It really isn't Mascis' best work, but it is the one that he had the most control over if I recall correctly. I'm pretty sure he managed to piss off the rest of the band so bad they quit like midway through the album being finished and Mascis had to play all the instruments himself, but I don't think that explains the tone shift adequately. I don't know what explains that tone shift, desu. I guess an attempt to court the mainstream grunge market at the time and move away from the dying hardcore scene?
Still, I like this album quite a bit if only for Thumb, Water, I Live For That Look and the title track, plus the live versions with Murph on the drums are goated.
