And that sound doesn't necessarily have to do with complexity either, since most people would agree Tool (a band with alot of complex compositions) is butt rock.

Easily digested rock music that were made for early 00s rock radio, lyrics focusing on relationships, but not in a hair metal way but more angsty but not grunge angsty and a sound that was almost entirely influenced by grunge and 90s alternative rock. Where grunge bands and alternative rock bands meshed their influences to a certain sound, buttrock don't do that. It's ''watered downed'' grunge/alternative rock.

Lyrics were often focused on close relationships like most music but it's certainly not all as Get Down With the Sickness by Disturbed or My Own Prison by Creed notably aren't. Butt rock also often has external stylistic elements. Skillet for example, regularly uses orchestral, industrial, edm, and other electronic styles. Evanescence and Red both use Orchestral and Gothic elements. And don't even get me started on Avenged 7X. I mean come on man, Paralyzed by Finger 11 is disco butt rock. Think before you type next time
