>>121719625Might give the Enigma Variations a listen after this Mendelssohn symphony ends.
>>121719676You know he wrote a whole bunch of other stuff, right?
>>121719704It takes melodic and rhythmic inspiration from Scottish folk dance, particularly in the second movement. Also, Mendelssohn's love of Scottish landscapes gave rise to the opening theme.
>>121719849lol yes. I love his violin and cello concertos, and really like his chamber music and symphonies 1 and 2. And yet I haven't listened to the Enigma Variations before!
now playing
>>121719938Oh well better get on it. Nimrod is one of the most heroic and hopeful movements.
>>121719831Sounds like a good problem to have! I suppose I'm still too fresh to have classical music get stuck in my head like that and play on an internal rotation but someday...
>>121719970Where are you getting your recs from?
>>121720015Based on your posting style, I think you :)If I'm wrong, then another anon here put me onto Previn's Elgar.
>>121720028No, I never get into the weeds with recordings unless I especially like the piece. I would have no idea what to recommend.
>>121720060Oh. Yeah I discussed Elgar with another anon here a couple weeks back or so and he recommended me Previn for the symphonies and Enigma Variations. Otherwise I check Amazon reviews and compare it to conductors I'm somewhat familiar with, or ask on here if I'm really unsure.
>>121720001Hmm based on the number of plays, I wonder which one it is! Haha, seems to be a favorite, looking forward to it.
>>121719704Okay yeah, this is extremely Scottish. I guess I was just retarded the last time I heard it. Could have been in my first couple years of listening to classical.
Brahmshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xo2-pDXEUd0
Gonna let this recording keep playing into the Elgar Pomp and Circumstance Marches.
https://vocaroo.com/1jRFamwfcQU2Can I get some feedback on this composition I made?
>>121719970this slaps fr fr
>>121720410Ayy, you're giving it a listen too? Yeah it's pretty great, definitely gonna be the recording I recommend for the work.
>>121720407rather putrid
>>121720495You're just being you but don't be too harsh on the anon putting himself out there, please.
>>121720433yeah man this is melting my face off its so good. That Tchaikovsky no. 6 last thread was great to.
>>121720523totally retarded
>>121720598Glad to hear! I don't know if you saw my other rec but I think you'd really like this too:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UqxWHQA4U4
>>121720638I will put it on after...this just started Tchaikovsky No 5. I found it on cd at the thrift store today. Conducted by Ormandy, who I think you recommended.
>>121720894Awesome! Enjoy.
>>121720894Also, next time you're bargain bin shopping, this is a great list to consult for the greatest and essential classical music:https://www.talkclassical.com/threads/compilation-of-the-tc-top-recommended-lists.17996/
now playingGran Partita
>>121720904David Axelrod - Songs of Experience is one of my favourite records of all time. It's not classical but instrumental. I got a similar vibe from Elgar because the music felt very propulsive at time and then moody at others.
>>121721013not sure what this has to do with /classical/, maybe try >>>/mu/ instead?
>>121720949thanks, much appreciated. its a lot of new names to keep track of.>>121721013stfu I am hinting at suggestions for things that sound like Elgar based on some weird stoner record I like.
>>121721226not sure what this has to do with /classical/, maybe try >>>/mu/ instead?
>>121720407>Composition I made>Hisss Why? You think that makes it sound more legitimate?
>>121721226What I would do is if you come across a composer you think you recognize in the bargain bin, just ctrl+f on that page and see if it pops up. That's pretty much the tactic I use whenever I'm not sure what to listen to, and feel like further exploring a specific composer.>>121721013I only listen to classical these days but I'm unfamiliar with that album. But yeah, the great classical pieces are rarely one shade of emotion, but rather generally a longer, shifting dramatic narrative of triumph, loss, exasperation, love, sadness, joy, God, divine goodness or the lack thereof, and so on.
>>121721319lmaoThe word 'hiss' makes me laugh so hard now. hissssss
>>121720407Sounds like action movie music.
Is she based or cringe?
>>121721416you already posted this shit last thread dipshit
now playingCall me a pleb but K.361 was boring.
>>121721327It's going to be a good resource for sure. I have been digging in bins for music all my life. Half the fun is taking chances on stuff.Today I grabbed Beethoven Piano Concerto 5 and 2 on London. Based on liking the cover and knowing Beethoven's name and London/Decca being a real label. Also grabbed a Claudio Arrau cd on Philips because I read that one of his recordings was the first consumer musical cd ever produced. He must be hot shit to get that honor.Passed on a Bruckner symphony and when I check that site its one of his least popular. It was most likely mid af and Im glad I didnt give money for it.
>>121721539insanely retarded
>>121721449Not much discussion as we were at the end, sar
>>121721596no one cares
>>121721539Well, keep in mind that any work on that site's list is considered great. However, yes, the closer to get to the bottom, the higher likelihood that it is that it will be 'mid.' Still, for $1, if it appears on their lists I'd just pick it up. Definitely check out Bruckner at some point, preferably the Jochum recordings. And hell yeah on those other pickups. Who's the performer(s) for the Beethoven? And Arrau is pretty good no doubt.
>>121721463Not familiar with it but there are a lot of boring Mozart pieces, so I won't call you a pleb.
>>121721617Then why are you generating discussion about it?
>>121721641It's the Serenade no. 10, I think it's considered one of his great works. I agree with you, when I like Mozart I really like him but so much of his music is, for me, in that category of 'excellent craft, boring listen,' hence the bracing for the pleb accusations.
>>121721620arrau sucks cock>>121721671retarded and delusional
>>121721620Beethoven - Vladimir Ashkenazy.I will keep checking back every couple of weeks. As for Bruckner it might have been left behind because it wasn't a name I knew like the others. I was trying to stick to stuff in good shape and didn't look like a cd you'd find on sale at the gas station.
now playingSo I know I've been fanboying over Kovacevich for a few days about his Beethoven and Brahms, however, his Schubert D. 960 is without a doubt the best I have ever heard.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAZ8PA5_gVA (should be from the same recording I'm listening to)warning: may cause one's heart to swell and one's soul to sit on the edge of the precipice of the void of being before rising into the grace of God>>121721951Ashkenazy playing the piano and Solti conducting the orchestra! Pretty sure I've heard that recording, you're in for a treat! The no. 2 is pretty good, and the 5, 'Emperor,' is one of the great piano concerto masterpieces.
>>121721951Also that album cover looks like they ripped it from an old MS-DOS RPG lol, like The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. Gives it some character, admittedly.
>>121721951extraordinarily foul>>121722032not sure what this has to do with /classical/, maybe try >>>/v/ instead?

How do I into atonal modern era shit? I tried listening to Schoenberg and it just sounded like a bunch of jumbled notes to me. And if I go even more modern, it just gets even worse with stuff like "new complexity". >Though often atonal, highly abstract, and dissonant in sound, New Complexity music is most readily characterized by the use of techniques which require complex musical notation. How is this anything more than experimental intellectual masturbation?
>>121726491

Man, are these threads always this slow if I'm not starting some discussion or asking a question to stir up debate and conversation?>>121728348Ah, well I suppose that's what their job is. I've always wondered about that though, since I never studied music so I can't check for myself, about how much liberty conductors and musicians take with a classical piece as well as just how much specific instructions or direction did the composer include, and how exactly all that works, because from my uninformed perspective, one would think 'oh there is an ideal, follow-the-instructions way of performing just about any piece' but, of course, listening experience tells us that is simply not the case. And I'm of the mind that following the composer's written intentions is the way music should be approached, so when there are so many different, varied interpretations, then something must be going on lol.
What is beautiful about Barenboim is how gracefully he conducts Wagner. If I was in his place, I would deliberately sabotage or refuse to conduct Wagnerian works. One of the most underrated conductors.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjEwJ4Z84YII'm just gonna say it. I envy the Jews. I envy them and their artistic mastery of music and grasp of beauty. I envy their intelligence which far exceeds mine. I envy their dedication towards the art. Their emphasis on notes, casting. All my insults were ignorant as they are created out of envy and jealousy. Jews are the chosen race. We should all plan our extinction and leave everything in their hands from here on out.

>>121730842Regardless of your opinion of Schönberg, are you aware that this quote is simply stupid and incoherent? If art comforts the disturbed and disturbs the comfortable, then in the end the disturbed are comfortable and the comfortable are disturbed, and the same art can no longer be profitable and enjoyable. If we follow the logical conclusions of this sentence, any work of art ends up being "bad art". You may say that this is true and normal, but you must be aware that the implications of your pretty pseudo-intelligent quote are the rejection of whole swathes of mankind's artistic production.

>>121733295One of the starkest differences is, opposite of the obvious contrast in the measure of the highest heights of Bach's cantatas, is also the disparity between the quality of the floor too -- as in, when I was going through Suzuki's collection of the cantatas, many were nice and great but there were definitely a lot that were unenjoyable and dull. With Richter, even the 'worse' cantatas still sound plenty entertaining. That divine, Godly, awe-inspiring sound appeals to something deep and fundamental in us and quenches our thirst from the well of infinite delight.

I'm going to see Mahler's 2nd live in Kansas City, MO mid-June. I've never been to a classical performance before aside from playing in my high school band. My question is where would be the best place to sit? Picrel is the layout of the place.
>>121756222And what I mean by "best place to sit" has to do with sound quality or better experience
now playing>>121756222Jealous! I should look into getting into and attending live performances where I live (Portland).
>>121756222Mahler? More like MEHler am I right?
>>121756391you already made that joke
>>121756222sitting on an upper level allows you to see the different instrument groups playing. sitting just in front of the orchestra is a bad idea, you will hear whatever instrument you have in front of you in that case.my own preference are the cheapest seats, I'm there to listen to music, not to watch the conductor moving his arms.

i dont consider myself a classical fanatic or anything but i think schoenberg's piano suite is neat. it strips away any sense of typical consonance, and yet you can still hear all the cool dynamics, tempo shifts, and phrasings. its only flaw to me is that its just one instrument, but schoenberg probably has other stuff similar to this that isnt for solo instruments, right?
>>121757460Yeah, the 5 Orchestral pieces and the concerti. He's an exceptional orchestrator. Another piece you should hear is his Ode to Napoleon.

Listening to Rubinstein's Chopin Waltzes while daydreaming about the pink-haired girl I've been seeing in the mornings. I WILL talk to her tomorrow.
Also just realized the main theme in the E-Flat Major is the same one in Schumann's first part of Carnaval, or at least very very similar. Which is great because I love it.
Is Moondog classical?

I only keep saying things like that because I don't like when threads on other boards derail into off-topic rubbish and silliness, generally with /r9k/ and /pol/ type stuff. A few posts are okay, of course, but not wanting it to spiral into something longer I say I'm done posting about it.
>>121773002Why do you say that
>>121772981O, twice, that's a good idea.
>>121772747Maaan, one of the aspects of Beethoven's genius in his symphonies, and other masterpieces, is that there is zero fluff, filler, waste, or sub-par segments. Every note and bar is pure pleasure, even in the transitions, setups, and progressions. You can't say that for many of the other great composers and their symphonies.
