What I don't get about buttrock is who is the audience for these unremarkable bands?

Have you lived on Earth?And there's no fault in it, like they said it's mostly whites, mostly North and Central Americans, and largely men (depending on the band: Disturbed has a significant Male slant especially if you remove Sound of Silence, while Three Days Grace has a pretty even distribution). Just pretty normal people, born from like 1979-2005 I think. It's pretty "normal" music largely.I won't necessarily say the majority, maybe the large minority of good music ever made is by unremarkable bands. And every large butt rock band who comes to mind has had atleast 1 really good song. Maybe not Puddle of Mudd, or Switchfoot.
