That's pretty foul. You could have gotten a strong with a bad wrap/core, or other manufacturing defect that may not be visible. I buy strings in bulk, and I once got an entire package of bad A strings. I restrung three guitars at once, and none of them would intonate properly anywhere on the A string. I had some spares left over from previously used sets of strings, so I swapped them out, and everything was fine.Try another D string, see if the problem goes away. Sometimes you just get a bad one.
