Where do I go from here?
>>123633240Yanni
the words are coming out all weird where are you nowww when i need youu
>>123633240tweez if you haven't already. try stratosphere by duster or public strain by women, tnt by tortoise, the squirrel bait ep
>>123633240Squirrel Bait. The band before Slint, more straightforward post-hardcore. After that check each member side projects
>>123633240Mid 70s Neil Young
>>123633240June of 44, Polvo, Drive Like Jehu
>>123633240you might like unwound. all of their albums are good but the future of what, repetition and new plastic ideas might be a good place to start. shellac is good too, 1000 hurts has a song (shoe song) that sounds like a homage to both slint and unwound https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrN9PwjGSHI
do people actually love this album? all honesty i tried listening to it and just got so bored
>>123633240Alot of different ways, alot of different genres. Some suggestions:Bitch Magnet, Unwound, Shellac, Rodan, Don Caballero, Tortoise, A Minor Forest, Lowercase
>>123633620listen to it again in the dark
Rodan
>>123633240That's the end of the road Anon. Rock ends there
>>123633240by the time the album is over you will be sound asleep, where you choose to venture in the morning is entirely up to you. I prescribe slint - spiderland for all my patients with sleeping trouble
>>123633240You start listening to good music instead of this garbage.
>>123636042there's always the petty one
>>123633447>tweezit doesn't remind me of Spiderland, it was the right call to get rid of Albini
>>123633240>Where do I go from here?Backwards thru the Touch & Go catalogue until you hit the ACTUAL best album they put out…
>>123636822It does at times you just have to suffer through some grating circusy parts. Off the top of my head: Nan Ding, the middle quiet part of Kent, and the time signature change part of Carol
Ethan Buckler is releasing a new mix of Tweez in Octoberhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VG3H8FF5Yv4>About the tweethan mix: Per Ethan Buckler (Slint bassist on tweez), “Finally - after thirty-five long years - the other guys in Slint decided to be nice to me and let me have my Tweez remix. I complained incessantly back in the day about how the Albini production style ruined our first recording.” In 2023, Ethan took the original multi-track recordings to a local studio in Louisville. Upon handing the engineer a copy of a pre-tweez Slint practice tape, he said “Make it sound like this.” This tweethan mix album is the result. Mastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service.
>>123633240You read the 33⅓ book on the album and watch the documentary Breadcrumb Trail https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsRpS6XGiOs

>>123639748Stay mad, it's one of the greatest rock albums ever made
>>123633240There's always a chorus singing how you can find better post-rock or better math rock or better slowcore than Spiderland, but I think Slint does a really good job with atmosphere on that album. I dropped a bunch of names and links here a few weeks ago that got called slintcore, so I'll mostly be copying those; the OP then wanted "heroin-slow tempos and sultry noir chords" and "jazzy slowcore" akin to some tracks from Codeine and the Dismemberment Plan (>>123383773). (Nothing I posted really did it for him, so hopefully this is a better match.)Enablers: very atmospheric, spoken word over post-rock.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvTJQNjpmyAhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPEpXzzHOeEEnd Note and Output Negative Space have been big favourites of mine for a while, and everything else I've listened to from them has been similarly good; seriously impressive discography. They're quintessential lonesome dark night music. There's also the defunct Montreal band Sofa which plays something a bit similar, though their discography isn't nearly as large or as consistent.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rL2ukntJ1Ehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3s6LNhw2nrIThey got a compilation release titled Source Crossfire from Constellation Records recently, which is mostly their album Grey plus a mix of about half their other two full-lengths. Town Unsafe and Record are their two earlier full-lengths, though there's another with a red cover (I think it's on YouTube) that I didn't like very much.If you're willing to tolerate more jank and even less consistency than Sofa, then check out Smallmouth. Another Lower Canada band from Sofa's era, but playing something more like math rock and more often instrumental.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrZAyx3HXeghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dTUyPH3ruYhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTj5qhThEPkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkCm2XnIrfAAnd Eva Luna by Moonshake.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4cHyysL5dE
>>123643850(copy-pasting)More:Grenadilla Splinters by Exhaust. Haven't given a good listen to the rest of their discography, but this album is sinister and slow.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uoSNaAX00MA sinister and bitter slowcore band (one of the few, I think) is Picastro. Red Your Blues and Metal Cares are great for this, though I sorta dislike their other full-lengths.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jAmEo5qym4https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyZ1VK23ILwhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRjsi4IEKKEMonopot is terrific for the coming fall. Another slowcore/post-rock band that does something darker more than it is depressing. Something Is Like Nothing Was is terrific; Optipess and Taran aren't as dark, but have some very good lows.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHReU4iiFswhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AJ4bQ1ZIiYhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVRd2Z1blG8https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8haBsxHjOcPersonal favourite of mine is Ylayali, but it's mostly his older albums that are slower and darker (his music is still really good, but no longer so dour), though they're not so easy to find; more abstract than strictly noir, and not jazzy, so it's a bit off-theme, but I think they fit with a lot of the other stuff I've posted, and these albums are also favourites of mine. Anyway, albums are: 'yy', 'picked apart', 'pumpkin patch', with 'dog bone' and 'fan' also being good, but not as close in sound or as tight as the first three; first three feel almost like a trilogy.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LAuCYRt-eM'yy' is still up on Bandcamp, but the rest I put in a folder:https://mega.nz/folder/W8lU3ZTZ#8tMPFl8W98WtXo36ZLWrYQAlso:Abilenehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wKHLsWPLSwComputer Datinghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dZc0zWIrTIhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTGE_pyv5i0
>>123633240The For Carnation, the band Brian McMahan formed after Slint. S/T is a fantastic album, and Britt plays drums on one track.
>>123643850>>123643869Of these, my biggest rec would be Enablers since they do such a good job with atmosphere.Spiderland was really influential in general, but you could find a lot of albums that all took that inspiration differently, so figure out whether it's the slowcore, post-rock, vocals, whatever, that you like about it and go from there.>>123643882The For Carnation is great, though I personally prefer Fight Songs. Was about to mention them before I saw this reply.>>123633651Lowercase is another good rec. I think the Going Away Present hits the feel best.
>>123643850>>123643882>>123643939Thanks for the effort posts.I especially echo Enablers (there's great songs on almost every album I've heard) and The For Carnation.I would only add that even though the sample is tiny, I can't believe how good this melding of Spiderland and old delta blues is by this old Eric Chenaux band.https://youtu.be/ODixB4CkOwk?si=70AlPWQb_zRkY8Q4
>>123644176Love that Lifelikeweeds track. I was trying to track down more material from those guys a while back apart from this and their EP, and saw Chenaux is in some Rat Drifting collective. Is there anything good from them? And without the blues edge, the Exhaust I posted has some similarities---meandering, listless---but darker. I really love that kind of stuff.
>>123638108>after thirty-five long years - the other guys in Slint decided to be nice to me and let me have my Tweez remixguy sounds like a twat, so i shan't be listening
>>123646441I haven't dug too far into that era of Eric, but I'm not that impressed with what I have heard. I can recommend Michelle McAdorey (long after the collab with Chenaux) last album Into Her Future. Lots of strong, evocative and creative songs if you like altcountry indiefolk. Not at all like Slint.
>>123633620First and last tracks are good. Everything else sounds faggy and whiny other than maybe Nosferatu Man
natural snow buildings
>>123633240to reddit, preferably
>>123633240unwound and bitch magnet
>>123633570>>123633582This also Bitch Magnet and Codeine
>>123637785This and negative approach - self titled are peak hardcore.
>>123649747https://youtu.be/hsoF30jZ3U8?si=pTf1tTfF_A0F0XSHIf you’re into that first Negative Approach 7”, you’ve gotta check out A PLACE IN THE SUN by YDI — unhinged early 80s hardcore greatness.
What are some drummers with a similar playstyle to Britt Walford? I find his drumming so expressive
>>123649747>peak hardcorethe 80s has so much good hardcore to consider those only those two as the best
>>123633240Deliluh is a current band that started out as a Slint copycat (despite claiming otherwise). Their most recent album came with a lineup and sound change, but the three previous are all Slintcore. Thought these guys woulda been in my copy-paste dump, but no.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGVeG6EvgV8https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0b53AERU60>>123647582>Into Her FutureI wish this did it for me, but I couldn't get into it. Speaking of altcountry indie, I was really hopeful about the Toronto band Hobby. Fastest Car Yet and Weed were great, but their latest album is straight country without any of their old edge or drag.
>>123655937are we talking about copycats?https://youtu.be/tqyR-AFN-DA?si=in7LHmfScnt817rc
>>123656449May as well. Shadow of the Season sounds good. It's not you, is it? I'd gladly accept Slint wannabes in my city, and most good copycats start experimenting and doing interesting things eventually.Saw these guys play on tour in the last yearhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXqEQ3auvlwnot sure why I thought they were Slint-y when they played, but I guess they scratched a similar itch. They don't do so much loud-quiet varying per song, but maybe it was over the course of the set. Dunno. I like em anyway.
>>123633240I recommend enjoying more 90s post rock/indie, then revisiting 70s prog. June of 44, Hoover, Godspeed, bark psychosis, modest mouse (long drive only), duster, talk talk, cheval de frise, karate, yume bitsu, mogwai, the forecarnation, aerial m are some recommendations. When you dig through that and want more, explore avante-garde and post-bop jazz: herbie hancock - crossings, wayne shorter - third eye, dave holland - conference of the birds (anything by the dave holland quartet), McCoy Tyner - Sahara, Cecil Taylor - Unit Structures, Bill Dixon - intents and purposes, art ensemble of chicago - people in sorrow. I'm still finishing my massive jazz backlog. But yeah this absolutely is a must listen for spiderland heads.
