I'm joining your guys' general. It's the least autistically ragey one, but still autistic in just the good way.Which gentle giant album should I start with

Hello
Bump for the greatest guitarist of all time and /prog/ connoisseur
>>122519374
John Frusciante can easily learn /prog/ songs in less than 24 hours. One of the many reasons he is the greatest guitarist of all time, objectively.>Could you tell us a random good memory you have working with John? >Dave Lee: "I'm glad you asked, Ivan. There's a story I remembered the other day. I've told Pedro I was going send it to him, so here it is. I grew up in the late 70's and was a huge fan of the band "Yes". At some point I came to know John was a fan as well. We discussed Yes occasionally, and while on a trip to Japan, John and I had discussed their album "Close to the Edge" and I had said how that album really meant a lot to me growing up. Particularly the song "Siberian Khatru". >Upon arrival in Tokyo, we had a day off to recover from jet lag. The next day at the venue, when the band showed up, I was notified that John was looking for me. My first thought was "Uh-oh. What did I do this time?" Well, he found me, and said he wanted me to follow him to the dressing room because he wanted to show me something. >He sits me down next to the little CD player in the dressing room and plugs his red Jaguar into the practice amp. He then takes out Yes' "Close to the Edge" CD and puts it in. Next he cue's up Siberian Khatru, and proceeds to play along note for note EXACTLY to the song. I mean exactly. Every single part of the 9 minute long epic. And if there was a part with no guitar, he'd play the keyboard parts on his guitar. He just sat there on the floor ripping perfectly through this very intricate song with a huge smile on his face. He even played the guitar fade out solo ending, all the way till it fades completely out. >And then I realized he wasn't smiling because he was "proud" or "showing off". He was smiling because he knew how much it meant to me. It was like a personal little gift, that he'd spent his whole day off preparing. And it did mean alot to me. ...still does." >Question by: - Ivan Roccon - Glasgow - Scotland

>>122528824ok mr smarty pants what's the most overrated king crimson album then
>>122528865In the court of the crimson king
>>122528865Unironically ITCOTCK, it is a very important album for the band and there's still a lot to like about it, but it is also disproportionately more famous than anything else in their discography and that's a shame considering it is King Crimson at their earliest and most primitive stage. ITCOTCK being the only well-known KC album is a crime, I cannot imagine Piper at the Gates of Dawn or From Genesis to Revelation or the Yes debut being the only famous albums of their respective bands but King Crimson has to carry that burden forever partly because of Kanye West and a shitty anime I guess.
>>122528951>King Crimson at their earliest and most primitive stageit gets earlier and more primitive than that, check picrel>comparing court of the crimson king to piper, yes, fg2ryou're literally nuts, you're a schizo if you think any of those are fair comparisons. ITCOTCK is like if genesis released Lamb in 1969, or if Yes released Ctte in 1969. No shit people talk about it
>>122528865>>122527177
>>122528998>ITCOTCK is like if genesis released Lamb in 1969, or if Yes released Ctte in 1969Fair point, I can't deny there was nothing like it at the time. But at the same time though, appreciating music as a listener isn't museology, being the pioneer of a genre might be a cool historical trivia but it doesn't actually mean your very first effort deserves to be disproportionately more recognizable than everything else you did, hence the comparisons with the other bands: it still sucks that this is the one KC album everyone knows rather than something like Larks, Red, or Discipline.
>>122528951ITCOTCK is their most "composed" album and feels more like a cohesive/conceptual song cycle of any of the others which were usually more loose and exploratory. It's easy to see it as a monolith when they designed it that way.
>>122529118>ITCOTCK is their most "composed" album and feels more like a cohesive/conceptual song cycle of any of the others which were usually more loose and exploratoryI'd say Lizard and Islands also feel very conceptually tight at the very least.
do any of you think that you like prog but only listen to 5 bands within the genre?
>>122529153That was me before getting into prog metal, now I listen to 7 or 8 bands in the genre instead
>>122529142Islands maybe, but Lizard? It's the classic "sidelong epic vs. a few random shorts" formula. It's fine but definitely feels scattered. Fripp and Sinfield just wanted to rush an album out because they didn't have a stable lineup to play shows.
>>122529167I think that's just true of every genre. You can cast a wide net but at the end of the day there are only ever going to be a handful of bands that you really connect with.
>>122523570Yes, really yes>>122524036You are ignorant to Frusciante's greatness.
Fine, I'll bite: where should I start with Frusciante? Please convince me Frusciantefag
>>122528951>because of Kanye West and a shitty anime I guessthats fucking bullshit and I'm a JoJofag that came to know prog rock from the le wacky chinese comic with faggy poses - In The Court is their most famous album because it already was back then, these guys almost mogged the Rolling Stones in that free park concert where they "debuted". There was nothing else like that (and imho, there still isn't) and that lineup was nothing short of perfect (technicality wise, after watching the KC documentary and reading some interviews I'm starting to think that half of them were somewhat mentally ill, specially Fripp) and the closest thing to even match ITCOTCK energy was Red, but unfortunately Red didn't do that well until way much later.
>>122529468Red might be their most energetic album since ITCOTCK, but I don't think that makes it the best. Again, I'm not disputing that ITCOTCK is a massive landmark milestone in prog, but after so many decades, it feels like it should no longer just be the one King Crimson album that everyone recognizes.
>>122529463The Empyrean

>>122542790beat doesn't have a bunch of failed experiments littered throughout
>>122539812>SABB is the most overrated by farlmao, just because you are getting filtered doesnt mean the others are exagerating Just think about this, if they recorded Dr. Diamond and put it in the album instead of "The Mincer" they would've had the best album of the 70's and arguably of all time.So even when they sadly didnt do that, SABB still contends with the best KC albums and that alone says a lot
SABB's biggest achievement is bringing their live energy into the studio tracks (The Great Deceiver, Lament, The Night Watch). It just feels redundant in a time when you can listen to as much live Larkscrim as you want.
>>122504694I know, I know>health food faggotBut The Great Deceiver is one of my absolute favorite King Crimson songs. It's such an excellent proof-of-concept of what the band is capable of in their prime without listening to something that's overly longhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-O5Yvvz8XY0

>>122543387The vocal tracks on SABB are probably Larkscrim's most social gathering-friendly songs because they're short and straightforward.

Is this going to become a trend of Frippy blessing the plebs with more live goodness?
>>122553226does this have the Eddie over dubs or David Cross original violin parts?
>>122553480I think it's the one that is more faithful to the unedited live recording I hope Fripp lets his people add some of the collectors club releases but that might be too much to ask
>>122553480>2005 mix of original multi-track tapes by Ronan Chris Murphy at DGM. Released as download from dgmlive.com in 2005 and on CD as disc two of The Collectable King Crimson Vol. 1 in 2006. This edition is now the full Asbury Park concert, without overdubs, and in the proper running order. Includes all tracks, with the uncut versions of "Asbury Park" and "Easy Money"; "21st Century Schizoid Man" is moved to be the last track and is now the version from Asbury Park rather than Providence, Rhode Island. Does not include Eddie Jobson's overdubs.>2013 mix by original multi-track tapes by Robert Fripp, Tony Arnold and David Singleton at the Courthouse, Cranborne, Dorset. Same track order and versions as release #3. Splits improv at end of track 6 into its own track. This mix is available on The Road to Red and the 40th Anniversary edition of USA.
today I shall play flight sims and listen to power to believe
Honest thoughts?
Have you shocked the monkey today /prog/?
>>122557005It's okay. There are a lot of good songs on it but the production doesn't suit it at all, nor are the strengths of the band emphasized at all. Not the worst debut album by a prog band though

When did you realize pic related was the best prog album since Red?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GT0nSp8lUws
>>122559995it is good but the production on the studio album sucks. Live at KEXP on youtube is much better. comparing it to Red is cope though
>>122551574It's an amazing live album. Dance on a Volcano goes hard.
Adulthood is realizing Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford were more responsible for the change of Genesis' sound in 80s than Phil Collins was.At least that's what I think mostly because at that time Collins preferred to write songs more for his solo albums, leaving most of the 80s Genesis songs written by the rest of the band but due to solidarity, Collins still got the songwriting credit.
>>122551574https://youtu.be/YsV-1FDLTW0?si=sSgMZHvlWWlpD0GDthis song is also included in the international edition so I want to chirp in a bit.Love this song so much, the first time I knew about this song, it was included in the cassette version of their 1983 self-titled album I found in my country. And then I found the track doesn't belong in that album, and so are Me and Virgil and Who Dunnit (which was also erroneously written as Lurker(?)). Then I also found out the reason why my cassette had this weird ass tracklisting because back in 80s, there was no official distributor in my country and I don't think there was a music copyright law as well, so people could just pirate stuff from abroad and repackage it here by adding some random tracks like my example above.
>>122559995>the best prog album since RedHuh, but you didn't post picrel?
>>122559995While I will admit black midi has some good songs. This whole liberal arts students trying to be quirky stuff gets on my nerves.
>>122560290>In the Cage/Afterglow medley
>>122553226It's been a long time since all that stuff came to Spotify, so I doubt we're getting more. However I recommend the two Great Deceiver albums on Spotify if you want to listen to Wetton-Era live Krim. Also, any King Crimson live recording that exists is already available for download on the DGM site. Some cost money but if you make a new account you get a free download. Lots of cool stuff on there.

>>122565854* Starlite, just Googled and found out, fuck
>>122559995Black Midi haven't been good since Matt left.>inb4 "but he did some writing on Cavalcade"Not enough unfortunately. They needed the post-punk/no-wave influence to balance out Geordie's sporkcore wankery.
>>122559995>Best prog album since Redactually laughable takealso the best prog album since Red was Exposure
>>122562202>This whole liberal arts students trying to be quirky stuff gets on my nervesIf the band members were 10-20 years older than they are but their sound and visuals were otherwise identical then I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be bitching about it, this is just your old man syndrome anon
>>122565956>also the best prog album since Red was ExposureNow *that* is an actually laughable take
>>122557005Imagine a timeline where they chose school over music and never kept the band going after recording this album. I could see it becoming a minor "rediscovered cult classic" from the era.
Holy FUCK, this album sounds so GOOD, it might not be the peak of Pink Floyd music-wise but the production is just phenomenal. What are some other prog albums that just sound absolutely immaculate to you, anons?
>>122560123>>122565956Cavalcade is nowhere near Red but comparing BM to KC isn't that unreasonable. Reportedly the founder of Rough Trade told the band that they reminded him of the experience of seeing the original King Crimson lineup in 1969.

>>122572907Pink Floyd are the best Prog band.
>>122540845Yes. The End is Begun is fantastic.
>>122574554I fully unironically agree, they might not have the chops of most other bands that fall into the prog umbrella but their creativity was astonishing and I think they ended up with a phenomenal discography full of sonic variety. There's a reason why almost everything post-prog and third wave is influenced by Pink Floyd in some way, they're just really good.
>>122572907Days of Future Passed is decent at best but has a ton of cheesy/cringey moments, terrible transitions/arrangement, and sounds like a very, very sad excuse for orchestral/classical music.

>>122578491Fucking Banderas man>Due to Townsend's constant dispute with the studio owner, who kept kicking him out of the studio every afternoon to party with his friends, one of them being then rising movie star Antonio Banderas, Townsend then refused to pay the studio bill, which resulted in him being denied access to the master tape by the studio owner. Frustrated by that, Townsend eventually decided to sneak in the studio with Bergstrand at 3 A.M. to make a copy of the master tape, accidentally leaving out the song Ocean Machines there, thus the song exists only in demo quality.
