Do you use reverb right? But what if you delay original signal, pass reverb wo delay. So in result reverb will be earlier and signal mixing be different?Im feel diference. What purpose of it? Music experts tell.

>>122469374nice work, imo the bass volume is sometimes too loud in the mix at least around the :40 mark. I can't really say that I feel like the song has a destination but I suppose if this was in the background of vidya it would be suited for that
>>122470246>I can't really say that I feel like the song has a destination but I suppose if this was in the background of vidya it would be suited for thatYeah, in the vidya it repeats ad infinitum after the intro. I figured a simple E Minor chord would be sufficient for an ending point.

i'm kinda surprised to feel interested in making music again. i feel like the core motivation for me is other people. although it's through internet ofc. i just want to publish things that are nice to listen to. just some instinctual drive to create and share. it doesn't even matter what genre. i just want to be able to create nice things and share them. somehow that type of motivation works for me. money is a motivation too.it seems like to be motivated you have to socialize, not even actually socializing with people, i just mean mentally socializing with society. not going hermit, not isolating yourself. you need this drive to connect to people with your work.there more i isolate myself the less motivated i am.
making music is so therapeutic which I'm not sure is a good or bad thing. when I'm working on arranging or maybe trying to nail a particular timbre or even writing unless I 100% focus my mind wanders off into my own issues and I get mad/sad/glad I start fantasizing or scheming about random stuff.

>>122491520Repetition is used for mechanical consistency. Why would you need to be a pro at drawing chords on the piano roll? Instead you should be good at coming up with chord progressions, which is something you do through experimentation, not repetition. Beatmakers that spam the sameish trash beat every day are only getting good at the mechanical part of it, and when working in a DAW it's just a nice to have thing instead of a requirement like if you are going to play an instrument

>>122513129If WD Elements is seeing the hard drive, are you sure it's seeing the drive itself, or just the controller board? Can you hear the drive spinning up? Clicking and/or trying to seek?If your OS isn't seeing or mounting the drive then it might not be spinning up, or its heads have crashed and it can't read the platters, you'll need to open the casing to listen for sounds that it might be making, indicating whether it's even trying to run or whether it has had some sort of failure, either electronic like failed power delivery to the drive, or mechanical, like a bearing or head failure.
>>122514181>you'll need to open the casingAnd by that I mean open the enclosure, don't open the hard drive casing itself

When I plug it into the Mac I can hear it working and spinning. It even feels kinda warm. The only time it'd make that sound on my PC is when I'm transferring to or from it.
>>122515533Have you used it with your mac before and it worked ok then? Able to read from it and write to it?This might be something as simple as an unreadable file system like NTFS that Windows uses but Macs don't support fully (older ones will mount the drive but it will be read-only, need a third party NTFS utility to write to them), but usually Mac OS disk utility would prompt you to initialize the disk if it noticed that the file system was not recognized, it wouldn't just hang.I think you're going to need to take the external enclosure out of the equation if it's not the file system issue described above, you'll need to remove the drive from its enclosure and attempt to connect it to your machine with an adaptor, either SATA to USB or SATA to Thunderbolt depending on your mac. That way, you can determine whether the drive has an issue, or it's the enclosure that is faulty.

>>122521727>If I fuck up with the enclosure would it ruin the hard drive? The enclosure is the box that holds the hard drive, not the hard drive itself, just so you're 100% on what I mean. And yeah you could ruin it if you attack it ham-fistedly, it might be glued shut and you'd need to force it open, that could physically crack the enclosure and it might not go back together properly. The hard drive inside will be attached either to a short cable or directly to a circuit board that gives the drive power and that is in turn attached to the interface (USB or Thunderbolt) on the outside of the enclosure, and this won't stand up to much violence at all.Preferably you can open the enclosure and withdraw the drive from it without any real forceful work, hopefully it's just held together with screws or clips, as you don't want to subject the drive inside to a lot of knocks, even when not powered up but especially when it is.And on that last part, are you sure the drive hasn't been dropped or had anything dropped on it while it was powered up, by you or by someone else who may not have told you?

>>122535891I really like the artwork and the sounds here, particularly the saxophone. It feels like an intro to something though, I kept waiting for more. Would be good soundtrack music as is though, or maybe add some low end and more movements to make it something I'd put on a playlist.
>>122538011hey, thanks for your commentim not sure if the track is fit for rapping since i dont see any room for vocals cuz i didnt intend it for that, but sure you can get someone to rap on it if you like, as long as the rap is not about drugs and smoking someone etcI think the first part is in A# major and the last part is in G minor, 138bpmAltough i have some other beats that really are fit for rapping over betteralso, i enjoyed your track, nice track

>>122537871>https://vocaroo.com/1eguRQFWwuBBpretty nice trap beat, reminds me of xxxtentacion. Again not my kinda music but it really has nice production behind it. >>122538224i was going for more of a whitearmor sound, i never listened to that guy, although i understand why u made the reference cause hes the most popular of soundcloud rappers or whatever
>>122538268i was actually thinking of getting a saxWhat worries me the most is how loud would it be, i live in a flat so im worried it would annoy my neighbours a lot. i understand sax is a loud instrument but could it be played quietly? How do you manage this issue?
>>122538224I hate for it to sound like a cop out, but genuinely does there always have to be loads of harmony and melody? it’s just bare bones stripped down lo fi synth pop. I could mix the vocals differently but i added the distortion just for the low quality sound but eh we all have different tastes. I like very polished stuff too sometimes and very melodic or harmonically rich stuff. But I also like low quality raw and stripped down as well
>>122538286you can play relatively quietly but unless you're quite experienced the sax won't sound its best. Good enough for practicing when starting out though, I'd say. I played quietly for a while but then got a new sax and got too excited playing loud and very often, neighbours complained, now I go to a practice space. It costs some money but well worth it to a. play loud if you want, b. play with better acoustics than my tiny storage room I was playing in, c. depending on the place you have drums, piano and mics to fuck around with.Sadly something like silentbrass isn't possible with sax.You could consider getting a bass or alto clarinet, they're much quieter, might be a bit niche though lol.
>>122538295hence me feeling old lol, music has changed and I would not seek this out or put it on, personally. but I'm sure other people would and like I said you have your own style. calling this synth pop seems wrong to me though, it doesn't have pop sensibilities.
>>122538368maybe synthpop isn’t the right word, what would you say it is?I do have to disagree with you about music changing, maybe you mean you just have always had a particular taste because we’ve seen barebones low quality grating vocals in music appeal to people since atleast like the 60s.like these two songs, one from the 60s and one from the 70s that fit the criteria of low quality, not much in the way of melody and more or less grating vocalshttps://youtu.be/63Agrr2qC78?si=AETYPA4igZV-uvsYhttps://youtu.be/q3Ofgdu4ZDs?si=g7f19hFwb1SwqyFMme personally my background in music started with punk so noise and unpolished has always been the center of my universe
>>122538286my neighbor (apartment building two doors over) plays and teaches saxophone. He doesn't teach at home, but I only ever hear him practice when I am outside (our building has the doors open to the outside kinda like a motel or motor lodge), never from inside my apartment. We actually recorded this track together in my apartment. He did the sax and I did the rest of the instruments and production. Never had any complaints but we live in the PNW. If you are in Britain then idk if people are as receptive to being "disturbed" lol. https://vocaroo.com/1mYhf8Yzjecv
>>122535891Also forgot to ask, how did u do those percussions? What are those instruments?

>>122538467lofi synth-punk? has a post-punk feel to it too; I got my start in punk bands as well. I guess what I meant was music like the stuff you shared was certainly not popular music when it came out. But now I could see gen-z kids or even someone my age throwing something like your track onto a playlist to listen to on the bus or in the car. Reminds me of cumgirl8 for example; fairly popular indie music, but it isn't something I personally would listen to. So maybe it isn't that music has changed so much as "mainstream" tastes have become more eclectic.

How do you guys balance making music you want to make and music for others to enjoy? I enjoy breakcore and making it, but, realize how "tasteless" it could be and focus my listening/enjoyment on more digestable stuff, when I'm not in an extreme mood.
>>122543882>I enjoy breakcore and making it, butthere's a huge audience for breakcore wtf?Unless you're setting out specifically to people please that should be a non-issue. (and if your goal is *only* to please you're just setting yourself up for misery already). My answer is finding the intersection of what I like and what I know other people like and combining it (this actually isn't an issue at all because my taste is impeccable and people who don't like what i like are stupid and wrong and idc about them anyway). It's somewhat of an arrogant thing to think *your taste* is so specific and special that other people out there like you are so rare to be negligible anyway- like come on, they're out there bro. There's one of those "round tables" on youtube where Trent Reznor and some other... smaller names.... discuss their approach to composition and iirc they talked at least briefly about that issue and said the same thing "oh this weird ass instrument or compositional technique has interested me lately... how can I use it to make music like xxx for this film?" and just see that as a challenge.I'm not one for youtuber celebrity bullshit but some of those were pretty good if you just want to get into the heads of actors and stuff... idr if they had many film composers/musicians or if it was just that one
>>122543962Yes, I know it's not about people pleasing or whatever or perceiving myself as special and super unique. What's in my mind is about catering to the rave itself and having people enjoy it how I want them to. I guess it's just not a complete synthesis yet, so thanks, Anon.
>>122544045yeah i'm not trying to be like, mean about it or anything, I just went through/am in the same thing and have seen more esoteric creators completely cut through that shit.-obviously if you want to play to a more general room you have to cast a wider net so to speak; it depends on your goals, of course
>>122544088I didn't take it that way. Yes, there are more 'esoteric' creators who will have reached more people than we will. It's an odd thing being able to create something so personal while also being digested by people.
I reworked the beat a decent bit, from changing the drum samples to make things a little less muddy. Fucking love the SP404 mk2. Shit's so fun. https://vocaroo.com/1llW8TaEkQN4
>>122529027since you're working with reference tracks already you could try to make it a bit more productive. Instead of vaguely trying to follow the vibe of the music, load a track up in you DAW and try to meticulously rebuild some elements. i cannot comprehend how a human being can come up with ideas like this, ofc the music theory behind it is quiet simple. but getting that idea in the first place. i just don't understand how you sit in your room or studio and suddenly get an idea like this. is it pure luck, listening to lots of music to get ideas, deal with the devil, doing 1 million experimental songs until one is good?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBBhiKzDFWY
>>122565799They probably jammed a bunch on it/took previous ideas from other songs that the whole wasn’t good but had one section that was. Or maybe they’re a genius that planned it all out.

>>122566122>but getting that idea out of nowhere is insane to me.You literally explained the key in your first post.>listening to lots of music to get ideasI don't hear anything unique in that track you posted. It's all basic-bitch shit that I feel like I've heard thousands of times before. In the same way that you're able to put together sentences by having read and listened to a lot of previously constructed sentences (taking pieces of what you've heard and stitching them together based on what you feel/think in a given moment) you can do the exact same with music. It seems to me like you just haven't listened to enough music -- or if you have listened to a lot, maybe you haven't been paying close enough attention.

>>122566481maybe last.fm or pandora (does that still exist?) has something like that
>>122573960Cool, thanks bro, I'll try those outThat hard synced idea sounds reasonable
>>122573863I'm not sure if this is the sound you were asking about, but the most prominent thing I'm hearing sounds like a 303~ish sound but with an added phaser for a sweeping motion. It appears to just be repeating the same sequence with a phaser (and possibly resonance control) giving it some motion.I cannot tell what's going on with the high pitch supporting synth, I'll get back to you if I grab my headphones later to figure it out.

>>122574058>Do you think it was an actual 303?depends, what's the source and when was it made?It doesn't sound exactly like a 303 was used to me, but hard to say.If you have serum, there's plenty of guides for 303-like sounds similar to this, the one in vid related sounds fairly close just would need to slap a phaser on it and dial it in until it sounds right.https://youtu.be/V7I6GLGU5sY?feature=shared&t=283Hope this helps you as I am not an expert on synthesis either.>>122574058>I'll try to rebuild it with the Arturia vstif you have Acid V, that should have some presets like this to get you most of the way there.
>>122574171>depends, what's the source and when was it made?BT, I think late 90s. >>122568499white boy got that shit on!
>>122574226>BT, I think late 90s.It very well could be a real 303 that he used then, the time would like up with when that growly/distorted/overdriven 303 sound was popular and he likely bought one a few years prior in some pawn shop somewhere when they would've been cheap.Yeah, I suggest messing around with Acid V and grab a phaser plugin, should be possible to get something similar.

Please god someone give me some arrangement advice/ideas for this. I like the main idea but I cannot figure out how to arrange it whatsoever. https://voca.ro/1erMsxTVPnFTAlso any Burial vibes?
>>122574763Not really a fan of that beat desu, I think I'd prefer just the part at 00:14 with a really strong snare on the after beat.Vocal is pretty nice and burialish though
poorfag from a band here, is two mics enough for a drumkit? is there any interface with like 5 inputs that could be gotten for cheap so we can record our band pretty much "live" and save time ?vid related, the drummer seems to use 2 mics here but the cymbals are almost unheardhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fW_Bz05kvXE
>>122574763I think this is actually really good, idk that there is anything wrong with the arrangement. you can add some filters for variation, some beat drops to change things up. once the drums come in they never stop; drop the drum track for a couple beats, and let either that vocal sample or synth arpeggio shine, then bring them back in. once I feel like I have a solid track these are the little things I do to add variation.
new thread when
i have an answer to the question "do you need music theory?"the answer is: yes if your music sucks, no if your music sounds goodtelling someone who's music sucks that he doesn't need music theory doesn't make any sense to me. like how the hell they gonna improve? there's no fun in making bad music.
I made this chill little beat today. this is my first time doing something like this. it's a bit awkward at times. what do you think?https://voca.ro/12M2ymndr684
>>122576493sounds like a 8 year old girl trying to make her first beat on dads pc
>>122576463>there's no fun in making bad music.that's where you're wrong, kiddo
somehow i find making music with real instruments, or at least some rompler tier or soundfont tier instruments, way more interesting than work with synths.to me most synth presets, no matter which synth, sound the same. just wavetables with more or less distortion.just a cheap trumpet soundfont has way more voice color than synth sounds.well, ofc i'm a bit shitposting just to make my point.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6YDKF0LVWwwhich drum kit, vsts etc. to use to get this sound?
https://voca.ro/17zTyrOheiEhFirst thing I’ve made in a while. I tried with no quantization. It’s the very first draft so I’m going to re-record the bass part
>>122576782True, nobukazu takemura has made some really nice stuff with those kjnds kf midi trumpets, guitars, clarinets etc.. (check out his Milano e.g.)
>>122576493trying to keep the thread positive but it doesn't sound good. the drums sound like a dad rock drum set, and the rhythm is bad in a bad way, not in the good lofi unquantized way that you probably were going for. the instrumental is just a couple synth chords, there's no bassline?
>>122576493Needs more variation but decent start
