There any reason to upgrade from a Squier Tele thinline? It has a good tone, stays in tune, very playable and I like it a lot (after getting it setup). Is a Fender a significant step up for jams and small gigs?

>In his early days, Collins worked as a paint mixer and truck driver to make ends meet.[52] In 1971, when he was 39 years old, he worked in construction, since he could not make a proper living from his music. One of his construction jobs was a remodeling project for Neil Diamond.[53] He continued with this type of work until the late 1970s,[54] when his wife, Gwen, talked him into returning to a career in music.[55]

Strats. I always go back to Strats, I buy other guitars and once the honeymoon phase is over they end up just sitting there while I continue to go back to my Strats. I keep a Tele around for the specific bridge pickup sound but other than that Strats just feel the most natural to me. Yeah they’re boring and basic but I don’t care.
>>
>>121554770
>The logo is deeply embarassing
honestly i respect Squier more than current MIM. i see fender with black plastic truss rod hole, that is what I consider embarrassing. they are btfo by every other brand at 850 dollars. at least the Squier player is a value chad, and CV Squiers are legit good for their price point. way better than the OLD MIM Standards, maybe not technically as good as the Player Series but within reach and cost less than half the price
>Thinlines are gay as fuck
true, hella gay
>>
>>121556429
>Not as good as a tube amp
it really depends, cheap tube amps are way worse than BOSS Katana. I'd say any tube amp that costs equal or less than a Katana is going to sound way worse. Truth is Katanas are fucking goated, and 99 percent of /gg/ would see no benefit from a real tube amp because you're all apartment dwelling pedalfags that can't go louder than whisper volume
>>
>>121556638
>tim pool bass
>>
>>121556693
Yeah I definitely love my Strat and play it all the time. It’s basic but also there are certain tones you can’t get anywhere else. I’d say I play both the Strat and JM equally. I tend to switch between all my guitars daily, keeps things interesting
>>
>>121557089
I have a lot of guitars too but I tend to wife one up for months while the others go neglected. I wish I had an excalibur, just ONE guitar that would be the one forever
>>
>>121557077
Playing without pedals is gay as aids. Might as well play a fucking acoustic guitar normalfag
>>
>>121556402
It's for real. The only people who will disagree are 1975 boomers who are still stuck in the 80s or who worship too many 'gurus' without trying things out themselves. It's not the 30s anymore, and tech has progressed to the point that more-than-decent amps come out at all price points. More importantly, it's not some fragile tube system that will need $550 in service from a tech every 18 months.
>>
>>121557077
>that can't go louder than whisper volume
and yet i still need a half stack because...b-because i just do, okay????
>>
>>121557111
Yeah I enjoy having a lot of tones and vibes, can’t realistically see myself ever finding the one but I sure as fuck try. Eventually I’ll get a 335, an SG, and a Rick and be done.

>>
>>121557089
I just really love Strats. It’s like I can play them without even thinking about it, like they’re an extension of my body. That sounds retarded but I don’t know how else to describe it. Every other guitar I’ve had even if I really liked them it’s was always like I was still consciously aware of the guitar that I was playing but with Stratocasters it’s like the guitar disappears. I don’t know how to describe it and that sounds gay. They just click for me in a way that other guitars don’t even if I really love the other guitars. I love my Tele and I loved my Jazzmaster but they’ve just never felt as effortless as a Strat for me.

Lots of big name people play Strats but that doesn’t matter to me, but definitely my favorite big name Strat player is Rory Gallagher. When I was a teenager my dad loved him and he was the first Strat player that made me specifically want a Stratocaster.
>>
>>121556693
The strats fretboard is way narrower than a jazzmasters. It makes complex chords more annoying- specifically partial barring where you need to double-joint bend a finger and want the string below it to ring clearly. It's way easier to keep things muted on a narrow neck though.
>>
>>121557627
me but with strats.
nut width is too narrow for my chunky (not obese) fingers
>>
>>121557634
I feel exaclty the same but with my tele
Very interesting sensation. It also allows me to play faster for some reason. Maybe it's just blessed
>>
>>121557627
none of the classic electric gibsons consider ergonomics at all. Leo Fender prioritized that.
but honestly, Explorers are hella comfortable
Les Pauls and SG's are both really uncomfortable to play sitting or standing
My Les Paul would make my forearm bleed
Never owned an SG but it was my favorite looking guitar and I always thought I wanted one until I played one and just couldn't get over how uncomfortable it was
>>
>>121557026
Idk I never had a standard before. Both of my fenders were players series. Back when I got them they hadn't adjusted the price levels yet and doubled the price of bean fenders and squires were still absolute dogshit on par with starcasters.
>>
>>121557114
Pedals are just what people use to cover up a lack of theory. Why learn more chords when you can buy a different noise and then continue playing roots and fifths
>>
>>121557645
>The strats fretboard is way narrower than a jazzmasters
this is not true, where'd you hear that?
>>
>>121557662

BUT

It’s really cool having a guitar/style of guitar that just meshes so well with you. It’s nice having a specific guitar or maybe multiples of the same kind of guitar that you just know you can pick up and work without even thinking about it, like the guitar doesn’t fight you in any way whatsoever. It’s a really cool feeling when you “find” your guitar. Like yeah other guitars are cool and it’s fun owning and playing other guitars but knowing that you can just pick up the old faithful one and know it inside and out and just almost subconsciously work with it is a really cool thing.
>>
>>121557694
Maybe it's my strat because I got a special edition but the string separation at the first position is way narrower. I have something like a texas or lonestar or something like that that came with two texas special hot pickups and a seymour duncan pearly gates. I think the neck might be 70s style and have a more curved radius or something
>>
>>121557771

>>
>>121557114
I have hella pedals but I'm not a pedalfag. I don't even know, at least 27. there are 13 on my board. But when I say pedalfag I mean people who use so much effects at all times, "shoegayzers", that it sounds like a synth. Don't get me wrong, I own 4 big muffs, I have an EHX microsynth, I have some wacky ass shit but what's the point in having a 2000 dollar Fender Amp if you just make your guitar sound like a Sega Genesis with shit 24/7?
The benefits of a good quality tube amp are completely lost on someone who never plays clean or with just light OD
Despite me having a bunch of wacky effects, 99 percent of the time I'm playing guitar I prefer it to sound like an electric guitar

vintage fenders you had a choice between a (roughly 41mm) and b (42mm)
I have a tele with 43mm but most of the fenders I've owned have been 42mm and I think it was in the 90's when all (USA) fenders were 42mm for the most poart
bridge spacing was different on vintage too, modern USA fenders are a bit wider at the bridge and the MIM and Squiers were more narrow
currently player series has jumped to the old Am STD string spacing at bridge, but squier is still a bit narrower at the bridge
>>

it was like 90 degrees outside, he was forced into garage by wife and ordered pizza
I was like, "hey cool guitar what is that?"
he was like, "it's a heritage... it's made in the original Gibson factory"
I told him that I was a player too and that I played a strat and actually had a show that night at a bar
he just nodded real fast, handed me the money and 5 dollar tip
He was so mad that I was in my 20's, had long hair, was stoned

The price of guitars is crazy. I thought it was a buyer's market.
>>
>>121557838
Yeah I agree with that. I got a microcosm last year and am selling that shit, it turns your guitar into something completely different and it takes over your tone entirely. It’s cool for 2 weeks.

My other pedals are just reverbs, delays, drives. Couple modulation pedals. Some stuff is definitely weirder and gives my tone a different flavor but I want absolutely nothing to do with a pedal that totally departs from what an electric guitar should sound like

Hey I've used Reverb before too. My number one is from Reverb but I absolutely overpaid.
Truthfully I haven't bought a pawn shop/cl guitar in 10 years so I might be wrong
I once got an American Standard strat for 250 dollars at a pawn shop (they had it listed for 400 and I pointed out that they had changed the bridge pickuip) and the pickup was a fucking Dimarzio humbucker lmao.
Unfortunately nowadays pawn shops are pretty much dead because they all just open REVERB shops and anything that isn't a squier/epiphone never touches the floor because they can go on reverb and sell for premium
i mean motherfuckers are paying 500 dollars on reverb for squier strats with rosewood fingerboards
because of Joe Biden
>>

>Unfortunately nowadays pawn shops are pretty much dead because they all just open REVERB shops and anything that isn't a squier/epiphone never touches the floor because they can go on reverb and sell for premium
kek both of the mentioned shops just have a bunch of cheap $200 squire shit on the walls.
>>
>>121560024
you know more often than not you can offer 50 percent and they'll take it. the pawn shops will give you maybe 50 bucks for a squier strat. they put it on floor for 200 offer 100 they don't give a shit, that's 100 percent profit
>>

I hate you. My dream is finding an Epiphone sold by the family of a guy who wired in a PAF and then died.
>>
>>121560080
I'm just done with cheap little $200 guitars, I bend too hard and they wear out. Just not worth upgrading them.
>>

>>
I am finally figuring out the fucking fretboard. Jesus Christ what a nightmare instrument this is. I cannot think of a less logical way to create music
>>
>>121560197
It is actually genius once you get past the initial curve. Also if you are a fag you could just tune the entire guitar to 4ths or something to make it brainless like a bass/violin/cello
>>
>>121560197
Yeah until you have to transpose something. I can play anything in C Major on a keyboard, but fuck if I can play that thing in D Major without having to practice
On guitar, the shapes are goofy but they are the same in every key
Transposing is really really fuckin easy compared to keyboards
>>
>>121560241
god this, on keyboard you have different fingerings for each hand, and for each scale. its a fucking nightmare but you HAVE to use the correct fingerings otherwise you will plateau
>>
>>121560241
Yeah but on the piano there is only a single place on the keyboard for each note. That trumps every single advantage the guitar has because you can play the exact same fucking note in a billion different locations which makes it infinitely more complex than just learning the scales and chords on the keyboard once
>>
>>121560336
idk, my first musical venture was on my family's hammond organ as a kid. I figured out a bunch of tunes I started guitar at 11 and after a couple years I got pretty good. Today, I can say confidently I'm in the top 15 percent of guitar players but I'm only top 40 percent of key players Guitar is way easier to me. After you learn the 3nps major scale in all modes, it's just fucking coasting.
It's not even visual after that, you just feel it

Weird to think what top 15% actually is. Like of every single guitarist how good is that? I have virtually no vocabulary whatsoever as a soloist and just noodle around with arpeggios and little approach notes and blue notes and shit. I don’t memorize licks or transcribe or any shit like that that would actually get me good at lead guitar. My technique is random and unpolished. But I can learn songs and parts extremely fast and I have a really good feel from playing bass for many years. I’m also getting a lot better the past year. I’d say I’m moving up to the 50th percentile from the 75th percentile off pure musical talent and not even really being a dedicated guitarist at all. All of my normie friends and even some amateur musicians think I’m good as shit at it.

Top 15% to me seems like approaching a pro level guitarist who isn’t necessarily pro. Like the gap from 50% to 20% is probably a shitload easier to close than the gap from 15% to 10%. I know a lot of guys in the 15%-20% zone, a handful around 10% and then a couple dudes who are definitely top 2-3% guitarists out there, with the 1% being the very best guitarists alive.

the Novo by miles. Makes the others feel cheap even though they’re all American made and great guitars. The Novo and the Les Paul are in their own category far above everything else.

Jaguar would be number 2 offset because it sounds amazing even though the Jazzmaster plays better. Once I upgrade the Jazzmaster pickups away from those damn V-Mod II’s it’ll be a lot tougher to decide which I prefer.

I love them all though, they all have their place and I play them all regularly. But if I had to pick a single guitar to do everything it is the Serus J.
>>
>>121561299
how do you feel about the Novo looking retarded? does design not factor into your opinion at all? I think it's hideous.

Anyone know if the Boss Katana pedalboard can configured as a collection of stomp boxes, or is it just a mess of amp presets like most modeler boards?
It would be neat if I could just have my basic tone, then the entire board builds off that tone as a traditional stomp box pedalboard would.
I'd have overdrive, dirt, delay, reverb, etc - on top of the original tone in ANY combination. Rathar than building a massive preset library with EVERY combination.
I'm pretty sure the answer is no but what if

I want to learn how to play guitar or bass, thinking about getting a Yamaha 112 or a trbx 174. Also is a katana mini fine for learning I'm my garage? Never played before

Yes the Yamaha Pacifica is an outstanding budget beginner guitar that will last you well into your intermediate years should you keep playing and the Katana is a great budget amp.

My entire personality is based on lame laffy taffy wrapper tier jokes and when they flop it hurts but when they land it makes me feel good

Just keep in mind that a portable amp will sound shitty compared to something bigger, even at casual levels. Unless the portability is important to you then get something that needs plugging in.

Would a Roland cube x30 be better then? Found a used 112vmx and that for 350. With a bags too

Yeah. The modelling on the roland doesn't sound that great (basing this on youtube demos) but you've got more power and a bigger speaker, so you can just make up for that with pedals later down the line.

All that for $350 is a good deal. The guitars alone are around that much new and Yamaha guitars are very good, I’d take a budget Pacifica over anything else in its price range any day.

Read the add incorrectly, he's selling the amp separately for 150. Also are the 112j and 112v noticibly different? Or should I go for the cheaper and save for the amp

The V has better pickups but for a beginner you’re not going to notice that. I’d get the J for less money and put the rest toward the amp. The V isn’t that much more but still, if you decide you like playing guitar even the J will last you a while and if you ever need to upgrade you can just buy a new guitar and sell the J to some other beginner to keep the cycle going.
