Clever and thoughtfully written orchestration contrasted by chaotic solos > random noodling
I mean, yeah. Who the hell disagrees with that?
any good modern big band stuff? i like hank levy's compositions from what i heard. the albums he did with his college were pretty good. but i found him through pleb tier means which i will not disclose because people here will make fun of me :(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGLdSo1o8xIbut do you guys know any more like this? kinda fusion-ish funky stuff?
>randomkeep honking, bitch
>>122589223None of this is a show of genius, just a show of skill, a gimmick.
>>122588828So classical for plebs?
Where are my Count Basie fags at?!
>>122589411There is a significant difference between the styles of harmony in Big Band music and Classical. You'd be hard pressed to find a Classical composer that sounds like Duke Ellington. Calling it classical for plebs is just retarded

>>122588828>big band solos>chaoticlisten to more music, white boy
>mogs your big band faggotry
>>122589662>its not random if im meaninglessly playing gimmicksIt's still random, your thought of playing a mixolydian scale is still random of a thought. There is no creative musical idea behind it beyond playing something that sounds cool without any expression.
>>122589747>>122589761Both shit compared to a Duke Ellington record
>>122589809>mogs your favorite Duke Ellington Orchestra record
>>122589869He needed the Duke to make it good, otherwise it'd be total shit. Duke makes everything better.
>>122589894>Duke makes everything better.I think you're retarded, but I agree with this statement.
>>122589949Nah, I'm higher taste than you. I only appreciate grand works of Orchestral beauty composed by a genius. No piano smashing for me, no.
>>122589747i cant stand flute in jazz unless its roland kirk playing with his nose or some shit, not even eric dolphy makes it sound good
>>122589796>always starts on an off-beat>always down inserts chromatic passing notes>always uses swung eighth notes>always uses walking basslines>always uses ride cymbal on beat>always finishes phrases using guide tones>randomYou will never be smart and you will never win arguments on the internet. Go back.
>>122588828All languages, musical or verbal, have a structural grammar to them, including the "random noodling" of bebop and its descendants. Anything will sound like random noodling to anyone, be it Arabic words or Arabic scales and tonality, if you don't have enough exposure to them.I wish I could find it but there's a cool interview Frank Zappa did where he discussed how he stopped getting filtered by jazz noodling and started hearing the feel and logic behind it. I think he mentioned guys like Eric Dolphy and Stan Getz being the ones who helped him reach this epiphany. I have seen tons of poptimists and rockists listen to the big band work of Frankie Trumbauer, Stan Kenton and others and dismiss it as random nonsense too. It's all relative.
>>122590043I'm already where I should be, kek. >But muh rulesThe point of rules in art is to be broken, anything that uses these rules is automatically shit. You sound like a psuedointellectual
>>122590001>roland kirk playing with his nose or some shitkekyusef lateef is probably a better example though, he doesn't play loudly so the flute doesn't produce that high-pitched shrill. i still prefer clarinet and even bass clarinet for that kind of register and timbre anyway
>>122589442Right here
>>122590104>it's all random>but it's also all muh rules!!!kwab
>>122590122The point of those rules is to break them, not to add consistency you retard kek. That is what makes it random. People like you are why there needs to be a iq test before browsing
>>122589411Some Big Band is really special and superb but yeah, a lot of it is really watered-down Stravinsky worship.>>122589761Amazing album.>>122589869Great album but by no means not my favorite by either one of them.>>122590001I don't mind flute but I understand where the complaint is coming from, people back in the day had no fucking idea how to mix flute properly alongside tenors.>>122590104>anything that uses these rules is automatically shit.I'm pretty sure that list of criteria comes from bebop and hard-bop specifically, but big band constantly uses a lot of them as well, so you kinda sound like a retard tourist when saying this.
