Do people actually feel nostalgia for some mid 2000s generic melodeath band's like Insomnium? Some of that stuff has aged really bad vs. 90s melodeath when it was still kinda new and experimental genre
>>
Varg Vikernes about the Early Norwegian Scene gathering in Helvete(direct quotation):

It's gonna be really mid like almost everything they made in last 15 years, isn't it
>>
>>123172225
They changed the lineup, last few albums were written mostly by their now former drummer and their keyboard player. The guitar player actually had a lot of input now so it will be different but yeah probably quite mid.

Fiction remains their last truly great record.

>>
>>123172199
How are they generic? No one has done atmospheric and sombre style of melodeath better
>>
>>123172241
There were dozen bands that sounded like that during that same era
>>
>>123172248
You must have given it a very passing listen with little attention. Later on, sure, they got too watered down and generic sounding. But this particular album's melodies sound like how Opeth and Katatonia always wanted to sound but failed.
>>
>>123172277
I still have no problem calling 'generic'. I remember when Kalmah came around back in 2000s when people were listening Children of Bodom, Norther and I thought, when listening Kalmah, that "wow, this sounds kinda generic" even though I actually prefer Kalmah music over something like Bodom, Norther

It still was literal cookie cutter generic formula in terms of melody, songwriting, melodeath, whatever
>>
>>123172248
Can you name some
Opeth and Katatonia are barely similar
>>
>>123172234
>The guitar player
You mean Johan Reinholdz from Andromeda

Also funny how keyboard player is their longest active player besides Stanne now
>>
>>123172298
Metal was already in decline during 2000s. You shouldn't listen metal from that time period. Listen 80s metal. Maybe 90s metal
>>
>>123172291
Well yeah, those 3 bands all do sound fairly similar. It's hard to play power metal with growling and keyboards and to stand out from other bands who play power metal with growls and keyboards.
>>
>>123172225
I'm more interested in new albums from Cemetery Skyline and Halo Effect
>>
2000s melomeal, Scar Symmetry and Mors Principium Est were the two bands that stood out the most in Scandi scene.

Scar Symmetry due to glam metal riffs and growls/cleans.
MPE for utilizing blastbeat tempos with industrial sounding drums and super technical guitar solos.

As for finnish bands, Diablo were enormous potential who just never gave enough of a fuck to tour abroad. And probably the only melodeath band that went to release stellar material into 2010s, Silver Horizon was utterly fantastic.

Mors Principium Est are probably my favorite current melodeath band, they sound quite generic but had a great guitar player who left now so I'm not sure about their new album, the re-recordings of their old stuff weren't impressive

Also MPE are Finnish
>>
>>123172343
>Scar Symmetry
It took them almost 10 years to release a sequel to their last album, what happened?
Their new albums are decent but I prefer the early ones with Christian
Speaking of him Solution 45 have recently disbanded, did you listen to them?
>>
>>123172343
>Diablo

Did they release any solid stuff besides Eternium? I mean most of the stuff after and before that seemed kinda hit or miss. It's not my favorite genre of music, but Eternium was/is one of those albums that seemed to have no weak parts, it was really solid offering in terms of production, songwriting and seems like "odd ball" in terms of Diablo that it sounded like some sort of "big" sound production with a huge budget or something
>>
>>123172362
Recent MPE were pretty consistent but as you said, generic. First couple of albums had unique melodies, and those guitar players are now (supposedly) back in the band.
I would recommend you to check out Hateform's Dominance album, same dudes played there too. And while its a bit more thrashy than MPE, signature melodies (and solos) are still there.

I always had a soft spot for Soilwork, it's dumb pop metal but fun, even their late 00s metalcore stuff was not that bad, especially compared to sellout albums by In Flames

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LR2C2kEONIU
>>
>>123172375
I rate Mimic 47 and Silver Horizon (proggy arrangements, sci-fi concept record)as highly as Eternium. Icaros was so-so.
I only really dislike their latest album from a year or two ago. They changed their sound a bit too much for my liking.

>sellout album by In Flames

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iIQoPWm8ho

And I never listened/bothered to listen In Flames ever again (or well the older albums I did buy).
>>
>>123172449
I recently listened to their early albums again, they mostly hold up but Whoracle is not that great aside from Jotun and Episode 666, it also has too much filler like the instrumentals and that Everything Counts cover
>>
>>123172471
I had some metal collection CD in the late 90s/early 2000s and it had the instrumental "Dialogue with the Stars" from Whoracle. That originally got me interested in In Flames, I think that's a great one

>>123172504
Is it some "back to original roots" cash grab filler type of material? Many such cases and for most bands: not genuine
>>
>>123172484
It seems that some 90s bands just did not even want to play metal. It seems like they just hated metal from the very beginning and were riding the trends until it become commercially viable to play some techno pop djent rock chug radio edits in the 2000s or something so they could show their true colors

After that fad died out they tried to introduce more traditional "metal" elements to their albums, but not that they actually would want to do that. I think most of those musicians just fucking hate metal and it was just some cringe phase during their pre-teen and young adult life, but as they are musicians they are just milking the cow

Heartwork
Melodeath literally started and ended here

Ok I am exaggerating but this genre has barely progressed in terms of merging heaviness and melodicism. Most 'melodeath' is literally downtuned power metal with unfitting death metal vocals. Even the supposed 'actually good' melodeath I've been recommended like Vehemence, Intestine Baalism and Cenotaph sounds too saccharine to be particularly heavy, while also failing to create any particualrly memorable melodies/hooks. I guess ATG had some interesting albums in their early days (before their only talented member left)

Can anyone give me good recs or is melodeath really just unimpressionable creatively bankrupt subgenre

>Vile Luxury is when the band truly starts
Opposite. Jazz is merely a low class failed version of classical and their "jazz" amounts to doing the same copy paste bass scale in nearly every song and chugshit/breakdowns over top of it, their latest album being basically nothing else except that. Before that degradation they were heavily influenced by DsO and took more classical influence in their sound, now they are a rotten corpse left to slowly devolve into sax solos and post-African repititions.

"Better than most metal bands" is no high standard; there are no great metal bands to have ever existed, and Imperial Triumphant certainly haven't hit the highest of what currently stands, they had more potential before they decided chugs and jazz scale playing was the best they could ever offer.

>>123170392
III is more cohesive than CD or PD. There is a fantastic hypnotic and meditative feeling that Ad Nauseam presented which is provided not only by the subdued or sonorist sections, but also by the metal itself. Besides the inherent repetitive nature of riffs, III has no real flaw to it. It executes its musical goal to perfection, Gorgut's ambient and classical sections are simply not as well aligned with the metal being played in comparison. Ad Nauseam has the most potential for greatness in metal.

>>123170196
Too bad the goal was wasted on overglorified ASMR whispering, Kayo Dot - regardless of if you believe them to even be metal in the first place, were certainly not metal in goal or spirit. Ehnahre is metal in essence, they forget not the original violence of metal.
