>>122601034One, The Top is barely "happy silly new wave", half of that album is as dreary as Pornography is. Two, Pornography marked the end of a protracted, self-destructive path. There was nothing fake about it, Pornography damn near destroyed The Cure and The Top was in essence a Robert Smith solo album. They got their shit together in the end and moved in a poppier, mentally healthier direction on Head on the Door, but the band was spiraling and almost didn't make it past Pornography.

Of course you can still notice Robert's personality in those post-gothic albums but damn that was some change. I'm intrigued about it.
