Early Beach Boys when they were surf rock was the best Beach Boys. They lost the plot with Pet Sounds. Mike Love was right.

The production on their surf rock records is extremely plain. It's wet bread. There's no energy despite the fact taht surf rock is a highly energetic genre. Just listen to Dick Dale. Wilson did everything right when he moved the band into a different direction with All Summer Long. Mike Love was still needed tho, it's the combination of experimental and arty that made them work, similarly to The Beatles. Except Wilson actually innovated while the Shittles just ripped off. Pet Sounds sounds miles ahead of fucking Sgt. Peppers despite being released a year prior. But eventually Wilson went insane and Love overplayed his hand and BB turned to shit. But their run from All Summer Long to Surf's Up is pretty insane.
