Australia is a lost cause. It needs to be nuked and never spoken of again.

Broadly speaking Australian music is gatekept by the big three record labels corporate, american interests through Triple J. Even though triple J isn't commercial radio, a career started at JJJ seldom ends at JJJ, and thus any presenter or curator has to bend the knee to their corporate overlords to ensure they can spin their career off somewhere commercial.

There are extremely obvious - corporate americanised - ideological issues at JJJ misread as 'woke'. Most people can recall Kerser. Early on, JJJ and its enlightened enthusiasts looked down their nose at him as he didn't fit their 'image'. They mocked him to the tune of 2012 stomp clap hey indie music and did not give him any more interest than the gum under their timbs/docs (note: not RM's fuck any unironic support for Australiana, ewwww) picked up on the way down to ultimo. Ten years and ten albums or so later and he is still selling out shows. JJJ however now plays the latest epic gang/drill rap from Onefour, who are openly a street gang in Sydney. Onefour now work with Sony Music. JJJ would disagree until their death, however they now become the platform for the corporate establishment record labels, as being non commercial radio it can play music with offensive language all day every day. Similarly they partnered with all the largest festivals bringing out the flavour of the week establishment artists paraded as 'alt' to university educated free thinkers who consoooom it without a degree of thought - 'pffft, I don't listen to commercial radio, I listen to Triple J!'.

Remember when they nuked Sticky Fingers based upon allegations of racism? In any case, JJJ's influence is dying. Zoomers aren't listening, and the cohort that still do were cool and hip 10 years ago, and now listen to the J's on the way to their wage cage cubical.

nice post.

agreed, the infrastructure is such that good acts from here only really leave the country, or are locally anonymous but have recognition online (i call this "work from home" indie)

our labels only invest in known commodities and given that their only good ROI option is in live/festival tickets, they can only really invest in the absolute shittest bands because the spending class in this country are smelly permastuck 80s hicks -- compound that with the fact that american indies distribute through australian majors (for which there is no australian indie label equivalent), our biggest indie radio station is government-owned and clowned on constantly, and that all our major cities are spread so far apart, and there's just no reason for indie's best and brightest to want to stay here

>>122922626
anyways here's my music. we're on the ups but it's mostly due to algorithmic excitement in midwest and PNW usa. i really wish i was there so that i could do somethign about it, but all we can really do from where we are is continue climbing algorithm. overall i'm optimistic about reaching the audience for my work but i've given up hope on australia ever being anywhere where anything happens

We need to wait for The Vines to come back and save rock and roll once again. And it’s happening too. Their long time drummer said recently that he linked up with Craig again and they have been working on new material that’s gonna be released soon.

I’ll take the opportunity to leave this here

https://www.godtapes.com/post/the-problem-with-ausrap-schr%C3%B6dingers-rappers

a seppo friend described it as “self-indulgent” and in retrospect I agree, but there might be a thing or two that could be of value to your question.

PS, I know the web design is shit. I’m working on it.

I fucking hate that song

>>122926399
who would you say are top three? i wouldn't really know since i'm mostly into prog death metal which has a lot of overlap with melodeath anyway.

i do love In Mourning, pretty sure they're highly regarded in melodeath.

i love the Oils' music and don't care one bit about their politics.
