it's intentionally supposed to play on the fact that so many fans have wanted a return to a trap sound from him and he's giving it to them in an intentional strange, warped way. haven't fully thought this through but there's clearly a lot more to this than it seems, i was disappointed on first listen but reading the lyrics there's a clear irony or even like fatalism to the whole thing. assuming it's his last album it's like the opposite of a triumphant ending.
>>
It's interesting how he deliberately uses incorrect grammar in some lines.

Bladee is like the Swedish Lil B and I mean that in the best way possible. The lyrics are so damn goofy at times. It's essentially a dark comedy album. Something else that still makes me laugh is everyone in drain gang saying "yep, bladee was struck by lightning in thailand" and refusing to elaborate.
>>
>>121548108
>comedy album
I wouldn't really go that far. He's just pretty witty when it comes to writing, but a lot of it is very genuine too eg. DONT DO DRUGZ
>>
>>121548144
Yeah I'm exaggerating a bit. Do agree there are a lot of moments where he reveals his genuine emotions or turmoil. But there is a very comedic element. The man talks about getting a Sad Meal at McDonald's and calls himself autistic for keeping it real

hip hop isn't really cool anymore, he rode the last wave of hip hop the way the post-punk bands rode the last wave of punk's real relevancy (in fact I see bladee very much a Morrissey figure and as an 'anti-hip hop' artist in that he completely subverted classic hip hop by making it introspective, weird, and self-consciously deprecating). The fact that he appears in corpse paint for the intro mv on this album shows he knows it's over. He could make some punk (like lean) and black metal crossover records and pursue his painting career. His contribution to late-stage hip hop is certified and evergreen.
>>
>>121548947
No, I've been shit posting about bladee forever. The story doesn't make sense. They were in a situation where he couldn't go to the hospital? Bladee had a near death experience but I think it was od not a lightening strike. Although lightning is more fitting so print the legend, as the cliche goes. I'm just glad evil bladee came back one last time.

You know I was gonna talk shit on you for this but then I thought about it for a bit and realized that even the underground scene now and the underground rap sounds on soundcloud have been picked up by labels now and are getting 'gentrified' and it might actually be over, at least this wave of rap. There'll definitely be another new one probably sooner rather than later because everything moves so fast now and any kid with a laptop could potentially be the next drain gang.
I feel like 1c, Xaviersobased, hi-c etc. are that slightly newer wave after drain gang, sadboys, black kray and goth money records. But it seems like the mainstream might be picking up on that jerk sound pretty quick if general audiences take to it. It's been used in some mainstream tracks I think, at least so I've been told.

I was thinking it was like Illmatic earlier, in that it's a series of stream of consciousness portraits of dejected, isolated modern urban life. I don't think it has the stand out catchy songs of Illmatic though. It's too abstract and grotesque for that. Bladee is an extremely introverted artist, there is almost zero wider social consciousness beyond the awkwardness and alienation of having to exist in a social world as an estranged loner; whereas by comparison Illmatic is consciously social. I agree though if you put the emphasis on "personal" as it's a more interiorised landscape of what Illmatic does for the NY landscape.

garbage
>>
>>121555111
My initial reaction was that it was actually too bleak. But I think that earlier anon who found the comedic side to it is actually on the right track. You have to remember that at this point"bladee" is practically a stage character and a self-made legend with its own mythical background. There's a tongue in cheek to this album that isn't obvious. His early works are the most sincere, but even those had plenty of self-parody and character acting in them.

i like how this is left intentionally impossible to answer, because in the most literal sense EVERYTHING that can be thought or comprehended that wasnt previously listed is up for grabs. every artist talks about what they want and subject matter is varying(and impossible to enumerate)- which makes it that much worse that ecco goes for the most trite and run through bullshit possible. you can smugly pretend like a rolodex of "complex themes" for you to to critique needs to exist to justify the criticism but it doesnt really- its objectively not stimulating to hear the same shit you get from any other artist or media. anyway, examples of themes that would be better than what was previously listed is anything not previously listed

yes, it's why my initial reaction to this was negative. I like his more mature work since EXETER, and this initially sounds like a rejection of that to relive his pre-EXETER days. I think he's done it very self-consciously though and he's expressing his anxiety here about his image and legacy. The redditors who think this is a return to form ("WE'RE SO BACK XD") piss me off.
>>
>>121567534
F1lthy and ripsquad are decent but whitearmor is a true genius and poet and the Marr to bladee's Morrissey. I even used to think bladee was unworthy of whitearmor's talent, but later saw how they build on each other.

ripsquad just produces above par modern beats for bladee to rap over, with some nice twists here and there (it's good I like it). whereas whitearmor actually challenges bladee's range as a writer and a performer. I don't think he ever misses, he's just on another level to the average hip hop producer so a lot of what he does goes over people's heads.

nah i would say it is a high point for sure, especially the production at least in terms of being interesting and new. it doesnt sound all shiny and clean like The Fool, but the album itself a lot darker than his other recent stuff so if fits.
i still wouldn't say this is the first bladee album people should check out if they just want to see what he's about though. i would recommend eversince, icedancer, or The Fool as an intro

eversince is how i got my bf into bladee, and it makes sense as a gateway since its so hard on depressive themes which are more universally understanable. but i always think with bladee its worthwhile to like his other shit like gluee or even redlight, or any number of solo tracks like into dust. everysince is almost too comfortable, it makes too much sense to be your expectation for bladee since the rest of his work isnt really like that (eveyething else is far more varied and not as self contained )
>>
>>121567835
>The redditors who think this is a return to form ("WE'RE SO BACK XD") piss me off.
plebbit niggers obsessed with ecco and pela (before e) and e after that are the bulwark behind pushing bladee into hyperpop (or at least fueling it by eating it up) they also hyped rs/ f1lthy after icedancer and the prevalence of these two influences are what has marked bladees descent. its always been plebbit pushing both these. they larp as drain but they arent and are the ones who encouraged bladee to keep on the path after icedancer (funny friends edit!! im drain guys!!111!!! im drain!!!1!!!)

this album very clearly doesnt stray very far from bladee post 2018, so why anyone would actually believe "le evil bladee is back!!" is retarded. we have sherman which is good, maybe if bladee puts out more it will be sherm and wa and we might get close to a return to form. this is only a small step, and it feels more like lean influenced change than anything. like its the drain verse recolliding with sbe

i still legit cannot believe that we're getting bladee lyricism like this in 2024. it definitely is a return in some ways, but he's coming back to his older sensibilities changed and more mature. he's dropping bars about how every rapper out now is his son because it's true, and it's obviously true. the evil drug addict intensity is even stronger now that he has like religious neuroses and he's actively chosen to fall back into pessimism and hate from "enlightenment". he's also referencing lyrics from all over his career, memes that he spawned, etc. it's his most self-aware album by a LOT. insane album and i had genuinely just stopped listening to new bladee a while back

You don't choose to fall back into depression. You're taking away the wrong lessons from this project imo.
>>
>>121581110
you're right, i didn't mean actively chosen. more just intending to emphasize that this feels like the opposite of "the light is brighter after the darkness", that after achieving some feeling of clarity falling back into depression and bad habits feels far more oppressive and that's manifested in the music. also just that the very dark headspace is where i'm at right now and it's cool that i can identify so much with this even if it's objectively not a good mindset to glorify

Loss and gain is a consistent subject across drain gang albums. Bladee going through a dark period is offset by the knowledge he has gained over the years. Like in 'Message To Myself', he is telling himself to stop being a bitch because the past has shown that he worked through the bad and excelled.

Anyone here also make music? I got interested in making music because of dg, I feel like it's the first truly productive and creative outlet and hobby I've had in my life, but I don't have any friends at all so I'm just making stuff by myself and not uploading anything anywhere.

Back 2 Life was pretty mid because Loesoe dropped the ball on production, but the ripsquad tracks save the album and True Love > The Kingdom > 3 Star Reunite > Mr. CEO are some of Thaiboy's best tracks and arguably the best 4 track run across any of his albums.
What did you think about Back 2 Life? I still go back to those 4 tracks a lot.

All the Way is also pretty great, and Alive is decent

you should check out inspiration from 90s and 00s UK scene — jungle, garage, dnb, dub etc — for inspiration. Whitearmor was influenced by Burial and Enya early on.

I like it a lot and the production overall is smooth and aesthetically pleasing imo. I think it's a coherent work.

there are semi regular production threads on this board so look out for them or make one yourself. check the archives too. I guess there are discords for producers too but you'll have to hunt for them because I'm not a producer.

I agree that it's coherent, but for me a lot of the slower songs are just pretty boring for me to listen to.
