ITT albums that were literally a decade ahead of their time and it blows your mind that they came out when they actually did
>>
REM was basically doing alt rock 10 years before it was mainstream.
>>
Surfer Rosa and Doolittle
Destroy Erase Improve
Hell Awaits
>>
Downward Spiral for sure

The first track is literally post-punk before punk was even a thing.

When I first got into Blossom Dearie I thought that she was a contemporary artist trying to sound like someone from the 50's.
>>

ITT: Zoomers who think good music didn't exist before 2000
>>
>>121594741
that's not what post punk sounds like.
>>
>>121594896
I think most Zoomers are aware that music has been worse for most of the time that we've been alive than before. That's ehy most Pet Sounds Era Beach Boys Fans, most Krautrock listeners,a significant portion of Beatles Fans, and most Prog nerds are zoomers at this point. Also the zoomer obsessions with Black Metal and Nu Metal and Pop-Punk and Shoegaze are all very "oh God oh fuck let's just return music to how it was in the 90s".
>>
>>121595006
It's not really. I'd argue Krautrock is closer to extreme metal than anything it's just that people in those countries view extreme metal as being conservative or right leaning and "kosmiche musik" partially because it tied into both African American Music and what Brits were doing was seen as being about cultural understanding and enlightenment and all that stuff so they'll never in 100 years admit it but some of the guitar work and thematics share more obvious similarities to Thrash Metal or Black Metal. Amon Düül ii maybe moreso than CAN on that idk but still.

This unironically does sound like a ~1979 post punk album.
>>
Didn't think I'd be posting this today.
>>
>>121594896
no, you're a fucking retard who doesn't realize OP's talking about an early '80s album that sounds like a '90s alternative band, YOU FUCKING RETARD
>>
>>121594312
It's always bizarre to me when I listen to early 80s REM and it sounds right at home in the 90s.

>>121594648
>>121594725
The only other album that sounded like Murmur before Murmur was Chronic Town, and that was REM's first EP. They were very open about the Byrds influencing their style of guitar playing but that's where the similarities end, the Byrds are clearly a 60s group while early REM feels strangely at home in the 90s.
>>
>>121595339
80s REM could not sound more 80s if it tried.
>>
>>121595354
I strongly disagree, especially around the time that they changed up their style and gave Stipe clearer line reads they sound very much like an early 90s alt rock band. Document in particular is a very clear turning point but it goes all the way back to Murmur.
>>
>>121594287
It's just generic guitar shit
>>
>>121595539
Ok zoomer.
>>
>>121595354
Nah 80s REM was a very clear blueprint for where 90s rock music would go. Everyone from Nirvana to Radiohead to Pixies to Smashing Pumpkins cited them as a direct influence.
>>
Always striking how trap music sounds like this album more and more as time goes on. Specifically the plugg sound

It sounds so fresh, I thought this was some kind of hoax. Everything from the cover, singing, audio quality, guitar playing feels like a 2017 Japanese concept album that you discovered on YT

Came to post this. Probably the clearest case in rock. Except maybe TVU&N.

Picrel was the basis for much of commercial hip-hop in the 2010s.

>>121594312
R.E.M up to and through 1986-89 are unimpeachable. Life's Rich Pageant is the best alternative rock album ever made.

>Life's Rich Pageant is the best alternative rock album ever made.
oh dang you've heard every alternate rock album ever made? that's legit impressive

Yeah I listened to em all over again right before I made that post just to be sure I wasn't speaking out of turn. LRP's the best one. Verification not required

>>121597348
Every man has struggles living up to societal expectations. So it's like, you are somehwere between the idealized expectation and the little girl. The little girl is just the dramaticized shadow of what you're not. And alternative rock is about like, "fuck societal expectations anyway". So it's like i am a man but in some ways i am childish and in some ways i am effeminate
>>
>>121597738
Unironically every kanye album was ahead of its time and influenced the landscape of rap, in one way or another. Even his last couple of albums, which were mostly shit music, which most of the current rap/hip-hop landscape is built on.

>>
1968
>>
>>121595339
I'd argue REM kept their core sound from Chronic Town to Life's Rich Pageant, then changed sound with Document, then worked into the early 90s with a more mainstream production and sound, until they ironically put out a grunge rock album, until one final "band" album with NAIHF with a 90s modern rock sound. Then the difficult, weird Up and their waning final albums, with extremely mixed results. Weird gow they started off so ahead the curve, then just kind of slowed down until they were contemporary, then just kind of rambled off by the 2000s.

why those years? Chronic-Murmur-Reckoning is the peak before they started transitioning to what brought them commercial success. fables and pageant are both holdovers of that but by document it's gone.

but R.E.M. actually made good music
