Nothing too complex, but the bass really makes the band's sound.
>>
>>122913806
Yep, never understood the hype. Bass lines are shit, whole band sounds like shit, must be the fake-edgy style that worked.

Here's a radical idea: picking an album made by a bassist

Fun fact: the idea to make the bass that overpowered in the mix was actually lead guitarist Mick Ronson's idea.

This Gov't Mule album is killer. it has a bunch of different bassists in honor of Alan Woody the orginal Mule bassist who passed.
Here is Bootsy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1eJVo4eq4M

Bassists:
Allen Woody ("Sin's a Good Man's Brother")
Jack Bruce ("Fool's Moon")
Oteil Burbridge ("Worried Down With the Blues")
Bootsy Collins ("Tear Me Down")
John Entwistle ("Same Price")
Flea ("Down and Out in New York City")
Roger Glover ("Maybe I'm a Leo")
Mike Gordon ("Banks of the Deep End", "Jesus Just Left Chicago")
Larry Graham ("Life on the Outside")
Stefan Lessard ("Beautifully Broken")
Dave Schools ("Blind Man in the Dark", "Fallen Down")
Mike Watt ("Effigy")
Willie Weeks ("Soulshine")

Any Yes album, really. Time And A Word especially - the story goes that the producer was wearing crappy headphones and couldn't hear the bass, so he kept turning it up and up. Chris Squire plays a lot of awesome bass lines anyways, and dominates since they were in the process of sacking their guitar player.

>>122915543
every member of primus is a god tier musician and they fit together very tastefully, the guitarist has this psychedelic textural sound that is rare in the 90s
>>
To the bassists in the thread, how long did it take you from picking up the bass to becoming an ok player? I've been thinking of trading my saxophone for a bass guitar, i don't like playing it anymore.

it helps if you have longer fingers or a good sense of rhythm and always use your pink, personally i use a pick cause im a good guitarist which basically makes me persona non grata among the bass clan, if you wanna get into slap bass thatll take longer but personally I got just good enough to make good bass to my own songs
>>
>>122920621
>it helps if you have longer fingers
I do.

>if you wanna get into slap bass thatll take longer
No interest in this.

>I got just good enough to make good bass to my own songs
That's what i want to/will be doing, recording music alone in my room.

pic related fink blackout, joe the lion, secrey life arabia actually have some excellent melodic bass that really sit in this perfect phase transition between the kind of funky, bouncy motown soul bass and oblique spastic post-punk / prog shit. like you hear both vibes very strongly simultanoeusly. maybe less so on secret life but still think the bass is good and melodic in that song. joe the lion and blackout however really are pinnacles of turning soul-based music into avante garde rock, the journey beginning for bowie on station to station

>>122910378
excellent melodic bass

>>122912562
excellent album for the postpunk style it innovated albeit it repeats itself a bit too much

>>122917225
this actually does have some very good heavy metal bass segments

especially love the bit where guitar and bass bpth go mental in a cream-style jam in she shook me cold
>>
>>122911592
it's metal
nobody can hear the bass anyway
